I am fairly sure that Voodoo color and the Glitch screen modifications fried my screen this weekend. This is just a warning that full brightness with modified firmware may possibly physically damage your phone.
Process for what killed mine:
Installed CM7.2 RC
Installed Glitch 13.1
Installed Voodoo Control Plus
Set color profile to the more vivid one (don't remember which)
Set auto brightness, 60 screen for dark, 190 for bright setting
Installed QuickPic
Set option for "Max brightness when viewing"
View a 2 bit color image (pure white, pure black). Noticed wavy lines in the white sections. Double checked that I was not over clocked, or undervolted, all factory settings.
Return to viewing image again at full brightness, holding up to eyes inspecting it, screen turns itself off. Never to turn on again. Phone boots, receives calls, everything is functional except no life from the screen. Odin back to stock worked fine, but screen still dead.
Posted in General because the warning scared me. *shrug* Move if needed please.
I farted that day. I think that had as much to do with your screen dying as anything you just mentioned.

Hey guys, I have an issue with my screen slightly flickering when it is woken up by pressing the power button then put back to sleep.
I've had this issue ever since I've switched to ICS (tried multiple ICS roms, including ASOP built ones and Stock).
I have an i9020a, so I'm not sure if its attributed to this specific model. EDIT* apparently it affects other models as well based upon the information in the forum link at the bottom of this post**
Currently I'm not using any voodoo controls to adjust colors.
How to reproduce:
1. Press power button to put screen to sleep.
2. Press power button to wake screen up.
3. Press power button again to put screen to sleep. At this point when the screen goes to sleep you should see a slight flicker, sometimes hard to see so look closely, but the lockscreen time and unlock button will become visible for a second and then the screen will go black.
4. Repeat if it doesn't occur the first time, because i notice it happens the majority of time but not always.
Hopefully someone else can reproduce this and then maybe we can find a way to fix it. Thanks guys.
EDIT** Found some more information on this bug:
-Video of problem (more drastic than mine, however same issue) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRub7rhwiZ0&feature=youtu.be

I'm currently using matrix kernel 14.5.....not the voodoo colors one.....and it still have the problem if I pay close attention (it's not as bad as that video, very had to see, but still there nonetheless). FYI it's not the green screen flicker; could be related, but it happens on the OTA ICS as well.
On Steve Garon's kernel the flicker isn't noticeable at all when brightness is set anywhere higher than lowest brightness. Even when on lowest brightness settings, the flicker is less noticeable when compared to the other kernels I've used.
The trade-off though for this is voodoo colors not being able to be tweaked. Although, the kernel includes tweaked color settings that get rid of the stock warm coloring.

Hopefully this will get fixed in the next version of ics because although it is a small issue, I like perfection

I want to say its a driver issue. But I'm not sure. My brother and I both have stock unrooted on i9020T's and it happens to us. I was reading on the cyanogenmod blog that Google made ics so different that they need to rewrite all the drivers. Whether that's the case for this bug is just my hunch.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I've noticed this also, not sure about the stock kernal. Im using matrix 15.5 I believe. Must have... perfection...
So as ive read it there is no fix currently. Does this happen on the stock kernal? Or other kernals?
Edit: Setting back gamma to 2.3.3 seems to have solved this if nothing is running in the background when you lock. IE; Live Wallpaper/Application Sitting on Screen when Locking. If its just straight basic wallpaper. Its ok.
The only Rom I've seen that doesn't have the screen flicker is Pete's nightly 31 I guess he fixed it I've flashed more than 10 different Roms & all had screen flicker but not Pete's nightly 31!!!
Try it out don't flash any custom kernel no screen flicker don't forget to hit the thanks button if I've helped you!

I like to read at night in dark room, and I find that even on lowest brightness screen is to bright.
I am stock rooted and unlocked, I tried adjbrightness (I use it on my gNex) but it must not be supporting Jelly Bean yet.
Any thoughts? I miss Adjbrightness

I use ScreenDim on a Galaxy Tab 7 Plus and on a Kindle Fire, and it works very well. My Nexus 7 doesn't arrive til later today, so I can't guarantee it will work, but the developer says it works on Jellybean. I like the fact that this app has presets which allow you to easily vary brightness and contrast as lighting conditions change. There is a trial version available. In summation, I recommend this app!
ETA: This app makes it possible to lower brightness below what the device would normally allow, by combining the brightness and contrast adjustments.

That will only make the colors/whites darker since it just draws a semitransparent black "sheet" on top of everything. The backlight will be just as strong.
Edit: sorry maybe screen dim does adjust the backlight... maybe I'm thinking of a different app.
OP, you could try rootdim from the play store, as it uses root to lower the backlight more. Not sure if it works wit the 7.
Or changes can be done in the kernel source.

This app has two modes, one which lowers actual brightness, and one which adds a the semitransparent overlay you mention. You can use either or combine them to achieve lower light levels. IIRC, according to the developer, the one which lowers brightness saves battery, while the 'gray sheet' mode does not.
Anyway, since there is a trial version available the op could see if it works.
Previously, I tried another app which only had the semitransparent overlay, and did not find it as effective.
I had the same issue. I've used Screen Filter previously. Now I'm using Elixer 2 screen filter toggle on a widget. Both work great and are free.
Check out RootDim. I'm not sure it's compatible with JB yet since I'm without an N7 for now, but if so, give it a shot. I tried it on my Bionic and it did the job nicely. I eventually uninstalled it because it messed with the capacitive button backlights, but obviously that's not an issue for the N7.

RootDim works, Thanks a bunch. I like Adjbrightness, but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work
I wish the "auto-brightness" on all devices worked like it does on the Note 10.1!
Like most other Android devices, the Note 10.1 has an "Auto Brightness" option. However, unlike most other Android devices (in my experience so-far), you can further tweak the brightness even when "Auto Brightness" is enabled, effectively adjusting the sensitivity of the auto-brightness mechanism.
Try it in a very dark room. With "Auto brightness" ticked in the pop-up notification panel, the screen should be relatively dark. Move the slider all the way to the right, and it will add a little bit of extra brightness, but still be quite dark. Move it all the way to the left, and it will subtract a bit of brightness, making it even more dark - even though Auto Brightness is still selected and operational.
Some have said suggested before that doing this adjusts a "maximum brightness". This is not the case (as illustrated by what happened in a darkened room). Instead, this adds a little or subtracts a little from the brightness that would be determined by the auto brightness setting.
i have a note10.1 and galaxy s3, auto brightness both work as you say with the newest firmware.
though the s3 was like other android devices, in recent jb stock roms it changed.
so i guess all samsung devices will have such autobrightness,if a new stock rom comes.actually it just works as what ios autobrightness do.

yep, I love the "Manual Auto-Brightness" feature!! ALL ROMS should have this!!

Well, my experience is the same as others -- it's either auto or manual. I don't know how the "auto-manual" can be enabled. I am assuming they are describing something similar to iOS where you adjust the brightness slider, and the auto-adjustment is relative to that. I find the auto-brightness a bit too dark for my taste, but don't want to keep it at top brightness non-stop. So I use Lux Auto Brightness (I opted for the free app) and have been happy with the results.
Hmm.... I'm on the leaked JB rom (Dr. Akrim version). I never spent time with stock ICS so not sure if this is the difference.
On this ROM, the Auto check box stays on as you move the slider.

This probably works only on JB.
It does not work on stock ICS for me
And ditto about auto brightness being too dark.
I usually have to turn it off.

I can adjust the slider while auto is on, but there is no difference when i slide it.
I´m on ICS, and Samsung had better named it: Auto Darkness
The way it is, it is completely useless.

Very true. It is undoubtedly the best implementation of auto brightness. I'm loving it.
I think I might now know what issue you might have.
Maybe you covered the the top bezel, the one opposite of the samsung logo. If you do this then the light sensor thinks you're in a dark room and reduces the brightness to almost the lowest level.
Sent from my GT-N8010 using xda app-developers app
i think the auto brightness is ALWAYS just a teeny bit too dark, even if its slided all the way to the right. I would love it if i could "slide it a little more to the right", that the slider was a little more sensitive, allowing more tweaking on the auto levels.

I haven´t covered the sensor.
Auto is ALWAYS too dark for me.
When I drag slider, auto gets turned off
I found out why it was always too dark. I had energy mode switched on.
I got my Galaxy S4 yesterday and noticed even after i turned auto brightness off, Set my screen to dynamic, the screen still changes brightness levels when entering the Chrome web browser (gets dimmer), playing some video games (screen get brighter) and other various tasks.
I am not a noob, I've gone through the phones settings for each app and cannot find a fix, do you guys notice your phones doing the same thing?? I might be a slight change in brightness level but non the less i like my screen extremely bright this is just my preference.
Any thoughts, ideas, tweaks or feedback on how to resolve this issue??

The only time I've seen this happen since I've gotten the device is when the battery dropped below 5%, and it automatically adjusted the brightness to seemingly the lowest it could go, and stuck until I charged it to full again.
I blame it on Samsung's stockware.
maybe this is why i couldnt get the phone to look as bright as my note 2. i was using the browser and cnn.com to compare.. my note 2 screen was brighter with both phones brightness on max.

Just throwing this out there...the screen does dim about 10 seconds before the screen times out and turns off...even if you have automatic brightness disabled.
Let's say you have a 1 minute timeout:
Screen on
50 seconds later screen dims
10 seconds later screen turns off
Just putting that out there in case - it is confusing to some.
Dude I'm having the same problem, yeah it's a small dim but it's freaking annoying cuz I have mine at full brightness all the time. I have the tmobile galaxy s4. I tried changing the screen mode and it still happens

I've noticed it too. Just seems like typical dynamic contrast behavior. Though I don't understand why on earth you'd need it on a screen with perfect blacks.

I'm sure it has to do with preventing burn in. You probably already know this, but in the right conditions, the Auto brightness setting can get over 30% brighter than manually maxing the slider. Hopefully, it's something that can be unlocked at some point.

Maybe the power saving mode is manipulating it?

Its the power saving option. Its the same in s3. Go to powrr saving settjngs and uncheck the auto dim or auto brightness or something like that. It happens when power saving is on. I cant remember the exact optin coz im using custom rom on my s3.

This happened in the S4s I used in the store as well. Manual brightness, and auto screen adjust disabled, power save off. Opening certain apps like chrome and the stock browser causes the screen to dim a bit. Nothing I found prevented this behavior. It's annoying since I already find the screen to be a bit dim.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
Notice this as well, super annoying. I've disabled power saving, auto screen adjust, etc. and even non-dynamic modes do it.
Hopefully this gets fixed by kernel mods in the future
Same problem, even with brightness max with auto off, decent charge, and off power saver. Very annoying
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
Its built into the Snapdragon, its called BRITE and seems works independantly of the auto screen tuning that the S4 has. The HTC One has it and its much more intrusive. I wrote a long winded post about it in the HTC One forums. You have to wait for devs to come out with kernels to disable it, much like they did for the Tegra 3
The HTC screen is bright enough that it doesn't matter. Samsung phones need to be at max brightness to be any good.

Just an FYI, if you put the screen on auto brightness, it reaches a higher maximum brightness outdoors as apposed to the slider. Samsung did this to keep the screen from overheating when set to max all the time.
I want full brightness indoors too.

I see. If you have the slider on max all the time, i think the screen will just dim eventually because of heat. Might want to stay away from the S4 then cus you might have screen problems down the line :/
If you havent go to settings display screen mode and use something other than adapt display. No more adjusting.
