Hi guys,
I need some advise. I'm thinking of trading my Rogers note for the international version. What do you folks recommend. Following are my reasons.
1. I believe the n7000 will get ics before the Rogers I717
2. I get 4 hours of battery and find it frustrating. I heard the battery performance is better on the international version.
3. I heard n7000 is a bit faster. I find i717 gets a bit choppy during screen transitions
4. I find I717 gets quite warm while using. A little uncomfortable.
5. I hardly get full lte to care about it. 4g is fine
6. Home button on the n7000 seems nice.
What do you thinks guys? Any help would be appreciated.
thanks
N 7000 gets pretty warm too, but base on what I said, I think is a smart move to trade.

I switched from I717 to N7000 and am so glad every day that I did. ZIPPY performance with the active dev for it, just wonderful compared to the previous phone. Fm radio is sweet too =D. LTE was unnecessary with a 3GB cap.. The data on the international has been plenty fast when needed. Do it!

I switched from an i717 to an N7000. Best decision I ever made. The only issue I've had is sometimes the phone activates the voice software and car mode. Bloody annoying when it happens.
I'm the opposite, I switched from N7000 to I717 & I don't regret it. While I do miss ICS but blazing at LTE speed was well worth the sacrifice.
I too switched from i717 to n7000 and do not regret it at all. I get way better battery life on the international version. I can get 1d 15hrs out of the battery on this with 3hrs of screen on time where i could only get 10hrs out of the i717 with the same on screen time max on a good day if the planets and stars were all aligned properly

What is the i717 ?
Its the USA/Canada LTE Version of the Note
I researched extensively before purchased N7000 instead of AT&T's Note. Personally, I think the ONLY advantage of Rogers I717 is ease of the warranty service.
Some may argue that I717 has LTE, but from where I live (So Cal, probably true for many pp) the advantage of LTE is little to nothing. I am constantly getting 7mbps on HSPA+ which is plenty fast for everything except stream HD video or torrent. But again, I doubt anyone would use their $10/gb data plan for that purpose. Until carriers roll out unlimited data for $20 a month, I see no place for LTE.

I mostly agree on that one. NFC is not on the N7000 though where it's brother I717 does have it. Just one small thing, definitely didn't swing my decision though (I live in Canada on Bell, but went for the International Note. Best decision I could have made )
Also if you're into flashing custom firmware onto your device the N7000 has more devs out there.

I was in your shoes as I initially owned the Rogers i717R before getting my N7000.
I don't regret it as Yes the N7000 is a lot more responsive thanks to the Exynos processor and having the physical home button its better than having the 4 touch buttons.
Yeah I miss the LTE speeds but HSPA+ isn't bad at all. Also the development for the N7000 is more abundant than the i717.
If you get the opportunity do it... you won't regret it.

Never even consider US Carrier devices anymore. International versions have more users, more development, better specs, FM Radio (uses far less battery) Before the captivate I only bought International Nokias...all the N series. form the N82 to 97
Can operate for $10 a month UL data on MediaNET (for now) I find 3MPS download plenty fast enough for the few times I am not in a WiFi area. Warranty is not an issue since I buy used anyway. I bought my last two SGS II used and my note used and never had an issue. The wife loves the SGS II and does not want another phone. She could have lived with the Captivate for the next 5 years. LOL She is not into the phone thing.
Thanks for the help guys. I'll pick up the n7000 on Wednesday.
Quick question, for n7000 running stock firmware, are there any issues getting ota updates? Especially in Canada?
Thanks

Plus is it easy to go back to stock once your flash a custom rom?

I wouldn't jump headlong into beta ICS waters if I were you. Best thing for any new user is to root their phone first and play with custom Gingerbread roms for a while. That way you learn the ropes.
Existing ICS roms are fairly stable, but have a lot of small bugs. As a consequence, the roms require high maintenance and fixing, which is beyond the knowledge level of a newbie (no disrespect here, just stating the fact). Also, getting back to GB is not very straightforward.

Going back to stock is easy-peasy from custom GB roms.
Have your traded yet? I have the international and might be interested.
Interesting I might be willing to swap my white att Phone
It's worth the trade
For me it was an easy choice for the N7000 after hearing about the different processor in the North American Version to accommodate the LTE. The speeds of LTE would be nice but the current 6Mbps I get with my N7000 is sufficient to do everything I need the phone to do.
Not to mention way more development for the international version! (This may change in future but for now....)

Hello all,
If I could get the Galaxy S2 or the S2X, which one should I go for? OR are they both the same and the only difference is the screen size (4.3' vs 4.5') and the processor (1.2 vs 1.5 GHz)??
Could you please give me some specific details as to which one I should buy and why?
I will be using the phone on a Bell Canada network, so if I get the S2X, i will have to unlock it; and S2, i could probably get it from Bell so no need to unlock it
Any help is appreciated, Thanks fellas!
Get the international one. Because it has more support, so more roms, kernels, mods,... And 4.3 inch is big enough. You can also overclock to 1.6 but thats not needed because it's already blazing fast. But you still decide

Here's a good place to start. Opinions are like a$$holes and elbows, everyone's got one, some people have two...and yours might or might not matter to me.
That said, I just upgraded to the SGS2 but I chose that over the 2X due to the price difference. The SGS2 is available for some really nice deals right now.
Good luck!

i have owned, sold, and switched to the SGS2, and I do not regret it at all. The SGS2X has a qualcomm/adreno 220 combination, and compared to the exynos/mali 400 combo, its a night and day difference. although the exynos is clocked @ 1.2, compared to the X's 1.5, the SGS2 is way faster/smoother/more liquid. It is all around a better device IMHO. Besides the extra .2 in screen difference, this SGS2X is not as good. And that isn't just opinionated, if you do your research, you'll see that this is all backed up in video, graphs, and reviews. The SGS2 is still the best device out ther IMHO, even better than the nexus. The only thing the Nexus has that we cant is the higher resolution. Besides that, there is nothing. Go with the SGS2, I personally peomise when comparing it to the SGS2X, you will not be disappointed.
I have question as well in relation to this I am currently on Bell Network on Galaxy S2. Now I am planning to get the Telus S2X and Unlocking is not an issue I can do that but with Samsung in order to flash you have PDA, KERNEL, PHONE and CSC files. Now I understand we don't have ROMS yet for S2X for Bell but Can I use the CSC file which I believe is the network config file on the Telus S2X?
I guess Its not worth getting the phone as I found out that its and overclocked processor.
Exynos is too fast.Buy the international if you can.

So I was almost ready to buy the Note yesterday when I read that the International is getting CM9 nightlies while the ATT version is not.
So is the custom rom situation for the ATT version really that bad? As you can tell by my sig, I love tweaknig so maybe I am better off saving and buying the international one?

International version has been having a lot of bricking problems related to CWM/Kernel. We have some great AOSP/AOKP roms and devs, but a few are currently out of the picture due to bricked phones. Somewhat concerning for us USA users as there is no way initiate warranty repairs on international phones. (I've tried, no bueno)
Our CM9 version is also somewhat lacking, in my opinion. The kernel being used needs a lot of work and the phone is no where near as responsive as the other i9220 & XXLPY based roms. Unfortunately, it is the only "safe" version of ICS that we can run, currently.
AT&T version may not be a bad decision purely based on warranty. Would certainly hate to give up my exynos chip though!

hahahah all was sounding good towards going with ATT until you dropped that last statement!
So I see , its a bit of a risky device to play with compared to my Captivate.
I wonder how bad stock ICS is...at least if I can overclock it I wont feel too bad.
Is that feasible?

I'd say so I had to swap my note 3 times before i found a screen I was happy with - turned out to be an expensive endeavor. With AT&T you could just swap it under the 30 day return policy (or whatever it currently is) until you get one your happy with.
Screen you were happy with? Is there a problem with screens too? Is it something about black level issues I think I read?
Gosh, my captivate looks so small but I am used to it so now I am getting scared
Basically I was going to get a tablet but I was like..in reality a tablet is something ELSE to carry...a Note...is a phone that I ALWAYS bring with me but happens to be BIG and can act as a small tablet bring a lot of joy

Yeah, I run tablet UI on my note and it is crazy awesome.
My first screen had a few dead & unlit pixels (not super common with these phones) and the second had super bad banding. (which is common) Both may have been fine for some, but drove me bonkers.
If you do sway for the international version, id recommend purchasing a 3rd party warranty. I should have done this with my first note, but didn't know that these services existed. My current note is covered by CPS (http://www.cpscentral.com/) and was not very expensive.
Thanks for the idea mate. I will indeed do that but now I have to look for that banding because I always drool about the black levels of my Captivate so banding in anyway will make me go crazy

You're in the wrong forums, these are not the forums for the AT&T Note, being a COMPLETELY different device they have their own forums.
Personally, I would not go with any AT&T-mangled device - the I777 was the last device to receive decent development due to commonality with international devices. All subsequent devices have been severely mangled.
Well at least the captivate has been nice to me. I will look for its forum to see what the deal is with it.
Why is always the USA messing up the phones damn it.
Also, the ATT Note has LTE. That might be something you want/like if you are in an area that has LTE. I am not so I am perfectly happy with my international note.
I do feel like this thread is kind of relevant though because you are comparing the two Notes and asking about the international note.

FWIW, I was considering a tablet previous to buying a note. The note has fulfilled that role for me as well as that of a phone. Real dual purpose device unless you have strong needs for a tiny phone or large tablet.
Thanks. That is exactly why I got so interested in it after dreaming about a GS3 for so long LOL

The N7000 is not risky at all, just DON'T do what you are NOT supposed to do. Like use a kernel with I/O bug (ICS leaks). If you want to CM9 then there is no problems with that kernel. We also have a very good MIUI port.
About the screen, no problems with mine at all, its a beautiful amoled screen.
Forget about crappy AT&T Frankensteins, and go for the Oficial Note (N7000) and enjoy what samsung design for you (Exynos )
I recently got a galaxy y but already I am thinking about changing it mostly because coming from sets like desire and bb9900 the display is horrible.I was wondering if the galaxy s is still worth buying new for around 250 usd

if youre looking for something fairly cheap but also good then i'd buy one, but just not that price you mentioned you can definitely find it for cheaper.
lots of support for the phone here on xda, lots of choices for roms and kernels that make the phone much better, if you can find it for cheaper (i got mine for 200)
I bought mine for 130 canadian with a cracked back panel and a small scratch on the screen. Otherwise perfect. I got it a month or two ago and do not regret it one little bit. This thing is slick. Id say 175 would be a good price to buy one at.
I would say paying $250 isn't worth it. S2's go for around $200+.
Galaxy Nexus is $350 from the Play Store, brand new and still a top 5 smartphone. A huge advantage is you get updates direct from Google. For example Jelly Bean is being updated on these phones presently. Who knows how long before any phone you buy that comes from a manufacturer or cell provider will update.
I enjoy my galaxy s, as has been mentioned above, the custom ICS roms and kernels make it so.
I got mine used a few months ago for $100 Cdn or about $98 US.
My 2 cents worth.
Nice to see so many new users .

Rather get sgs2 for that money

Really dunno if korean version is a different model, there should not be any problem if it's just a FW thing, in that case you can change it anytime with odin and you'll do it anyway since you're probably going to flash roms on it, just make sure the model is i9000.
I9000 is written on the box fingers crossed either galaxy s or nexus s or galaxy nexus

Check this out.
The I9000 was the fjrst of the galaxy s row.
They said ICS will not work on that device.
--> it works!!! And it's great!
Now Jelly Bean was allready portet for our galaxy s and it still works the new rom without any difficultys.
So you might have an older device but everything works great on it. And if u don't like the look of yiur software just flash another. There are enough!!
Another point to buy it: it s really handy and not so big like the new ones. (the only negative aspects are the low speed camera and "bad" gps. But everytime i used gps I reached my aim.)

By today's standards the Galaxy S is still a brilliant upper-mid tier device only really bested by the Nexus S and only other device near by is the Defy. Consider the fact that most devices in the £100-£150 range have ARM11's with Andreno 200's and you can get a 1GHz Hummingbird with a SGX540... Its a no brainer. So, yes the I9000 is still worth the money.
it would be right to say that samsung stopped the software support for SGS, but there are great developers on the internet who keep this legendary device up-to-date and they do it better than samsung employees.
Yeah, its still worth buying, actually i just got mine today. I hope it will serve me well, atm im on stock JW4 with semaphore kernel I just didnt know it heats a lot, but well ill get used to it...
Galaxy S makes a come-back!
Having upgraded to the GT-N7000, I thought that my GT-I9000 would become completely redundant. Not a bit of it! Rooting the SGS and installing RemICS-UX was the best thing I could do; my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. It has given my SGS - and myself - a new lease of life! I thought that the SGS would end up forgotten in a drawer, only to see the light of day if the GTN went down. But instead, the SGS has become a part of my life which I use on a daily basis in conjunction with the GTN. Battery life is good; performance is slick; there is a very modern look and feel to it; and - unlike my poor old GTN - the SGS has finally broken free from the accursed Kies. Others have mentioned the excellent work done by the devs on the various ROMs; and their hard work has led to a variety of ROMs which cater for a variety of tastes and needs. So if you can pick up a Galaxy S for a fair price, buy it, root it, install a custom ROM, and enjoy it. For those of a nervous disposition, there is lots of help to be found within the community - just be sure and say 'thanks'.

Dunno to what you compare, but I don't feel heat.
Well I had Samsung Galaxy 3, and it was cooler, on galaxy s temp is about 42 C with wifi on and downloading something from market for example, i spoke with few people, they said its ok, but i dont know. is it? Phone is working ok, without any lag or something, now on stand by its on 30*C..
As others have said, the phone is still worth having if you can find it for a fair price. I got mine on a 2 year contract just before the release of the S2, which would have been too expensive.
I got afraid that the phone would feel horribly slow and outdated before my contract was up (like my previous Nokia 5800xm). With ICS Rom working so great, I no longer fear for that, as I use my phone daily for browsing, and to remote control my computer, and the times I get annoyed with it, it is mostly because of bad connection in my area.
I normally don't think it gets too warm, except when using wifi-tethering with mediocre-bad 3g reception.

Got my nexus 7 and I like it but like my 7.7 much better. However I'm tired of waiting for Verizon and I don't use the cell radio anymore.
In your opinion is it worth it to sell it and get the p6800 so I can get ICS now and have a better chance of future roms? I don't need the 3g if the p6810 is better.
I've tried them all (excite, nexus) and I keep coming back to this guy. Wish it was a little faster but otherwise its the best.
Thanks for your thoughts.
I would get it, you will not regret it. Currently running cm9 version of ICS and is excellent. 3g is always a good idea to have, I am using straight Talk and no issues for close to 4 months. You know that CM9 is available for the Verizon i815, right? The performance difference is night and day. I will never go back to honeycomb. I may flash the official ICS when it drops for radio updates or to tinker, but CyanogenMod is where its at.
I don't know why you'd want to use touchwiz'd ICS, but if that's your intention, you can wait it out, or get the WiFi/3g version.

Just want to post a little update... Looks like I'm stuck with the Verizon 7.7. I put it on eBay with a reserve and it ended at $340! The tablet has all of the original accessories and looks like new! Thankfully I paid eBay's exorbitant reserve listing fee and it didn't sell.
I guess the Nexus 7 has destroyed the market for these smaller tablets. I'm not sure if I can stomach paying around $200 to go from this one to the P6800. (I have learned my lesson about buying tablets from Verizon/AT&T, etc! Wi-Fi or international from here on out...)
I guess the average person doesn't know (or care) about the benefits of this versus the 7 (and I'm not knocking the 7, I have one):
AMOLED, bigger screen, thinner, microsd, two cameras, haptic feedback, hdmi/mhl...
I took this into consideration before buying the i815. I decided that it was worth it since I plan on staying on Verizon for awhile and this is a really nice tablet and I prefer the size over a 7".

I'm having a really hard time deciding between the at&t version of the S4, and the soon to be released "Google Edition" of the S4.
I have the ATT version now, and running TouchWiz, it's one of the laggiest phones I've ever used! Non stop lag throughout the UI, and particularly in the SMS app of all places...the keyboard freezes completely and the S4 just runs like absolute dogs**t.
I've disabled everything that can be and that helps quite a bit, but I still have lag.
I definitely want the stock android experience and understand I'd lose some features from the touchwiz/carrier version, which I am fine with.
Where' I have a hard time deciding is on cost. The carrier version is $250 for 32gb for me, vs the $650 google edition.
What do people here think? Will the carrier verision be able to run STOCK android every bit as well as the one google releases? I want as flawless a phone as possible. My nexus 4 is amazing, except for the terrible battery life and lack of LTE, so I want an S4 that will run android as well as the nexus.
Will the carrier S4 handle the google edition rom once that's (hopefully) released? Any stability or performance issues I should be aware of?

I'm having a really hard time deciding between the at&t version of the S4, and the soon to be released "Google Edition" of the S4.
I have the ATT version now, and running TouchWiz, it's one of the laggiest phones I've ever used! Non stop lag throughout the UI, and particularly in the SMS app of all places...the keyboard freezes completely and the S4 just runs like absolute dogs**t.
I've disabled everything that can be and that helps quite a bit, but I still have lag.

No one can be certain given ATT's behavior with the s4, but IMO it is safe to get the ATT version. My phone already feels like the google edition thanks to task650's AOKP, things will only get better for us when the GE is released
I would say the AT&T is still a worthy device. I too was in your laggy shoes. As much as I want to flash a custom ROM I am going to wait a bit before I do. Mainly, I want to see if the GE will support the added features such as the ir blaster. If they do I'm waiting for Roms to include those from the GE.
I know you have disabled a bunch of stuff already but I disabled practically everything Samsung on the phone and found replacements and kept what I wanted. I'm sure you have too.
In a short end of things while I'm still stock I am more of Nova/Google device with a back end of touchwiz. Adjusted some settings in Nova and the device settings. Its been a few weeks so I will have to look back and see exactly what I set but my laggy phone is now quite snappy.
I'd say stick it out because I personally feel confident the GE will flash fairly well on our devices. If I'm wrong then I guess I'll be waiting a little longer for a ROM I like or just a Galaxy S5 or S6.

Thank you very much for the reply. I'll give that ROM a try now...
I've used CM10 on here, but even that was a little laggy. My main reason for switching back to touchwiz though, was so that I could use my 64gb exFat SD card.
I was in the same boat. Love the s4 hate the lag but didn't want to pay the premium for the Google s4. I found the best for me is flashing GoldenEye ROM which is just the international ROM on our att model. It takes out the lag and keeps the phone like stock. Love it.
Is recommend trying it.... It'd be just like you have it now with all the features but no are bloat / lag

Good advice, thank you.
I have disabled just about everything with the word Samsung or AT&T in it also!
Changed my animation settings as well, and running Nova on top/ in place of TW now and it's mostly tolerable.
I have a few days left to make my decision...the replies here will help. Thanks!

Other than the Smart Stay and camera, TouchWiz doesn't really do anything for me.
If those are critical to you then I'd go with the AT&T phone since it's less expensive.
For me, had I known about the Google Edition coming out, I would have waited for it and bought the AT&T but then flipped it on eBay before opening the package. To ensure I got the most $ for it. Then I'd have put a few bucks of my own into the deal and bought a Google Edition.

But if theory holds, you'll be able to run TouchWiz and those features just fine on the GE.

As mentioned earlier Task650's ROMs are fantastic 'my daily driver on the s2 forever'. I got my phone for dirt cheap with trade-in and immediately put Task's ROM on it and couldn't be happier.

To be honest, if you have the money then get the Google edition for guaranteed openness. While I'm sure our ATT version will continue to get support and eventually a true unlock, nothing beats true pure android at heart from Google themselves in my opinion.

I definitely agree with you there. I was leaning that direction for a long time, but I think I've decided to keep the ATT version.
I got the 32gb for $250. I'll keep this (actually running great now with the goldeneye rom) and worst case scenario I'll buy a nexus 5 for $350 (speculation of course, but I think likely to happen) when it comes out, then sell my GS4 and possibly even make a slight profit.
Thanks to all for the advice!

On the plus side to stick with AT&T model you get Touchwhiz support which to me is not a bad thing considering they could easily fix Touchwhiz, if they would just listen to us lol As it stands we don't know how TW will work with the Google Edition. It would make sense that it should run flawlessly on it but there's always that chance Google will play with something to keep you on there side.
I was super excited to see the google edition of the S4 during google io, after having time to ponder it, I too am wondering if it will be the best purchase. It would seem that a lot of the addidtional hardware such as the IR Blaster will not function, so Im starting to have my doubts. Thought I know in the end I will be unhappy with anything that is not up to date with android?? grrr, I just want the perfect phone darnit.
If only Google would of released a 32GB version.

Pretty sure it won't work. As of right now, there is no Android API to access the IR blaster. Rumored to change for 4.3.
Google edition actually does support the ir blaster on the s4. You just need an app to support it. Read reviews today and all indicate it works but doesn't come with WatchOn or any stock apps to use it.
