[IDEA] Nexus S ICS Recent Menu - Nexus S General

Our device doesn't have a physical recent menu button as that of ICS standard. Long pressing home button is not convenient some times. I have seen some developers providing mod to use search button for recent menu, but that is not the correct way of solving.
Here is my idea.
What about using home button for recent t menu and adding a fixed home link as the first item in recent menu.
Check the screen shot, some thing similar to that.
Waiting for replies from developers.

While it may be a good idea,
I doubt it will be nice to have on a day to day basis. If a toggle to enable or disable this is made then good. If not i think it won't make much of a difference.
Now we have the recent tasks toggle in status bar itself. so.. it depends. But will be nice to have around

But how will you use voice search
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk

This seems like a hassle to me... It makes it longer and more tedious to get to the home screen. You're trading ease of multitasking for ease of getting home. It gets rid of the problem and makes a new one. The search button recents app is so much faster and easier.
I'm not bashing your idea don't get me wrong . I can see potential.... but it kind of seems redundant to me right now.

Agreed.
Now getting back to home takes two clicks. Also, you have to wait for the Recent Apps list to load (which does take some time.)
All so that we have the search key readily available? That key isn't even used as most apps provide a button on-screen for search.
I'd imagine this would only be useful to people who use Voice Commands a lot.

My recent tab has no wait/load time? Try changing the window animation speed. And yeah, most apps integrated a search button to cope with ICS and for general easy of use. I never use voice commands or the search button... Now I finally have a use for it.

Compared to recent apps GB style there is a period of time where the screenshots have to fill in the cache. On ICS, if you select recent apps, I find there is about a 1-2 second wait. After it's done caching if you access the recent apps list again it's instantaneous.
The GB style recent apps list is always instantaneous since it doesn't have to load the screenshots of all the recent apps.

I definitely do not want to click twice to reach the homescreen.

Is there a way to return to the recent apps list that we had before ICS?

This idea reminds me of WebOS

Whats the fastest custom rom?

yeah whats everyones fastest most stable combination?mine so far would be nfinitefx45 deoxed stock rom with a 768 overclocked kernal.and the new CyanogenMod-6 rc is pretty fast!with the uncapped kernal
Cyanogen 6 with dec s uncapped kernel clocked to 768. Using battery tweak, juice defender, jit enabled, surface dithering disabled, home locked in memory. I get about 420 on quadrant and around 5.2 mflops

i recently installed cyanogen 6 with the google addon.
What is the " with dec s uncapped kernel clocked to 768. Using battery tweak, juice defender, jit enabled, surface dithering disabled, home locked in memory" you are refering to?
I currently use set cpu to overclock to 691. I currently am only getting just under 3 mflops and just under 400 on quadrant.

Decad3nce has an uncapped Kernel - the stock cm6 one is capped so users with older chips (without the "With Google" branding) can boot.
Battery Tweak by Dec and Collin_Ph improves battery life by installing a small user defined service (I can't remember what exactly it does)
Juice defender is an app in the market that controls battery use of apps.
JIT - "Just In Time" compiling - very techy stuff here but more or less gives you more MFLOPS - but our Heros dont have enough ram for it to truely be effective.
Surface Dithering is a CM6 option that makes the screen look better. Google the term and see what it does for photos and stuff.
Home Locked in memory keeps the OS from flushing it from cache and causing a few issues, like hitting the home button and all the screens being blank for a second while it populates them.
So the above statement is just his lits of configs that make the device run best for him. But remember MFLOPs and Quadrants aren't everything Alot of it is feel.
Wow that was nice and detailed explanation. I'd up vote it if I could.
I haven't used the uncalled kernal. I have with google branding. I think I'll try it anyway.
Cm6 fresh install seems faster than any other rom I've ever tried. I turn off eye candy and it flies

I've though of doing that from time to time but don't seem to be suited for any of the jobs they offer Americans at decent wage. I'm best suited for engine room with my navy training. Reason to go with cruise line would be to see nicer destination ports

I gave up using Fresh ROM because it was getting laggy and we haven't had an update since August, so I finally made the switch to Cyanogen's RC1. Overclocked to 768 mhz, I've been getting 438 consistently on Quadrant. Linpack has been giving me varying results around 3 MFLOPS. The best I've gotten was 3.25.
I'm really curious as to how other Heroes do!

Mms.apk with custom Smileys for Google Nexus S

Hi all
I just did this Mms.apk for myself, which includes some of the Yolks Emoticons and I thought it could be nice to share it with you.
I just put it in my Nexus S i9023, it works greatly and emoticons show in both sent and received messages...
To be honest i've never seen or used xml in my whole life but i did this customization in an hour or less and i put it in my /system/app directory. Suddenly the phone rebooted by itself and optimized the new Mms.apk, so no crashes or bricks.
Anyway i'm not responsible for anything and use it at your own risk
P.S.: ah right... it can be used correctly with english or italian language (which is my main language )
I really like the emoticons . The only problem is the Smiley face shortcut on my keyboard still shows the faces with noses

I'm not sure... I'm studying for my last university exam because i'm going to graduate the next month and i don't have much free time at the moment Then I'm going to learn how to build Android apps.
By the way it depends on which keyboard are you using. I use swype for example
I already planned to edit the colors of the Mms.apk in order to have a black skin instead of a white one, so it shouldn't be hard to edit the keyboard too if you are patient
Editing the system apks isn't as hard as I expected so I wonder why it's impossible to find custom-themed apps to replace the original ones
Nice work...
After a little while the Smiley faces seem to disappear and resort to stock... Then I have to reinstall the app. I'm not sure why...

Slim ICS ROM. latest version, with Matr1x 18.5. I have the default scheduler. set at 200/1000 or 1200 with smartassV2. I use the supercharger script with option 5 and lag nullifier.
Other then that, I keep stuff running in the backround to a minimum. On the kernel, I use CFS, but if you are looking for gaming then try using the BFS version.
I just have unrooted nexus s with android 4.0.4 and it runs temple run with little to no lag also don't store it on SD card... makes it slower for some reason

Check my signature. I have my phone Underclocked and I don't have lag or force closes.
I don't experience them with wifi or data on either. Although if you do it could be receiving data from the server or sending data to post your score or something. That would obviously slow it down.
There is only one thing you need to do to get rid of the lag, you don't have to go through the trouble of flashing a new ROM. Just go to your settings. Make sure it isn't on the SD card, move it to USB storage.
Although if you are switching ROMs and everything I'll give you some extra information. I forced GPU rendering. I have v6Supercharge script, option 5 + Nitrolagnullifier. Min free task killer takes 75 MB of RAM to itself. And I have every start-up tweak enabled.

Had no lags with:
- Codename Android 1.60 (ICS 4.0.3) + Air Kernel 3.8 (now using this combo, works very well)

Matr1x Kernel 18.5 was laggy and unstable. (tested with CNA, Slim, Brainmasters)

I don't use AOKP, but I'd use Trinity. It's familiar to me since I used it a bit on my Nexus 7 back in the day, has a fsync toggle, and I find KTManta has... a lot of settings (this really isn't a problem though for most people)

Many people actually site the abundance of settings as KTManta's strongest feature. Case in point would be the fact that it seems to be the only kernel out there that has any sort of display calibration settings, although still considerably lacking. So from a performance standpoint the Trinity has an edge then?
They are both great kernels... We are lucky... You can't go wrong with either

Yes and no. At stock settings between both I think Trinity does have an advantage, because Im pretty sure 620MHz is the default speed for the GPU. KTManta is faster right now, but it also allows for higher clock speeds and has more options. But those higher speeds are not default on the KTManta kernel, you have to select them if you want to overclocked GPU on your tablet.
Both kernels have automatic RAM overclocks up to 866 MHz when you get to the higher GPU steps (above 533 speed), but KTManta will have in its next release (unless Ktoonsez and my tests say otherwise) up to 912MHz memory speed. But again, that wont be default as it is a high overclock setting. SO default to default, Trinity, but when fully tweaked out on both, KTManta is faster. There are some nice and easy settings pre-made to load in the tweaking app if you dont want to do the fully tweaked out settings yourself. Some really great member posted them on page 275 of the KTManta thread :silly:
i use ktmanta 03-02-13b with aokp
positive
- stability ( except inserting a device through otg )
- fast
- battery ok ( ktkoonservative , sio )
negatives
- gets too hot in games
- zen not working for me ( letters corruption)
- not compatible with pppoewidget drivers for my modem
Trinity kernel are very good for battery and coolness , except i can use them with my external hdd
New ktmanta are the best now for many ,i think, but for me gives instability problems ( restart when use the bar progress in a movie with mx player , restarts sometimes with the default settings )
Franco kernels are still imature for me .
They all are very good kernels from very inteligent developers so we are in good hands for this device . you should try it all . as many here saying - every device reacts different.

[Opinion] WHICH SETUP WORKS FOR YOU?: Best Rom/Kernel/MOD configurations

The purpose of this thread is to have the HTC One community come together and share what configurations work for them mainly when it comes to Battery Life and Performance.
Now after being a SENSE Lover for so long, I was hesitant to leave it mainly because of GPE/AOSP crappy Emoji's. Then after forcing myself to move to AOSP, I found it hard to leave because of HALO. Then upon finding out that HALO had been ported to the Xposed Framework and finding a way to put apple emoji on the HTC One, I decided to try out a GPE Rom which led me to create this thread. Here is my current configuration:
ROM: SinLessROM GPe v6.2.5 Beta 4.4.2 (with Nocturnal Settings)
Kernel: ElementalX 11.4
CPU underclocked to 1350 MHz
Undervolted to 725 Min
GPU Overclocked to 504 MHz
GPU Governor: Simple
CPU Thermal throttling: Run Hot
Manages CPU Cores: Battery Savings (Experimental)
Logo2Menu
USB Fastcharge
Enable Graphics Boost
Enable extFAT support
Went to Developers Options and selected "Force GPU Rendering"
Runtime: Dalvik
Performance: This configuration has doubt been the BEST I have ever used. The phone is extremely snappy and the problem I used to have that my phone wouldn't charge while it was plugged and I was using it is completely gone. My phone NEVER gets hot or lags, even when watching movies while being on a phone call (don't ask lol) or listening to music while playing Real Racing or Asphalt 8. There's was no need to overclock the CPU so instead I Underclocked it to reduce heat. I used to be the type to Max out everything but I've realized that in reality, how much power can an app actually consume? Apps open in a second and I have absolutely NO hiccups in any of my apps.
Battery Life: As you could see from the screenshots over provided, I've never had battery life life this before. 6 hours plus with the screen being on about 85% of the time and phone being awake about 90% of that time (I'm a heavy user) and still being on 29% left is simply amazing (to me). Not to mention one been listening to music (Apollo Music Player) about 75 of the entire time.

I dislike the Hangouts messaging app as it has bad looking emoji icons and no "return" key to make a new line when sending text messages.
