Updates for a Optus (telcom) acer a501 tablet - Acer Iconia A500

Hi,
I just have a basic question on what people think and how the update would be handled if it would even happen
I have purchased my Acer a501 with optus (Australia's 2nd Biggest Mobile Network Company)
My Acer is on a yearly plan inc 2GB/mth for $40/mth for 12mth. ($480 inc data) not a bad deal! considering i seen sales for 1.5 the price in shops.
anyways I am excited about ICS, and hope I will one day use it.
does anyone have experience owning a device which is sub.branded with another company eg: optus/acer Iconia.
when I switch my unit on, it says ACER, then a OPTUS logo is shown until it's booted
will this type of unit retrieve updates via system update notification? that be same as unlocked A501's?
or Will i be required to ROM my system to a standard a501 and let that find the ICS updates when they come out.
Info I can give on my ICONIA is this.
Android Ver. :3.2.1
Kernal: 2.3.36.3+
Baseband: Cust:R3C01 Config:R4B01 Conf: R3C01 Protocol: R3B01 App:R3C01
Model No.: A501
ACER APN: 1.186-1
FLEX Version: 01_AAP_OPTUS
BUILD No.: Acer_A501_4.064.01_AAP_OPTUS
any info you can give to shed some light on this would be nice!
Cheers all!
Shaun.

Well Shaun, I would guess when Optus decides to release your update, you will receive notification. "When" it will happen, is anybody's guess. But the updates will arrive via OTA.
(the "OPTUS" logo after Acer, is just the boot animation).
If your tablet is "locked" to OPTUS right now (insert a different Sim and see what happens), then it will probably will be locked to the network after OTA. This "locking" is in a different section on the tab, and is NOT effected by software installs. At least on the ATT models.
So, when they push ICS OTA, you will still be locked.
But like I said, turn off the tab, put a different brand Sim card, and start the tab. If you get prompted to enter a 16 digit code, you are locked to OPTUS.
Or, as in the case on one of my friends on Rogers, it said "registered on the network". So, see what happens. (although it shows APN for rogers, only because his network sim is a new company and isn't listed in APNS-conf)

the first thing I tried when I got my tab was a TELSTRA sim
it worked and i browsed a website to be sure
it's optus branded but not locked
YAY..
seriously...
YAY! haha

Great! Guess you're not locked to a specific network like ATT.
You'll get your ICS update eventually But don't worry, they only started pushing the 3.2.1 updates to the 501 users just recently.

are you a Master user here?
I would like to see a sticky for acer Updates and keeping it updated to see what gets what and when.
so if ICS is out in USA but not OZ.. then I can see hmmmmm we getting jibbed!
and I can start to look for a custom rom for my system hahaha

Mate we ALWAYS get the shaft for most things... At least Optus releases an OTA update in a "timely" manner, Telstra is a ***** for releasing ANYTHING new...
Have never stayed stock with them....

Define "Master User"
Have I modded roms? check
Have I brought tabs back from the brink of death? check
Will I flash anything I think is usable? check
Do I flash untested kernels? check
Have I ever bricked my tab? Nope (semi-bricked my Desire 2yrs ago in the old days, but recovered) Does that count?
Am I an Android programmer? Nope. I know enough to get in trouble. I am what you might call a "fry cook"
So, do I qualify for "Master User"?
If you are on a "stock" unbranded 501, you will receive updates directly from Acer. This means you will probably get them first. If you have a "branded" device, it will be up to the network provider to decide when to release them.
Considering there are no "official" updates to ICS for the 500 or 501, then no point in discussing it. It will come when it does.
We already have a thread in the Dev section pertaining to leaked updates and roms. Believe me, when the 501 gets an ICS update, I will personally be all over it like Monica on Bill Clinton. Heck, I'll go back to stock just to snag the update file

Thank you sir! (Justin Beiber??? Eeewwwwww....)
But I can say 1 thing. No problems. No revisions needed At least not something making a new rom for.
Just hope when it comes, I don't have the same issues as the 500 leak in the beginning We shall see...
What do they say? Leave the best for last?

501... proverbial "red headed stepchild"

Man you are lucky that your a501 is on 3.21.
I am one of those whose a501 was locked (to rogers) but has been unlocked for nearly 3 months (paid 25 to get it unlocked) as I'm a bell customer.
We are still on stock 3.2. Haven't seen or heard anything about any 3.21 update yet.
I use ics RC 4.2 for my i9000m and cm9 for my p1000m. I can't go back to GB. Hard to think that.
Can't wait til ics comes out though. Really loving it.

Froyo update - Virgin Canada

Any idea when its coming?
Maybe the question should be more like: "Will it be released in Canada"
i highly doubt it will be out before the generic htc froyo rom...so i want to de-brand and flash the generic rom...
can anyone recommend a good guide for flashing the generic froyo rom to our specific model virgin canada legend? thanks in advance...
Canadian carriers are pretty awful at releasing updates in a timely fashion. Hopefully Virgin will break the pattern. Just to give you an idea, the predecessor to our phone, the Hero, just got an update from Telus recently... to 2.1.
I contact HTC via email about the software update for Bell/Virgin HTC Legend and they tell me to ask it to Bell/Virgin. I sent an email to Bell without answer. If anybody gets an answer from them let us know!
There's another thread about this very topic at HowardForums (can't post the link due to new account restrictions).
But anyways, apparently one of the Virgin reps is "looking into it" .. maybe we'll get an answer there soon.
I have just gotten off the phone with Virgin mobile and HTC and told them that i have the 2.2 for my legend already installed and rooted all that fun stuff i got them to send me to tech support to get the APN settings for my baby and he also let me know that the 2.2 is in devlopment up there and will be released some time soon... no exact date but he's heard that they will be supporting it...also if they do release it OTA i think they may release a patch if you agree to the OTA you may loose root and possibly never be able to root again due to the new update.. Hope this was some help.

HTC legend Rooted 2.2 FroYo Virgin Mobile
@virginmobilecan tweeted that it would be mid January prior to the New Year, and they have been releasing Froyo for the other phones fairly early than they promised, I'm thinking tomorrow?

Out for Virgin, no clue about Bell.
EDIT: Yes, Bell got it too.

Finally got it yesterday. Apps2SD is a lifesaver.
Can't change lockscreen anymore, so that sort of bites. Other than that, Love the new live wallpapers. Haven't noticed any speed increases, but It's not like i've been looking for them or paying too much attention to load times.
So far i'm really happy with it. Voice commands, flashlight, etc. all nice features.
It's a shame they didn't add the 2.2 camera interface.
Is the new version comes with the Wifi hotspot ? Anyone with the new official update let us know?
Also i'm wondering if i flash mine with the new official update, whether i can still root ?
I would like to have the wifi hotspot... coz i heard with the official update they removed this functionality that normally comes with the unbranded OTA froyo.
Thanks

It is there. Just checked on my wife's Legend.
Generally, it has been a great upgrade. The only issues are that a couple apps have not been updated by their authors in a LONG time so they do not work well on 2.2 and that for some reason, the screen lock dots were set to only come on after 5 minutes of non-use. My wife had it set to immediate before so she was annoyed that that changed.
App 2 SD isn't the lifesaver I was hoping it was... I find the apps still take up some space on the main phone even after you move them to SD. Frustrating.

I'm a Rogers customer who purchased an HTC Legend from a VM customer. Contrary to what I was told by VM, I did receive the Froyo update (today) when I checked for it on my phone (it wasn't pushed).
It includes the wifi hotspot (YAY) and while it doesn't permit pushing all apps to the SD card, it has let me move most of them there, so I'm hoping the 'low space' messages are a thing of the past.
Can't say I notice a big speed boost, but the wireless tethering is big to me, as is the ability to move most apps to the SD card. Looking forward to better voice recognition too.
All the best and good luck with your phone!
Phone seems sluggish at times after my official froyo update... even have to reboot a few times when it becomes too sluggish... i've moved all movable apps to sd but some big ones can't be moved... like swype freaking 18MB and IGO 29MB...
sluggish like finger swiping the pictures from my alblum is really slow and the picture does not follow my finger unles i move it mm by mm and slowly...
anyone experienced that?
A friend of mine on Bell's Froyo has that constantly. A hard reset fixed it though.
you should notice that froyo is much faster than stock eclair...its not subtle at all
They offered me a discount on my monthly bill for 3 months because of the mess up on android 2.2, but when I got the bill, it was still the same amount...
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
Oh ho ho, they do that sometimes as a joke. They treat us like chickens...
Just call customer service and demand a 6 month adjustment, instead.
Or, before you demand such a thing, check your account's notes to see if it will be added on to the next bill. Bell and Virgin operates on advanced billing.

Nothing that isn't openly available on the web. Apparently HTC had a newsletter which explicitly stated that Froyo for Slide would be pushed as an OTA by T-Mobile in December. So I made this post to keep myself informed... most people will come here and make a post, which I'll see via email ASAP.
I have a question. for those that are rooted and are using a custom ROM, will an OTA notification even pop up?

Well that's going to depend on which ROM they are using. Something like CR_MOD and Slidemeroot *will* receive the notification to update. Others, like CyanogenMod Rom's will not since they are missing the APN setting and a few other prerequisites for update notifications. I haven't tried but will see if I add the FOTA APN maybe I'll get the notification (unless some one knows that won't work).

That's the thing, the Slidemeroot ROM will receive OTA messages from T-Mobile that are bogus and will unroot your phone. This is why I do not want any Slidemeroot users to post that they have an update available.
well i have CM6.1 on here. But i suppose once the new OTA for froyo comes out, we'll be able to get some true slide Froyo ROMs out, so it won't be a big deal if i can't get the OTA to my phone anyway lol.
unrooted~
I unrooted anticipating Froyo cause all I kept reading was DECEMBER 15th. and well thats only for the MT3G not the slide. Damn misinformed Tmobile reps. putting out bad info that gets spread like wildfire on the web.
So I HTC, got the number from Tmo Rep. Talked to Tech Support there and the update that just went out is only for MyTouch 3G, NOT THE SLIDE. HTC is waiting for TMOBILE to ask for the Update for the slide, which they have NOT. Then HTC makes it and test it, get payment and approval from Tmobile and then get the okay to pust the update to customers. So Tmobile starts the update ball rolling and then has to push it out after HTC/Android is done with it. The information can't be much more official than that. Hope this clears everything up for anyone who can't get proper answers to their questions. Not questions about a phone we don't have.

Recent article from Tmonews:
With news of the myTouch 3G LE and Fender editions prepping to receive their Android 2.2 update, plenty of myTouch Slide customers are left wondering when is their turn. Well the good news it’s being worked on, the bad news is we’re hearing exactly what kind of trouble is delaying the update. Apparently there are two problems holding up the public release:
1) Wi-Fi calling doesn’t work 100% of the time, we’re not sure what that means, if calls are dropping or not starting at all on Wi-Fi but we know it’s holding up release.
2) The OTA update is right now being directed to the wrong partition, which doesn’t have enough memory to process the update.
We received word that HTC is aware of both of these problems and is actively working on a fix. No release date time frame was given but as soon as we hear more, we’ll drop the news right away!

Acer_A500_1.141.01_EMEA_GEN3 and Honeycomb 3.1

Anyone receive the new Honeycomb 3.1 update yet OTA? officially?
I'm from South Africa and am unsure if my device can even detect the update (maybe the incremental 3.0.1 update damaged my OTA updates) or if it hasn't beeen released yet.
I also have 1.141.01_EMEA_GEN3 and am still waiting for the OTA. I've been searching for links all over to the official OTA link, but can't find it anywhere. I'm in the netherlands ( although i'm also a south african : )
Same here, no 3.1 OTA yet ... living in Belgium but bought the Iconia in Holland.
thanks
thanks for the reply guys at least I know I'm not alone.
Looks like our version is the EU release so it will definitly get the update.

My manufacture date is April 2011. What's ur manufacture date?
No idea, how can i tell? Doesn't say anything in the menus about manufacture date. I bought it in May, and since they were only around a few weeks, i'm guessing it was also April.
See back of box on barcode sticker. Also states operated countries.
Also April 2011 ... and bottom right it shows AEB NL
Marcher
i'll have to dig up my box
I have a 1.141.01_EMEA_GEN3 manually updated from 1.105.01 and still not getting OTA to 3.1.
Offtopic.
Hope you can help me to solve a riddle in my mind my device label in the back of the box has:
A500-10S16m (top right corner, I think is model number)
Part No. XE.H60PN.004
Countries: PA MX
And had a stock build: Acer_A500_1.105.01_EMEA_GEN3
I'm starting to think that out there are at least two different models of A500 that uses EMEA_GEN3 build, that explains why some of us had the "wifi error" when manually upgraded to 1.141.01.
Please if you are willing to share with us your model number part number and countries, PM me, or post it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1155664
So i tried out the download link for our firmware, linked to in:

And it works great! even with everything 100% stock. Of course usual disclaimers apply, fear the wifi bug, cookie monster and borg, etc.
Mine is:
A500-10S32
Part No :XE.H6LEN.004
Mfg Date: May 2011
operated countries :AT, BE, CY, CZ, DK, EE, FI, FR, DE, GR, HU, IE, IT, LV, LT, LY, MT, NL, PL, PT, SK, SI, ES, SE, GB, IS, LI, NO, CH, BG, RO, TR.
stock build: Acer_A500_1.105.01_EMEA_GEN3
Not receive update yet

Any news folks? I still have mine 1.141.01_EMEA_GEN3 not updated...
Yeah, I'm also not getting anything, also 1.141.01_EMEA_GEN3. I live in South Africa and bought the tablet here.
I'm getting pretty pissed off with Acer. Does anyone know the country update schedule?
There will be an update by the end of this month. That's what Acer Poland claims. For EMEA users of course.
Can't get any more end monthish than now... Still no update here. I start loosing temper especially that my desire z performes better with some webcasts than iconia ...
This is getting very annoying. Some other devices is getting 3.2 already and we still struggling to get 3.1. Only reply Im getting from the guys at Acer is that it takes time to modify and test the new version ..... WTF?!
If I knew this was gonna be the issue, I might rather have gone for something like the ASUS. Anyways .... just ranting a bit

I've also got my a500 in MX and updated to 4.010.38_ COM_GEN1 and it works great. Never had any ota before and after.

Wait for it. There are many people in many different parts of the world that haven't received the OTA update as of yet.
If you really want it now, you can get the file and manually update from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
But remember, once you update to 3.2 you have no root, and as of yet there is no way to root 3.2 on our tablet.
maybe in your area is still on process of putting an update.
I got my 3rd update last night and now, 3.2 (my first update was 3.1 from original 3.01 and I don't know why 8 have to update again to 3.1 and now, the latest over OTA.
I'm here in Algeria and my A500 was bought in Houston last 27th July this year.
If your in the U.S. I don't think its been released yet for us. I know I'll be one of the first batch of people sense I got my tab in April so until then I'll make a thread if there isn't one yet for the states. I know the release by VID number which I'm sure also coincieds to the manufacturing date, and the push process is long, even when they pushed that small. 13 update in June I think, I still see people posting they just got that update in august.

I'm in Aus with an A501 - so I'm guessing no news yet on 3.2 for us? 3G dropouts (occasional) are the big thing I'm looking forward to. WiFi dropouts are occasional only. Also I heard rumour that video (720p) playback is improved? I.E less of a need to handbrake everything!

When did you buy your tab?
Greetings, I am near San Francisco CA. I purchased my A500 about 12 days ago. When I pulled it from the box the first time it did 2 updates. One update to 3.1 and the next update took me to Acer_A500_4.010.13_COM_GEN2. I was stuck at that for the next 12 days. Every day about 10 times a day I would hit the update button hoping for the OTA to 3.2. It never came. Today I thought I would force update it. Right before I tried the force update to Acer_A500_4.010.38_COM_GEN1 I hit update one more time thinking I should try it before I did a force update. The update still did not come. I then updated to Acer_A500_4.010.38_COM_GEN1 using the link provided in XDA forum topic '[OTA] Full Package and Update'. The second the update finished I hit the about>update button again and it instantly got the OTA download to 3.2. I now have 3.2 installed. Not sure I would have ever got the update from Acer_A500_4.010.13_COM_GEN2. I think once you update to the .38 you can then update to OTA 3.2 .
That's because .38 Gen 1 is for another region that has been released for. The update for .13 Gen 2 will come soon enough for the U.S. we just got to wait a bit, but they will eventually make a release build for us without having to custom rom update.
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
Then why do so many people in the USA have .38 when they have never installed anything custom? The a500 I took back to the store for poor build quality was .38 and it was purchased in San Francisco CA. Not sure how letting acer install a stock OTA is considered custom.
Same here, 6 A500 tabs in tha house. 3 have had the update, other 3 didn't receive anything. All 6 are from the same batch.
Acer really ****ed it up this time
I have the wifi only version, and have not received the OTA update. Is it possible that the ones that have updated have the mobile wireless option?
I have a Gen2, no update yet. I am hoping the new update fixes wifi? Or well, makes it faster, I have Comcast 15-20mbps, and get a measly 5mbps when I run a wifi test.

Do a factory reset from the Settings menu and they WILL receive the update. Back up any important data before doing this though as wil will lose it.

Done that already, no update yet
It depends on servers
I asked someone on acer, and they answered me that it depends on the servers, and because it's a worldwide process it can take some time to get in some countries. For example here in Mexico there are some users getting 3.1 upgrades, when in some other countries there have been 3.2 upgrades.
It's kind of weird but that's how this thing works. It's in stages. So be patient, and wait for it.

Hopefully you didn't pay Mexican pricing for one. Electronics are at a massive premium here(I'm stuck here for the time being unfortunately)

ICS in USA

Hi all, just got an international note on ebay from a woman in Texas. Phone had never been activated. Set it up on Straight Talk and it has an official ICS update that it asked me to install. Lucky me!

I love it when people post totally misleading threads :roll eyes:
Does anyone know the possible timeframe for EUX's ICS rollout? I'm in the US and don't want to root. The waiting is killing me.

Not sure how it is misleading. I turned it on and it said there was an update. Not sure why mine only would get the update in the USA. Im not rooted nor do I have any special ROMS.

You do realise that the ICS update availability is based on the actual firmware on the phone regardless of your physical location right? You could be in Iraq, China, Africa, etc, and still be able to receive the same exact update. That means your phone's origin region has ICS released already (check out the ICS released list on the forum). Just because you bought the phone from in the USA doesn't necessarily make it a USA phone.

That is your csc, your phones csc. You can change it but would likely have to change rom to stock from that country to getvthe csc you want. Plus you will get data wiped and doesnt always gaurantee upgradability, sometime may need to try different stockroms from that cscs in order to upgrade throught ota and or kies. Tedious proces.
On that note, samsung should have smartified their multi country rollouts. Less roms to maintain, etc. This is ridiculious lmao
