I converted the pre-loaded games on the Play (Asphalt, Bruce Lee, Star Battalion, Tetris, Crash, and Madden) from system apk's to user apk's, and then I could move them to the sd card instead of keeping them in internal memory. it freed up a lot of space and I was glad of it. However, after rebooting the phone, the games read as simply not being installed, and the only way I can get them back is from restoring the backups and keeping them as system apk's. Any thoughts on why this is? Anyhow, it freed up a great amount of space in the internal memory and thought I'd share. I actually didn't know Titanium Backup could convert system to user apk until I stumbled on the ability by accident.
Convert them to user apps, back-up the user-app version, restart, restore the user-app backup. Don't know why it removes them upon reboot, but doing this will fix it
Is there any benefit to doing this versus the setInstallLocation trick to get them on the sd card?

The point is that they're already installed to /system/app/, so no that won't do anything for pre-loaded games

I appreciate the tip. Worked like a charm.
I tried this with two apps and I let Titanium Back Run for over an hour. This last time I actually updated the app just to see what what happen. The same thing happened that did when I just rebooted: the app I was trying to "convert" get's deleted.
1. Can anyone help me with this?
2. Does anyone have the Asphalt 5 apk backed up for the Play?
Thanks in advance!!

I would like to report that I had to use the SD Maid to clear away the rest of Asphalt 5 that was left lingering and now I do have about 20mb more free!!! Also thanks Spectre51!!!
Now I did try this with Google Maps and I had the same problem. When I went to re-install it from the Market it was giving me some issues with not being able to save it to the default location. So after undoing the ADB scrip thing for forcing apps to install to the SD card it installed. So later on just for ****s and giggles I thought I would try and move it to the SD card with Titanium backup. Somehow it worked and even the app still works!!! Amazing!!!
Now I did try this with Flash AND I had to move it back to the phone so that Dolphin could access it. i find this one more perplexing because on my rooted Droid 1 and never had this problem. On another note, the Flash app is now small than it used to be??
Changing system apps to user apps, deletes system apps
I have the same problem of changing system apps to user apps, titbkup says it's processing the app, but doesn't. Eventually I have to reboot(after, at least one time waiting over an hour for it to do that!). Big, or small system app, it doesn't make any difference. Changing user apps to system apps, it runs fine. The backup of the system app, upon restore, is still a system app, or doesn't restore. Titbkup
ran fine, and did the converting fine, when I first installed it(with the PRO key) about 7 months ago, now it's hanging whenever I try to change system to user apps! It's has done this since at least the last 7 updates.
Man just use your root explorer, move the .apk from system/app to your memory card, once you've done that, restart your phone and install it from memory card? Its as easy as that... Lemme post a a screenshot of my Sims, Crash, and Bruce Lee...

I have this same problem. Some apps worked fine, most caused this.
Yeah, i always use TB as well, it's great app..

You guys have to realize that some system apps need to be system apps to work. If it hangs for that long, it's simply because it can't be run as a user app

So, yes I searched around, and got close answers, but nothing that answers my ?'s exactly. About to root for 1st time, and then install CM, but before I start to mess with my phone at all, I want to back it up COMPLETELY...i.e. contacts, apps, app settings, dxtop homescreen shortcuts + colors, etc. etc. etc. And then, if I mess up root, how do I start over and re-install everything?
Also, once I root, will everything will be gone from my phone? I saw a thread @ androidcommunities saying yes, but is there anyway to "backup" the apps on my SD? Then copy the files SD -> computer? I don't want to install each app 1 by 1 again...And through my searchings, I'm afraid you're going to say "I have to", and if that's the case, and use apps2sd, will I EVER have to download apps 1 by 1 again?

Even if you backup your apps, you'll still have to reinstall them one by one from your backup. The Market has apps that can help backup your apps to apk formats. MyBackup Pro will backup app settings and shortcuts afaik, but it isn't free. Why worry about backing up contacts, they're sync'd with your gmail account.
thanks! do you recall what app backs my apps into an apk? and then what do i do from there?

How the hell do you fit 100 apps in an unrooted G1? Mine was full at the high 30's.
You can use AppManager.
I have AppManager, looking at AppManager Pro with batch install. However, last time my phone pooped on me (when updating to 1.5 with Dark Keys installed), I had to hard reset. App Manager installed all my apps. However, I had to go back and do it again 1 by 1 because the Market didn't recognize that my apps were installed when I re-installed through AppManager.
Is this problem fixed? Or is there a fix to this?
P.S. 113 apps (including default ones) installed

You can't get around that, Market only shows INSTALLED if installed through Market. Doesn't mean you can't use the app. If you need to keep up with updates, use aTrackdog with AppManager.
Arg, lame! But thanks for your prompt replies (I'm about to root right now)...
I guess my last question is, once I root and can install Nandroid, or Backup for Root, will I have to install 1 by 1 ever again, to make Market recognize apps? Or do these root programs backup the phone to be EXACTLY as it was when backup was made?

Market won't recognize installed apps unless install by Market, PERIOD. Nandroid backs up exactly the state of the phone, while Backup for Root can do individual things like SMS, Shortcuts, Data of apps, etc.
Backup for Root does have a check mark for "Market db", but I've never found it to work.
So, the bottom line, is that most rooted users don't use the market to update apps? They use AppManager/aTrackdog, because every time they restore, it would uninstall apps and market wouldn't recognize?
Use My backup Pro to back up your apps. After you root install adb on your computer, go to the application and games section and look for a thread XDA app pack 1.4 to batch install your apps. Use aTrackDog to keep up w/ updates. The market will no longer show them when you install off market. It will show them again after you update your apps (not all just the ones you update).
EDIT: copy app file from SD card (MyBackupPro) into XDA app pack folder to batch install

Yes, but if you use adb you can back up and restore your private apps No app on the market can do that.
Only in a very limited sense, since I just restored 1 app, but it was my first use of restoring. The game Diversion had a market update which basically made it force close at launch. So I restored the apk and data, all is good, the Market link and everything is back and it works again. If you have the game, don't update (yet anyway). Oh, and I uninstalled it first. I don't know if that makes a difference. Wonder how well it would do for all apps and other things, but I won't find out until I need Odin for Gingerbread I guess.
ETA: and apparently the restored app ends up on the internal memory even if it was on the SD before, so keep that in mind...may be prudent to do a 1 at a time procedure.

It does work well, but I prefer Titanium because it pushes apps to sd if you had that before and also clockwork mod has a backup thing that backsup everything and if you go to advanced restore and restore data, every single app is exactly like it was before

Nandroid backups do sound good. I plan on doing some before any updates just to be safe. OTOH I keep reading about how restores from it can bork installations, but I guess that's a danger with anything to some degree.
I like the UI of My backup but it did fudge up a backup of home battle 3D on me acouple of times and I had to stop using it
Quick Tip for using Titanium Backup
1. Backup "application widgets". Once you restore your launcher, restore this and reboot so that your widgets will work and you don't have to reconfigure your home screen widgets (which would say "problem loading widgets" otherwise).
2. Backup "accounts" to remember the fact that you have "allowed" access to your google account for various apps (mainly google apps and any app that accesses your google account). This is also required to remember your facebook and skype passwords.
3. Backup "LogProvider" for the call log. A lot of people think call logs are backed up by "contacts storage" but they're not.
4. "contact storage" backups your speed dial
5. "dialer storage" backups your SMS/MMS. After you restore you need to reboot for it to take effect.
6. No need to backup "calendar 1.0". Just calendar 1.1. (this backups the setting not the actual content provided that you sync with google)
7. Most settings in Setting cannot be backed up (ie. Voip account, wifi hotspot ssid, ringtones, volume, etc). Simply re-enter them.
8. After upgrading your rom version or migrating to a different rom, before you restore, for "system" apps, make sure you check each one to see if the version has changed. If so, don't restore or you will probably have force-closes down the road. This is especially true if you move to cyanogen or miui, don't restore system apps at all.
9. Generally you don't need to save system apks unless you plan on uninstalling them to experiment instead of freezing.
10. Don't backup/restore "market" settings or you'll lose market links to your apps. In fact after you restore all your user apps you won't see all of them linked in the market even if titanium backup is set up to remember the links. Just use titanium to clear the market user data, restart market and you're ready to go.
11. Titanium backup does not save your default programs. (ie. DEFAULT browser, dialer, and for different file types).
12. Let TB save the settings to sd card. The next time you install TB you won't need to install the "pro" app. It remembers.
13. TB does not remember what apps are frozen. So after a reinstall, you need to refreeze whatever apps you want to freeze.
Other things good to know:
If you migrate to a new rom, although titanium Pro has an option to attempt to restore system apps to be compatible, try only restore user apps just to avoid force closes.
If you have a fixed set of apps you know you want to freeze, create a filter containing these apps. If you install a new rom, you can freeze all of them all at once without having to go through each.
Can you expand on what you mean in point 1.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Scenario:
I have, say, go launcher or touch wiz as my launcher, I put widgets on my home screen like weather, google search bar and maybe a music player widget. I can use TB to backup my launcher, which would supposedly backup where these widgets are located on your home screen. However after reinstalling the rom, if I restore my launcher without restoring "application widgets", the place where these widgets are supposed to be will show "problem loading widgets". And you would have to remove these problematic widgets and recreate them.
So when you backup your launcher, backup "application widgets" as well. When you restore, restore both of them. And preferably after restoring, reboot before you go back to your launcher
By the way "application widgets" is an actual backupable item in TB (shown in green)
Is this making any sense?
Thanks and yes you are making perfect sense.
Many times I've had to delete then replace widgets from my launcher after restoring using TB so I'm interested in where in TB to find this option.
I'm probably looking right at it but just can't see it. Can you steer my in the right direction in TB?

Nice to learn new things, especially the widgets, hate having the "problem loading widget" all the time.
Thanks for highlighting these.
Ok found it.
It's an item in the app list called "application widgets" with the TB icon next to it.
Cool thanks never noticed it before.
Great tip.

Ok... Don't know WTF... but its working like lightning now... have no idea... didn't do anything except download google text to voice... weird
Been using it for years and didn't figure out the speeddial backup. Good post. A couple thoughts in general as far as backup strategy.... IMO freezing is better than removing system apps because space is not an issue with the sgs2 like it is with some (older) phones. Swap a lot of roms and sooner or later your are going to either on accident or purpose delete something you shouldn't have and then have to restore. Going down the list and freezing them only takes a minute and is readily reversible with the same end result. If you must be rid of them freeze them first and give it a few days for any oddness to show up. Then uninstall.
Agree on restoring system apps. Always a good way to get odd behavior or fc's and the like. Normally there is no need anyways as the new rom has the same system apps in it and most of the settings can be remembered elsewhere. I do back up system apps though in case I want to grab an apk that isn't in the new rom.
Also IMO its a good idea to copy the entire contents of the internal sd over to the pc after doing a nandroid and ti backup. This way if things go to hell you have everything. The process I use is to do a ti backup and then nandroid in recovery. I mount while still in recovery and copy everything over to a folder on the pc. Now I have all my pics, everything. I use the external sd for music and other items that I know will move from rom to rom so that I don't have to hassle with them. Do this and your covered in every way if you have problems with your ti backup or nandroid. Both can happen sometimes. Also if your phone dies, goes missing etc at least you have a backup as recent as your last rom swap which for us is probably not too long ago. lol I keep the most recent two backups and delete the oldest as I make new ones with each new rom. This only takes a few minutes extra during the rom swap and if you need it you will be glad you have it.
Thank you for tips!
Very helpful. Been using TB for a while now but did not know all the details!
thanx for your efforts...
got some useful tips. I thought I know TB, but I didn't.
Nice write-up!
Any advice on what to do when you try to restore an app and it tells you "problem parsing the package"?
Seam to happen more often with apps that did not come from Android Market or Amazon Appstore...
Very good guide and not just for newbie's.
Thank you.
App Folders i nApp Draw
i cant seem to figure out where the folders in the app draw are actually stored. i tried to do a restore from a previous rom (apps only, widgets ect) but im not sure where to go for app folders, thats if it will even do this for me.
Many Thanks...
...to the OP & others for this thread & the tips in it ;-)
Just rooted yesterday & ran TI backup. Have run it again incorporating the tips in this thread. Very good suggestion to copy the lot over to PC as well.
Also, people should remember to make a copy of their EFS file & keep that somewhere safe off the phone (keep a copy on your external SD card as well).
Everything I've read so far suggests you're royally boned if you trash your EFS, so making a couple of copies & keeping them in various spots (one on the external SD/one on PC) makes sense to me. Hellcat's kTool does a bangup job & is a nice little app to have handy ;-)
Hi everyone. If someone can give me the confirmation about the following:
1. is Titanium backup saving the settings for the backed up app or only the app itself?
2. are social hub, readers hub, game hub, talk, IM, safe to freeze or unistall cos I don't use that?
3. When you freeze the app, is the icon gone or it stays under "menu"?
4. is Email app safe to freeze/uninstall or I need that for using Gmail app?
I'm on stock 2.3.3 + CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KH1-v4.1-CWM4 for now.
thank you and regards.
Thanks - very helpful to have more information.
3. Backup "LogProvider" for the call log. A lot of people think call logs are backed up by "contacts storage" but they're not.
This was really helpful. Thank you.

Hi all- I have a 16gb GT10.1 and, while 16gb of storage was more than I could have dreamt of having in my first computer, it's not a lot once you've had your tablet for a few months. 100 apps + copilot GPS maps (deleted all but NA) + a gig of music, and I end up so low on space I can't do a new backup. I don't keep any videos on the tab, but it's fine with me because streaming works great on the GT10.1 (allshare, netflix, grooveshark, and google music beta FTW!). With only one nandroid backup and one Titanium backup I still find that I usually don't have more than 1-3 gigs of space left, and it often drops to less than one gig, especially if I forget to delete my old nandroid backup. Using the "clear data" function when installing a new ROM through CWM doesn't affect your SD card.
So I decided that it was time to figure out what was hogging my SDcard. I found a few files and directories that can be deleted without ill effect (at least as far as I can tell, I backed them up on my laptop just in case). So far I haven't deleted anything I use and I'm up to about 5 gigs free.
I'll post what I've found here, but I'm sure there's more. If you know of other directories, files, or apps that take up significant space and can be safely deleted, or other ways to free up space, put them into the comments and I'll try to update the OP. Also, try to figure out what the files are for and put that information in too.
***Warning: I am not responsible for deleting your important files, your backups, your homework, or your favorite picture of your cat. Everything in this thread has been tested by me or by at least 2 other forum users (hint, hint), but that doesn't guarantee that it won't set your tablet or your hair on fire. Use this guide at your own risk***
Big files that can be deleted:
mnt/sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails/.thumbdata3-xxxxxxx
(Has something to do with a database of thumbnails. Deleting it has not had any effect on me, but I don't use my tab for photos. Mine was 124mb).
Directories that can have ALL files in them deleted:
mnt/sdcard/Android/data/com.amazon.venezia/cache/
(This is where the Amazon Appstore puts downloaded apks, including the daily free ones, and it NEVER gets cleared out. Mine was almost 2gb when I found it.)
mnt/sdcard/ScreenCapture/
(This is where all those screencaptures you accidentally took went. I've personally never intentionally taken a screen capture...)
Apps that can be deleted
Coming soon! (Haven't flashed Task's newest (v11) yet and I think he finally got rid of some of the garbage that I have to uninstall every time I flash... Will update this list when I do)
Other ways to save space:
Titanium backup: [preferences menu]
Backup app external data
(Allows you to choose whether you want to backup app data every time you do a Titanium backup. Serious reduction in the size of your backup, but with a pretty obvious disadvantage... Check the next option for something less drastic)
Select external data by max size
(Allows you to choose the maximum size of app external data backup. Default is to keep 32mb or smaller data caches. Most apps don't exceed that, but the few that do - like copilot - don't get backed up. I didn't mess with this one but)
Max backup history : set to "1"
(Sets the number of backup data "points." One is plenty unless you want double or triple backups)
Also, check this directory:
mnt/sdcard/Android/data/
This is where most app data goes. I found lots of stuff here that I didn't need any more. It's worth mentioning that this is where music you set as "offline" on google music beta is stored.
*Tip* Most of the subfolders are easy to identify as software you own, but sometimes you'll find that an app didn't uninstall properly and the data is still there!
Hope this helps! Please add your ideas for significant space savings in the comments.
**Update: So just after I originally posted this, Task650 started making a "slim" version of his ROM. Though none of the stuff above is affected, he's taken out many of the crappy Samsung programs and saved a lot of space that way. I usually had to use Titanium Backup to delete those programs with every new flash; now there's no reason to! I definitely recommend that ROM.
**Update 2: Just wanted to say "thanks" to the person (or persons) who voted this thread 5 stars. Also "thanks" to the person (or persons) who voted it one star. That's awesome of you.

It amazes me how much crap accumulates on my tab as well - thanks for starting this thread.
A couple suggestions that I've found useful, too:
1. NANDROID backups - each of mine is at least 1GB - keep an eye on how many you're keeping around... I'm a bit of a flash-junkie, so I have 2 currently, but usually only keep one around;
2. SD Maid in the market is pretty useful at rooting out junk.... I only use the free version, so not sure how much more the paid one would remove - but every time I've run it, I usually can clear up a few 100mb.
Hope it helps!
I just do a factory reset every few months. Gets rid of a lot of crap.
Most people don't like this method because they want to "settle in" and doing a factory reset upsets the nest. However, I like to experiment a lot with apps and a reset clears out the experiments. It lets me start all over fresh.

Where could I find a "summary" of the Android file structure (no joy with google search)? Let say, a factory install of Android 2.2 or 3.0 or whatever.
It would be interesting to know what each directory is for.

Just to be clear: there's a difference between a "full wipe" (which most people mean is just using the "clear data" function in CWM) and a factory reset (which is done by going to Settings-->Privacy-->Factory Data Reset.)
The factory data reset deletes everything on the tab. I personally never use this; there's no advantage to the user since the android system sees it as an SD card. The full wipe deletes the system partition and that's the only thing that makes a difference when you're installing a new ROM.
Think of it this way: There are 3 partitions. Android is installed on one partition and an image of the stock ROM is saved on another backup partition. A third partition is just for data (this is what you see when you plug your tab into windows). When you factory reset, you're formatting both the android partition and the data partition, then installing the ROM on the android partition and recreating the file structure on the data partition. Wipe data, on the other hand, just formats the android partition--which is where the ROM is loaded. (BTW--This is totally oversimplified, if you're a dev don't flame, I'm just trying to make it easier to understand. Also, don't ever mess with the partitions on your tablet...)
BTW- This is similar to how I manage my Windows computers. I have the same three partitions described above. Every 8 weeks or so I write down the applications I want to permanently add to my system; make sure all my data is transferred to the data partition; figure out what tweaks and applications I've added since the last time I imaged the drive (I keep a list); and then I format the windows partition and reinstall the most recent image. Then I set all the tweaks and add all the applications I wrote down; run a windows update; and reimage the drive (and save the image on the recovery partition). This way my windows installation is always like brand new, except with all the updates done, all my programs installed, and all system options configured. My data is completely unaffected, and I can do this in about 15 minutes.

That's what Titanium Backup is for
What's the best way to move apps and data from n5 L to 6p M? Can we just move the Titanium BU folder to the new device and restore data? Google doesn't restore apps and data from Amazon, and seems to miss some other game data. Just restore Titanium app with Google restore? Or does nfc work with all apps and data (never tried it)?
Not sure what spell check did to the title, supposed to be "Back up data".

Titanium backup will do the trick, I've found. There are plenty of guides on how to do this. (Seems like you are familiar w/ it though.) http://bfy.tw/29yY
I usually make backups of only the apps I'm concerned about, plus a keyboard.apk I like, plus Amazon stuffs...
Then copy the folder into the SD card area of the new device.
Install TB from Play store on new phone.
Remove apps I'll be restoring, because they auto-installed, and it's kind of annoying but whatever.
Point TB to the folder I copied over, and restore one at a time. I've had some apps go sideways on a batch restore, but I don't know if it was the batch restore or the backup itself which caused the issue. Either way, I do one at a time now.
Enjoy.
More tips:
The First rule of TB is you never restore system apps.
The Second rule of TB is you NEVER restore system apps.
III Commandment : Thou shalt restoreth system apps never, or thy soul shall burn in heck.
If an app you plan on restoring DID NOT AUTO-GOOGLE-RESTORE-thingy during setup, it's a big tip it might not be compatible in some way in your new OS version / device. Go to Play store and check.
Games and other apps that already backup to the cloud - skip those, or at least don't restore them until you install from Play store normally and see how they recover. If they recover fine, then great.
Restore a small # of apps at a time, and test them all.
