Touchwiz vs Nova Launcher on Galaxy S2 running XXLPQ (4.0.3) - Galaxy S II General

I tried both of these and think the Touchwiz launcher's animations and transitions run on the CPU and is hence affected in Powersaving Mode (Frame rate drops), but with Nova Launcher and full GPU rendering, the phone is perfectly fluid even with Powersaving mode. Can anyone confirm this?

Will test later today.

I first tried Launcher Go ex (or what ever it's called).
Now I'm on Nova Launcher Prime ($4), and it's a lot better.
In combination with the Pro Widgets.
Does it automaticly do full GPU or have you enabled it in de developers settings?

Seems to be doing full GPU accel without enabling the force option. I have currently disabled the force 2d GPU thing as it causes the wallpaper app to FC.

I'm using Nova Launcher now with DarkyRom, I have to say I would prefer TW, but not sure if there's a CWM flashable version of stock(or something that has TW included) yet.
Nova seems to work fine for me, it does look more like ICS, i've not tested battery life to the max yet, flashed it yesterday, at work now, let's see how long it lasts me on a full day of normal/to high usage.

I'm on Apex

It shouldnt affect battery adversely. Will confirm after testing. With Force 2D option, you are able to set a wallpaper from your gallery? I experience FC's when I try to do that.

Yep, Apex is best i think.
Just upgraded to official ICS and with Apex it looks totally like Galaxy Nexus. I dont care about white clock and green battery on status bar, the only thing I wish is better settings.apk(with ICS feel on it) and normal lock screen(Still cant understand, why they didnt wanted to put more functionality on it, camera or dialer/sms. Why did they choose that emtpy lock thingy).

I prefer a simpler experience, I have installed AndyX, and I prefer Trebuchet

You can always get TWlauncher back through DarkyOTA app. I answered this question by searching Google. Remember...Google is your friend do not be scared to use it. Cheers.

Is there any ICS themed launcher that allows you to place the digital clock widget at the top of the screen? They all kick it down 1 line. Also, it would need to allow the accuweather widget to be resized properly, without having text that overlaps.
I have yet to find a launcher aside from Touchwiz that does this.

I much rather prefer 360launcher. Does the job awesome for me. Apex is kinda stuttery for me me, and Go Launcher icons are somewhat smaller than the rest.

In Nova you can resize widget to cut out the blank spaces above and below the clock. once done you'll get your 4x1 clock back.

How do we get the epic's launcher?

My friend just got the epic 4g and its got the default android launcher how do we get that on our phone?
There is a way that they and the fascinate can disable tw launcher in their settings. According 2 the article I read, the Captivate and Vibrant lack that ability. Their is a link somewhere around here for the Nexus' launcher2. It works ok-im still using it. Ill try 2 post if I can find it.

LauncherPro is actually FASTER than stock launcher on Nexus One. I had to load Launcher Pro on my friend's Nexus cuz the stock launcher was so darn slow...
I've had lots of problems with LauncherPro. I've installed and removed it about 4 times. It works fine for a few days and then I start to have FC and huge lags. Remove it and everything is working good again.
I've found that Zeam is a great launcher, very minimal to start with but you can add what you want.

Nice find. I could never get myself to enjoy launcherpro either, and actually liked touchwiz. Zeam, however is awesome.
I'm a huge fan of ADW. It runs soo fast, and I'm a huge fan of being able to edit the number of rows/columns, I rather enjoy the High res look, and all my widgets scale correctly.. I love the shortcut bar too.. Best launcher ever.
I tried launcer pro, but I wasn't a fan, i switched back to regular touchwiz until I decided to give adw a go.

Yeah, you can turn off Touchwiz on the Sprint Epic 4G and get rid of the static home screen icons and horizontal launcher. But what you're left with isn't really an improvement. You're stuck with three home screens, an outdated launcher, and a feeling of guilt for not listening to us in the first place.

I thought that the Epic was using TW 2.5 because it needed landscape support. Maybe they used that as a base for the other CDMA (fascinate) ROM.
The Captivate and Vibrant both have TW 3.0.

I think both Epic and Fascinate have this feature because Samsung had to make all the TouchWiz apps and data fit in the 2GB of internal RAM, since the user may take out the SD card at any point. Since Vibrant and Captivate have 16GB of non removable memory, Samsung decided to not bother optimizing our TouchWiz as much or for allowing the removal of some of that bloat.
I vote for Odin3 and Launcher Pro - Forget the Epic Launcher
I can't bring myself to try ADW again because I don't think I can live without the Launcher Pro Plus widgets.

Phone is so much faster with ADW

Hi,
Couple questions.
Does it make sense that my phone, and everything about it is a lot snappier/faster ever since I installed ADW.Launcher? Even if I use my phone, switch back to TouchWiz, I can notice a clear conference in response.
Also, my phone is rooted. Am I able to remove TW if I have another launcher in place? I've never talked liked TW.

Yes. it does make sense. TouchWiz has lots of add-ons which are running in the background.
I have tried ADW.Launcher and its fast, but LauncherPro is even faster. Give it a try, you will feel the difference.
I went from TW to ADW to launcherpro and launcherpro is definitely the most snappy
This may seem like a dumb question, but I'm fairly new to all this.
When people switch Home launchers and develop their own home screens, do they do it all on the phone using Desktop Visualizer?
Or is there a way to make up the design with icons, home screen and which services you want to run etc. Using your PC before copying it to your phone?
Thanks. Ill try out Launcher Pro.
As for three other question. Am I able to remove TouchWiz?

Let us know how you get on with Launcher because I'm also running ADW and it seems pretty good. I tried Launcher several months ago and thought it was good but didn't notice a speed difference when I installed ADW. I just like how ADW works but would give that up if Launcher was faster.
I noticed the exact opposite:
I switched from TW to Launcher Pro and now the phone feels alot slower and it takes ages to open the dialer or the contacts.
What am I doing wrong?

Yes you can remove TouchWiz and set any other launcher app as default home.
For those that just want speed and few extra features look no further than zeam launcher. little slower is launcher pro with some caveats regarding full screen options and lately with more addons seems to be slowing down to adw level. Lastly adw while slowest of the three makes up with just sheer number of customizations options. love the double click gesture on zeam wish the others would copy it. Adw as daily driver for me though. Memory usage corresponds to the overall speed.

I agree with this post. When you install Launcher Pro, then look at the RAM being used, it's like both TW and launcher pro are both using memory at the same time so it was back to TW for me as it just ran better. However, at some stage I'm going to give a Custom Rom a go that you can remove TW altogether and then I'd say Launcher Pro should be awesome

[Q] Smoothness... I want more

I just got my TF 6 hrs ago and I am not impressed with how smooth the main screens are when scrolling sideways. It looks like it is stuttering. I want it as smooth as my Pyromod G2.
I was hoping that the 3.1 update fixes this but I just got the update and still stuttering.
Is there any solution other than rooting and overclocking to the max. Is there a launcher settings that I can adjust?
My home screen is really smooth. But I am using regular wallpaper and not the live one.
I guess the first thing to do would be to use the same launcher if it's supported on Honeycomb. I like the HC launcher myself. Every now and then it's a little slow when it first gets going or after being off for a while but nothing that effects usability. I guess the issue might be that you're comparing a hacked, customized and tweaked Android 2.x device moving 800x480 pixels to a whole new unmodified factory OS moving 1200x800 pixels so I would sort of expect it to be a little less optimized from the get go.
I'm running the Primordial 3.1 build right now with the OC kernel at 1.4 GHz and everything just moves right along for me.
So might want to start with apples to apples and go from there.
I noticed my Transformer had started feeling really sluggish and I hadn't even installed much. I was rebooting often and it seemed to help a little for a short time. Then I just removed an application I installed recently and wow, performance was smooth again.
That app was TweetCaster Pro, something I grabbed as a free app of the day from the Amazon Appstore. Don't know if it was just that app or maybe some weird combination that didn't like each other. *shrug* But things are a lot smoother. So it might be worth looking at some of your apps, especially those that install background services that like to look for updates frequently.
ADW EX you won't get any smoother than that
For twitter i use Tweetcomb, totally awesome
LauncherPro also runs really smooth on Tegra devices.
Stock Google launchers typically aren't very smooth, especially on a brand new chipset.
does other launcher show the app icon as big as hc stock launcher? more icon and widget sure will slow down the animation, but I found that by tapping the most left or right side of the screen will take you to other page with faster animation n of course it is smoother

Change the icon to any picture.

It was still a virgin TF but it was not meeting my expectations. Maybe because I am used to a smother one.
Anyway, I installed Launcher Pro Plus, (I remember I purchased this before) and the performance improved a little bit. I wonder if the ADW EX is better.
I really don't want to root this TF but I really crave the smoothness that I find in my G2 so I have no choice but to root it when I get my extra Micro SDHC. BTW, does the new ROMS support/Include ASUS MyCloud, MyNet, .. etc.
Also, I've read that Netflix and Yahoo Messenger Video chat isn't fully working yet.
All in all, other than those intangible (software) shortcomings I still like the TF hardware. Softwares will get fixed soon, but crappy hardware will stay crappy forever in the tablet world.
The rooted roms are all up to date and are built using the OTA releases so yea all the asus software is still included

Live wallpapers murder performance. If you select a static one, your performance will be far better. Next would be widgets; try and keep them to a minimum if you can.

Venting: Why is the homescreen so laggy?

This seems to be such a common problem for android phones and tablets. Even with deodexed, slimmed, optimized roms and overclocked kernels, it just boggles my mind that the homescreen is the slowest part of the android experience. Other apps scroll smoothly and are responsive, but the homescreen is jerky and slow.
Try this: Long click an icon and drag it around the screen. The thing can't follow even a moderately fast-moving finger. And that's just a simple icon moving on a 2d plane. But then, I can run a playstation emulator in 3d without problems.
The same thing has been true on my G1, SGS, Droid Charge, GTab 10.1, and Moto Droid 1.
Am I missing something?
i dunno mayne its the snap to grid that causes it because flipping back and forth from pane to pane is smooth.
Coming from the transformer, this was the first thing i actually noticed. One thing that would help is to change the default wallpaper to one of your own. It actually improves it significantly

I have a Xoom on 3.2 and the home screen is really smooth. I have looked at many Touchwiz videos on Youtube and it seems very laggy compared to my Xoom. But i guess i will soon see it in person, just ordered a GT10.1 3G.
Only reason that your tab or phone are laggy on homescreen is due to either wallpaper or widget,
To fix it get wallpaper wizardrii and set to no scroll.
In regards to the icons well notice that you have additional few more effects when you tap and hold icons, there is stransparency, grid etc. If you want to move icons from app dock to homescreen it shows both at the same time, and homescreen is active not paused.
Ios will never be able to do this there is just to much
At the moment my tab is acting really weird.
My wallpaper is scrolling although it should not, screen is absolutely jitter free all that happened since I've activated kies via wifi and deselected usb debugging (needed it to install drivers)

Can't say mine is laggy at all but I'm not using the stock launcher. The latest "UEKMB" slim Launcher2 with enabled hw acceleration and Multipicture LWP looks and feels extremely smooth. I have no comparison to another Honeycomb Tablet but I can't really see it getting noticeable "smoother".

I'm using ADW Launcher EX, and the screen is super smooth/responsive. The latest version has a high-density option, so we still get the big icons. It's $2 or $3 but it's worth it, and the other thing is to disable the scrolling desktop.
Give it a try. I'm not sure why the stock launcher is so choppy, but they could learn something from the folks who made ADW.

I just finished installing ADW launcher ex and its A LOT smoother than stock, the transition from landscape to portrait view is still a bit droggy but that's probably because of the widgets. I'm loving the new look ADW gave my tablet.

Its because Google has little to no interest in fixing the UI/gpu/hw acceleration issues.
Your phone tablet apps launcher etc have nothing to do with it. Its a fundamental issue with Android that has been ignored and no intention of real fix.

It is well known that Google cuts corners in relation to standardization and hardware acceleration. Instead the focus on incrementally updating release numbers instead.

Lag and framerate drops happen across the ui not just the launcher. It is an Android problem not anything device specific.
I have a standard (scrolling, but not live) wallpaper, 5 widgets and maybe 30 shortcut icons on my desktop/homescreen. Scrolling from one to another is silky smooth (3.1 TW). On one occasion it was quite laggy, it seemed like it had gone from hw accel'd to software for no obvious reason.... Quick reboot fixed it, though.
While it's probably true some performace issues lie with google, I'd wager most problems lie with users and developers doing things badly (or trying to do too much).

Which launcher and why...

First of all, I should say, if this topic has already been discussed, then I apologise, and pelase just point me to the right direction. If not, let's get the discussion going!
I started this thread really for 2 reasons. One is to find out for myself (and hopefully for others) which launcher app is more suitable for my needs. And the second one is to have a discussion on the pro's and con's of the different launchers available.
For the GNote as a standard there is the TW launcher of course. I haven't seen any real shortcomings with it. I quite like it. it's clean, smooth and it works.
I am aware of three others: ADW, GO launcher, and launcher pro. I think ADW has a free and a pay version, and I assume the pay version has more features.
I haven't used any of the others on the GNote, and I never used the GO launcher. However, I did use ADW and LauncherPro both on my viewsonic Gtab. On that particular device I found launcher pro more suitable for my needs. Again, it was clean, simple and smooth.
I've never attempted using addons for either, and I am now becoming aware of the different ways to change icons, themes, etc. It'd be interesting to know what can be done with which launchers...

If I'm not mistaken, only the stock TW Launcher has true hardware acceleration thanks to Samsung's work on it. Every other launcher should be software driven (i.e., CPU taxing).
Go Launcher Ex. I tried almost all popular ones and Go is just the best IMO. I can resize widgets, easily create folders and it's highly customizable.

I personally use now Go Launcher Ex-highly customizable etc...but I recommend you to have a look at the "Post your homescreen" threads where you'll see different types of homescreens and launchers by the users.
Another site which is quite good for this is mycolorscreen.com/ where you'll see different homescreens and normally the Widgets in use with the market link. So you'll be able to learn how to customize your screen on your own

Am I the only one who dislike multi pages launchers? On the Gnote this artifice is not necessary anymore, I just have ADW with only one screen and with some tuning I have enough room for my often used apps, two folders and a off off my kid. I even disabled auto rotate. On such a big screen landscape makes no sense for home screen and most apps but pictures and video.

One word: Widgets!
I used to use ADW but it ha gotten too buggy, and it looks like it's not being developed anymore .
These days it's go launcher, but really it's just a place holder until I can load ICS, and the stock launcher

Am I the only one who thinks the none of the launchers are doing it right?
For all I know, TW launcher is the only launcher that uses hardware acceleration. It NEVER lags. Compared to other launchers, I'd stick with it. (I'm on RR v22, ICS for RR v1.6)
TW launcher on ICS for RR looks so much better than stock TW. It makes it bearable. Plus it doesn't lag.
VTL launcher 1.7.0 with left and right docks active, absolutly the more versatile one!

Great site, thanks! Just opened it and found a great homescreen containing several widgets I've been literaly looking for and didn't know they exist. Can't post links yet unfortunately, but you can go have a look and see if it also catches your attention Its on a Note too!

Not that I dislike them, but I'm sure gonna go for as few as I can. Thinking about 2 or so, depends on how many widgets I'm actually gonna need. I don't like to keep scrolling to find what I want.
I installed several launchers and launcher modifiers. Most modifiers sucked. I think they put adware on my phone because once a day or so I get an advert pop up that is not from my provider (I recognise some new type of icons in the notification bar). I uninstalled the launcher modifiers very quickly so I forgot their names. I tried ADW, and so far decided to stick with launcher pro, as it gave me what I needed (customised icons for apps and dock). Anything else wasn't really of interest for me from a functional perspective.
Im using launcher pro on the chinese leak ICS and its so smooth its insane. It looks to be rendering in 60p while using a live wallpaper with absolutely no lag at all. I like the animations and options in it but it is getting a little dated and could do with an upgrade to add some more widgets and functionality.
This was fairly smooth on GB roms pretty much the same as TW launcher but on the ICS leak this flies
You can shrink and zoom all widgets in the paid version from 1x1 to full screen and this works well with nearly every widget I have tried. This is very useful when reducing DPI even though atm I am using the stock 320 incase it breaks something reducing this.
The TW launcher is so low for me when scrolling left and right even though its smooth it just moves across pretty slow, I like to get to where I want quick and launcher pro does this. I havent tried many other launchers lately but tried them all before and keep going back to launcher pro even though it hasnt been updated in a while.
@martcerv: So how is that ICS leak working out for you? Many seem to have problems of all sorts with it...
I have been using spb shell 3d in tablet mode with resizable widgets and for me its the best.
It displays 8 rows x 6 columns and is really suited to the Note. The labels maybe small for some, but not really needed.
For me its the best experience, its compatible with the ICS chainfire release and is very smooth and responsive.
I have adjusted dpi to 213 for better views in gmail etc, but this does not effect shell 3d. At 213 dpi you loose the top bar for some reason, but have put info onto homescreen, see pic
