This is what i found on google forums and thought I should share with every1
I hope it helps
IMPORTANT!!! The below set of steps worked fine for my device. My device specs: Google Nexus S (Not 4G), T-mobile, I9023, had ICS 4.0.3 and downgraded to 2.3.6
I'm pretty sure the downgrade process is similar with other devices (like Nexus S 4G) BUT with some differences, so I wouldn't attempt to downgrade.
The basic idea is that when downgrading, you have to use clockworkmod, because the stock recovery won't let you downgrade, works only when upgrading.
Before you begin, make sure you've backed up all of your data and stuff, because the process will wipe out all files from the internal and external storage.
So here we go:
1- get (google it) fastboot with the usb driver and clockworkmod recovery image (I used 5.0.2.0), get clockworkmod from here: http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img as for fastboot, Google it and you should find a zip file with + fastboot.exe + AdbWinApi.dll + AdbWinUsbApi.dll + usb_driver folder in which contains the usb driver (needed only on windows)
2- get the proper ROM image for your device here (I got the 2.3.6 for I9023): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664 Be careful to choose the right on for your device, and get the FULL not UPGRADE
So now you should have fastboot, clockworkmod recovery image, and the ROM image
3- Put in the same folder, anywhere on your disk, all the above files and folders. In addition, copy a cmd.exe or just open one and change the "working directory" (with cd command) to the folder in which you have placed the files. You should have the below: [Folder] usb_driver [File] fastboot.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
[File]
[File] AdbWinUsbApi.dll [File] recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img [File] the_ROM_image.zip ( I got 1ada25375426.signed-soju-ota-189904.1ada2537.zip, that's the 2.3.6)
4- [IMPORTANT] Before you turn off your device back up everything you need, because all file will be erased, even those on your internal device. After that turn off the device.
5- Hold volume up and power key to boot into bootloader
6- Connect your device via usb cable, windows should recognize the device, then install the driver.
7- Either open a command prompt and "cd" to the directory in which your files are located, or if you've copied a cmd.exe into your folder, then open it, either way you have to run it as an administrator just in case.
8- Now, having your driver installed and the device still connected, type in: fastboot devices that should give the serial number of your device
9- Then type in: fastboot oem unlock go to your device and select YES (with volume button) and confirm with power button. After confirmation, go to your PC, it should display sth like (I typed the time on random): ... OKAY [10.123 s] finished. Total time: 10.123 s
10- Next you need to flash the clockworkmod recovery image, type in: fastboot flash recovery <your_clockorkmod_image_file.img> mine was "recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img" so I typed: fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-crespo.img
11- Next, on your device's bootloader menu, navigate using the volume keys (up and down) and select Recovery and hit the power button to confirm. Now your device should boot into recovery (the clockworkmod recovery)
12- From the recovery menu select "mounts and storage" (again navigate with volume buttons and select with power button), then select "mount USB storage" and then go to your computer on which a removable disk should pop up
13- copy your ROM.zip file from you disk over to the removable disk storage, when finished go back to your device and hit "*****Go Back*****" and again "*****Go Back*****" and now you should be on clockworkmod recovery menu, from which, select the "install zip from sdcard", then select "choose zip from sdcard", and select the your ROM.zip file you've just copied over, then select "Yes - install your_ROM_file.zip mine was "Yes - Install 1ada25375426.signed-soju-ota-189904.1ada2537.zip" Now, wait until the installation is finished (it might take a couple of minutes) When finished hit "*****Go Back*****" and then "reboot system now" Now the device should reboot with your new android OS.
14- Now you need to lock the bootloader back on, so power off your device, press volume up and the power button to boot into bootloader, connect your device via usb, and in the same cmd type in: fastboot oem lock and you'll notice on your device is changed back to "Lock State - Locked". Reboot... And that is it. Now, if you prefer to do a factory reset you can do so from the settings menu or from bootloader, but is not necessary
the reason for your move is the battery life ?
I think this is a guide to roll back to Gingerbread on i9023 devices. You might want to put [GUIDE] or [HOWTO] on the title to avoid confusion

yeah the reason is surely the battery otherwise i love ICS but somehow neither does my Nexus S supports it (like as in the battery and not to mention the recent contacts bug) and neither does Google support it to be on Nexus S

might be its working fine for u....but i m facing alot of prbs in this regard and i guess alot of ppl here were posting regarding battery issues on ICS too
I just went back to gingerbread too and am going to stay with it until official ICS release. It is so much more snappy and responsive all around. Battery is good so far but it's my first drain down and I bet it gets better and better. Oxygen 2.3.2 is really nice with some extras but not too many, then with the kitchen I have it right where I need it until official ICS...

When I said GB was so much snappier a lot of people did not believe it See? LOL Me too I was surprised at how fast GB is... missing the ICS UI though heehehe
Can't you just flash a stock ROM and bingo!? Since you have CWM it'll basically be the same thing isn't it?

That's what I was thinking, unless you want stock gingerbread that can't except OTAs with CWM and a locked boot loader lol
And a lot of people are complaining about battery life in ICS 4.0.3. You could have tried a custom ROM based on 4.0.4, wayyy better.

So after rolling back to Gingerbread using the method described in this post one will not be able to perform OTA upgrade in the future?

ok, i was running 2.3.3 on my ns and finally got it unlocked then i decided to go for it and root it. my biggest mistake was not backing up anything after the unlock and then when i was rooting the phone it got stuck in the google screen
now i can get to the bootload screen but when i go to update from sd; it takes me there but i have nothing to back it up from
ive been trying to figure out a way to load a recovery backup to sd but the pc will not read the sd card anymore...
how can i fix this or am i stuck with an expensive paper weight?
please help
Question: Do you have clockworkmod on it?
(I figure you unocked and roote via adb/Fastboot - but if you can do it some other way and you did here they are]
Get ADB and Fastboot - figure out how the commands work (from Terminal/console/Command Prompt).
U need to put the files u want to flash (*.imgs in the same place as fastboot/ADB unless you're good a remembering your paths, if you have OS X simply drag and drop commands and files into terminal)
See if you can find a clockwork recovery image,
Download a stock rom - report back
Basically:
fastboot flash boot example.img
Fastboot flash recover example-recovery.img
that should work. I'll keep an eye on this thread.
After flashing CWR, go to mounts and storage and select mount USB storage, from there you can access your sdcard and copy files over.
The USB storage might take a minute or so to show up on your computer, if you're on windows go to my computer and click refresh until it shows up.

Here are the steps to get your phone back up and working:
1.Download this platform-tools.zip and extract it to your desktop
2.Connect your phone to the PC and enter bootloader mode
3.Press and hold Shift while right-clicking the folder you extracted 'platform-tools'
4.Click 'Open command window here' from the pop-up menu. cmd.exe window will open.
5.If the Bootloader is Unlocked continue to the next step. Type in the cmd.exe window 'Fastboot oem unlock' and follow the steps on the phone screen.
6.Type in the cmd.exe window 'fastboot boot cwr.img'.Your phone will restart and enter ClockWork recovery(CWR).
6.In CWR navigate with the volume keys and highlight 'mounts and storage' and select it by pressing the power button.
7.Then navigate down and select 'mount USB Storage'
8.On your PC, go to 'My computer' and press the refresh button until a 'removable disk' drive appears.
9.Double click on 'removable disk', You now have access to your SDcard on your phone!
10.Copy over a flashable .Zip Rom to the SDcard that you want to install on your phone, ie. Stock 2.3.4: Link(only for i9020T and i9023, dont install if you have i9020A), CM7: Link, etc.
11.Select 'unmount' in CWR when done copying files over. Then 'Go Back' to go to the CWR main menu.
12.Select 'wipe data/factory reset' in CWR and confirm with 'yes'
13.Select 'install zip from sdcard', then select 'choose zip from sdcard', then select the zip file you want to install and confirm.
14.Wait until the Rom installation is complete, then 'select reboot system now'.
15.Your phone will reboot and be up and running! Custom Roms tend to take longer to boot so be patient.
Let me know what happens.

yes, i can access clockwork mod also, but it the usb storage wont show up.....
Follow these instructions:
1. Slap self in head.
2. Power on phone while holding volume up&power button.
3. Now on the pc, Get the fastboot folder to the root of hard drive, I.E. C:\fastboot\. Also add to this folder your *.img files (radio, recovery, boot, system, data, etc.)
4. Open start menu.
5. In search box type cmd and press enter.
6. Now command window is open, type in that
cd C:\fastboot
fastboot flash * *.img
Replace the * with appropriate .imgs.
recovery, system, data, boot, radio.
Example
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
7. Now that that is finished type
fastboot -w
fastboot reboot
8. Now the phone will reboot. BE PATIENT AS THIS MAY TAKE UP TO TEN MINUTES TO FULLY REBOOT INTO ANDROID!!! Disturbing it in anyway can cause corruption. I had this happen to my phone before. Literally walk away and come back in ten. Don't touch it, don't breath on it nothing. If you have any further problems either post here or PM me. Getting the .img files and fastboot is up to you. By the previous replies you should have them already.

I think I had the same problem. first you need to check if your pc has the correct driver to accept the nexus s in bootloader mode. when that is done and you have colckword mod , you can but a custom rom on the sd card and flash that, then you'll be able to use your phone again.
Finally S-Off. Thanks to alpharev (generous donation on its way)
Now first problem;
I am the least tech savvy guy on the planet. If not, around London
As you see, the problem is me. So I need a genuine idiot proof step by step guide.
Can someone recap everything in a simple way please?
Backup, root, overclock etc...
Anyone who helps will receive a guaranteed prayer from a religion of their choice
download eclair rom from shipped roms, install it, then download unrevoked, root with it and youll get custom recovery also with unrevoked, after that follow some other guides how to properly flash a custom rom thru that recovery.
(before the rooting part, install htc sync to get all the needed drivers. WARNING: before using unrevoked to root the device, uninstall just htc sync but everything else that was installed with it - leave it installed. btw im atheist )

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130044
Link above supposed to do the job.
-After rooting the phone I need to "nandroid" backup my phone. Nandroid will appear in the boot menu when I root my phone right? wrong?
i didnt do any backups xD, i just soffed, installed 2.1 wwe ruu, rooted with unrevoked and flashed cm7

The phone is not rooted. ROMs are rooted. You can very well follow that guide, but, I used Fastboot to install ClockWorkMod Recovery (Which is having all those options you are listing - ie Nandroid, Install ZIP From SDCard etc).
The Fastboot method needs just one command to install Clockworkmod Recovery, but needs to have Android SDK installed. If you are willing to do that:
- Download Android SDK - http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
- Download ClockworkMod Recovery - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1014498
- Extract the Recovery.img file from the 2nd link, and place it in your SDK Setup Path / Tools (eg: C:/android-sdk-windows/tools)
- Open a Command Window (cmd)
- Browse to the tools folder in this Command Window
- Type the command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
- It will install ClockworkMod Recovery, you are done.
Then, simply follow Part 3 of this guide to install Custom ROMs and Stuff:

long winded way of doing it
we need a step by step with pics or at least a video on youtube, theres nothing there at teh moment.
Once you have S-OFF follow these steps:
1. Get fastboot.exe, CWM and the su binary from the attachment below, make sure you extract the archives.
2. Download Android SDK from here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
2. Install SDK to C:/, place fastboot.exe and the recovery.img in android-sdk/platform-tools
3. Shut down phone, get into bootloader (volume down + power button)
4. Select FASTBOOT using volume keys, press power button (you are now in fastboot mode)
5. Connect phone to computer, select disk drive.
6. Open cmd, type cd C:/android-sdk/platform-tools
7. now type "fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-4.0.0.2-j_r0dd_mod-buzz.img" (no quotes)
8. Now you should have Clockworkmod installed, but still no root so:
9. Copy su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed to sdcard.
10. Get into bootloader again, select recovery.
11. Select "install zip from sdcard", confirm with trackball.
12. Scroll down to su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed, confirm the install, now you are rooted!
13. Do a nandroid backup from clockworkmod.
14. Repeat steps 9-12 but use the ZIP of ROMs, Kernels or Radio if you wish. Wipe all data before installing a fresh rom (ty calyxim ^^)

Thanks mate. Worked wonders. In what religion would you like your prayers?
I would like to make an addition to step 14; Wipe all data before installing a fresh rom

Okay, it took me some trying and stuff but I finaly found a way!
Okay, this is going to be simple step-by-step
FirsT: Copy this to the root of your SD card: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=548407&d=1300751790
Second: Go into HBOOT and click yes when it asks you to update (note: Please make sure your SD card is FAT32 and not FAT, it must be FAT32 for this step to work.
Third: Remove the img file from your sd card and add this file: http://bit.ly/su2361ef
Fourth: Go into HBOOT and click Recovery!
Fifth: Click install zip from sdcard (or some thing like that)
Sixth: Click choose zip from sdcard
Seventh Locate your zip and let it update
AND YOU'RE DONE!
Have fun being free!
If you're having problems with the HBOOT not detecting the .zip update, please check if you SD card is FAT32.

That wait is normal if it below 2-3 min. But if it takes longer u should check the drivers.
That wait generally occurs if u connect the device after entering the command (happens to me everytime). If it is so, shouldn't disconnect the device and wait for a while till it detects.
If it is not so and wait is longer, then go for reinstalling the drivers.

This occurs when pressing vol down + power on a full booted phone.
U should not do this. Switch off the device and then hold vol down + power. There goes into hboot mode. And for that recovery installation u should go into fastboot mode though from there.
as it was now clear, the waiting shouldn't be there now. Enter fastboot mode and try it

Note: please read this procedure carefully more than once until you are fully aware of it. If you have any doubts or concerns, just ask to avoid confusion before you apply. This should be followed step by step.
• Your custom ROM will be: http://goo.im/devs/teameos/roms/nightlies/wingray/
• Your GOOGLE APPs (GAPPs) would be: gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip http://goo.im/gapps
Full thread in details can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20479464
To summarize:
First, download the above ROM and GAPPs and put them onto your xoom internal and external SD card. Put them under /mnt/sdcard for internal sd, and under the root of your external sd card.
To download:
• Get the Motorola USB drivers to your laptop: http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/
• Get the Android SDK to your laptop: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html • Recovery Image: http://goo.im/devs/teameos/recoverie...ecovery-r6.img
• GAPPS: http://goo.im/gapps, your GAPPs would be: gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
• ROM: http://goo.im/devs/teameos/roms/nightlies/wingray/
Steps:
1. Power off your XOOM device.
2. Press and hold the volume down button while pressing the power button at the same time. Note: Even if your xoom starts again, just keep the button pressed until you see "Starting fastboot protocol" on the screen.
3. Connect Xoom to your computer via USB.
4. Open a ‘Command Prompt’ or ‘Terminal’ window on your computer in your sdk/tools folder. This is the sdk you downloaded above.
5. unlock your xoom and flash the recovery image. The recovery image should be in your current working directory where you have command line navigated to:
Type:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash recovery eos-recovery-r6.img
fastboot reboot
adb reboot recovery
Now, you have your device unlocked and recovery installed.
Reboot your xoom by selecting the option "reboot system now" from recovery. you can navigate up and down using the volume buttons. Once an option is highlighted, press the power button to select, you will still have your old ROM.
To flash the other ROM downloaded above,
1. Boot into recovery by:
i. As soon as you hit the reboot command above, you should see a Motorola logo appear. Wait 3 seconds and tap the Volume down button and the words Android Recovery should appear on the screen. When you see that, tap the Volume up button and you’ll boot into recovery.
2. From within Recovery, perform wipe data, wipe cache, and go to advanced, wipe dalvik cache and battery stats. Don't worry, if the ROM and GAPPs are deleted, which should not be the case, you will have them on your external sd card
Note: wipe data will delete your stuff on the xoom. It would be great if you backup your files that you need to your external sd card before you start any of this procedure.
3. In recovery, navigate to install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sd card and select the EOS ROM you copied to the root of the SD card. Once the files are flashed, DO NOT reboot afterwards. Hold on.
4. Again, from Recovery, choose install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sd card and select the GAPPs you copied to the root of the SD card.
Then hit reboot system now. It will take 2 - 3 minutes for the first reboot. Setup your google account. and you are good to go.
Later reboots will be much faster (around 40 - 50 seconds).
Advice: purchase Startup Manager from the market. Remove unwanted user programs from the startup. That will boost the boot time of your xoom. and don't remove superuser or superSU.
To have better battery life, from the market buy JuiceDefender ultimate. configure it as aggressive. don't worry, it is ok. This will give you around 2 hours of extra battery life than the promised 10 hours. Keep that in the startup.
You may need after that to install terminal emulator from the market if not already installed by the ROM to check if you have root permissions. Just type "su -" you will be prompted with superuser check. Click allow. and then type "id" You will see your id is root.
Should you require further details or assistance, please let me know. And enjoy the best rom customized ever for your device
Best Thanks to TEAM EOS for the great ROMs they provide.
After you are done with all that, let me know and will explain to you how to work with the pre-installed gooManager in the new ROM. It will make your life much easier to upgrade to future releases of your ROM.
Note: if you are coming from eos rom, there is no need to wipe data. Wipe cache and dalvik are enough.
If you are coming from another rom other than eos roms, or rooting for the first time, wipe data is needed as well. Enjoy...

Great guide! I was waiting for someone (I was too lazy myself) to create a guide that skipped right to the good stuff: Custom Roms.
One thing though: After "fastboot flash recovery eos-recovery-r6.img" aren't you supposed to reboot, and then immediately go into recovery, just so that the system doesn't bring back the old one? Or am a dreaming things (again)?
Hi yosterwp. My pleasure to be part of xda community mate.
Well, after flashing recovery, within adb, I am asking to reboot fastboot and and rebooting recovery. Then rebooting system is mentioned there. That is why I am asking to use the volume button and power button combinations to prevent it from going to old rom and directly go to recovery to flash eos rom

Ahh, efficient and direct for the noob in all of us! I expected nothing less from you; great job!
At step 1 of "To flash the other ROM downloaded above", I get this:
http://i.imgur.com/lsItx.jpg
What am I doing wrong?
EDIT: If it helps, when I flash the recovery image, I get this:
http://i.imgur.com/BdZRM.jpg
Is that right?
Also, when I try to enter recovery, I get this:
http://i.imgur.com/pWUZS.jpg
(and before I get that I get the same Android outline with 2 spinning cogs inside, then it changes to that)
I don't actually get into recovery (first image I posted) until I press the Vol Up and power buttons at the same time.
EDIT 2: Disregard all that!
I got it all working using this, and XxLordxX's Lord AIO Tool.
Installed the ROM and GAPPS from this though.
ICS looks so damn nice on this I LOVE ANDROID!
Hey. I am happy you got all that working
For the previous images you posted, it seems boatloader was not unlocked and that is a pre-requisite for Recovery installation.
Now that it is working, Enjoyyyyyyy ICS

Hmm. I ran through the bootloader unlocking on the device, changing the option with the arrow keys then it said
"Formatting UDA" then said it was finished..
Anyway, it's working now, and CWM works (obviously, as I now have the custom ROM installed).

Spanish Xoom?
Hi.
I have an Spanish Xoom Wifi, and I'm concerned about if this ROM (wingray):
- will work in my european/spanish XOOM?
- will allow me to change language and keyboard layout to Spanish?
- can this "english" ROM "brick" my device ? (I don't know if flashing an US or NON-Spanish rom in my Spanish device can brick it).
Thanks.

Device Not found
I've installed the SDK and Motorola USB drivers as instructed.
When I attach the Xoom, I hear the device connect chime. I even saw the fastboot driver message say "complete" with the happy green checkmark.
However, when I run:
adb reboot bootloader
I get error: device not found.
I tried the LIAOT tool and it also hangs up looking for the device.
Thx for any advice.

rooted, flashed
Hi everyone.
I would like to thank you for all the developers here, for the information on how to do it. Without you guys I would stuck with stock honeycombe 3.2 here in the UK. I have been waiting for an official update OTA ics 4.0 for months, but still no sign if other Xoom users will ever get it.
Did it first time rooted, flashed, now running team eos wingray 4.0.4 ics, on my xoom mz604, what a huge improvement.
Thank you again for all of you!
We are here one community to help out. By the way jellybean is out for your device if you are interested.

Ive checked other nexus 7 threads... but this isn't the case.
My nexus 7 is stuck on the google Boot I cannot rub Fastboot or recovery from the toolkit .. nothing at all. It cant find the device .
When I plug in the usb it still makes the sound on windows and so on.
It happened when I was prepairing to install a Custom ROM using JROMFlasher..
I followed all the steps, and when it came to install the ROM to the SD card it just rebooted (transferred to quickly I thought)
And then Ever since it has Just been stuck on the google screen.
I am quite pissed :L
Any Ideas?
I would be quite pissed at your self for using a toolkit. this is a Nexus device and is easily unlocked manually with the proper tools that google provides themselves. Boot into fastboot mode (Hold Power and the two volume keys). Once in fastboot mode you can flash a recovery and then once in recovery you can adb push a ROM to the tablet and flash the ROM the correct way. You really should read up on how to do thing manually instead of resorting to the quick and easy method.
Download the zip located here : platform-tools.zip Extract the contents to a folder name the folder Nexus7 or whatever you want.
Once thats done go ahead and open a command prompt window in that folder you can do that by Shift+Right clicking inside the folder and selecting "Open Command Prompt Here" or if on XP then open CMD and
Code:
cd C:\Users\Name-of-User\Desktop\Nexus7
Once in the CMD issue the command
Code:
fastboot devices
To see if the computer recognizes the device in fastboot mode. It should spit out a gibberish looking code with ....... Device at the end.
Then you going to flash the recovery to do that you issue this command
Code:
fastboot flash recovery name-of-recovery.img
inside the zip the openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0.img that is what you will put in place of "name-of-recovery.img" it will show on the screen writing recovery when its done hit the volume up button until the "START" Turn to "Recovery Mode." Then hit the power button you will boot into recovery mode. Once in recovery mode place the ROM.zip you want to flash in the same folder as the stuff you extracted to.
Then issue this command
Code:
adb push Name-of-ROM.zip /data/media
Of course you will replace name-of-ROM.zip with the actual name of the ROM you are flashing. Make sure you also have a gapps packaged which can be found on goo.im/gapps/ latest package is gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip you will want to adb push that as well.
IF all is done correctly you should be able to install that ROM please follow this procedure.
1. Go to Wipe
2. Factory Reset (this will delete all your apps and apps data not the sd card)
3.Wipe Cache Partition
4. Wipe Dalvik Cache
5. Format System
6. Go to install and find the two ROM.zip and Gapps package at the bottom of the root of the sd card (/sdcard0)
7. Select to flash the ROM and then the Gapps
8. Reboot

It was formatted anyway there was no Important data .. Actually you maybe able to answer something for me.
When I rooted my Nexus before all this.. It was rooted as I done previous tests.
What do you use to move files to and from the tablet such as root files? As I want to modify the "X" boot logo animation. I noticed it is just a bunch of PNG images that need replacing..

Acutally its a zip of multiple components not just png's. The bootaniamtion.zip as a whole is what makes up that boot up animation. If you want to change the bootanimation you would replace that entire zip with one that you want. And then set the permissions and reboot. Some will even have a flashable. In order to modify system files you need root and a root explorer. There are multiple on the play store i would recommend Root Explorer if you have the money otherwise ES File Manager or Solid Explorer.
Bricked after wiping with twc
When I look for fastboot devices, nothing happens...
where do I go from here?

Recently I posted about Sony/Verizon finally allowing meid unlock of the r800x.
I thought I'd come back and write up a little guide to help those of you that are wanting to upgrade your Verizon r800x device to a fresh install of CM9.
Things You'll Need
Unlocked Bootloader
Xperia Fastboot Drivers
Android SDK
Cyanogenmod 9 (I used the 2012-11-25 nightly)
Flash Tool (Links are under installation)
Verizon's 2.3.4 TFT
Gapps for CM9
Keiran & Atarii's CDMA Fix (There are some touchpad fixes out there too but I'm not covering those as I chose not to use them)
Recovery Play
Setup Stage
Download everything listed above.
Install Flash Tool and copy Verizon's 2.3.4 TFT into Flash Tool's firmware folder
You'll want to get Android SDK installed.
In the SDK manager, you want to be sure to have platform tools and Google USB driver checked and installed.
Unlock your bootloader following the steps on Sonys Unlock Bootloader webpage. Congrats your bootloader is now unlocked.
Start your phone and connect your usb connect your SD card to the PC.
Make a folder to store your rom setup files and copy the Cyanogenmod 9 Zip, Gapps, and Keiran & Atariis CDMA Fix Zip to that folder. Unmount USB Storage.
Back up your app data using Titanium Backup or some other tool to your SD card.
Navigate to the install path of your Android SDK and locate the platform-tools folder.
Open up the CM9 Zip file and extract boot.img to the platform-tools folder.
Also copy the recoveryPLAY.img to the platform-tools folder.
Run the command prompt and navigate to your platform-tools folder. Keep the command prompt open throughout this whole guide.
Code:
cd c:\program files\android\android-sdk\platform-tools
for example
Disconnect your USB cord from the phone and shut the phone off. Hold the search button and plug the USB cord back in.
You should see a blue light. If windows can't find the drivers for your fastboot, point it to the platform-tools folder.
Run the following code and when that is complete run the 2nd command:
Code:
fastboot boot recoveryPLAY.img
fastboot reboot
Unplug your usb and press the back/return button on your phone until you see ClockworkMod show.
Navigate to backup/restore and choose to backup your phone (home is up, list is down, search is enter). We are doing this incase something goes wrong with with your Cyanogen install, in which case you will simply restore your phone.
Poweroff the phone.
Start Flash Tool, press the lightning icon and select flash mode. Select Verizon's 2.3.4 TFT and click next.
Hold the back button on your phone, insert the USB cord, and press the power button to start flash mode when flash tool asks you to.
Boot your phone and activate your service using verizons *228 program. After the phone reboots, turn it off.
Back at your command prompt, run the following codes and then immediately unplug the USB cord.
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot
Your phone should start and you should see a FXP boot screen, start pressing the volume down button to enter into recovery.
Navigate through clockworkmod using your vol up/down keys and choose the install zip from SD option (home is enter).
Select choose zip from SD card and navigate to your CM9 zip you copied to your SD card earlier. Select yes.
After install completes, repeat the step above but this time choose your Gapps Zip file.
Lastly repeat the step again and this time choose Keiran & Atariis CDMA Fix Zip.
Reboot your phone and hopefully if everything went well, your phone will start up into the OS after a minute or two.
Go through the setup that pops up (you shouldnt need to activate your service, you did that previously in the fresh 2.3.4 install).
Lastly open up voice dialer and say Open APN and it should come up with an option to Open APNs. Select it.
That should bring you to a screen and there should be an option for Verizon Wireless, select that and return to your home screen. You're done.
If for whatever reason you encounter problems. Boot into recovery and restore your 2.3.4 backup.
I am not responsible for any botched upgrade attempts. You assume the risk when you unlock your bootloader and all modding attempts made on it.
This guide was writen as a suggested route one can take for upgrading your phone and any problems encountered along the way were not my doing.
Search the Xperia Play Forums if you encounter any weird problems.
This is a great guide! Good luck CDMA users! First

What I meant was, skip the recovery part, and don't flash the kernel that comes with CM9. Get LuPuS CM9 kernel. Has it's own built in CWM (6.0) and it's great. Tons of useful features.
Thanks For The Guide it helped alot!
Help. Bootlooping?
Thanks for writing this guide. I"ve read that the initial boot in to CM9 takes forever, but how do I decide if I've waited too long and I'm bootlooping? Also, all of the procedures I've read talk about fixing a boot loop by returning to the stock firmware. I want CM9 and don't want to return to stock.

Also, all of the procedures I've read talk about fixing a boot loop by returning to the stock firmware. I want CM9 and don't want to return to stock.

I fixed it: I booted in to Recovery mode by holding the volume down button and then I used it to wipe user data. Then rebooted and booted in to CM9 in less than 2 minutes.
Is there any way to do this with out activating your phone? I have a Galaxy Nexus and don't wan to deactivate it just to flash a rom.

Um i'd assume so. But this is for the xperia play, not galaxy nexus. Try checking Galaxy Nexus Forums

Yeah i actually had this happen to me a few times on other roms. It usually boils down to wiping cache/dalvik after the install, and sometimes user data.
No worries, found what I needed.
Nice guide, but going from GB to ICS on XP is more of a downgrade...
Sent from my R800x using xda app-developers app
so the Verizon's 2.3.4 TFT both links wont work what can i do ?

Sorry, I didn't explain my self right. Since the phone I'm currently using right now is Galaxy Nexus and is activated and my Xperia Play is not in service, is there another way to flash CM9 without having to activate your Xperia Play? (Step 21)
When i do the fastboot flash boot boot.img it says everything did well but my phone wont boot. I dont know what im doing wrong...
The Verizon's 2.3.4 TFT file seems to be down.
the links for verizons android 2.3.4 no longer contain the file. can anybody point me to the right direction where i can obtain the file.
Problem with step 19
Hi guys
flashtool is not recognizing the Verizon's 2.3.4 TFT file. i copied and pasted the file in the firmware of the flash tool but its not showing up in the firmware section. I notices that the file extenetion is .ftf inseted of .tft i changed the extention to .tft but it still didnt show up.
I don't know what tft is (it's FTF) but I have the 2.3.3 (.88) and the 2.3.4 (.57) both on my dropbox account. Just click my link and foloow it to the correct folder and file. Enjoy.
