Vibrant and Future Proofing

Hey Guys,
(originally posted on another thread - was requested to ask it here.)
I'm on the fence about buying a Vibrant and I'd love some perspective from you guys, the dev community.
I saw the Vibrant, love the screen and overall performance...however, I'm concerned about the future (6-9) months out.
The device is supposed to get Froyo..but what about Gingerbread?
How is the dev-ability of this device? Might there be a custom ROM to 1) have Froyo before Samsung 'blesses us' with it...what about Gingerbread?
Thanks guys - I'm new to this scene and appreciate your perspective.
well, its Android so there is no guaruntee's. Who would have ever expected the
Hero to get 2.1, but it did. More than likely it will get Gingerbread...eventually. However Samsung is already in my line of fire after that Behold 2 no upgrade BS.
exactly - the Behold II debacle is kinda freakin' me out. however, the Galaxy S series will have a huge footprint of users to satisfy - i'm hoping this means it will be ok going forward with future Android releases.
During the announcement of the galaxy s series of phones, samsung promised updates like froyo. So hopefully they keep their word.

I learned from the Cliq to never buy a phone based on the promise of future upgrades (Motorola is STILL running Android 1.5 on a lot of their newer phones). I have decided that I will buy the best phone available when I am in the market and if it's updated I will count it as a bonus.

HTC releasing Android 2.2 Source Code for the Incredible and others....

Got this from Andronica...sorry won't let me post a link.
HTC releases Android 2.2 source code for EVO 4G, Incredible, Aria, and Wildfire — geeks rejoice
August 11, 2010 | by Chris Smith
Android OS, HTC, News
Modders and ROM developers are about to bury themselves in source code today and will chug six packs of Red Bull to stay up late into the night hacking away. HTC has released their valuable Android 2.2 source code for the EVO 4G, DROID Incredible, Aria, and Wildfire today allowing programmers and enthusiasts to get their hands dirty with code.
This is a pretty standard thing, as the Android operating system is open source and anything developed in conjunction with it has to be made available to the public. What’s funny about this release of code is that HTC has basically preempted all carriers except for Sprint as the Aria, Incredible, and Wildfire have yet to see the “official” release of Android 2.2. This confirms that it is the carriers that have slowed down the upgrade process on their devices making options like rooting and modding so popular. Even with the slow down, this release shows that the carriers are getting ready for the “official” releases.
The release of the Android 2.2 source for HTC devices is going to prove to be an awesome edition to what modders have already gained from earlier ROM leaks. So, keep your eyes out for some new ROMs over at xda-developers and other modding sites as it is about to get crazy out there!
That is VERY good news.
This is incredible (no pun intended)! Now if we only had the official 2.2...
So now we are waiting on Verizon they say? I guess they want to sell as many Droid 2's as possible before they upgrade the other phones. It's all about the buck for them as we all know. How could they possibly make money off of a free upgrade? They're laying awake at night thinking of this shi*

This is good news indeed. Shame on Verizon for holding out for so long!
They're busy adding their verizon bloatware to it which we will spend hours removing and tweaking to perfection.
This is for the kernel and bluez only? Or am I missing something here?
what is bluez? im guessing something about bluetooth.. wii remove or something?

Drives me nuts it's that way for anything and everything now days. Face it tomorrow will always bring a bigger, faster, cleaner "rig". Then again everyday I think at this rate what will I have to chose from in 2 years, and give an evil chuckle.

Possibility of community made future Android updates

Hi guys,
I'm new to the whole android scene but not linux, and I was wondering, are devs always going to have to wait for Samsung to post their kernel source before they can build updated versions of Android to the Fascinate? I got this phone largely because people told me that once Motorola stops supporting the Droid X, it will be stuck, whereas with the Fascinate the community can build updated versions of the OS. But clearly that isn't the case right now. Is this just because devs don't want to waste their time when it's supposedly coming any day now, or is it technically too hard for them to do? Once CyanogenMod is ported, will we be set for the life of our phones, or will we keep having to wait for Samsung's kernel patches to be released? I would really appreciate any answers I can get. Thanks!
I think the devs cant really do anything new to their roms until cyanogenmod is ported to the fascinate. However, since cyangenmod is based on 2.2, fascinate is stock until 2.2 is leaked our released. I think the devs are just waiting for dj05 to be released right now, unless 2.2 magically appears.

I do not agree with you as my G1 was stuck at 1.6 when Cyanogen built 2.0, then 2.1, then 2.2 for it...
I do believe that the developers can take it to 2.2 and further... However, one of the issues is that Samsung gives us open source code that is flawed or does not compile at all.
Mmmmmmmmmmm
They are attempting to get us better ROMs and such, but Samsung's source and crappy RIL are causing issues with doing so. I have faith that they will get us something great here at some point though.

Mabye no icecream sandwich for atrix or atrix 2. What does everyone think? Are we eol

Theres people asking moto on there facebook page if the atrix 2 will get ics. I also told then the og atrix people want continued support for the og atrix. Heres what they said. Like · Comment · 3 hours ago
Motorola We'll be releasing devices for ICS 6 weeks after Google releases the final version of it. What do you like most about your ATRIX 2 so far? Have you tried the universal lapdock?
Motorola We'll be releasing devices for ICS 6 weeks after Google releases the final version of it
So pretty much same answer too both they have no plans to issue ics updates.just new devices with ics
Unlocked bootloader + Cyanogenmod = continued support. Many of us got this phone because it screamed future proof, and its got more than enough power for ICS. Even if not through Motorola, the Atrix will get Android 4.0.
Maybe no ICS. Maybe yes ICS. Why the f start a new thread?!
Moto knows what there going too do. They have known for awhile why so cell phone companys feel that we do not. Have. The right too know these things. Better communication would be a much happier consumer.
The Atrix is still in GREAT SHAPE!
I've said it before and I'll say it again, people are STILL BRAGGING about their Nexus 1s. How old is that phone?
We have an unlocked bootloader, which will guarantee us some version of ICS (official or not who cares)
IMO the problem started when the Atrix 2 came out. (Which is not even a true Atrix successor)
If the Atrix 2 never gets released, none of these topics would be popping up.
Everything is fine, and there is a TON of life left of the Atrix...

I hate these stupid threads.
Moto has to give the atrix ICS.
Android handset agreement
Thread reported. You already have another thread about ICS.

+1 to that.
The only way you'll see ICS is dev support like CM9 IMHO.
There are plenty of threads discussing Ice Cream Sandwich for the Motorola Atrix. Please continue to use those threads. Thanks guys!

Ice Cream Sandwich for Atrix - Motorola Official

Alright, so many of you know that Motorola announced that it would in fact bring a software update for Ice Cream Sandwich to the Atrix. I emailed Motorola a few days ago and asked them when the update would come out.
This was the answer I received to my ETA question:
"The Ice Cream Sandwich(Android 4.0) Software Upgrade rollout for the AT&T Motorola ATRIX begins on the third quarter of 2012."
I guess that would mean we get ICS (officially) sometime this summer?
See this link for more details: https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c
Yeah, we've only known about it for 2 weeks now

I personally can't wait for chicken curry french fries for the Atrix.

I personally can't wait for Neutrino to be CM9 (ICS)!
But, I'm glad Motorola is going to release ICS for the Atrix. I figured since they were focused on newer devices, they wouldn't bother anymore. Even the Atrix 2 is out now.
I don´t really care where it´s from as long as i get ICS on my atrix. It still has a lot to give.
Thru use of deductive reasoning (lol )
One of the main speculations in the past as to why ICS wouldn't come to the Atrix was because of the webtop, and having to code a new webtop to work with the Motorola Code?
Since Canonical is openly advertising Ubuntu for Android, and the important line that its 'laptop environment' isn’t dependant or intrusive to the OS loaded to the phone. Maybe Moto is simply giving us ICS for the phone, with the Canonical software loaded. thus abandoning its proprietary 'webdock' for something that can be used across its entire lineup?
Thoughts?

That would be amazing... A bit hard to believe considering Moto's past, but still worth dreaming about.
yes
that is amezing i am really waiting for it thanks man for telling me this
Since Moto is heavily marketing the new RAZR with a very similar lapdock, I am fairly certain they worked out the issue with webtop and decided to throw us dinosaur-riders a bone.
However, the truth is - once I saw video of the new Asus padfone I was ruined. As soon as they are reasonable my Atrix and all its docks and accessories will be up for sale with no regrets.

The jokersax ICS ROM is AMAZING! Go try and it! It is still on Alpha but I have not experienced any bugs so far.
It depends on how good the stock ROM is as well, but custom ROMs are always usually superior.
LG Optimus 2x just got the ICS upgrade (Korean update) :/
Since the Atrix and the LG o2x are similiar... (date)
