[Q] How to Backup/Download all Nook Content - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm feeling really DUMB, but anyway I need to know/understand "How To Backup or Download a stock Nook Color" Model: BNTV250 , Software: 1.4.2 .
I want to save everything before I root it, which is strongly suggested. Searching has not helped.

[Q] restore to 1.1.0

I have a new Nook Color that I tried to turn into a tablet using a guide on another site. I don't know what I messed up or where but instead of only having the new OS on the memory card it overwrote the Nook itself.
After I start the Nook Color it says Welcome to LogicPDZoom2 and wants me to to some setup.
I want to revert this nook back to how it was from the factory so I can restart the entire process after reading how here.
Will someone with compassion help me out?
You're new here, but you'll see this reply a lot. Please search before you post new threads...please. You'll find your answer mapped out in perfect detail in the thread below, which I found by searching the words restore and stock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931720
On a more friendly note, welcome aboard, I think you'll find the nook color to be a magnificent piece of equipment. When you're ready to venture into something better than stock again I'd recommend using the guide below to try out CM7.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227&highlight=install+cm7
Don't be afraid to play a little as your confidence grows, the nook is pretty much unbrickable, and there are some beautiful technical minds in this community who have enabled us to do wonderful things.
I saw that thread but it references NC 1.0.1 and I was not sure if it was safe to use 1.0.1 on a 1.1.0 system. I'm still holding off until I can find a 1.1.0 image.

Doesn't matter which stock you install, as you will get the 1.2 update (or you can go to B&N and download it manually).
That is very good to know. I was afraid of causing more issues by putting an older stock than it shiped with on it.
I was able to do the reversion and update the system to 1.2 and then install Cyanogen 7 onto a memory card but I'm getting timeouts
The time outs seem cusred by switching from a 16GB PNY card to a 16GB Sandisk card

Nook Color Mac Issue

Trying to root nook color using directions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358051
I download the apk file and it comes up with the blocked dialog. I must be completely stupid because after running apk, it tells me to press "setup" and their is no "setup" available. I tried as well going to setup through N button->setup but the things mentioned in instructions are not there.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Greg
Probably because that's for the Nook.

[Q] I require different Nook Color boot image & CM7

I have gone through this forum (and google search) for a few days now, and I run into a wall I haven't been able to solve.
I bought mine December 2011, came with OS 1.4.2.
1) It seems my nook requires different boot files than the regular ClockWork 3.x files have. I found 1 image with clockwork 5.5 that seems to have the right boot files! Question: Is there a 'new' generic image?
2) With that one, the assert .... = 'encore' fails, in other words the 'newer' nook is not an ENCORE device. - some folks suggested zip file is bad, but has nothing to do with it at all - I'm not afraid, so took out the assert after which CM7 installs, as does Gapps...zip (Unfortunately it doesn't boot android, but rather tries to factory reset itself, guess BN doesn't like us making these into ANDROID devices)
3) So I wiped factory reset which fails at some point. Keep getting the ADOBE loader on boot-up. There must be a file somewhere I cannot reach that prevents me from deleting the files that bootstrap itself into factory reset. (But since I wiped everything else, it won't factory reset anymore LOL)
4) Came across the option of making a bootable SD Drive with CM7 on it. However, cannot find a bootable image that I can use, plus am very afraid the CM7 mod won't work on mine.... Not sure, will try anyway.
However, would like to try this, I can sacrifice 500MB and keep the 15GB that is left.
5) I started this.... not because I have no android tablet ( we have two) but after 6 months of my daughter complaining that her favorite games are not available on her nook.... I tried to 'side-load' Google-Market on the machine, which didn't work... (probably because of the same 'newer version OS') after which I decided to go all the way...
Anyway, I will muddle on, but need a bootable image for my newer nook, and probably a hint as to what my assert value (and with that my CM7 version) should be. Only reference I found so far was assert ..... = 'blaze' but that didn't work either.
I would have posted this in a thread for an SD bootable CM7 but it wouldn't allow me for being too new... Hey I'm a noob and proud of it
Thanks for anyone who can help.
James
Are you sure you don't have a nook tablet? They have an assert value of acclaim. It looks just like a nook color, but silver. It also runs 1.4.2.

Everything went smooth. I will (try to) post my procedure and all files I used, so anyone can do this easily.

You did remove the uSD card after rooting, right? I've rooted using Touchnooter many times, and my boot screen still shows "Read Forever" (not rooted forever).
If that's not the problem, you might reset back to stock to try again. Be 100% sure you have a good backup before attempting this!
thanks for reply
My nook is not registered. I don't have access to wifi and don't have credit card. can i upgrade firmware on unregistered nook .

Why dont you have WiFi working? You do not need credit card to register, you can select to "add it later".

hello everybody
my nook is now registered
. i first followed the cwm minimal touch method.i burned the 2gb cwm img file on my sd card then copy beta two zip files . i inserted the card in nook and turned it on. surprisingly nothing happened. nook went on normally and no rooting done.i then switched to nook devs mr gabriel method. i downloaded 2.1.31 and burned it in card.after inserting i started on nook .the online instructions cam and then after 2 minutes the nook page started but my nook hanged.i somehow managed to switch off nook by pressing power and right side to side buttons. i again tried to do it but to no gain. i deregistered and again registered the device and then downloaded the touchnooter 1.6.24 image and then repeated the process. rooted forever screen comes but my nook again hangs . i have updated my nook to 1.1.2 but now even after deregistering and registering my nook is not downgrading to 1.0.0 firmware. i m again stuck .please guide what should i do .
thanks in advance
1st , write ur backup image , then do hard reset to ur nook and if ur software version is 1.1.0 upgrade to 1.1.2 and then try reroot with minimal touch nooter .... and follow the instructions very carefully
good luck

[Q] [N2E][1.0] Rooting NookManager Over TouchNooter 2.1.31

Hello:
Due to a failed factory settings recovery attempt my My N2E is as follows:
On firmware version 1.0.0
IRooted with TouchNooter 2.1.31
My main goal is to root it my N2E using NookManager. For that, I understand that:
First, I have to upgrade the N2E to firmware version 1.2.1
Then, I can root it with NookManager
But (and here's the catch) after upgrading to 1.2.1 (pre requisite for NookManager) the N2E will be still rooted with TouchNooter 2.1.31 which I understand happens to be incompatible with N2E on firmware version 1.2.1
Even if I succesfully get to root the N2E to NookManager inmmediately after upgrading to 1.2.1, shouldn't it be an issue?
Keep in mind: I'd be rooting NookManager on top of an N2E already rooted with TouchNooter 2.1.31
Isn't that a brick scenario or am I missing something here?
Thanks in advance,
Point 1: There is no brick scenario for the Nook.
Whatever you can do can be undone using a system booted off the SD card.
For the white Nook, which has no SD card, there is the boot over USB to resuscitate it.
Boot over USB also works for all the other model.
Point 2: If you have a non-white Nook there is no reason to use any system version besides 1.2.1
1.3.X on the white Nook is a mish-mash of old and new versions.
If we ever discover anything good about 1.3.X we can cherry-pick it out to add to 1.2.1
Point 3: Before you start modifying your Nook you should have a backup of the /rom/devconf directory.
You may not have any interest in doing business with B&N, but the MAC, serial number, battery info is important.
Point 4: I know nothing about either of these "managers".
If you are at 1.2.1 just use whatever manager thingie you want to.

Thanks again for your prompt reply.

How's that "booting form USB" works? BTW, I have a Nook Simple Touch "original"; the one sold with the 1.0.0 firmware.

OK, I do believe that the NookManager root method/tools/boot includes it's own backup manager, so that would be a "plan b" scenario.
Do you recommend an other nook backup utility?

Hmm... What root method do you currently use with your Nook? Is it a N2E, N2E with GlowLight, other?
Awaiting your kind comments,
OK, here's how you fix your issue...
1. Insert Nook Manager microSD, boot it, select Restore Factory Image (or something like that...). This will restore your Nook to version 1.0 (I believe, I have done this 2 or 3 times, it's 1.0 or 1.1). Follow the instructions. In the end you will remove the Nook Manager card, and reboot.
This should, if I understand correctly, re-install the factory image that is stored on your Nook. Unless TouchNooter (or something else you did) modified that, you should be good to go from here. If something has modified the factory image, then it gets way more complicated, because part of that image is data that is unique to your Nook. So, you can't just get someone elses factory image, as it would have their unique data in it.
That said, if anything did modify your factory image, I for one want to know, that needs to be stopped.
2. Download the update for 1.2.1 from B&N (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Software-Updates-NOOK-Simple-Touch/379003175) and follow the instructions to install it.
3. Re-insert the Nook Manager card, and root with Nook Manager.
