Buying a facinate, what concerns should i have? - Fascinate General

I used to have a vibrant, and while i had an early model, the gps really suked. after returning the phone the gps was marginal, it locked but had weak reception.
How is the facinate, i hear it had a competely different gps chip? how is the reception on gps test?

install aokp and it will be perfect.

The gps in the fascinate is just as bad. I have tried every possible rom in this world and I cant get the phone to lock into any satellites and when it does it drops them whithin a couple of minutes.
This is not just me, google it and you will find dozens of fascinate owners with the same gps issues. My wife just got a rezound, hers lock into 11 or 12 sats whithin 5 secons while INDOORS!!!!
Given the other options in the market, I would not by a fascinate today. In fact, verizon is sending me a refurb fascinate that maybe will have a better gps radio.
My 2 cents

QFT. I used to have awful GPS and thought my hardware was bad until installing Glitch Kernel and AOKP. Instant locks and 12 satellites now.. I've had the satellite accuracy down to 6 feet. That's almost good enough for military grade munition strikes.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA

Maybe i've never had an uber-super-rad-perfect GPS or something, but the GPS on my fascinate has always worked pretty well, I thought. The girlfriend and I have done a lot of Geocaching using the c:geo app and it's almost never let us down (save a handful of gps resets using gps status).

Perhaps you guys are right and I need to talk to V. Thanks for your opinions guys, i'll keep you posted.

While the gps was weak in the early days, I haven't had a problem with it since froyo. It locks usually within 15 seconds and nearly always within 30.

try enyos espresso tweaks, they saved my gps
Sent from my AOKP SCH-i500

Stock, Touchwiz ROM, MTD Rom has not made a difference for me. I get locked onto 11 0r 12 satellites within 20 seconds outdoors and 6 or 7 while indoors. I get an accuracy of about 6 ft.

GPS fix not expected until September

This is what I read on @samsungmobileus, isn't that also when they plan on updating the galaxy s to 2.2? Really am amazed that it has taken this long just for then to do anything about this, a fix should have been released a long time ago. While my gps is working now for the most part it still isn't up to part with my g1 sadly. My g1 will instantly lock onto nine to ten satellites in gps test, whereas my vibrant will see twelve and lock into four.

Not really. I just trick the gps into catching, and that wool work fine until a fix is pushed. There's not a better phone available atm.

Good lord man!
How many times are you gonna say you want to return this thing?
Your post on september 13th said you were going to return it because "the droid x destroys it"
And considering you said then that you had the fascinate for "a few days" then I think your 30 days have come and gone.
Sorry to flame but this is annoying!

2.2 will be here soon enough. Til then enjoy what is the best phone on the market. Besides the droid x is just ugly!

See Ya !
Dx is really not that great of a phone ( except call quality)
Fascinate is exactly what the name implies......
Care to clarify how you "trick the gps into catching?" Thanks
Ummm please read carefully. I never said the DROID X destroys this. I said I owned the Droid X. And yes I said I was going to get rid of it.....but what did i say i was gonna get rid of it for? Windows Mobile 7 Phone.......Since im on verizon that is a few months away.
So Im with android till then. And well I dont want to get stuck with a phone whose GPS doesnt work.
Just asking who else is in the same boat...... The GPS is a huge issue for alot of people
Oh Also I returned and swapped it once for the GPS issue, I thought it was a hardware problem.
Yeah Im in the same boat I love the phone but my 30 days are almost up also .... No fix for the GPS scares me also.
A big selling point of android for me is the Free Navigation...with a ****ty GPS theres no point.
Everyone complains about this gps as if it NEVER works or obtains a fix which isn't true. It does work & it does obtain a fix, it just takes longer to do it. I live in rural northern MI, surrounded by thousands of acres of dense forests and I can say my google nav has never failed me yet. Yes, this phone is not perfect and it has room to improve, just like they all do, but that's where the great dev community comes in. Isn't that what "open source" means? Maybe next time do more research before you take the plunge, we really haven't come across anything new to the galaxy s family.

If i notice a delay in catching, I just exit navigation to the normal map, and pin point my own current location. When I go back into navigation, I'm connected.
haha it takes longer? Oh please when I use GPS to find my location it sometimes puts me in the ocean!!!!
The GPS on the fascinate is horrible.
Im suprised this doesnt get enough conversation.
my gps is fine, it locks on well... but it takes like 30 minutes to an hour to lock on lol
My last day to return the phone was Saturday and I was going to do it. But on Friday I got really drunk and went on a 3 day bender... By the time I sobered up and remembered I had to take the phone back it was too damn late
Lol. Well apparently I am not having the same problem everyone else seems to be. Like I said, mine locks when I tell it to target me, and after that navigate picks up immediately. Might have something to do with my configuration, or something I've pulled.
Mine takes a few minutes to lock, but it's accurate after that. Not really a deal breaker imo.
Did you really need a thread to tell us this though? If you're not happy, take it back. No need to let us know. We won't hate you.
Maybe I'll make a thread about how my GPS doesn't work, but I'm NOT returning my Fascinate.
Root the thing already and run a good rom like blue breeze. I did and am finally LOVING my fascinate! GPS issues are gone and I get lock in seconds. Camera is vastly improved and lag in the phone itself is gone. Why wait for a fix when it already exists? Enjoy your phone for christs sake.

My GPS works just fine. If I don't use it for a couple days it takes a bit to find me but that's not a real problem.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Same here. I travel by air a lot, so when I fire up the GPSfor the first time in a new city, it takes about 2-3 minutes to lock, but after that it's dead-on accurate. It's faster than some Garmins from a cold start.
Download "GPS Status" from the Market.
Before you go into the navigation software, open "GPS Status" and do the following:
Go to Settings -> "GPS & Sensors" -> "Manage A-GPS state" --> "Reset".
After doing this, the phone usually finds my location within 2 seconds. Works everytime!

My questions to "communicate-with-samsung"

Thought i'd post these here. Others can post theres as well. If I get any answers I'll post those here also.
1. Are there plans to fix the gps issues on the epic? Or is it simply hardware related?
2. Why did samsung choose the rfs file system?
3. What is Samsung's corporate position on open-source software development?

I have a problem where the gps doesn't lock at random. Usually a battery pull clears the problem. Accuracy is usually within 30 feet or so.
Rfs? It was the thing they had at the time. On new phones they are using ext4.
Supposedly 2.2.1 official on Monday will address GPS.... we will see... not sure the point of that Q&A at this time (the next few days) as we have yet to see what they listened to for the build they are dropping in a few days. I honestly think he wants our input on matters other than software/hardware complaints that are well known. I think that will be useful if everyone is contented with the 2.2.1 release, Its not a bad thing to have a suggestion box, IF the issues are addressed somewhat promptly...
I asked:
Does Samsung intend to address the hardware keyboard issue that causes the phone to miss keystrokes?
and
one other question that I completely forgot.
Edit: strike that, just remembered.
Is Samsung going to offer firmware updates for the Camera which is available in the settings menu of the leaked 2.2 rom??

Gps locks fine and quickly, but then loses lock after 5-15 minutes. You have to manually turn the gps on and off again to get it to re lock.
And I asked because it was supposed to be addressed in an update that came our months ago but still happens for a lot of us.

Dont forget you cant lock GPS with wifi or 4g on.
Well there must be enough wrong with GPS for them to mention it as one of the main features of the udpate to happen monday... hopefully they will fix your issues, I have got my GPS to 2 meters on DK28, but actually have yet to leave it on for an extended period of time, dont really use Nav, I know my city from jobs... and dont really like leaving that on, Ive disabled it since they first came in phones... tinfoil hat and all...
HW Keyboard!!! If it does not improve, I will take it in for service. I got a replacement like Jan 3, for my OG that I had since launch week, and aside from the screen fail, my original never dropped keys... not that I can remember... it also seems to be getting worse, and since January I have not gotten that much faster at typing on it to make a difference that way... but I HOPE its software... else I may end up with another TEP claim.

Generally not for long. Leave WiFi on for 2 days, without ever shutting it off. Then try getting a lock. Promise you won't be able to.
I've never had problems locking on to GPS
The problem that I share with many others is that the GPS will randomly stop connecting with satellites after 10-20 minutes of use. Sometimes a lot sooner than that. It'll reconnect after about 2 minutes, but its really annoying when you're using google nav.
I've tried using GPS status and I can see that it has a great signal, but it won't connect to a couple of sats at random times. Very buggy.
AFTER the update, if it happens, those with GPS issues should get an ALL GPS thread like the 2.2 one... it seems like a real clusterfuk as it stands, and theres no clear proof that its software, or a crappy GPS radio, and thats the end of the story. After the update, which claims to address GPS, those with GPS issues need to compare notes, and figure out as best as possible what is hardware limitation, what is software, what is user error. As stated above, other software besides google maps should be tried as well, in case there is something weird happening with that... I dont use GPS much, so I wonder why this issue keeps popping up so much, and people dont collaborate enough on solving the issue. After that best GPS fix ever thread popped up, I Odin'ed to DI18, and did all the steps, even considered going to DG27 or whatever to be extra retentive, but once I got all the way up to my rooted, rom'd setup, got 2 meters, or maybe 1... thats all I bothered with. I understand those that use their epics as a tom-tom need much higher standards of connectivity.... hopefully you wont be disappointed.
I hope so too. I work at several different locations and user the phone as nav. Gps locks fine, just loses lock soon enough, often at critical times...

Sluggish GPS After KF3 Update!!! HELP!!!

I just got an SGS 2 last week. GPS locks were extremely quick on KE4. However, since updating to KF3**, I literally cannot get a lock on any satellites. GPS test indicates that the handset is picking up at least five satellites, but isn't locking on to them. Any possible solutions?
Restore KE4 .

Do I have to flash it using ODIN? Or is there an easier way to roll-back firmware versions?
There are some custom roms that include a gps fast fix mod for europe. If you're european, you could check it out.

5 satellites is not enough if they're too close to each other (as seen from the phone), so it might simply be an issue with bad coverage where you were. Please note that satellites are moving so it doesn't mean anything that it worked at another occasion.

Sprint Turns On Enhanced 3G In Atlanta

it would be great if anyone in Atlanta could post up some speed test results substantiating these claims.
I have been waiting patiently for sprint to finally make a move and if people ate really seeing better speeds it may be worth keeping.
So anyone from a great data area able to share?

If you're in the affected area, maybe update your PRL and see if that gets it back on track? Or maybe it's just all the new speedy users in Atlanta sucking the bandwidth from the rest of us ;]
Heres the thing I live in McDonough (metro ATL) and work in ATL, since this service has been turned on, it seems like the penetration is so much worse, no signal in any building. I'm no noob, so I have done everything I know how to reset the signal, nothing works, 3 phones. And many other friends have the same problem. I'll be complaining to Sprint soon. Now when I'm outside I get a great signal, with the same speed as before this service was turned on, so take that as you will.

Actually I have all the modems on my sdcard, and now the fb27 thanks to calkulin. Ive always had the best results for signal strength with eg31, best speed with fb21. Just installed fb27, but it hasnt helped the problem Im seeing, this is with my touch and 3 og epics (brother, mom, my og epic). Im also seeing when indoors and use an internet speed test app its choosing out of state servers, but when outside and I have a signal it is choosing a close location, but still jumps from 3/4/5 bars to no bars, and internet speeds drop out about every 15secs for 5 secs. Everything Im saying is well tested on 4 phones, and 1 in 2 places by me, still seeing the same thing. This is either being worked on or just the way the new signal is pulsing.
