I have been testing several ICS roms on several kindles...I have one that the GPS works...can't figure out what early rom I first flashed...but I can not get GPS to work on the others. Any suggestions?
PS: special thanks to all the developers working on ICS for the Kindle Fire.
just to verify - also for others who may answer - are you talking about gps tethering to a cell phone or about network location services ?

Hi
I have been reading this forum today and haven't managed to find an answer that is 100% confirmed.
I am close to buying a Kindle Fire and live in the UK.
If I buy it can I unlock it with the Boritto unlock if it is version 6.2.2 or does it only work if I was in the US? I read something that suggests I need to be in the US to do this.
Also, is there a proven way for me to block Amazon from forcing an update to the device?
Many thanks

Assuming there is nothing stopping you from downloading burrito root I can't imagine what location would have to do with rooting it. I believe there are a few different methods that people have tried though I cannot speak to how well they work. Easiest way to guarantee amazon doesn't update it is to flash a non-amazon rom lol, but as I said others may know more regarding killing OTA
Really? So you think its as simple as putting a ROM on i.e. CM7, something that isn't stock and the update won't get through?
If so that sounds pretty simple...

Let's put it this way, I bought my kindle in late december; amazon pushed an update, I've never once seen
Flash cm9/cm7/miui once rooted. and you wont see updates from amazon.
Thanks guys that's really good news. It would be pointless for me to keep standard as I wouldn't get any amazon services being in the UK.
Next question, how are you finding the tablet with a flashed ROM, is it smooth running with no issues?

i bought my kindle preordered last november. in a couple of weeks (no custom rom atm) i just use stock rom with minimum tweak. as expected amazon market is useless even if we using us ID. apart of that, all went well until i installed custom rom; cm7. so far so good. i can run most of my fav apps, listening to music, hd video and other simple browsing and reading.
stock adw launcher is a tittle bit sluggish so i just use launcherpro which performing as it should without any hiccup.

I lived in Saudi Arabia and I bought mine in December last year 2011. I rooted it and install CM7 just after I received it. Currently I am using CM9 (ics) in daily bases with no problem. For sure, I do have a complete backup of the original stock ROM, if I need to go back.

Those services are the added value of this device, don't give up on it .

Also the reviews seem a bit mixed, lots saying or doesn't work. It must be problems with the server...

The unroot, root process takes less then a second...
The app use several different servers, so if one server doesn't work you can always switch to the next one... also you can enter your own proxy server manually.

Get the ice kernel... buggy version
Are you talking about the one geometry hashcode
Sent from my Kindle Fire using xda premium
Didn't mean to say geometry spell check changed it
Sent from my Kindle Fire using xda premium
Chrome doesn't work in most ICS ROMs because it requires HWA, which they don't have yet.
The new kernel 3.0 that's in development/testing does support HWA, but it's ridden with bugs, so it's not a very good idea to flash its ROM unless you really want to test it.
But ive gotten it to work on both cm9/7
Sent from my Kindle Fire using xda premium
If you gotten it to work on cm9 then please share how, because again with the lack of hwa in any of the 2.x.x kernels there is no way that you have gotten it to work. The only kernel that provides hwa at the moment is hashcodes 3.0 kernel which has been released for testing and development and is no where near complete. So with this said you may have gotten it to work on a cm7 rom but no way on a cm9 rom without a 3.0 kernel that is still in development.

Like the post above says, where's the screenshots because this is simply impossible without hardware acceleration!! Why do you think hashcode has been working on the 3.0 kernel in the first place? You might as well tell us that you have Netflix working too haha. Not trying to be a douche but I'm telling you it doesn't work with 2.x.x kernels. If you don't believe me go over to hashcodes new user thread in the general section and look at the original post. One of the very first things he instructs users to test to see if the new kernel has any changes is to download the chrome and see if it works.

That's not Chrome, its a browser called Miren (http://miren-browser.en.softonic.com/android), the icon is somewhat similar to chrome, but the similarities end there.
That is definitely not Google chrome.

To clarify: Chrome uses RenderScript extensively. And the 2.6.35 kernel's graphics libraries (from Gingerbread) don't support it very well. Hence Chrome is buggy for almost all Gingerbread kernel-based ICS builds.
The reason Chrome works in the new 3.0 kernel build is that the graphics libraries are brand new and support RenderScript perfectly. Hardware codecs are still not running correctly in the new kernel (among a pleathora of other things).
So the difference for Chrome is RenderScript support and not hardware codecs.
Here are some screenshots of Chrome
Thank you I think the one I downloaded got the image change because it said chrome and has the chrome image

Not using Socket GPS, but using Telnet. Telent does not link to any map application, such as Google maps, but only lists the signals received in latitude and longitude.
Hello, I wanted to ask a question about why a mic works on Gingerbread ROMs but not on ICS or JB. I've tested a lot of ROMs and I've managed to make the Mic work once only in GB. I don't know much about how this works but I think its a driver problem or something because I installed a the Stock GB Sound Recorder on a JB ROM but now it wouldn't work. Could someone help if there's a way to make the Mic work on JB or at least ICS. I really don't like GB and would like to use this ability on a actual good OS such as JB 4.2.

No, it hasn't been fixed yet, I have his latest update and still doesn't work. If there there's no help or installation of the Mic on the JB than I will find a way do so, but i prefer a actual developer who DOES know how to fix this problem because I am not very skilled at this sort of things.

One issue I know of is that you need the exact version of Google Voice Search to use some voice based features. That being said, in ICS and JellyBean much has changed in terms of Voice Search so that could be an issue. I think its a kernel issue with 3.x kernels, but lets wait till hashcode tries a fix

Yes, just make sure you have the Mic Update.zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1770672 Page 3 by @sbradymobile . Use the Update.zip, just flash in recovery. Also Hashcode, I think, has it in the 3.4 Kernel.

Does someone know yet the changes of the new update?.
KIndle Fire HD Update is happening
Updated to 10.3.2? It seems there is even a NEWER update! :crying:
There is a new update for KF & KF HD!
KF2: 10.4.1
KF HD 7: 7.4.1
KF HD 8.9: 8.4.1
Here is the link http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...x36E18S96DJXEU
Here is what it says:
"We have a new, free software update available for Kindle Fire 2nd Generation, Kindle Fire HD 7", and Kindle Fire HD 8.9: In addition to bug fixes and performance improvements, the software update adds the following features to your Kindle Fire:
* Language Support for Canadian English and Canadian French - You can now change your device language to Canadian English and Canadian French.
* Show Battery Percentage in the Status Bar - You can now see the total percentage of battery life left when you enable this feature from the Device menu."
"This update automatically downloads and installs for Kindle Fire 7", Kindle Fire HD 7" and Kindle Fire HD 8.9" customers; however, you can also manually download the software and update your device using the USB cable."
. . . According to some of the posts at the site, it seems to add a digital battery meter, but not many other differences for the user (unless you're Canadian, then you get a more robust language package).
I have not been updated, but I am running Kinology now, and also my update file has been renamed!

Anyway rooting was easy used UnlockRoot.com free rooting application and it seems work, superuser is back and working fine
Now I need to find out what service is Making the wallpaper black and, tried many apps to counter it but it just blacks everything out, dont fancy installing a new Rom as the amazon Rom works fine ( with another launcher ) Plus the fact I use the kindle as a kindle, so the ugly interface is handy to keep.
If anyone has solved it please post it, as I miss my Wallpaper!!!
