LOL! Seriously tho, I need a cheaper alternative to my Tab for my kids to play with.
Does anyone have a recommendation on a WiFi-only 7" Android 2.2 (Froyo) [i.e. must support Flash video] tablet for about $200 USD that support full access to Android Market?
I looked at things like this one:
http://www.lightinthebox.com/Cortex...2-2--Froyo--WiFi-Tablet--800MHZ-_p165566.html
or this one:
http://www.lightinthebox.com/Android-2-1-C-MID-Tablet-with-7-Inch-HD-Touchscreen---WiFi_p158354.html
The second one is Android 2.1 and probably doesn't support Flash but I think SkyFire Browser may be a good fix for that with its built-in Flash support.
Use cases: Angry Birds, Doodle Jump, Zebra Paint, Fruit Ninja, Mini Squadron, Need for Speed, Pandora and YouTube.
Can someone from this board recommend a replacement for my Tab so my kids will give me my Tab back!?!?!?!?

@ayman07: Can I get Nook Color with Froyo pre-installed from somewhere? And whats the specs on the processor for Nook Color?
Or how about this one:

I concur with Ayman07 that the Nook Color is the way to go.
You will need to hack it to get the best out of it though, unless you can find one on Ebay/Craigslists where it's already been done.
As to the processor, it is an 800Mhz Cortex A8 TI OMAP3621, which is very good.
The Coby you linked to doesn't look bad, but apparently it has a resistive screen and that would be the deal breaker for me.

Dave

I had a nook for my first tab, it was so easy to put froyo on it, and easier to put honeycomb on it. Those nooks are impossible to brick.
Go for the nook, best bang for the Buck, and the only tablet I'm aware of with the most flexibility for flashing roms. Wifi worked fine after flashing, even on the hc port.

I commend you for this useful post.
the archos 70 is a good choice
good luck trying to find one, they are sold are everywhere
My recommendation is another galaxy tab. You can get a nice used one from ebay or craigslist for $350. Why hassle with a nook, which is only $100 cheaper and lacks gps and soft keys. Plus it takes time to set it up to your liking.

what about a galaxy tab wifi?
otherwise a nook color, but galaxy tab is definetely easier to use than nook color.
thanks to all for the great replies. im looking into a cheap tab from craigslist. if not, i will look into Nook Color too.

I thought Tigerdirect.com had the wifi only SGT for $350 last week.
I was able to get the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet and really like the use of the stylus. The ThinkPad tablet is running Honeycomb 3.1 and is like most tablets except for a few things. Has some nice security features to enable remote wipe, it encrypts the external SD Card.

By the way, anyone found usb drivers for this thing? I checked Lenovo's website and nothing. Called their tech support, but it was a monkey.
Is it possible to convert mobile notes to pdf?
I was looking at this tablet and was wondering if the pen itself is pressure sensitive like the HTC Flyer or that new one thats coming to AT&T?

I wonder if I can get this here in India for the same price, $99. Been waiting to buy this for a while.
anyone know if it's possible to load the pdf app with annotation capabilities from the Jetstream onto the Thinkpad? Seems superior to ezPDF or RepliGo.
Notes app ported
It would be great if we could get the notes app from the Jetstream/Flyer ported to Thinkpad. The evernote integration looks great.
Anyone know if this is possible?
I would post a link to the evernote blog post about it, but I do not have enough posts yet. If interested, go to evernote's blog:
blog [dot] evernote [dot] com and look for the post "HTC Tablets and Evernote" from 09-02-2011.
I would love to have that notes program on a 10" tablet, but $700 plus contract is way more than I can spend.
too expensive to make it worthwhile IMO
and it's only a Single processor
i'll much better go for any of they existing dual core android tablets
According to the Lenovo website, the thinkpad (the tablet with the pressure sensitive pen) has a tegra 2 dual core 1 GHz. And with a wifi only version for $500 is more in line with my budget. Just would love to have the note app from the htc jetstream.
And the att website lists the jetstream with a 1.5 GHz dual core snapdragon. So, I am not sure what tablet you are referring to as being only a single processor.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Realize now you were thinking of the ideapad instead of the thinkpad. It is only a single core (and also not worth it in my opinion). However, the dual core thinkpad, I think would be quite handy with the pressure sensitive pen.
I am an architect and frequently have to make sketches and annotate drawings during meetings, on the construction site, etc... Having them automatically sync to my evernote account (like the htc app) would be great.

I have installed the Evernote program and their Skitch add-on (they bought the company and made it freeware for Android: http://thenextweb.com/apps/2011/08/...android-app-ready-ios-and-windows-on-the-way/) and it works but it crashes frequently. Seems to be a problem when using the pen while the hand rests on the display at the same time. The built in lenovo application works fine though - and it recognizes the pressure of the pen too which Skitch doesn't.
Does the Lenovo come with an app that let's you draw on pdfs with the pen?

Yes, search YouTube. I saw someone demo it.
I have watched every YouTube I could find on this tablet up to Sunday. Despite its suboptimal layout of ports and cameras I am ordering one: hoping amazon gets some stock soon cause I don't want to wait a month on Lenovo!

So I am wanting to purchase my first tablet. I so far am very impressed with the dev society for the KF. I haven't done alot of digging but the Roms look very impressive. Also haveing cwm and that other recovery is great. One big thing, after rooting can you do anything with the KF that you can with most other tablets? Does it do Flash? I assume that once you get google play on there that you can put on all of your bought apps and such. I am pretty excited but want to get a good tablet for the whole family. Thanks so much.

Dude u should wait for the nexus tablet or the Asus memo those are both 200 and 250 and have more to offer than the kindle. Either way u can't go wrong I love my kindle fire
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk
Yes after rooting u could do whatever, so far flash is supported on stock, cm7 and 2.3 roms , and soon to be stable with cm9 and 4.0 roms. Google play is working perfectly too but some gameloft games don't work
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk
You can't go wrong with a kindle fire. First and foremost it's an E-reader then a tablet in my opinion (which is not meant to take anything away from the device) . The Kindle reading app blows any other reading app out of the water. Add that onto all the hard work the devs have put in and you have a huge array of different add ons and directions you can go with your Fire. Plus amazon customer support I have found to be awesome. I had a problem with my unit charging, i called them on a saturday and I had my new kindle on monday. I'm guessing we might see a reduction in cost in the next few months as amazon is likely to announce their new line of e-reader/tablet.
Since each individual case is not the same. It is important to weigh the pros and cons yourself. If you are willing to ignore the cons then it's an easy choice.
Pros: Android (read: customizability), price, customer support, Amazon catalogue, XDA community support (a huge consideration for me), etc.
Cons: KF has no mic or camera or memory card slot and has only 512mb RAM.
So if you don't care about the cons or can live without them then, at this price point, it is a no-brainer.
Personally, I whole-heartedly recommend it!

If you want a cheap tablet that you can make not so cheap, then yes. But you'll have to do a little work, and it's not for the faint at heart.
If you want a good tablet straight out of the box, you'd be better off going with something else. Stock Kindle Fire OS is buggy and kind of annoying. And it's nearly impossible to customize.

I agree with all the other posters above me.
The KF is VERY easily rooted, which opens up both great opportunities for modding and an unfortunate can of worms for idiots who jump in headfirst without understanding what they're doing.
At this point if you were interested I'd just buy it used. That and read up on the rooting process, what a bootloader/recovery is, AND HOW TO CONTROL THEM VIA ADB/FASTBOOT. You can see the # of "bricked" threads, which are purely from the lack of understanding the above.
I agree with all those who have already posted, I would just caution you that if your looking for a tablet that you can root and then flash and jump into a stable custom rom the Kindle Fire isn't there yet, it's almost there but not completely. Hashcode just pushed out his new 3.0 kernel and it is almost perfect but has some issues. If you're looking for a tablet that your willing to work with and possibly reflash daily then go for the Kindle Fire, it's a great tablet to learn with since it's being heavily developed right now, however if you want more stability i'd wait for the google tab or go with an older tablet.

I, as everybody else, am also eagerly waiting for ICS - but saying there are no stable ROMs is incorrect. I'm running CM7 since ages with zero issues on two KFs.

I like the Fire so much I just bought another one for a family member. About to flash ICS and hopefully never go back to stock.
Thankyou to everyone who posted. I do see the kindle fire as a good solid option and I love the dev community you guys have built here. I really think you guys have somthing special going on here. However I think I may be tempted by the Nook Tablet. After you root it and repartition the Hard Drive. You have way more space than the kf. The Nook also has an SD slot. The display is a little better as well. IT also has a gig of memory vs the KF 512. So I think ima go with it. I tell ya this though I sure would have enjoyed the society here. You guys seem to be top notch. THANKS FOR YALLS HELP
Hope y'all have a good one.

Nook Color better, IMO, than Kindle Fire.
I'd recommend the Nook Color over the Kindle Fire. The main difference, aside from the fact that it's a bit cheaper, is that it has an SDcard slot that not only provides up to 32GB of extra space, but allows you to boot from ROMs on the card without altering the Nook itself. This also makes it a lot harder to brick, or easier to unbrick, than the Fire. You can, of course, put ROMs on the internal memory, just as you can with the Fire. Look at the Nook Color forum on this site for more info.
The Nook Tablet is another matter. I don't know much about it, but I understand that B&N has made it a lot harder to hack than the Nook Color, You can check the forum for the Nook Tablet here on xda to see how much success devs have had so far with overcoming its protections.
nook color.is.nothing in front of kindle.fire.and nook tablet is same like kindle.fire but with sd card slot and cheap build quality i have used both and kindle is like solid metal and nook tablet is like cheap plastic
now kernel 3.0 is supporting otg and u can connect usb drives and hard drives with it
so go for kindle fire u will not regret

I love the KF (granted, it's my first tablet experience), I bought one new and another for my son off of Craigslist. Flashed them both and haven't looked back.
My wife had a Nook Tablet a while back and I believe it was the 8gb version, but I could be wrong. We had returned it for personal reasons. We are now looking to get her another reader. First off here's a few bits of info:
1. She will be using it primarily as a book reader.
2. She may use some apps but not many.
3. We will not be rooting it.
As far as apps go she will use whatever she can get from the B&N store. With the tablet she had previously she bought some Susan Salon game and the Angry Birds games. She would also use weather apps, Facebook if it's available, and possible Netflix. It comes with a free month of Netflix I believe and she has expressed interest in that, but not sure whether it will be long term or not. She does have a Macbook to use for everything that this device can't.
So with all that said is the performance gain from the dual core processor in the Tablet worth the extra $50 for what she would be using it for?

Given how you plan to use it, I would say yes it is worth it.
Yes, the Nook Tablet is definitely better at running video. However, I'm not sure how much better the 8GB Tablet is since it has the dual core processor but only 512MB of RAM. On my 16GB Tablet with the 1GB of RAM the video performance is clearly better and the overall speed just a little faster.
Although you say you will not be rooting I would highly recommend running a bootable SD card on either. The changes to being a real tablet are significant. You are also able to access the Google Play store, Amazon App store and others where there are many more apps than B&N has and you can even find the same ones for free or for as little as 1/4 of the price that you will be charged in the B&N app store.
Books and Magazine subscriptions through B&N are still readable using their Android app. Even if it is mainly for reading and only a few apps are downloaded these and other reasons make using something other than the stock OS highly compelling. Since you can do it from a bootable SD card that leaves the internal Nook OS totally stock why wouldn't you give it a go?
JP
If you're not going to root it, you're probably asking the wrong forum. This is XDA; the whole purpose of these forums is for development There's plenty of enthusiast sites out there with users more like you.
Get the regular Nook Color. Even if you get the Nook Color with rooting should be sufficient. Nook Color vs Tablet is speed/ram different. Good Luck.
Id like to make a suggestion for the Galaxy Tab 2 7inch model. It's only 250$ like the Tablet and you will get a far more complete tablet/ereader device than the nook tablet/color.

Seconded. No working around what B&N think you should be able to access. Ability to access both Google Play Store and Amazon App Store at will. No need to dread OTA updates.
I've got 3 NC and a NT in the family, but am now very happy that I have my own SGT2.

Item 1, where do she get the book from? Buying directly from B&N?
If so, get the refurbished NOOKColor, not new one, not Nook Tablet for roughly $100, $120. It will do just that.
I bought a nook color as a fun toy when it came out for me to learn about android and tablets. My wife ran off with it and used it as a reader. The nook color turned her into an e-book enthusiast from a skeptic.
We got her a nook simple for xmas and she is way happier with that. Why are you looking at the tablet instead of the simple w/light if she doesn't use apps much? The simple has a great form factor, no glare screen, and weighs less than half of a color plus GREAT battery life.
I still like my nook color but the batter life is still suboptimal if you are using it as a reader only. I couldn't buy myself a simple because I just like the extra bells and whistles, but for her needs it rocks. Just double check your wife's needs/perspective before you lay down the cash.
my 2 cents
I hope this doesn't side track this thread. Is it as easy to get the tablet to run on a bootable SD as the color is?

No. The Nook Tablet has a locked bootloader. The devs have found a loophole that makes it work, but it is not as straight forward as the Nook Color. But for the user, it is probably transparent and you would not know the difference.

As I'm sure you all know Barnes and Noble and Samsung have jointly released a version of the Tab 4 7 inch. My wife is a long time Nook fan but her original Nook Color is getting pretty old and I'm considering giving her an upgrade as a gift. But B&N wants $179 for their version while on Amazon the regular Tab 4 7.0 is $169.
So I'm curious. What's the difference? For someone who primarily wants to read books and magazines from B&N and other tablet features are of far lower importance, is there anything special on the B&N version that caters to that sort of usage? Or is it just a Tab 4 with the B&N Nook App? It's only $10 difference and I'd gladly pay more if she would actually get something for it.
Just tab 4 with extra software and supposedly a special b&n nook app which is better than the one in the play store.
