[REQUEST] English Recovery Parition - Shift General

Hi, I would greatly appreciate it if someone could upload the recovery parition (preferably English) to somewhere and provide a link; I bought my shift second hand and had Windows Developer Preview with no Recovery Partiton and I would be very thankful if someone could upload it.

Every previous post contains links that are broken or simply dumping and restoring insturctions so this is not duplicate.

I have an English Vista recovery on my Shift, but I don't know how I could copy it off, you could give me some information about it, I will take a look at it anyways tomorrow or so. If you could profide usefull information I could do it faster.
And.. Why do you want to recover the whole windows? I have done it once and I removed it directly and installed windows 7 on it. Its way faster, Everything works. And just a bit snappier and populair then Vista(alot of people were amazed by my shift, but when I said Vista was on, they were not amused xD).

Thanks, look at this link http://pof.eslack.org/2008/04/22/how-to-dump-and-restore-the-vista-recovery-partition-on-htc-shift/ and as for why I want to well I want to examine the default vista for some drivers, software, blocks, etc and I also want to modify it i.e. make it a Windows 7 Recovery Parition and I dont plan to recover over whole thing if any modify WAIK or OPK config to install different parition without erasing.
Thanks in advance by the way.

I found out how I can dump the recovery, but there is not really a possibility for me to store the whole recovery, maybe I could split it and upload it to mediafire.

I have tried to follow the instructions, which was actually very simple, but when I enter the cmd line, press enter it doesn't return a reply or something with writing or anything, it just enters and the white dot stays there, I don't know if this is normal =/

This Part
This part? "dd if=/dev/sda of=/media/disk/shift-vista-recovery.bin bs=16384 skip=2244480" if so leave it for about 45 minutes if it hasn't finished by then and returned to prompt then somethings wrong :/ but check if the file is there.
Oh and make sure you're copying the correct parition.

Recovery Image needed

Of course, as old veteran, I had to play with my shift. And playing for me means, get deep into that thing.
So I unhid the recovery partition and backed it up. I created a recovery DVD and tested it.
After, I enabled the full capacity of the HDD and ran the recovery. Everything went fine and Vista was back up.
I then formatted the beast again and installed ubuntu...again, no problem.
But then, to my shock, I couldnt run the recovery DVD anymore. Maybe carelessly, I dropped something on its surface and now it gives me a read error and breaks off the recovery. I used ImageX.exe to verify the Xvista.wim, but it confirmed that the wim was not
valid.
Too bad, but now I dont have a recovery possiblity.
I hope someone can help me. I am able to provide my 100mbit ftp for up and downloads.
Recovery
I am also looking for an English recovery image.
I found a nice tool which can mount *.WIM files as a standard drive or folder. With this tool its easy to modify the XVISTA.WIM and the BOOT.WIM.
All I need now is a working recovery partition.
I want to slipstream a Vlite version of Vista and see if i can get it all working.
HTC Service is a nightmare
I install the vista manager, trying to speed up the boot time, but it crash the vista.. , when i try to use F3 to recover, it show blue screen in the middle.
since no recover disc provide, so i try to install xp instead. But i found some function key not work on Shift. so i decide send back to HTC for fixing it, it just a a days only new computer. but HTC want to charge me HK$7XXX ( US$1000 ) . They said i void the warranty term because of installing XP. What i think is the hidden partition ( recovery ) has problem....
I am very disappoint with them, and i will tell everyone about their bad treatment to customer.
By the way, can someone help me to get the ORIGINAL image of the hdd. ??
i already uploaded my (english) recovery image to someone's ftp server.
it took me several days because my upload is less than 40kbyte/s.
so I don't feel re-uploading elsewhere, but:
the image is still on the ftp.
I'll ask if he can give access to you guys.

I already got the Japanese recovery dump there (Thanks very much to TokyoRob...cheers mate)
i can share my ftp
yes.. i can share my share open to public to if needed...
If an FTP would be available I would be glad to share my italian recovery image.

Problem solve , and HTC CARE ( HK ) really bad
Finally I solve the problem, maybe it can help some other user.
1. Format your HDD with Low level ( don't use quick format ) .
2. reboot and press Shift F3....
3. All the blue screen and error won't appear again.
I am happy with it, but i spend more than 2 days to solve the problem.
But I am very disappoint with Hong Kong HTC, they want to charge me for us$1000 to fix the problem, and claim that i damage the hardware, and need to replace the motherboard... I just brought if for few day and under warranty.
They are really cheating customer. I hope their management guy to contact me by [email protected] , and APOLOGIZE for their BIG mistake.
I will post to all FORUM , newsgroup and let the user know how they treat the customer.
First Recovery Image up
The first image file is up and can be grabbed from here.

Thanks to TokyoRob, who kindly sent me the image file.
Its a 3GB bin file, dumped by using Pof's guide, which can be
found here

***I believe the language is Japanese,*** ITS IN ENGLISH!!!!! but I already created a patch to change a fresh installation to any desired language.
More about this later.
I would appreciate it, if someone could send me another recovery image
and also the /Program Files/HTC folder.
unfortunately the guy who has the ftp hasn't replied to me yet and I don't want to give out the login info without permission.
in the worst case, if you can guarantee the image will indeed be public for a long while, then I can take the pain to upload it again to whatever server you give me a login to.
still no reply from this guy I mentioned; but someone else also has the english recovery partition (in 7z, yuck!) on a server, this is not public, but I asked him to PM you all. please do not give out the login info he gives to you.

When decompressing Shift_Recovery_Partition_Content.7z with both 7Z or WinRar, the WIM file shows as being corrupted. Would you please repack / verify? Thanks!

metro themes

Hi all!
I was just wanting to see what other people were using as their metro wallpaper. I was getting bored of the old ones I made and I was still using the consumer preview imageres file so I just started over for the release preview.
Here is my current one (ignore the break in the middle, its just more of the same starfield). Looking forward to seeing what other people are using so that I can steal it
How do you crate that ... it's beautiful
You change the imageres.dll file.
This isn't the exact walkthrough that I used, but it is similar enough (it is in italian so you may need to translate.
http://windows8italia.forumfree.it/?t=60566861
Then it is just a matter of finding an image you like and splitting it in half in a logical way.
I see that someone is following my guides.
This is my first post here and I did not imagine finding this my guide
This guide I made on the Consumer Preview, however, also works on Relase Preview.
If there are errors or incomprehensions let me know

Yep it is a great guide. :victory:
The other one that I had used before was on Tweakscene but all of the good stuff seems to be behind a paywall now. There was another one that I had used in the past on a chinese site, but I don't even know how I got there in the first place, let alone how to find it again.

There are many things to do to improve Windows 8 more ...
This, however, was one of my first guides, and, I repeat, I had written when there was still the CP.
If there are "Resource Editor" that double as command, I could make a more automated little program for customizing the start-screen, although it is very difficult ...
It looks very nice.
Any way to do this without a dual-boot setup? I tried safe mode and the dll is still in use.

Unfortunately I think it's difficult to do this with Windows only 8 to edit.
You need at least another Operating System that is able to read NTFS partitions, or you must use the CD of Windows Vista / 7
I could think of to "take ownership" and the popular program "unlocker" but I think they can do little on 'OS to change.
Since we all have, I believe, the DVD of Windows 8 (CP or RP), I could find a way to use that. I have to do some small tests first.
Unfortunately the installation DVD of Windows 8 is different from that of Vista / 7 and has been removed according to navigate through files, I'll try and see
[edit]
Ok, I found a way to use the DVD of Windows 8.
In a little 'I'll do a article on my site of the guide and get better compared to the one linked, making it easier and more complete and adapting to the new method and the RP
Stay tuned
p.s. If there are criticisms and suggestions, tell me, so I can make a better guide for you

I do it all within windows 8. I don't think it is too difficult.
Here is what I do:
1. Swipe to the charm and go to settings -> change pc settings -> general -> advance start-up options.
2. Once you restart you'll see three metro-esq icons (continue, troubleshoot, turn off PC). Select troubleshoot -> advanced options -> start-up settings.
3. The computer will restart again and you'll get your various start-up options. Select #6. Safe mode with comand prompt.
4. At the cmd prompt take ownership of imageres.dll (takeown /f C:\windows\system32\imagres.dll
5. Restart and go into the system 32 folder on the PC and copy find the imageres.dll file.
6. Right click and change to the security tab and check the box for full control.
7. Copy the file to the desktop or where ever you want to work on it.
8. Change the file with resource hacker as described above to insert your images.
9. Go back to the advance reset options and reset back into safe mode with the cmd prompt. Copy the file from your desktop (or where ever) back to the system 32 folder. (copy c:\users\[user name]\desktop\imageres.dll c:\windows\system32)
You should get confirmation asking to overwrite the file and if the permissions were set correctly you'll get confirmation that the file was copied. When you reset the computer you'll see the new theme in the settings menu.
Good luck!
4. At the cmd prompt take ownership of imageres.dll (takeown /f C:\windows\system32\imagres.dll

I did not think that the "take ownership" really worked
I thought the file imageres.dll was blocked by Windows as a process and not just as a library-resource

Hey guys,
I made this this afternoon. I wanted something different from the rest that didn't steer too far away from the "norm" that didn't look tacky. gosh there are some really tacky wallpapers getting around.
Anyway I am not even sure any of you will even like this, I am not sure if I even like it yet .....it's growing on me I guess?

SUCCES! Adding content to HTC 8S stock Rom

Hey guys, I don't know if this is of any use for you, but I think it won't hurt to share it.
Based on some posts and ideas I read in different threads, I managed to write to the EFIESP and the PLATpartition of the stock rom of my HTC 8S. I changed the bootimages in the PLAT partition to a custom one, flashed the image and it worked. I'll attach a picture to prove it and if that's not enough, I will post a video.
So, the first step is to download the stock rom (obviously...) and extract the .exe file. (I use 7-ZIP) Then there is a file called "RUU_signed.nbh". If you open it with a Hex Viewer, like HxD, you can find multiple partition Headers. I found 4 that I can use, the rest is encrypted with what appears to be Bitlocker, hence the different headers. Now, what I did was mark the area of the first partition (starts approximately at offset 228BEF90 and is a FAT16 Partition) and continued the selection until the end of the file. Then I created a new one and pasted it. I ddid the same with the rest, always selecting and copying from where the partition starts until the end of the whole file and pasted it into a new one. Then I mounted the files using OSFMount and voilà, you can put stuff and files in there! If you finished, you just unmount the files. Then I opened each file again with HxD, selected EVERYTHING and pasted it
to the according area in the original RUU_signed.nbh. I started with the first one, then the second and so on, so you don't overwrite the changes you have made if you start in reverse order. After packing the file, I tried to flash it and to my surprise, IT WORKED! After rebooting I saw my custom bootimage! Downside of this is obviously that it requires you to use the stock firmware and it will be overwritten once you update your device. But I hope our skilled Devs here have some use for those 2 partitions. Theres 2 more that are usable, but I don't know their names, but you can still put files in them.
Now again, I don't know if this is of any use for you devs, but I still felt kind of obligated to share it
Stupid thing, I put my HTC 8S into Diag Mode and THEN flashed it, now it doesn't connect as MTP but as HTC Diagnostic Interface and I can't change it back because I can't deploy anything to the device. It works perfectly, boots and everything, but no USB Connection via MTP. So be very careful before flashing, since the mode is determined by a NV value which you can't edit afterwards.
This is not a tutorial to be followed by everyday users, but something ment for developers. You do everything at your own risk! And keep in mind that this has only been tested on an HTC 8S!
cheers, hutchinsane_
Yeah, I heard that it is possible, though I hadn't had a chance to test it on my 8X.
As for EFIESP: you can edit \efi\Microsoft\Boot\BCD to enable Kernel Debugger functionality and it is basically enough to hack the whole OS even with actions currently performed.
The most interesting partitions are MainOS (second to last), and Data (last one). Interop Unlock can be done in MainOS.
Thing is that newest ROMs are encrypted (not hard to crack but still)
Darn, hoped I was the first to come up with the idea. I do have acces to the file you're talking about. MainOS seems to be encrypted with Bitlocker since their headers start with -FVE-FS-. I could take a look into the 8X Rom aswell, I expect the situation to be the same. So is there a thread on the Kernel Debugger thing?
EDIT: I just did what you set, although I used a program called "Visual BCD Editor" since I don't know about editing the BCD Store just YET. Now I edited some values from "False" to "True" and for 1 second it showed me what appeared to be a windows boot selection. Now when I boot up, and once the "Windows Phone" blueish logo appears, it shows "Not for resale", meaning that we actually can edit BCD on this device!
Very nice Work
I run in Nokia Lumia 920 RM-821 APAC Malaysia Amber ROM
I find the same
Maybe we can edit Lumia 920 FFU and get first Custom ROM
that's enough to enable WinDbg operopability.
Code:
bcdedit /store F:\EFIESP\efi\Microsoft\Boot\BCD /dbgsettings usb targetname:woatarget
bcdedit /store F:\EFIESP\efi\Microsoft\Boot\BCD -set {default} debug on
bcdedit /store F:\EFIESP\efi\Microsoft\Boot\BCD -set {default} dbgtransport kdusb.dll
Sorry for my Question but how can we find that here is the end of a file in HxD .
I'm now looking for it to flash a Custom Rom on my Lumia 920 but I can't build images correctly using HxD and OSFMount.
Thanks .
@ngame Thanks If you look at your first 2 screenshots, you didn't select the "ë" You MUST select and copy it aswell, it's always the start of a partition, fot FAT aswell as for NTFS. After that, you should be able to mount. For finding the end, I didn't. I just Selected until the end of the file and pasted it back in. It should work, Afterall, my HTC has a "custom" rom aswell now, since there's a custom bootimage
@ultrashot Thanks! I used the commands and it worked succesfully. Waiting on the phone to flash now
EDIT: It doesn't boot once you set a) the target b) the type or something else. but enabling the kernel debugger itself works. Trying to figure out which value makes it unbootable.

Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question ...
Here is a list of partitions from my 928 .ffu but which ones are needed to edit? Just the FAT and NTFS partitions? Are any of the others of any interest?
As far as I know, you have to look for the specific headers, since some are encrypted with Bitlocker, therefor have the "-FVE-FS-" header. Easiest way is to use the search function of HxD and search for NTFS, FAT12 and FAT16 partitions Also, there are no stupid questons

:highfive: Here's a better list including the device layout and read and write partitions if it helps anyone. Also when mounting FAT16 or FAT12 partitions it says it needs to be formatted or is unsupported. What am I doing wrong???
Can you ost a screenshot of the file you use as a partition? I don't know if it even works with Nokia Roms. Which one are you using exactly? I might be able to have a look at it.

6055U Root method found

Hello all, I found a method to Root and get a custom recovery on our cricket variant, no donations required! You need to find a copy of sugar qct with a username and password, I don't remember exactly where I found it but it shouldn't be too difficult to find. Then you need to let it update to the latest build, which includes the programmer for our phone. If you don't see 6055u in the list it's not up to date. From there, Hook up your phone (may need to manually put it in download mode. Press upgrade and then navigate to the install directory, look in /bin and find where it downloads all the mbm files. Replace the one that starts with an r with the TWRP recovery for 6055. You may have to overwrite it multiple times during the process. If you did it correctly you will be able to boot into TWRP, if not try again. If you don't close sugar I believe it won't overwrite the firmware files, but I haven't messed with it much. I will try to write a tool to make it easier when I have the time but I'm pretty busy. Feel free to pm me with any questions and I will help the best I can.

Did a Google search for "sugar qct" and I see a couple of million hits for "The Sugar Act"...
Tried Root Genius, and it, of course doesn't work...
If you happen to find a link for the app or method you stated, I would be eternally grateful... My lovely wife and I upgraded our phones to the Cricket 6055U, and, since, while not an Android developer, per se, can find my way around the device without being scared off...
So, with due respect, I'd ask if you have the app or name correct?
Thanks, friend, and best respect.

Oops... was premature... found it and am giving it a try... I'll post my results after I give it a shot...

This should help with setting up sugar. The only difference here is to update it and you also need a username and password that I don't have on me at the moment. It will be a few hours until I get home but I will update asap.
Edit: nevermind lol, good luck friend. You may need a decent battery percentage as well

OK... apparently I'm an idiot... Running Windows 10 Pro, and the installer says it's going to install to an appropriate folder on C:\... yet, trying to find it, it really is weird.... I'm going to try on a VMWare Win 7 virtual PC, and see if I'm able to find it there, and move it to my actual C: drive...
If it works, I'll be grateful for your contribution and praise you to the highest heaven!

Can't seem to get the beast to work...
If you would be so kind, would there be any way you'd be able to write up a concise step-by-step thing, if you've made it work... I've got the .chm file open on my desktop, and have spent a few hours trying to make it work to no avail.
Again, if it worked for you, your process would be welcome.

My point is that the site recommended seems to insist on Lollipop on the small beast... and there doesn't seem to be a recommendation for the .bin files, and, when installing on Win 10, it seems to install the Sugar app into some directory on my C: drive that is really not that accessible... Did it using a VMWare Win 7 32-bit virtual, and was able to access the directory, copy and paste to my regular C: drive (old Windows geek since Win 3.11... and DOS 3), and it seemed to run... (of course, running as Administrator), but it really doesn't seem to work for me... Again, I freely admit that I'm likely not doing something right, but even after some research and the included .chm file, I seem to be missing something.
Again, and begging your indulgence for seeming like a noob or a rube, but if I'm not making it happen, I rather think that the tips would be lost on someone for whom this is their first Android device...
Kinda frustrating, as, even though I've been a tech-support guy and database developer for more than 30 years, this thing has me stymied...
I found it fascinating for the *#*# command, earlier, from another noble soul, and, obviously, I also found that the device as configured says, basically... "Don't give a damn... you can turn this sucker on, but as soon as you exit this menu, I'm gonna turn it off again."
Just a little frustrating, and it seems that most of the tips and tricks elsewhere seem to be thinking that new owners of the 6055U are running Lollipop.... aaarrrgggghhh....
If it needs Lollipop to work, and if there's a relatively painless way to downgrade, and then upgrade from a ROM, I'm good with that... the Idol 3 seemed to require that, and it worked well for me, with just an evening's work. This one? Cricket seems to have had a warped sense of humor about it... I seriously dig the device, and, since my Idol 3 broke, and my lovely wife's LG G-Stylo (which was a pain in the ass, and next-to-impossible to root, and then be just perpetually stuck at the logo screen with an unfixable boot loop, if one screwed it up, and just required sending the beast back to LG, as long as one took out Cricket's warranty plan... <sigh>), we took the plunge on this one...
Not much for which I require root, but, since I spent good money on some legit apps (and lucked into a few ... ahem... not legit apps that worked for me), these things require root... I know there's a way to do it, and the Sugar app seems promising, but, mildly autistic guy that I am (and 60 years old, with a memory that doesn't work as it used to), a slimmed-down step-by-step doc would be helpful... should some noble soul put such together...
Apparently, the root method has worked for at least one member here.... But this weird old Jewish hippie doesn't see the mental diagram....
Any help would be welcome, my friends and mishpocheh... ("dear family" --- been here enough years, albeit a relatively quiet member, that y'all might as well be family... )
Hey everyone, sorry about the confusion. I installed on Windows 10 pro with no issues. As far as the page I linked you can disregard everything but the app itself. The update that downloads is marshmallow, and I've had no issues overwriting the latest version. I may have gotten sugar from a different location though, as soon as I get a chance I will do a better write up with everything. A helpful way to find the install directory would be right click on the shortcut from the start menu and click find Target / open file location. If it brings you to the folder with the shortcuts do it again and you will have the install directory. The app should be in (install dir)/tool and the downloaded updates go in (install dir)/bin under a folder that only shows up once you start the process within sugar. I will try to compile the information into a more user friendly format tonight but I can't make any promises on that.
Also just to clarify, I didn't use any chm file
I'm wondering if you could upload your version you have on your pc. I just spent the last month in jail here in Orlando fighting a case and the only proof I've got is on my phone on a phone that I deleted my videos on. I really need the videos back too get a not guilty if I gotta pay for it it's cool but I'm out on bond and all the recover videos apps require root
I got this to work last night. Typed up some instructions but didn't get them posted. They're on my PC at home and I'm at work.
Basically use the copy of sugar in the download package in this thread and then start it and let it update https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/recovery-vodafone-prime-tab-7-t3548560
Those are the basic instructions too except we don't need to swap out bout and use the TWRP from deckersu thread.
Once flashed it'll automatically reboot. I found you had to make sure you caught this and booted into TWRP right away don't let the phone boot. Then transfer SuperSU in TWRP and flash.

FYI this root method wipes your phone so I don't know if this will help your situation or not.
In sugar there is an option to not wipe, it's under session settings or something to that effect

Wish I had noticed that!! Oh well, stoked to have root and it's good to start fresh. Got Xposed installed today and finally got that annoying charging light turned off. Working on getting wifi tetherng working. Then if I can figure out how to get the dialer to be friends with Google voice this phone will have all its annoyance fixed
Thanks so much for figuring this out and sharing!!

Thank you for finding this thread, it is the same one I found but I couldn't remember where it was the other day when I started this thread. Hopefully this will help the people who have been having issues, although I will admit a more painless method would be preferable. I'm currently working on modifying a dirtycow exploit to simply flash the recovery and reboot into twrp, if I get it to work I will zip it all up and post it here.

I got wifi tethering working I did a lot of things but I believe that did it was adding net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to my build.prop then I went into system/app and changed serviceentitlement.apk into serviceentitlement.oat using es file Explorer

Thanks for figuring this out!!! I'd been messing with it for a few days. The renaming the apk to .oat was the piece I was missing. That and a reboot got it working!!
