[Q] CM9 and the Glacier - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I take it that CM9 will not be officially released for the Glacier correct? The only alternatives are the kangs that other developers grab and tweak for use on our device correct? The development section seems to be a swirling mass of ports and <insert name here>'s ICS.
How do we sort through this?
What is everyone's recommendation for a ROM nowadays.
Is ICS just a fabled dream for this unit?
Would I be better to stick with the latest CM7 nightly instead?
What do you think?

We have devs working on cm9 right now, check dev section.

alternative to cm9
Have you tried Zipps Creamed Glacier? This is a serious piece of ics work. I've tried others including cm9 which I enjoyed but has bugs and creamed glacier is the best of all for me. Hardly any issues, smooth as silk and regular updated. Give it a try.

+1 to trofmoc. Last week, I installed zips creamed glacier (he took over and built his own creamed glacier), and it was really stable. 3.10 had a couple bugs which were fixed in 3.11 today. Good stuff.

ICS for Glacier (MT4G)
I'm a total n00b when it comes to ROMs but my phone was almost bricked by Sense until I rooted it and began having lots of fun with mods.
There's an alpha for CM9, but I've flashed Creamed Glacier (Zipsnet: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1555574) which was really good and was about to try IceColdSandwich by blackwing182 (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1551456) when I saw a cool hybrid of the two that has been working really well. It was put together by I2IEAILiiTY but he's pulled the dl down due to some "drama." I have the .zip file, but I don't want to cause trouble by posting it. Here's his thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1563576.
As a note, some people have been experiencing a low-mic issue (so I've gathered) and the fix appears to be this by user lincore: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=531.
Good luck!

I am totally aware people are working on it, but it's not a straight from the source release as CM7 was correct?

Thanks for the suggestions people. I tried creamed glacier I think a couple months ago I wanna say and it was highly experimental at the time. I like cutting edge, but extreme cutting edge as in the camera doesn't work, wifi doesn't work, etc....is just too hardcore for me. I'm going to give Zips a shot and see how it is now.
BTW I didn't mean to sound whiny about the large amounts of stuff in the dev section, it can just be overwhelming sometimes to sort through whos working on what and where it came from you know. What stage of dev it is in, etc. We almost need some sort of trending mechanism to XDA, unless of course there already is one and I don't know about it.

I don't think you sounded whiney. It sucks when the manufacturer and carrier basically drop development for a relatively new device. I totally feel your pain.
As far as ICS on the Glacier goes, I think we're stuck with alpha and beta releases for now. The devs I referenced have been great with new releases and fixes tho. I was using royal ginger, which was good, but I'm loving the hybrid I mentioned and so far no camera bugs. I had a market free app purchasing prob but signing out of Google and back in fixed it (props to dev for that fix). I say give it a try after backing up your rom. You can always go back.
Btw, miui is working on an ICS release. I might try it.
I'm loving AOSP ICS however and Apex launcher.

I think everyone is waiting for MIUI and CM7. Can't seem to get here soon enough lol we seem to have some Devs looking into making the current MIUI version we have more "useable" hopefully they can get us a descent release where the basic features are stable enough to be use as a 'daily driver' if not, GB will be here shortly in a couple weeks n we'll get things rolling

Really? For me battery was great, but bad 3G and no 4G killed it for me. If I would have at least had ok 3G, I would keep it, but otherwise when I leave my house, I have no internet, which is not the case on stock (or close) Roms.
The MIUI we have has great features and all, but let's face it, it's not the most attractive looking rom.
I can't wait until we have the newest MIUI, I've used it on my old Evo and trust me it blows away the one we have now. You guys are going to be so happy once we have it.
I'd use it as my daily and never change it EVER if we had it.
Unless the sense port was finished, in that case I would use that. But otherwise new MIUI is great.

It's not until you use theme manager to download themes. You can customize boot animation, wallpaper, icons, ringtones, with one click. Also, if you don't like those, you can get newer ones online at miuithemes.com, but those may not use all their features on froyo.
I'm really feeling the excitement build in the Epic community and I think its great. Things have been much more positive around here lately as well. I can't wait to try out miui and cm7 after GB source comes out, and hopefully be able to help out finding bugs and testing.
A couple months ago I was ready to ditch this phone for just about anything (even considered downgrading to an EVO) but now I think I'll be happily running the Epic for a good while to come.
For anyone who is fed up waiting for the latest and greatest, try running SFR 1.2 (froyo) with clean kernel. I am very nit picky about my daily driver and this has been flawless. Performance is much better than stock, and everything works so well I just don't feel rushed to upgrade (phone or OS) like I used to.
Right now I'm using marcusants ACS Bamboozle, but will definitely switch when (maybe if) we get GB Miui.
I have also seen an improvement in our community. The useless flaming and bickering has been toned down to a minimum, if not, just completely stopped. Its great to finally be one big happy community like before. I can say SRF 1.2 is def my favaorite ROM and daily driver at the moment, but I'm definetly looking towards CM7 and MIUI. It'll still be a while to get some stable builds done even after source is released so I hope SRF 1.3 is dropped a bit before then so I can totally leave froyo with a bang! and according to qbking77 in the SRF 1.2 development thread, SRF 1.3 is still being worked on, as well as a possible new kernel thanks to their hard work, it'll be a lot easier to wait a bit longer for MIUI/CM7 lol

MIUI just looks like a Chinese iOS knockoff. :\
Since I'm also probably going to be waiting for the next Nexus (if I can resist the SGSII) I'm also looking forward to CM7 and MIUI. I've never used either before or any iteration, but the reports on them are always great.
I'm gonna go to CM7 and set everything up, make a Nandroid Backup, then go to MIUI and set everything up with a Nandroid Backup after, because those are gonna be the only 2 ROMs I'll use.
Do any of you know how to build a kernel? I've made files to test, but don't know how to compile. I combined some files from GS CM Kernel and Epic stock kernel. Just need to know how to make a zimage. I can post the files if you want to compile.

You might want to PM thomasskull666 or Rodderik for that. They're the "kernel gurus". Just make sure u know what your doing and dnt hard brick ur phone. I wish I could help more but so far I'm looking for an extra computer to load a linux only OS since I hate to dual boot. Also, I haven't read too much into compiling yet so no help there either :\ sorry

[Q] Let's talk about ICS

There currently couple of ICS Roms now in our forum (MIUI, Virtuous, CM9, and CG). But my question is, I am a real beginner when it comes to phone system devs, so, when I tried all the newest version of each ICS Roms, I do not feel any major differences. The camera does not work, same issues with crashing, slowness, and etc. I am not complaining about the issues and bugs, but I am wondering what's the difference between each rom? Are there any major difference? And what are we expecting next for the rom? Camera?

OK first of all MIUI ICS is much different then the other ics roms there is more customization in a much easier way and a whole different experience even thought they come from the same source I believe. Now when is comes down to the difference between virtuous and CM9 is the mods and other stuff that you won't notice I personally like virtuous it looks more professional with the mods such as the setting toggle in the notification bar its just me. CG is more of a stock experience so you won't see any mods just pure stock experience. That's the major changes I see and with the bugs I don't really know but there all being worked on with pretty much Feb so if camera doesn't work with one it won't work with the other just give him time I'm sure its coming very soon

This is where I get partially confused, i was running MIUIce Cream Sandwich (ICS v4.0.1) and have had NO issues whatsoever, the camera works, video recording works, and it is fast as all get out (3200-3300 quad consistent o/c to 1.5GHz). I was trying (and failing thus far) to find the camera framework, and hardware ID information from this ROM and inject it into one of the new ICS ROMs we have available.
what all would i need to pull from MIUIce cream sandwich in order to get a working camera in any of the other ICS roms? i know at least i would need to pull the camera .so files from system/lib, but is there any other completely necessary files that should be pulled to get this to work?
im really hoping that a dev stumbles across this and could point me in the right direction, because the camera CAN work, and i have a feeling i am really close to getting it to work, but i don't have the know how (quite yet) of the more experienced devs here.
i really wish it was as easy as my GS4G was when GB ROM leaks started surfacing, that was a 5 minute fix once the right tools came along lol

I believe that you are running a hybrid version that isn't really ics if your camera is working. This would explain why you aren't having the same problems as others running ics roms.

foxxx50h, were you running the now discontinued Galnet Miui release? If so, I know what you mean. Since I was using that and it was great. The only serious glitch was that the market place crashed whenever you tried to preview the pics.
If you want something like that, Dark_Sys released a newer version, but it reads a GB code and not ICS. And it's quite good and stable. Everything works too. Super great on battery.

Then you can buy a Gnex or wait I know I'm starting to envy the Gnex. I'm just waiting for the HTC Ville which (Should) be unveiled at MWC towards the end of this month..It should be an absolute BEAST
i've been using creamed glacier since december as a daily. two main issues on it are the camera and low mic volume - though that comes and goes.
quattro was a mess for me. once booted the setup routine would crash out and widgets would constantly crash the launcher no matter what i tried.
testing out cm9 right now. big problem is that launcher (NOVA even) crashes a lot. otherwise call volume is great. runs decent. one great thing there is that it actually contacts google and restores apps. plus i received an email from google congratulating me on my purchase of a galaxy nexus

[STATUS UPDATE] [03/22/2012] Status on Evo4g Rom Development?

[UPDATED 03/22/2012]
I've noticed in almost all of the Rom threads for the Evo4g that they haven't been updated lately or the download links aren't working anymore. Which leads to a couple of questions. [Now with Answers!]
What is the status on Gingerbread EVO4G development?
Answer: Apparently the EVO4G is still under some pretty good development. Maybe not as hardcore as it used to be when it first came out but that's to be expected with Ice Cream Sandwich taking most of the attention. The root method as of 03/18/2012 is the Revolutionary tool. This tool will work for the EVO with hboot versions up to 2.15.0001 and 2.16.0001.
What [STABLE] roms, both AOSP and Sense, are currently still being updated and developed?
*AOSP
- CyanogenMod 7.2 (Released 03/18/2012) YouTube Link
- Alternative CyanogenMod Nightlies (by xjackofall)
*Sense
- Stock BareBones (by misery in motion)
- Synergy (Hasn't been updated in a while and this is an alternative link from the OP [Original Post] but a good ROM for sure.)
- Sprint Updated Series (by brad560)
What's the official status of CyanogenMod 7? Why no nightlies?
Answer: (by jelive) They are concentrating on CM9 ICS so no nightly CM7 GB action. Everything is kangs to bring us to CM7.2 which this OP and couple others (see link for Euroskank in earlier post) compile themselves from latest GB commits-updates.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23735841&postcount=455
Where can I find the latest and greatest Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions?
Answer: Calkulin has a thread that lists all of these. Find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7027238&postcount=1
What is the latest way to Root my EVO?
Answer: Revolutionary tool is the latest way to root. It's available at http://www.revolutionary.io. I've created a "How To" video using this method here: YouTube LINK.
* The ROMs listed above are the most basic answers. Of course there are many more ROMs to choose from and you can easily find them just by going to the main 'Development' section of the EVO forums.

[Q] New Glacier Flash-A-Holic Questions.

Hi everyone, I apologize ahead of time if these questions are redundant and can be found in different forums. I recently received a MyTouch 4G from T-Mobile as a replacement for my wife's lost Samsung Galaxy S 4G and am trying to set up a stable system for her.
I've already downgraded, rooted, and installed a custom ROM (currently CM7 7.2.0 RC1) but wanted to ask a few questions.
1) ROM recommendation? Rock-Solid ROM with non-buggy WiFi calling is a must since we have poor reception at home. I imagine that a ROM based off of an official T-Mobile base for the Glacier would be best but I'm not sure.
1a) For such a ROM, is there a preferred standout kernel?
2) Is there any hope for ICS roms to gain solid WiFi Calling capability?
3) Out of curiosity, why are there so many ROM ports? Are they just as stable and functional as one specifically for the Glacier?
Thanks a lot for your answers! I know it's very subjective but I'm hoping to get some good feedback so I don't have to keep deleting her data as I try out different things
Virtuous Unity is an oldie but goodie and everything works. Use the kernel it comes with.
There is always hope for any feature. Wifi calling will work well on ICS eventually. Give it time.
There are many very good roms for other phones that port well. The MyTouch 4G has two "sister" phones that share the same SoC and port easily. Why build a whole new ROM when you can port? Also, keep in mind that a non-ported ROM has to be compiled from source which, for the most parrt, limits you to AOSP, AOKP and CyanogenMod. We have lots of that. Any sense ROM that isn't based off of a glacier/panache build is going to be a port, as well as MIUI.
Edit: I almost forgot. Android Revolution HD is right up there with VU in functionality and is still supported. There is a camcorder fc, but a fix can be found in the thread. Doubleshot cam and 720p setting, as I recall.
Android Revolution HD
Best. ROM. Available.
yeah virtuous is good too, but ARHD is so much faster

I used to have an HTC Sensation (which my 1-year old son tragically dropped into a cup of joe) and ARHD was definitely one of the most stable and popular ROMs.
However, because of his commitment to a stock experience I had to flash several add-ons to get desirable tweaks (battery%, ultra-smooth rosie, extended quick-settings, custom power-button settings).. are these also available for the Glacier version? (I read the thread and it seemed like the latest version does not have these yet?)
Thanks again!
ps. Is it best to keep the kernel that comes with it?
flash rc tweaks. There is a link in that thread somewhere. Also, that kernel is really good. If you don't like it you could try thederekjay's sense kernel, but I doubt you will need to change.
The ROM called LeeDroid is good too, I've been using it for several weeks, no problems.

Thanks!
I installed ARHD 7.0.3 with RC Tweaks and it's been pretty darn amazing. Everything works (so far) and fast!
Thanks again for not letting me flounder around.. very much appreciated!
The real test is whether or not SHE likes it.
Haha.
I'm using CM7.2 RC1 along with thederekjay's Darkside Kernel and i have absolutely no problems and beyond excellent batt. life.

Call me blasphemous but Sense feels a lot smoother than CM.. have you seen how smoothly the screen transitions ? It also looks more polished IMO.
Having said that, is there any way to adjust the haptic feedback level on ARHD? It's too strong for my liking.. tried to search but didn't turnip anything.

[Q] Good ICS Mod?

Hey all,
If any of you have tried several different Glacier releases, I would really appreciate your feedback :
I'm looking to update my Glacier to ICS, but am getting a little confused with all the ROMs available on here.
Basically, I'm looking for a mod that leaves as many devices/drivers/sensors functioning as possible. I'd also love to find one that's not super-customized, with more of a "stock" ICS experience.
So far, Creamed Glacier seems to be one of the better options, but it also hasn't been updated since March ...

I've thoroughly enjoyed ice cold sandwhich. the only two issues I've had were fixed by downloading substitute apps
1. Stock browser. fc'd alot. Switched to Opera, ne'er another problem
2. camera/camcorder. switched to absocam. works like a charm

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to try it.
Try ...Awesome...'s vanilla aosp rom. It's the best of aosp without mods.
