bad emmc preventing me from flashing now.. - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is there anything else i can do to flash roms still? or am i stuck on my icecoldsandwich backup forever?

Bootloader version?

how would one go about locating this?

Reboot. When your screen goes black and backlight on keys goes out hold down volume down to boot into bootloader. Write down the info displayed at the top of the screen and post it here.

Is bootloader even relevant here? Anyway, are you sure its the eMMC? Usually symptoms for bad emmc include lag and ending up with a shiny paperweight. Why domt you try reflashing cwr?

Yes it is relevant. Very. Ever since the HTCdev unlocked boot loader came about I've seen some weird things. By telling us what bootloader he has we know exactly what he is dealing with.

Engineering bootloader. So you should be good to flash another rom. Reflash CWM recovery using ROM manager, just in case there is sonething wonky with your recovery. Download your desired rom. Reboot into recovery. Make a backup. Go to mounts and storage. Format system and data, and wipe cache. Go back to main menu and hit wipe data/factory reset. Then install your rom.
If you have tried those steps before to no avail then.... I don't know.

Tried flashing cwm again through rom manager again. I was getting hopeful when I noticed the bootanimation was lasting longer then usual...then my heart sank when it froze.
Just to make sure I did it right
I reflashed cwm using the rom manager app
Formatted system data and cache under mounts and storage
Factory data and full wipe them cache and dalvik
Flashed the latest version of the ice cold sandwich rom
And then freeze..

No, that was pretty frickin thorough. Man.... what a drag. I don't get it. Does anyone have any ideas at all?

Flash a non ics Rom, that might be it

what if you tried flashing one of those RUU files at least to get hte phone back to stock.
You know where you hook your phone up to the computer and then run the .exe file from your computer?

Okay so with that for reference, I'd like to find out why I can't flash CM7 without the blue Andy bootloop. I understand that a fresh install takes time to load, I gave it 30mins before a battery pull, I then returned the battery, hit the top power button and let that sit for another 20. Before I flashed the ROM (through recovery) I made the following wipes in this order; wipe data/factory reset and then wipe cache partition. I've flashed other ROMs that have flashed without issue (Ice Glacier 1.1.6 themed and Royal MIUI) but, lets face it CM owns. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for reading this.

No, Sense owns.
With that out of the way, the only thing I can think of is a corrupt download. Try re-downloading the zip to your PC and copying it to your SD. My other thought was a bad recovery, but since you've successfully flashed other ROMs, that doesn't seem likely.

Well then I retract my statement...
when you say bad or corrupted download I assume your talking about the recovery. I thought the same as well, Ive tried both versions of what was posted as the correct, best, and or easiest method of clockworkmod recovery. Im not sure if both versions were in fact the same recovery.img but they both worked for the roms Ive flashed except for cm (nightly 29, cm7-rc2, rc3,and rc4). The fact tjat I cant get this to work, only makes me want it more.

No, I mean the CM7 download. The actual ZIP file that you flash.
As far as recovery versions, only 3.0.0.5 and 3.0.0.6 can flash CM7.
Ive tried flashing several different versions of cm7, starting with rc-2 through rom manager. When that gave me my first boot loop I went back to the method I was more familiar with. With trying the different versions I don't see how they were all currupt or broken downloads. I haven't tried any of the cm froyo roms yet.
As far as my earlier statement of "cm owns" I mean no disrespect of any of the other rom developers (including those that did work properly the first time). Ive just came from the G1 and cm is the only rom I ran. Sense may be the best way to go, it's not something Ive given much consideration or time.
I have had the same issue except mine seems to be all 2.3 (Gingerbread) based roms, they all go to bootloop. I have no problem however flashing any of the 2.2 based roms. I also have cwm 3.0.0.6
I had the same issue everytime with different nightly releases. After wiping everything and formatting boot and system still would do it. I found if you wipe then install cm7 only the phone boots fine then reboot setup wifi if your using it the go back into recovery install gapps and it works fine.

Im unable to get a full boot. After reading several similar sorties I've always turned off all wireless radios. Will post a logcat later today.
Ok so was able to get mine to Boot completely Finally!!! I am somewhat of anoob so sorry if it seems confusing.
1.From recovery wipe data/ factory
2. Wipe cache
3.Advanced > wipe dalvik
4.Mounts>format boot
5.Mounts>format system
6.Advanced> partion SD card (I believe I used 256) No swap partition(dont know if it matters)
7.Mount USB and transfer cm7 and Gapps
8.Flashed cm7 only not apps.
9.Reboot phone (should boot all the way up)
10.Go back to recovery and flash Gapps
11.Reboot phone
My phone booted up very quickly. I hope this helps anyone else out there with the same issue

H,
Thought you might have some insight into this
The problem I have is it only shows the splash screen (stock splash is green "myTouch 4G" on white background) when
starting the phone.
Before this happened I had rooted the phone and updated the ROM and was putting some patches on the phone, Recovery shows
info as s-off.
To do a recovery I downloaded the stock ROM from a link here at XDA
(PD15IMG_Glacier_TMOUS_1.17.531.2_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155771_signed.zip I also did a hash check and it downloaded fine no corruption) renamed image with the exact name PD15IMG.ZIP (made sure it was not a
PD15IMG.ZIP.zip) and copied it into an empty 1 gig SD memory.
I re booted, did a factory reset x 2 after going to boot-loader, that did not help so I inserted the SD card with only
the PD15IMG.ZIP image in it and rebooted to recovery, but recovery does not ask me anything when it looks for the
PD15IMG.ZIP it says no image or wrong image (it also looks for PD15DIAG.ZIP, PD15IMG.nbh, and PD15IMG.zip same
message) and puts me back into recovery.
Any Ideas on what I should do ?????
Thanks

You shouldnt be going into recovery to try and flash the pd15img.zip. You have to go into hboot and wait for it to prompt you to do it.

^ what he said , those pd15img's should only be flashed in hboot , if it doesnt work then flash a reliable rom in recovery like cyanogenmod , if it continues to give you a splash screen , you MIGHT , have a failed emmc , theres always a chance , it happened to my G2 , it just randomly pooped out on me.

ClockWorkMod Recovery Problem

Hi, I used the paid version of ClockWorkMod Recovery to backup, then download the 'Cyclonic Rom'. Well, it rebooted to a 'Cyclonic Rom' startup screen (animated lettering) - but that's it. I'm wary to unplug the battery if it's actually flashing, but this has been going on for 20 minutes or more. Can I pull the battery and see what happens? How long does a new ROM take to install, this is my first one. Thanks.
BTW: These CAPTHCA's are getting tough! This will be the 4th try!
fixed it
I unplugged the battery and did a factory reset/format in ClockWorkMod. I rebooted and all seems well so far.
20 minutes is a looong time for Cyclonic to boot. Is it still working ok? As far as CW goes, I only use Rom Manager to downlod what I want/need. When it comes to flashing I wipe everything manually and flash from recovery. I don't trust the app. But thats me.

+1 to that. I always use the same Method for Flashing Roms ( The one linked in my Sig ) . Clear everything Manually. I try to never deviate from that. Reason being, after Flashing literally hundreds of times I've found it to be the most reliable way to Flash a Rom. Meaning the least amount of possibilities for issues later on down the road .

And don't forget to wipe dalvik.
I have been searching (as in using the 'search' function) for a solution or answer to this, but couldn't find anything. This seemed to be the best thread to dig up instead of starting a new one.
Within Clockworkmod, whenever I try to go into recovery (either trying to 'reboot into recovery' or installing a ROM from SD card), it always throws me into Android System Recovery 3e instead of CWM recovery. Of course the stock recovery doesn't recognize my downloaded ROM.
I've also noticed that trying to update a ROM in HBOOT via a new PG06IMG.zip file on SD root is not working, except to wipe all my system and apps data, and then returning me back to rooted 2.2. HBOOT seems to read the new zip file fine, but when I reboot nothing has changed.
I've read wiki and lots of other stuff, but I can't seem to find an answer except that MAYBE that I need a new kernel first??? Okay, let the flaming begin.

You need to flash recovery first, it is the first option in ROM Manager. You can't update a ROM with PG06IMG.zip, nor can you do it in the bootloader. Flash the recovery, wipe everything (data, cache, dalvik cache, system, sd-ext) then flash a ROM.
Did you get this sorted?

No, still having trouble. I have flashed ClockworkMod Recovery (version 5.0.2.0) in the ROM Manager app, but when I 'reboot into recovery' within the app, it goes to the Android System Recovery. I'm also confused about the 'apply sdcard:update.zip' option in ASR...seems like that would update something if the file was set up properly.
I guess I need to search for a tutorial on how ASR and HBOOT work. Sorry to bother you guys with the basics.

Will check it out, thanks! I'm leaving town today, so not sure if I will be able to experiment before I go, but I will not give up!
The only thing I use Rom Manager for is to get the recovery. The way I go into recovery is to turn my shift completely off (do a battery pull to make sure its completely off) then hold the volume down and power buttons at the same time until the bootloader screen comes on. (While there see if it says S-off near the top) then using the volume buttons highlight the recovery option and push the power button. Then when you're there use the volume buttons to navigate through the various fields and hit enter to select. I hope this is helpful to you. Good luck!
Edit: by the way, when you first get to the bootloader screen, it will automaticly do a check showing a few green lines. Thats ok. Just wait until its finnished then go into recovery the way I stated.

Finally got back to this and was able to install and use Dread's CW-Enhanced. So far I have only flashed the Speedy Rooted OTA 2.77.651.8 (bascially 2.3.4 rooted). GB had some features I was wanting, but missing, after rooting back to Froyo.
But before continuing on to other ROMs, I was wondering how you guys handle restoring basic apps and data each time you flash a new ROM. Or, do you only use extra play phones for new ROMs and not your daily user? It would seem that every time you flash, you need to restore SuperUser, Titanium, ROM Manager (ClockworkMod, then probably Dread's enhanced image file), Terminal Emulator, etc. And of course contacts and messaging history and other stuff like that.
So far, after flashing a ROM, I usually download Titanium (or MyBackup) and restore apps and data from backups before continuing. Do you just keep certain APK files on your SD card and install from ADB instead of re-downloading from Google Play Store each time?
I flash ROMs on my dd. Usually when I falsh a new ROM (not a nandroid) I fresh install my apps through the play store. Especially if switching between GB, ICS and JB! Some apps work well if carried over by tb but not all. You'll just have to experiment to see what works with your shift and what doesn't.
Also, the recovery only ever needs to be flashed once
What I used to do is backup my current rom with all my data and settings and then wipe + flash a new rom. If i liked it, then I would move my full box of apps and data to the new rom, but restoring data can go wonky so I always made a backup before doing that too. If i didnt like it, I would either restore my original backup for a bit or keep flashing new roms until I either found one I liked or got tired and restored my backup lol

Bricked - Boot Loop - About to Give Up

Didn't mean to double post - I could not find my original post this morning for some reason.
You're S-OFF. You'll be fine.
Have you tried a different ROM other than a RUU? Like a recent stock or stock-ish ROM?
Also, now that you have a good recovery on there, use it to wipe data, cache, system, and boot. Don't erase all your pictures and music, but nuke everything else.
The symptoms you are describing happen to me all the time when I have not adequately wiped between flashing different ROMs . It could also be a bad download (always check md5's )
Sometimes flashing a ROM that is way too old for your radios or bootloader could cause this, but it sounds like you're pretty up to date.
Get a different ROM (such as Captain Throwback's 5.67 stock ROM) and try again.
After trying all the obvious stuff, then *maybe* we can talk about bad SD cards, corrupted partitions, whatever..

Wait - you said it loops in recovery also?
That's not good.
Is this the same issue as the thread you started over in Q&A?
Now I'm not so sure there is an easy fix for this issue.
That radio is a little old and may be preventing your RUU from succeeding. Try updating?
After that, you might have to start looking at some kind of corrupt NV partition or something..

Im hoping to see that you are able to resolve this problem. Recently did a RUU update myself.
Turns out that everything updated minus the boot.
Which recieved a partition update. This was coming back from a bad kernel.
The phone is S-On sits on the 4 corner escalmations of death..

Be interested to see if you find something. In the mean time Ill be hunting form info as well and if I find a possible resolve Ill try and throw it your way. :/ miss my evo...

Mine boot loops with just about every ICS rom except (so far) the new chameleon one. It does the thing where if I get an incoming text when I try to check it it restarts the phone, and after a few days it boot loops permanently. What I mean by that is I'll try to use the phone and it's in the rom's splash screen just looping and looping and doesn't stop until I turn off the phone.. So when that happens I have to hold the volume down, turn the phone on, and wait until the boot menu comes up.. Then go into recovery and wipe data, cache, dalvik, and flash a new rom and gapps. It really sucks because I love PACman rom's and they boot loop the most.
Oh also my phone kept not booting once because my back button got stuck down.. So check your buttons too? Hopefully something there helps. I'm still trying to find out why PACman rom's hate me! Good luck!
Everybody please read the op in the developer's roms they all tell you to wipe cache/dalvik this what I do when I install any rom I throws out all the bugs and gets the rom moving normally

That's not it.. I wipe my data, cache, and dalvik cache 3x before flashing a new ROM. I think the problem may have something to do with the kernel the devs are using because both Pacman and evervolv roms do it the worst, and I noticed Pacman is using evervolv's kernel. chameleons ROM doesn't restart or boot loop on me at all..
I had same problem. I installed 4EXT recovery and formatted everything ext 4 +full wipe. Then installed a different kernel other than stock. That solved all issues.

Had success with factory data reset
Hello. I had the boot loop problem and tried everything (even the wierd twisting thing which worked for others, not me). I ended up fixing the problem by using the factory data reset solution. This is done by holding the power and volume up button until the screen lights up with options. Then select the factory data reset option.
THIS WILL WIPE OUT EVERYTHING except whats on your SD card. So you'll have to redownload all your favortie apps. But i actually liked that new phone feeling after the reset. Hope this helps someone.
