Stability vs. Customization. I was a CM Fanatic(CM Donator) on my Nexus One until buggy laggy nightlies shifted me over to the far more stable & silky smooth MIUI but w/ MIUI I lost some customization that was there w/ CM7. Looking forward to Cyanogenmod getting their ish together and releasing a new stable so I can give them another shot.
I've moved both ways in the 12 months that I've had my Nexus. I started out using CM6.x, then thought I'd try MIUI when Rod started his mod (which is awesome btw). When CM7 hit Gingerbread, I couldn't resist and flashed the first nightly (fully expecting to go back to my MIUI nandroid). That Nand is long since deleted and I'm a fully fledged CM7 lover.
I can't really explain the exact reasons for each change. I think I just like something different once in a while, and when CM took the best bits from MIUI (FM radio, toggle bar in notification area etc) I had no reason to stick with MIUI.
I think my next "Big Flash" will be either a Sense ROM (never tried one) or Rod's GB MIUI...
Sense ROM are awesome

Yes. MIUI is boring, yet CM is breathtaking ... been trying RCADSmix Sense 3.0 N1, new experience: new freezes, new force closes, new bootloops
So you're complaining that nightly/experimental builds of cm7 is buggy not stable. Go figure.

This is probably my next port of call... Just need to get a bigger SD so I can fit the 1Gb Ext partition in...
CM7 all the way
MIUS looks boring
CM7 seems just like stock Android... I mean it's much more stable and offer a few more customizations compared to stock android.
But MIUI is a different experience altogether. You can change the launcher if you don't like the iPhone-like app organization you can change the launcher. However, MIUI's messaging, contacts and various functionality built in is very well thought out and I find it really convenient to use without relying on 3rd party apps. Besides, since MIUI is based on CM7, it is just as stable.

i don't think MIUI is based on CM...its built from scratch using aosp... that's the main difference between these two..

stick your apps into categorised folders on the home screen, much more productive than having them all over the place.
I've tested MIUI & CM7
CM7 is now my daily ROM 'cause MIUI is sometimes laggy on my N1 & I don't like the iOS interface
MIUI ! bigger dev team, more support, nice and stable ROMs
Its been about three months since I have checked on the CM9 Rom developments and I see that A LOT of different devs have released a version of ICS. Which is your favorite? Thanks

I just recently loaded the "Reloaded 1.1" and it is pretty good, but not quite ready for primetime yet as it seems to freeze up often, screen doesn't wake correctly, wifi doesn't wake correctly.
These guys are doing amazing work, can't wait to have one that is 100%.
Currently have cm9 reloaded on my KF and havent experienced any freezing at all. I guess YMMV

I'm using the Energy ROM atm. No issues with anything besides HW accel.
Scores 3500+ in Quadrant.
But most ICS ROMs are the same atm.. All waiting for the 3.0 kernel to shine
I'm running reloaded. I've been using it for about a week and it's only SOD'd on me once. Wifi works fine. The only thing that's goofy is that my notifications settings won't stick. Either way, works good and my internet connection is too slow to redownload everything under a new rom install
I originally came from CM9 reloaded, the SOD problems were too much to handle. In currently running energy rom and it its really nice, only one SOD problem.

All The CM9 have the same problem at least that what I discoverd when I try it
but smoeway I see that Reloaded 1.1 is the best for me, it had the elegance and the beautiful look of the ics
about the problems all the ics have the same problem, the freez up and they all waiting for the 3.0 kernel and hope for the best
My sig says it all, and I haven't had any SOD issues. The MIUI kernel on ENERGY ROM allows OC to 1300mhz also, which can be a problem for some because not all kindles can handle that OC, for then, they can flash intersect ravens kernel.
I think most of the issues people have with CM9 ICS ROM's are kernel related, and at this point, the ROM's themselves are all pretty much built with the same code.

energy & modaco
personally the energy Kant cm9 Rom is my fav as looks have it but the modaco gr8 Rom has the best daily functionality.
I'm coming out with a stable AOKP (Reloaded, duh!) with 3.0 kernel, I have gotten many requests for that and I think people will enjoy it. Right now, I am running it and it's pretty good, it's not released yet but has many of the same features as CM9 Reloaded.
I'm running the Reloaded ROM and love it. I'm really looking forward to the 3.0 kernel (along with everyone else )
Reloaded is the best I've found so far!
I am running CM9 Reloaded 1.2H. Best ROM I have tried so far.

I am running the AOKP Milestone 5 from lithium76 of Team Kang.
Based on Hashcodes latest kernel with full HWA and all, it is running very smooth.
And I like the little tweeks and custom options. E.G. the navbar buttons with the menu button like on my Nexus S instead of the three little dots.
Really runs like a dream together with Nova Launcher Prime.

I have been running the unoffical CM9 by jmztaylor since the first release. Has been the best for my phone at least and very good battery life. You should just try them out and go with the one that your phone has the best results with.
gummy worms is still a valid ics rom but you are gonna be lacking hardware accelleration (hwa) and camera/camcorder can work but also is being reported broken sooo yeah
the lastest of aokp is known for being full of reboots (but as a side note i have only had 1 reboot so far but has some graphical glitches with menu's but nothing to knock it down any so again beware it could be different on your phone) but b33 has been the strongest /most stable but is lacking the camera fix but there is a zip you can flash with it.
jamie has an ics rom with hwa but doesnt have the customization tweaks that you find in aokp but i have had ZERO reboots in my experinces there is a camera fix used in aokp will most likely work for you here to since they are based off the same (correct me if im wrong please)
decks i have little experience with the latest builds so i'll leave someone else to input on that
same iwth cm9 but its been comin to the party a bit later but i hear its stable and on its way to being a good daily rom for most and i think the camera works but no camcorder/panoramic(again correct me if im wrong please i havent run this particular one so im pulling that from memory of reading thread)
I installed the Unofficial CM9 and I was all good until its start freezing and rebooting

Swipers MIUI ICS is amazingly stable.
You can't beat it
I've been using Deck's builds as daily drivers for a while now not quite as many features as AOKP or CM9, but quite stable on my handset. YMMV of course.
With ANY of the ICS ROMs you're looking at feature incomplete alpha or beta level builds. So "stable" is a relative term.
Dark light version 3.5 has been the most stable on my evo, plus its all themed out in black and white.

KWIQ ICS is working for me
ben.nesheim mentioned jamie's rom, that is KWIQ ICS. I was running AOKP all through April and was liking the progress. I think after they added the HWA it got unstable for me on my phone so I ventured out and tried KWIQ. It just worked on my phone giving me everything I needed. I recently added the patch for the camera and now the only two things I am missing are front camera (would like to try Skype again) and 4g. I would be happy enough with this setup if this is all I ever got. I now have Chrome browser and all my apps I care about. I am one happy camper.
And Jamie has commented that he is making progress on an update to be coming out as soon as he feels it is stable.
AOKP here for a few days now. Everything works very well except Hulu and Netflix (haven't tried Youtube yet) and once in a while the camera app stops/freezes for a minute.
Everything else is butter.
In addition to the original question, do any of them have fully functioning camera (front and back) and camcorder?
I tried qwik ICS and it was stupid stable but didn't have working camera.
AoKP, run it on every device I have eexcept the photon cuz that POS is a pain to flash sh!t to so its stock rooted, but I have aokp on my Evo4g, kindle fire, Epic Touch 4g and my dads gNote

Camera ICS in the Market will give you rear cam up to 8MP and video. None of them have FFC yet
aokp35 has been working great with the ics camera and will try camcorder in a bit

Now that you have been reccomended every ICS rom for the evo. Lol.
My oppinion: Download teamdirt's cm9 and AOKP Milestone 5. (Milestone 5 can be found on the aokp website) Try out both roms, starting with AOKP.
Reason: I work using my phone for GPS and, on average, 15 calls and 25 texts a day. This means that if I flash a rom, it gets the full daily driver test.
That being said, AOKP was smooth, fast, battery efficient, and even easier to use And navigate. My only problem was random hot reboots.
Cm9 was somewhat choppy at times, but comparable to AOKP. NO REBOOTS!
Final verdict: Decks Reloaded. Lol. I couldn't decide so I went back to Gingerbread.

I know it is not differnet than the fxp builds but it is the official final version so it should be good. I am flashing it right know, when its finished i will share my experiene. Has anyone tried it yet?
Okay what i can say for know is that its awesome. Everything (not xperia play related) is working fine and even the performence seems to be a little better. Not as good as CM10 but better.
Just flashed it a while ago, and currently those games like Bruce Lee and Crash Bandicoot doesn't work. I think the kernel is the problem (maybe?). Currently, the kernel flashed here is the freexperia one.

No, it's the game not the kernel. There is a gamepad fix (that fxp nor cm ever put it) that fixes some games, but there will always be some games that will never work past stock (aosp based roms) and since devs have no access to that source they won't be fixed
Has CM9 reached the speed of CM7 yet? The last time I tried it was FXP128 and it's just SO SLOW in comparison to CM7. Opening apps happens lightning fast on cm7 and takes a fair while on CM9. Even thing like opening the recent apps popup takes far too long on CM9. Is any of this improved?

Well, it will never be as fast as gb because it's a huge ram hog, but it is in no way slow at all. cm10 is coming along nicely, so you could wait for that if you like

I too thought it was something to do with RAM but the avail. RAM reported in CM7 is around the same as CM9. CM9 said 353 and CM7 says 357.
I took this from "about phone" in the settings, I'm assuming that's available RAM AFTER system use so I don't think RAM is causing the speed issue.
I don't know, but I don't like the CM9. CM10 is much faster and has higher/smoother FPS.
For me:
CM7 vs CM9: CM7 win.
CM9 vs CM10: CM10 win.
CM7 vs CM10: CM7 win for Gaming, CM10 win for Appearance + Features.
Just sharing my thoughts

Nope. Work for me. I used stable and RC.
Bad, the WiFi issue pisses me off (few days of usage) then I get the WiFi loop, I avoid CM9 based roms now, I'm using CM10.

Cm7? Miui? wich version?

I also recomend you WIUI stable or the latest one. Is fast enough, much more than standard MIUI.
I think
hi,
i you are only crazy about games then go for CM7 and if you want a lot of customizations on your defy and go for MIUI 2.4.13/WIUI latest version for Defy.
Thanks
In my experience, MIUI Pikachu Edition was faster than WIUI GB.
Still, I think the fastest are CM7 KANG's by FuZZ But not a big difference between them and Pikachu.
Rom's For Defy
Im also having defy....
I have used many roms....
Deiffrent roms containt different variety or features.....
In my opinion....
Pikachu Rom - Fastest rom i have ever seen, it has aroma installer, v6 supercharger:victory:
(link) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498843
CM9 fast edition - based on ICS 4.04,much stable and fast....(note) - it is for red lens and defy plus only, because in green lense your camera will not work.....It also has Aroma installer......
(link) http://www.grupoandroid.com/topic/45682-ics-404-cm9-fast-edition-v50-new-age-1705/
CM 9 Moto Ice Gun - Stable and good....but not so much faster.....
(link) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781658
CM 10 - This rom contains Some awesome features.....its really good and my favorite.....But not stable yet......work in progress....There are 2 devs who are developing CM 10 bases rom Epsylon3 And Quarx.....since Epsylon is busy with Galaxy R, you should go for quarx build........
(link) http://www.longren.org/cyanogendefy/
Thank You.....
CM7 is only good for certain games, like Skies of Glory. It's not the fastest ROM.
MIUI and WIUI aren't fast in any way. I don't know what you're talking about.
CM9 is slow, but Moto Ice Gun and Defy+++ are all very fast. They are based off of Quarx's
CM9 builds and have V6 supercharger and kickass kernelizer. I have no idea if Bravia Engine is just
a placebo effect or not.
CM10 is fastest for games, but doesn't mean that all games are compatible with it. Regular performance
isn't that great.
Stock froyo and GB are good for games, surprisingly. try CEE Deblur 3.4.2-179 or 4.5.1-134 DFP 231
FuZZ's CM7 builds are indeed really fast. I'm impressed!
I have done a speed comparison of various ROMs for the Defy and posted in the German Android forums, you guys might be interested int that.

He use to do CM9 KANG's, but then stopped as Gingerbread was his choice and his priority and he couldn't keep up maintaining both CM7 and CM9 kangs for both DEFY and DEFY+... He might jump back to that, though... As you might have assumed already, his CM9 KANG's were the fastest CM9 builds at the time, yeah

It seems that you are only talking about gaming performance, so I don't get the point of your question.
Why I said that Pikachu MIUI was the fastest ever for me - no redraws of anything at anytime, instant start of any app, multitasking at its best (music playing in the background, playing a HD game, while switching to messaging and then back to the game without it reloading)... Stuff like that. I was really truly happy with my phone at that time, it looked awesome and worked great. Then ICS and JB showed up and now I just can't live without all those tiny new features :/ I miss Pikachu, nevertheless.
Thank you very much for the info!
The most stable rom and pretty fast out there is MS2Ginger 4.0
It even includes 720p video rec!
Suggesting a good rom for Defy
Most of the best roms have come out of either Epsylon3 or Quarx... so they are the best developers... Apart from their good roms..
If you want GB - WIUI GB (v2.5.27)is the best according to me, great looks, customization, smooth... (based on MIUI) by Wajk
if you want ICS - JIUI4 / WIUI 4 equally good for reasons same as above... by Janeindiran / Wajk... Also try Moto Ice Gun(stopped updates??) / Paranoid Android ICS... by Brajesh Sharma...
if you want JB - I would suggest Paranoid Android... the latest version i guess... I am on version 1.992 downloading the 2.0 version... pretty neat i must say.... by Brajesh Sharma...
Having said that, you will need to explore and find which one suits you the most...
fastest and best looking rom i have ever used on the defy is the white rabbit. based on cm7 kang but it has the go launcher installed by default so it looks very cool and there are loads of free themes available in the market so you can customise it so it is exactly how you want it. it also has a few nice extra apps installed that help with keeping the rom up to date. honestly i have been blown away and have had no force closes or issues. it is also very quick and everything just feels pretty damn snappy with most apps opening in a second or less.
i would avoid cm10. i tried it and is was a lag fest. dont get me wrong it looked great and for a port it is very impressive but it is slow with apps taking an age to open even after i had disabled virtually every app from the hwa settings. bottom line is the defy is old and the hardware was far from high end even when it was released so we cant expect miracles.
anyways that is my experience and others may have found cm10 to be perfectly useable. i didnt though and therefore cant recommend it. try the white rabbit... whats the worst that can happen... you dont like it and have to try something else... so what 5 minutes of your time maybe ten at a push.
Try Mokee last version
