Hello everybody,
Recently i have been looking at a load of tablets as I am interested in buying one soon. Now I al interested in the iPad 2, the Sony tablet s and the Asus transformer + WiFi.
I want to have a tablet to watch movies, play games, read books and make notes. And I just like the look and specs of this tablet as far as I could have seen and read.
I would like to know from you guys if there are things you dislike about the device or totally love. I have used the Sony tablet s and the ipad 2 but can't get my hands on this device. So Any feedback from you guys is welcome.
Regards

I love it. But only thing that i dislike is the Frame around the glass. It makes some sound if you "bend" it and stuff.. But nothing else to complain and the Prize $ is just great..
Also one problem is light bleed that i only have in 1 corner and its small and i really cant see it but in dark and when im watching movie but i doesnt bother me anymore at all : P
And eaven tf101 only has 2 cores its amazing fast afted ICS : P
-This is just My opinion.....
I bought myself a Transformer Prime for Christmas. Returned it after the GPS and wifi problems, bought a Lenovo K1 at a deal. It was slow and buggy and Lenovo's arrogance was overwhelming, with support totally lacking, so I returned it. I bought a barely used mint Transformer TF101 32GB with keyboard, locally for $325. It has no light bleed or any other problems and I love it!
The Prime was my biggest disappointment. But the original Transformer has restored my faith in Asus!
Wow.. my story is pretty much exactly the same as thomslik's.. except I payed $350.. grrr..
Anyway, I'm loving my TF101 and, for me, the ICS update has been problem free.
I would NOT recommend getting the iPad 2, it's much more limited than Android tablets.. especially with the keyboard dock on the Transformer.
The transformer is great not a problem out of it. I was gonna get the ipad 3rd generation but I don't want a big ipod that's all it is.
I like it. Good screen and fast. I wouldn't pay more then 300 for it at this point tho.
Best device i have ever brought myself so far i have a tiny bit of light bleed but everything else is perfect.
Its fast and does all the things you want to use it for also very very customisable i use a custom launcher themes apps system and kernel all to my preference

It still sells just about everywhere for 399 brand new. Why do you feel the price isn't justified now? Any reason besides having been out for a while? I think for what it offers compared to other tabs it has held its value quite well.

Because it will become outdated pretty soon. It's almost at the end of the one year cycle.
If anyone, living in the USA, buys a TF101 for $399 at this point, they have some terrible shopping skills. Refurbs are at $300 or lower. Even brand new 16GB ones are around $350.
I got mine "Used - Like new" from Amazon for like $240 a couple months ago.

I bought mine on the 17th from Fry's as they price matched an online site that was selling it for $349 w/ free shipping. I will say this site (bhphotovideo.com) was the only site I could find that was that cheap and not a refurb. Every other one I found short of eBay, who I refuse to use, was right around $399.
And not to split hairs but to that point, $350>$300 which is what I was originally quoting. My point is old or not, if the product still currently sits well compared to what's out now, I think it's worth it.
I'm just trying to determine whether to hold onto mine at this point but that's for another discussion...

So you paid $350 + tax, which is around $380.
Not worth it in my opinion. You probably don't realize it now because you just got it and it feels new to you.

Yeah. My only other option it seemed right now was either a Galaxy Tab or iPad 2 and the latter option is really not a consideration, but it was within the price range.
I'm digging the unit but as you said, it's all new to me. I'd love to see something solid on the near horizon as it might convince me to return this and wait but so far it's all just rumors and speculation.
Acer's quad core tablet is on presale for $449.99
In 2-3 months you will see 7 inch quad cores for $250.
Android 5.0 coming out in Fall.
So it depends on how badly you want a tablet right now.
Thanks everybody, I just ordered the 101 version without 3g, it is 400 euro in holland. But for the same price you get the ipad 2 or the Sony tablet. So I think its worth the price.

the iPad 2 is really nice but with the transformer you can install roms like nintendo 64, ps2, etc and play for hours on end. the whole stretch thing is pretty retarded with the iPad 2 and after a while really annoying.
I love both but if I could only have one it'd definitely be the transformer.

Whats the best price anyone has found the 101 at? I found it for $298 at some Mac mail order company but they were out of stock. I wanted to get my woman on for Valentines Day but I really didnt want to pay over $300 for it.
I got mine for $298 with free shipping and a $25 gift card from J&R bringing it to $273...but that was during the holidays and I had to wait like 8 weeks to get it.
Yea, J&R is out of them again.
After searching for a place that just had them in stock for weeks, I finally was able to order one direct from archos yesterday. I am receiving the 8gb model today . It was 299.00 plus 30.00 for overnight shipping.
In December Amazon had them for $299.. free shipping.. I wouldn't pay more than $350.
I got mine off Amazon last week for $349.99 for 16GB with overnight shipping for $3.99 (shipping cheap due to my Prime membership). The next day they was up to $415.99.
So do I win a prize for getting mine for only $273? Seems I got the best price of the people that frequent this forum.
I think the Archos website store is now the best deal.. 101 16G for $349
https://store.archos.com/archos-internet-tablet-p-5005.html
It seems the demand is so high for these that they can't make them fast enough.
I have done a lot of research on Android tablets and the Archos 101 definitely gives you the most bang for the buck! There are a lot of cheaper tablets out there, but they don't have capacitive touch displays and/or cut corners on other specs. Even with the newer tablets coming out that have Honeycomb and dual core aren't as good of a deal.. $700 for a tab is way too much.. worth buying an Archos 101 now and waiting a couple of years for the newer dual core tabs to come down in price.

Yeah, but then there will be something new like Android Pudding version and quad core processors tablets which will make a dual core running Honeycomb seem stupid and slow.
If you want cutting edge you are going to have to pay the price (which will be $700-900) or you have to come to the stark realization that the cutting edge isn't that much sharper than the other edges. In which case the Archos 70 and 101's are the biggest bang for the buck in in the near future.
I got it from 270€ at Madrid, Spain, from an Archos wholesale.

I don't think that Android will ever need more than two cores.. Tablets are fairly new.. Netbooks have been around for a few years and the hardware hasn't changed.

And Bill Gates said that no computer will every need more than 640k RAM! But I keed, I keed....
Honestly, I gave up trying to predict where technology will go because I am always wrong. Back in the day I said the internet will fail because who on earth would pay money to do what you can already do for free with BBS systems? I thought the iPad would fail for the same reason many did...it was just a big iTouch, what's the point? I thought Netflix wouldn't last because isn't it easier and more satisfying to just get your video when you want it, the day you want it, etc instead of having to "plan out" your entertainment and hope you feel like that kind of movie the day it arrives?
So yeah...it's easier to say you don't see it going past dual core, but seriously...who would have ever thought a phone would need dual core as well...yet they are coming.
Never underestimate the power of people who want to be parted from their money just to have something better than their neighbors and friends.
I am debating to get my first tablet. But having a hard time deciding if I should get the Xoom or the Asus Transformer. Or should I wait to see whats coming in the next few months...
I researched and seems that the negative reviews of the Xooms was when it first came out so wanted some feedbacks from new owners or reviewers.
Please help me decide.
Rank these if your looking at the 32 gb models
1. Build quality
2. Updates
3. Price
if #2 is price then get the transformer
If you care about 1 + 2 then get the xoom.
If your worried about it being outdated then buy it from a place with a 90 day return policy for electronics

I don't know how you can do better on price than $399. at Staples for the fabulous Xoom.
Important to me is features and quality. I'm stuck between the two because I do like motorla products but the features on the TF looks great too. I've heard the TF has a better screen than the Xoom too. Is the correct?
Also, is there a retailer that has 90 return that can match the staples coupon?

The screen quality on the transformer is better. Light bleed on the transformer is a bit of an issue however.

Yea I just got the Asus today for a friend and paid $299 for that you really can't go wrong. The screen does look better and you have to ability to get the keyboard to make it a net book. She did that and I must admit its nice piece. I like my Xoom but if I had a choice since mine was purchased for me I would of gotten the TF...

@ OP The transformer has that laptop thing and a better screen + price vs functionality. The xoom has it matched everywhere else. If you don't plan on rooting then we are spoon fed from google.

At Staples you can get the Xoom for $398. If build quality mean's anything to you then Xoom is a No Brainer. This AWESOME device does not feel cheap. Screen looks great to me and I have 5 Blu-Ray's on it and get compliments all the time, and even from other ipad2 owners. Netflix looks Great. The Xoom for me

I do not know where he picked it up from but you can get it at Office Depot and they will honor the Staples coupon. Office Depot honored the coupon without any debate for me but if they do you can always point them to their policy:

How does our Price Match Guarantee work for in-store purchases?
If you find a lower price at another store on a new, identical item, show us the lower price at the time of purchase and we will match it on the spot. Or show us the lower price within 14 days of your Office Depot purchase and we will pay you the difference. Our price is the final price you pay after any discounts, coupons, instant savings and mail-in savings are applied. We will match the other store's point-of-sale price after deducting their instant rebates and coupons. We will not match the other store's mail-in rebates nor will we deduct the value of any gift with purchase.

MOBO Player, no lag at all. Used ANYDVDHD and DVDCATALYSTS 4 (Beta for Blu-Ray). Works Great
I have both devices and I am still trying to decide which one I like more. The Xoom is built better, no question. The TF has build quality issues, no question. The TF has IPS screen technology, a much better screen than the Xoom but you will deal with light leakage around the edges. The TF offers the keyboard dock which is probably my favorite feature. When I go anywhere with it, I can simply close it and set it down to protect the screen or case, then undock it with a simple slide button. I hate setting my Xoom down, it seems to leave it vulnerable to scratches or damage.
So my best advise is that no matter what you buy today, there will be a better device tomorrow. By Q4 2011, we should have a Tegra3 processor and Android 4 ICS. Then I will pony up for a "best device" and I'll be happy, for a week or so...
*EDIT*
Just for grins, I took a couple of pictures of the Xoom and TF side-by-side. Screen brightness set to 100% on all devices. TF on the left, Xoom on the right. Looking straight-on at the devices, there is a such a small difference. But at any side-to-side angle, the TF is definately better.
First image TF left, Xoom right straight-on
Second image TF left, Xoom right, 45 degree angle
Third image is TF left, Xoom center, VS GTab right straight-on

Q: How often do you need to view it from the side? Won't the Xoom offer more privacy from "prying eyes?"
I didn't buy my Iconia to spite Apple. My experience with the A500 is quite unusual. I was definately not in the market to buy a tablet when of all things, I saw a Rent-A-Center ad on TV for the Acer Iconia A500. I thought it'd be cool to give it a try!
I tried (the brand-new in a sealed box) the Iconia A500 and just fell in love. I read up on the Internet, I saw YouTube videos, I was sold on it. So there I was, paying rental fees on the Iconia and I knew I'd soon have to pay the first month (my deposit was like $50!) and that'd be just over $100.00. That's about 1/4th the cost of one to own, so that was a predicament.
I had the Iconia a week, was still paid up and bought one at OfficeDepot for $449. I turned the rental Iconia in after a week, still paid-up and surprised the salesman! Within a week, OfficeDepot and Wal-Mart were advertising them for $399, so I took mine back to OfficeDepot and the store manager was freaking out, afraid I was returning it. They happily gave me the 50 bucks on their price guarantee program. Wasn't sure if they had one, but figured I'd complain about their price and Wal-Mart's price. Didn't have to when the store mgr found out I wasn't returning it, so I left with 50 bucks!!!
I say this long, convoluted story for a reason. The Rent-a-Center I got that from had me on a waiting list to get it, so RAC's across the nation are putting thousands out there in the field. I loved it and ended up buying one. I'm sure I won't be the only one.
Thank God they weren't renting Ipad2s! I would have had no idea about .3 MP front and .97 MP rear cameras. mini and full-sized USB ports, HDMI you don't have to have a dongle to use as well as MicroSD! They don't "warn" Ipad 2 buyers about lacking all of those things the Iconia has for $100 less now after the price reduction! They don't tell you most of the Ipad 2 applications cost money while most of the Android apps are free. Heck, the game Need for Speed had me sold for quality gaming on the A500!
What made you buy the Acer Iconia A500?
I bought mine after giving up on the cheap chinatabs that lack support.
Very happy with my A500.
Not intending to put down the ipad 2. In fact, I think it is quite an engineering marvel. But no matter how much I try to like it, it still feels like an oversized iphone to me.

Well i have both and think both have their unique place for me and like both of them
I bought mine because it's my 3rd Android tab and I wanted 3.x on tablets. The UI improvements for me are amazing. I also own an iphone 4, so I don't need an apple product. That'll likely be my last Apple purchase however. Once I see how Android 4.x pans out on mobiles instead of just tablets, I will likely replace my iphone with one. I will probably keep the iphone around though. It costs roughly 40USD to unlock them here, so selling it might be an option also.
Another reason I got the Iconia is it was too hard to get the Transformer when it launched. Kind of glad that was the case now.
I returned a Toshiba Thrive after 2 weeks due to the sleep bug, and waited a bit. I found the Staples coupon for any tablet, $100 off. By this time the Iconia had come down from $449 to $399 and Staples was out of everything other than the Xoom and Galaxy. I didn't want either, but found that OfficeDepot would honor the Staples coupon on select models, the 16gb Iconia being one. So, for $299 plus tax I walked out with one!
One of the keys to the Iconia is the Gorilla Glass, http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/products-with-gorilla/acer , and the nice aluminum body. Honeycomb 3.1 and I'm a happy camper.

Hi guys
I thinking about getting this tablet used. I think i can get it at a fair price. 2000 DKK ~ 400$
Is it still good compared to the competetion?
The last tablet i owned was the Folio 100 which had a horrible OS and even more horrific viewing angles.
So would you guys still consider it a good buy? I have enough experience to root and install a custom OS if you find that to be necessary.

Is the price you quoted for wifi only or a 3G/gsm version?
The US wifi only models can be picked up for about $400 new with a great sale and coupon.
But imho the Xoom is a terrific tablet...I think that considering everything it is the best now available. I guess the viewing angles are better with some other tabs, but it has never been an issue for me.
It's for the WiFi only, but in Denmark retail priceses are much higher than US or other prices. Our VAT i suprisingly high. A brand new WiFi only tablet would cost me around 900$.
Well i'm glad to hear that. With the Folio if i tipped it 5 degress i wouldnt be able to read anything off the screen ^.^

No, Xoom is nowhere as bad as that! So that is a very good price. Grab it...then root it and update to HC3.2 using the wonderful Tiamat Rom, and get language support if needed. This tablet really comes alive with rooting/customization. And it's a complex computer but still very tough, inside and out. I love it.
See if you can get em to knock $50 off. We can get a new one for about 400 USD.

I just had 2 quick questions.
1) Does the family edition have a notification light like the original? I see a thing that looks like a light on the side, but I dont see anyone confirming it works like the original one.
2) I plan on using the camera a lot (I am being serious), but I was wondering if the lack of 2nd flash makes a real difference.
Thanks to anyone that can answer this!
I have the original Xoom and I'm happy with it. However, if I was buying a new tablet today, I'd pass on Motorola as the Asus Transformer Prime is the best out there right now. The camera on the TP specifically got high marks in the reviews.
The Xoom Family is $400 w/16gB and the TP is $500 with 32gB, but the $100 difference buys you so much more than 32gB.
Bad news is TP just started shipping and they're tough to get. You may also want to see what is announced next week at CES.

I thank you for the reply, but I got a transformer atm. I love it mostly for the apps it has, but it feels awkward to hold. I love the feel of the Xoom so I am jumping ship. Since I dont play games/do much past email/posting news/editing (during conventions) I was looking for something more professional. I love the status light of the Xoom, but I like the Family edition more. However that stupid light is a deal breaker so I want to know ><

Bad news is TP just started shipping and they're tough to get. You may also want to see what is announced next week at CES.

I'm on my second prime that I'm getting ready to return. between the dead pixel, light bleed and both non working GPS is driving me crazy. the camera is not better than the xoom in most cases the xoom is better in low light especially video recording. if I were to pay more than 400 today then I would try my luck to find a prime with working GPS and no screen issue. but I only paid 340 total for my xoom with three chargers (2 home 1 car) and a portfolio case so this makes the prime not worth it for me. only wish the xoom comes with IPS display, the prime thanks to IPS + is so easy to view outdoor.
Too bad about the quality problems because on paper the specs sound great. I had one on pre-order for weeks but cancelled it as my usage really isn't the gaming and the Xoom works fine for what I'm doing. One think I wanted it for was notes as it said it had a pressure sensing display. I decided to wait and see what CES brings. Maybe a real Xoom 2 or the next Thinkpad.
