This is a guide on how to root your phone and install a custom ROM using Universal AndRoot. It supports several phone models and is the simplest way to root a phone I have ever seen. It features a 1 click root and a 1 click unroot option. Rooting with this method does NOT affect your bootloader, therefore if your phone needs serviced you can (theoretically, I have not verified this to be true) simply unroot and restore to normal.
As always myself, XDA, ROM developers, your friends, your mom, the rulers of the world and the developers of this app are NOT responsible for any bricks YOU create by taking the risk of rooting your phone. Also there are no guarantees that your warranty will not be null and void. If you NEED your warranty, DO NOT root your phone. Use at your own risk!

First we will gather the items needed to complete this process.
Universal AndRoot Version 1.6.1 is the newest STABLE release. The newest version is 1.6.2 beta 5, which is where the updated list above comes from and is said to be very close to the final release version.
Next go to the Android Market and install AppInstaller (there are a few versions including appsInstaller by modmymobile, all are free)
While in the market, also grab ROM Manager (also free)
Next download the ROM you would like to use. I personally recommend CyanogenMod 6.0.0 DS - stable. This link will take you to the Cyanogen downloads section where you will have to select your phone and search for the ROM you want.
While you are there, also grab the Google Addon pack for your phone.
Of course it is up to you to choose a ROM you like. You can also keep your stock ROM if you choose.
Lets Begin!
Install the Universal AndRoot .apk file, the ROM you chose and the Google Addon to the root of your microSD card
Open AppInstaller and let it locate your AndRoot .apk on your microSD. Select it and install it to your phone.
Open Universal AndRoot from you app menu. It should read your phone and show your firmware version. Click the "Root" button and let it do it's thing. It really only takes a minute or 2. When finished it will let you know. Congratulations, at this point you are now rooted.
Now for a custom ROM!
Open ROM Manager. Install Recovery. The default recovery for ROM Manager is ClockworkMod Recovery (which is what I am using) but a lot of people seem to like RA Recovery. This option is at the bottom of ROM Manager under "Flash Alternate Recovery". Whichever you choose, let the Recovery flash.
Next choose "Backup Current ROM", then "Reboot Into Recovery" (for future reference, you can also get into recovery mode by turning your phone off, then hold down the "home" button hit the power button. continue hold home as it powers on.)
Chose "wipe data/factory reset" then "wipe cache partition". This step is important. I know from personal experience if you don't do this you may end up in a bootscreen loop!
Choose "install zip from sdcard". Navigate to the ROM you loaded on your microSD and flash it.
After the phone reboots (which can take a few minutes the first time after flashing a new firmware version) go back to ROM Manager and again choose "Reboot Into Recovery". Once in recovery, again choose "install zip from sdcard". Navigate to the Google Addon pack on your microSD and install it.
Once you are rooted and running your new ROM, go into ROM Manager and partition your sd card. This is optional.
That is it. You should be good to go! Way easier and faster than the old goldcard method!
This is my first XDA guide. I hope it is up to your standards!

when you try the root process or when you try to flash a rom?
i get the exclamation point screen when i try to boot into recovery mode the nandroid wiki mentions this screen and says to hit alt + L but i cant find which of the mytouch3g buttons they are talking about hxxp://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Howto:_Nandroid_Backup
any help is appreciated
being that the nandroid wiki page is talking about multiple phone models, i assume it is referring to those with a physical keyboard. i honestly don't have a clue what to do in that situation. never ran into it myself. hopefully someone here will have an answer for you.
The exclamation point means that the recovery didn't flash properly so your booting into the stock recovery. The step in CM wiki is probably for the G1 which has a physical keyboard. Try booting your phone normally and flashing the recovery again.
Notes about this guide: You will not be able to flash a new splash screen with this method. I would recommend not using the Clockwork recovery that's included with ROM manager. You need to also wipe Dalvik-cache before flashing your new ROM. Most newer recoveries will let you flash multiple zips at a time, so if your installing CM there's no need to reboot in between flashing the ROM and the Google adding.

@ ziggity and amon ra
Hi, pretty new here and this post was great. Thank you. I have finally rooted my 1.2 and was so easy thanks to this post. I also though, got exclamation point. I think it has to do with the part in the directions when it comes to flashing the recovery. Here is what worked for me, maybe helpful to someone else.....
-If you want, or are trying to flash, the Amon Ra recovery instead of using ROM Manager"s default (ClockworkMod), go ahead and put the recovery file on the root of your sd card.
This is where I got confused because when I went to bottom for flash alternate recovery, it was grayed out and said there were none available (though I know for sure it was on that card!). So I tried the one that said boot in to recovery for manual management and that is when I got the exclamation point. I just took out the battery and then put it back in so it would reboot normally instead of being stuck at that point.
-Go ahead and flash the ClockworkMod Recovery from within ROM Manager. It will then reboot for a while and come back up. When you go back into ROM Manager this time, the option will be there under alternate recovery to flash your Amon Ra file on your sd card. You can go ahead and flash it from right there.
-I think you also need to know that once you flash the recovery from ClockworkMod to Amon Ra, you lose the function/capability of ROM Manager. You can flash it right back though from here also, if you decide to. It seems to be a lot easier at first for the noob and/or less tech savvy to use the Rom Manager to cover the basics, simply because Amon Ra recovery is just so incredibly feature rich.
Anyway, I hope this helps and please be kind, this is my first post!

So let me get this straight... If I want root access but I want to stay on my stock firmware, I can just stop after I click unroot? At this point here, can I simply install SetCPU, leave everything else alone, and go on my merry way?
I've been switching roms around for the past two weeks and haven't found anything stable enough to float my boat that doesn't also involve problems with Pandora and/or Navi.
This might be the perfect solution!

Hello,
I have a 02 Dell Streak with Google Android 2.1 Update_1 Build 6491 Kernel Version: 2.6.29-perf.
I also have the latest version of Rom Manager with Flash Clockwork Mod 2.5.0.1 fully flashed and ready to be used.
I recently downloaded a custom 2.1 ROM to flash to my device to use from MoDaCo to use.
A few problems I am having at the moment.....[not sure if i have done this wrong or not.....]
1. Rooted my Streak with Universal Androot, Rooted fine.
2. Downloaded Rom Manager, flashed the 2.5.0.1 Recovery on my 02 Stock ROM
3. Clicked on "Reboot into Recovery", confirmed that I want to reboot into Recovery Mode, phone shuts down, switches on, gets to the Dell Logo screen, then boots the 02 splash screen and boots back into Android 2.1.........
NOTHING HAPPENDS!!
Does anyone know/think if i have done something wrong, or if there is a compatibility issue with the build that i have [Build 6491]?
Really want to get into all of the ROM modding as i have done the same with the iPhone 3G-S on 4.1 and got Android 1.5 on it and with a HTC Hero [UK GSM Version] using FroydVillian 1.5.0 [Android 2.2]
If anyone can help me, i will be most pleased!
Thanks

When you load Rom manager, do you see the installed version on the first option, or do you get "You must have the Clockwork..."? Sometimes my streak wont go into recovery when using Rom manager, I set the rom i want, then manually enter recovery if rom manager wont. no expert here, just sharing my experience with rom manager. good luck!

Thankyou dude i do have clockwork mod recovery 2.5.0.1 and ive tried older and newer beta versions and nothing happends
Well i am having the same issue and waiting if someone can help since i need to update the phone to 2.2
Well I'm new to all this but I am trying to do the same thing utilizing Rom manager with no luck. Upon reading all the directions for upgrading and downgrading the Streak I am going to assume that for some reason Rom Manager is not fully compatible with the Streak. I could be wrong and maybe someone can verify this, but seems to me if it was compatible this would be a much easier way for upgrading and downgrading Roms on this phone.
I have sent a emai to the Clockwork recovery developer and waiting for the response. if and when i will get a response i will update everyone on this thread

Continuing, I rooted my X8,installed busybox, then installed xRecovery, and made a backup, i threw the zip of froyobreadv9 on the sdcard /root/ and installed it through xRecovery using custom rom install option w/ custom selection. Installs no problems, i Reboot my phone, the little andriod dude shows up and skates on screen, maybe 30sec- 120 sec before my phone FREEZES and i have to remove the battery to reboot, ive installed twice through xRecovery, reinstered the battery...too many times, im going to try other roms now, but im very dissapointed and frustrated w/ this whole ordeal, i cant post in the developers forum because i dont have 10 posts...ARGH-!%&#&*...dont want to spam. any help would be great...the model i have is E15a latest baseband and kernel, came installed w/ 2.1, and wow, im irritated and tired, i could go on and on

Have you tried to do full wipe in xrecovery before installing rom?
yea, i randomly did a full wipe in xRecovery, i think thats what did it, I also did a few small things, reinstalled xRecovery and busybox, and then it finally worked, and by that time i was totally tuckered out.
Ok watched video and liked it. Next running the current (as of last nite) Cm7. Would like to get the camera working have read some of the threads. Best I can figure its not happening. Also having some problem viewing youtube videos. Is there a rom that solves these problems or should i go back to some form of mod gingerbread. Or what?
I believe you are using the official CyanogenMod nightlies, correct?
The official nightlies don't incorporate the fixes for video and other media out of the box.
You could install the fixes, but you will have to Google around and find them, then install the zip in
I recommend using the unofficial CyanogenMod nightlies over in the Rootzwiki Droid X Developer Forum.
It supports all the fixes plus 720p video playback, as well as other fixes.
If you're interested find the thread and follow the instructions given.

There is the thread on RevNumbers.
And I agree that those are the better bet for CM7.
Since you appear to be on official...
You're not on the correct kernel to flash RevNumbers nightlies.
Make sure you are (I don't think you are) on .602/.605 system version.
Follow the usual procedure to back up your applications with Titanium Backup and all that good stuff...
Then SBF to .602
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/331-guide-flashing-droid-x-sbf/
My signature has a more thurough walkthrough of the actual backing up/re-rooting/flashing procedure if you need it.
Definitely suggest going to the gingerbread based cm7 on DX. There's two different releases of it just compiled on 01/07/2012 and instructions for applying any fixes are in the OP. The only one necessary for certain is the camera fix. If you need help, I can give you a hand, but not FAST, as I'm at work during regular business hours M-F EST

Kernel is the problem...but we can't manually update our kernels.
Do a nandroid (just in case) and titanium backup.
Then sbf to .602. This will update your kernel for you (and is the best [only outside of certain update.zips that rom manager provides] method).
Root using the method detailed in my sig.
And flash the rom.

You make sure USB Debugging was enabled?
Yes it was in and used same port for sbf. ? When using rs and it boots phone it shows 100% on 1 column but the next 1 says in progress. How long should I allow this to care on before unplugging it. Shave sbf 2 because the phone app wouldn't let me call out. It would show contact and green phone and click when you touched it but nothing happened.

Try using a different USB port or a different computer. Also, try reinstalling or updating your moto drivers.
A data wipe won't remove root, but SBFing will. It's always safe and recommended to wipe the dalvik cache.

Ok,
So how did you get to where you're 'pimped'.
use CF-Autoroot and then just 'Pimp My Rom' app"?
use the stock rooted rom zip? Then the app.
Flash a custom ROM with the app?
What 'root manager' are you using or talking about.
Where or what did you start with before the error/FC?
I'd say if you have a custom recovery to just reflash the stock rooted ROM (odex or deodexed - where ever you actually started from) and see if that clears it up.
UI not working

I started by getting the download from chainfire. it was the CF-Auto-Root-jfltespr-jfltespr-sphl720. After running this through oden my phone was rooted. I then downloaded Titanium Backup and ran it to backup all the files, at least I thought it backed it up. I then downloaded PIMP MY ROM. It was while I was exploring that app that I did something somehow, and now I just keep getting the repeating message, my UI has stopped working. I have tried using the CF-autoroot again but it did not make any difference. I found a file that is named Titanium Backup, but I can't seem to get it to do anything. I really appreciate your help on his issue, other wise this thing would end up in the trash.
A very simple thing to to would be (since you're already on MF9) is to use the Full Odin .tar file.
To go back to complete stock MF9 go here download one of the full .tar(s) (they're zipped) and use in PC Odin PDA slot. Check the MD5s of course. Don't check repartition of course.
Load it into PC Odin in the PDA slot and flash it.
That will take you back to factory stock MF9. (you may have to pull battery if you get stuck at yellow Sprint screen).
Then use the CF-Autoroot method to gain root.
Then use goomanger to grab the latest CWM or TWRP recovery - so you have a way to flash stuff.
Then if you'd like download Titanium Backup you can restore your phone logs or whatever - Just do not restore system settings.
Or if you already have a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) go download the stock ROM zip from crawrj's post (Choose you poison - Odexed or deOdexed, Rooted or not, wipe data or no wipe data.
(He does have .tars too to use in Odin.!)
Copy to your SD card, reboot to recovery and flash that.
It'll get you back to stock.
So junior, what happened? Get it working or not?

I am working on it. just put everything together. I do have one question,
when it say to use the PC oden, is that different than the one used with
the CF?

Nope same one.
You can all versions here. The download for all of them is here. Unzip and then choose which ever version you wish to use. [Last I used was 3.07]
