Hey guys, I have an issue with my screen slightly flickering when it is woken up by pressing the power button then put back to sleep.
I've had this issue ever since I've switched to ICS (tried multiple ICS roms, including ASOP built ones and Stock).
I have an i9020a, so I'm not sure if its attributed to this specific model. EDIT* apparently it affects other models as well based upon the information in the forum link at the bottom of this post**
Currently I'm not using any voodoo controls to adjust colors.
How to reproduce:
1. Press power button to put screen to sleep.
2. Press power button to wake screen up.
3. Press power button again to put screen to sleep. At this point when the screen goes to sleep you should see a slight flicker, sometimes hard to see so look closely, but the lockscreen time and unlock button will become visible for a second and then the screen will go black.
4. Repeat if it doesn't occur the first time, because i notice it happens the majority of time but not always.
Hopefully someone else can reproduce this and then maybe we can find a way to fix it. Thanks guys.
EDIT** Found some more information on this bug:

I'm currently using matrix kernel 14.5.....not the voodoo colors one.....and it still have the problem if I pay close attention (it's not as bad as that video, very had to see, but still there nonetheless). FYI it's not the green screen flicker; could be related, but it happens on the OTA ICS as well.
On Steve Garon's kernel the flicker isn't noticeable at all when brightness is set anywhere higher than lowest brightness. Even when on lowest brightness settings, the flicker is less noticeable when compared to the other kernels I've used.
The trade-off though for this is voodoo colors not being able to be tweaked. Although, the kernel includes tweaked color settings that get rid of the stock warm coloring.

Hopefully this will get fixed in the next version of ics because although it is a small issue, I like perfection

I want to say its a driver issue. But I'm not sure. My brother and I both have stock unrooted on i9020T's and it happens to us. I was reading on the cyanogenmod blog that Google made ics so different that they need to rewrite all the drivers. Whether that's the case for this bug is just my hunch.

I've noticed this also, not sure about the stock kernal. Im using matrix 15.5 I believe. Must have... perfection...
So as ive read it there is no fix currently. Does this happen on the stock kernal? Or other kernals?
Edit: Setting back gamma to 2.3.3 seems to have solved this if nothing is running in the background when you lock. IE; Live Wallpaper/Application Sitting on Screen when Locking. If its just straight basic wallpaper. Its ok.
The only Rom I've seen that doesn't have the screen flicker is Pete's nightly 31 I guess he fixed it I've flashed more than 10 different Roms & all had screen flicker but not Pete's nightly 31!!!
Try it out don't flash any custom kernel no screen flicker don't forget to hit the thanks button if I've helped you!

It has become quite clear that there is a small unlucky group of us that experience touch screen unresponsiveness at various times, mostly on froyo roms.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961042
Clearly I realize there are other threads that have discussed this in the past. I would like to find out just how common this problem really is and what we can do to fix it.
My personal experience: My screen works almost flawlessly on any eclair rom. Every froyo rom I have flashed (almost all the super cleans, vanilla AOSP, MIUI etc) I will experience unresponsive spots on the touch screen. Typically it starts in the lower left 1/4 then spreads to the entire screen. A brief lock and unlock of the phone usually gets it working again, only to return a few moments later. When my factory Samsung charger is plugged in the screen is completely useless.
Originally I thought it was a kernel problem but it still happens on the new OE released EC10 kernel as well as on the AOSP built ones. I think it is a hardware problem on certain phones. Why only froro? I have no idea.
Please participate in my survey so we can figure out how bad this really is.
I have also have the screen responsiveness issues. The middle of the screen becomes unresponsive and I have to lock and unlock to get the screen to work. This is only an issue with froyo ROMs. My wife has a fascinate and even though I flashed her phone the same way, she never has had screen responsiveness issues.

Excellent information, same method different results. Only difference, the phones themselves.
So far, my Fascinate is running SC 2.9. 2 with absolutely no problems. Did it take a while for those symptoms to start or was it right away?

It always happened right away (sometimes within a few hours). I should point out this is not developer related. I have the same problems on fully bloated stock roms. I should have mentioned that in the op.
If you Odin back to stock DI01, does it still happen? If so, it sounds like a hardware defect. I, for one, have never seen any screen responsiveness issues at all on my phone, no matter which kernel or rom I'm on.

I am having the same issue. Mine is most often around the letters "s" and "k" and it seems intermittent. I was running DJ05 up until a few weeks ago. Then I flashed an EB01 kernel with DarkRevenge, and started to notice this problem. No issues when running DJ05.

Yes, I tried this too. Along with various cocktails of wiping and clearing cache's, no change.
*When I return to any eclair rom it works fine, again why only with froyo??
Just flashed JT's new EC10 kernel and so far no screen responsiveness issues (8+ hours), I'll keep you posted.
Update: my screen responsiveness issues have come back.

I had this problem on some versions of SC 2.8 and at first with 2.9, but now on SC 2.9.2 I haven't had it.
Mine was mostly around letters O, I, N, K, but also sometimes E, R, A, and S. It usually happened after I had already pressed the letter. Take for example this message "I ran into...." I could type the letter I to start, but when I came to it again, it wouldn't register. Same with the letter N.
I had this happen after flashing certain themes. If I ran the ROM themeless, it wouldn't happen.
Factory wiped, ROM (2.9.2) refreshed, and have been running Nitsuj's gb theme with no probs for a few days now.

GizmoDroid's CWM fix has stopped my screen resposiveness issues. It's worth a shot. I'm currently running Superclean 2.9.2 voodoo with EB01 radio.

I also have the issue. Sometimes it will happen on the lock screen stopping me from unlocking the phone. Same fix though. Had it on all SC roms, AOSP and blackhole.

Just did the whole process twice, no change. . . It always seems to be okay at first but a little while later it rears it's ugly head. While in portrait mode if you bisect the phone vertically it is the right hand side that goes dead, the left works fine.

Ditto on mine. After a while it becomes so bad that it happens everytime after it goes to sleep by itself. I would have to reboot to keep it going ok for awhile.

Yep same thing here. Not sure when it started but it was most prominent with maybe SC2.8 I think.
It seemed to go away with SC 2.9, but it happens ever now and then.
Always the right side of the screen, simply turn the screen on/off to fix.
Download Advanced Test Card from the market. Give it a try.

I recently became a big fan of the galaxy tab and purchased two for my family and talked another two of my friends into getting them. We've all noticed an issue with the touch screen AFTER updating to the overcome firmware (both 1.6 and 2.3).
I've done tests with the stock at&t firmware and then also after flashing to overcome. Seems there is something in the kernel that changes the sensitivity of the screen so that it over-registers the touch.
Let me say that I'm aware how unscientific my test is but I've done it so many times on different tabs that the results that I've seen is very consistent. You can try also to see if your tab has the same issue.
Download the app called Sketcher from the market and select the Simple brush. Draw horizontal lines starting from the top down. With the overcome kernel, the lines are extremely jagged especially on the left side. On the at&t stock rom, the lines are almost perfectly smooth.
This is noticeable through daily use too. Just hold you finger down (preferably on the left side) on the stock browser and you'll see that the screen twitches.
I wasn't sure where to post this but hopefully one of the rom developers can take a look into this.
Please see attached pictures to get an idea of what I'm talking about.
There's probably a way to adjust the sensitivity but I don't see any apps in the market that allow this.
Theres an app in the market call, touch screen sensitivity booster (something like that) only problem is, that you need to apply the "settings" every reboot.
The problem here is that the screen is too sensitive. Actually I'm not sure if it's a sensitivity issue or something else but it is definitely a widespread problem that affects most if not all tabs running certain custom roms.
No need for custom rom with stock gingerbread, in my opinion. When I was on froyo I tried the overcome kernel, videos on native player was choppy at times. I didn't have this issue with stock kernel. So now I stick with stock rom untill we have a fully working cyanogenmod.

Are you sure we will have it?
I am fairly sure that Voodoo color and the Glitch screen modifications fried my screen this weekend. This is just a warning that full brightness with modified firmware may possibly physically damage your phone.
Process for what killed mine:
Installed CM7.2 RC
Installed Glitch 13.1
Installed Voodoo Control Plus
Set color profile to the more vivid one (don't remember which)
Set auto brightness, 60 screen for dark, 190 for bright setting
Installed QuickPic
Set option for "Max brightness when viewing"
View a 2 bit color image (pure white, pure black). Noticed wavy lines in the white sections. Double checked that I was not over clocked, or undervolted, all factory settings.
Return to viewing image again at full brightness, holding up to eyes inspecting it, screen turns itself off. Never to turn on again. Phone boots, receives calls, everything is functional except no life from the screen. Odin back to stock worked fine, but screen still dead.
Posted in General because the warning scared me. *shrug* Move if needed please.
I farted that day. I think that had as much to do with your screen dying as anything you just mentioned.

Hello. Haven't found this one answered yet. Can TF101 be set to dim screen before it times out and screenlocks? This would give you a warning to touch the screen before it shuts off and locks. Just updated to stock ics and can't find a setting nor 3rd party utility to do this. My Galaxy S2 does what i am wanting to accomplish. Isn't this a standard option on Android phones and pads? Thanks!
Mine does it, running Team Eos ROM. Screen dim slightly a few seconds before it shut off.
I'm stock ICS and mine dims slightly before also
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
Doesn't ALL the TF's do this?? Mine sure does.
yeah the TF does dim just before it screen locks.....unless you have the screen brightness on the lowest setting, in which case of course theres no dimming before lock.
Isn't this an Android feature? My G2X on an ICS rom dims, it's how I know I need to touch the screen to keep it on.
Does anyone else have this problem with their nexus 7? I just got my nexus 7 today but I noticed that the backlight seems to flicker randomly
It doesn't look like much in the video but it is very noticeable and gets annoying when you're reading an ebook like i was.. Here's a video showing the problem.(It's near the end)
VIDEO LINK: h**p://db.tt/28eD0NLk (It happens around 9 second in) (change ** into tt)
For whatever reason this forum would not post a video link to show the problem.. for those who wants to know what it looks like please PM me..
But basically the screen flickers randomly ..
Is this a software problem? Should I go back and get it exchanged?

I havn't tried it yet..do we know if it's a hardware problem or software?
I just got it today so I can still return it if it turns out to be hardware
We really dunno at this point, but we are speculating software since both HTC One X and TF300 had similar problems and were fixed with firmware updates. Also someone switched it three times and all of them had this issue. Also try to run the screen in a pitch black room and tell me if the screen flicker is there. I may have a theory but need some other people to see if their units are behaving the same way as mine.
You can still post the link when you alter it a bit, insert a few *** into it, for example.
I turned mine on as soon as I got hold of it, no flicker, managed to go through and set up things, powered off and left to charged.
Coming back to it the screen would appear to turn on and off randomly, I thought it could be an app controlling a proximity sensor (I have one on my phone and I was EXTREMELY tired!), when I took it into the light there was no change.
I found that shaking it would help it flicker on and off at all intervals but didn't fix it. In the end I just started pushing random areas on the back, just before the issue went away I pressed around the bottom left quarter of mine and haven't had an issue since!
Glad I wasn't the only one with the problem though and would love to actually find out what it was.
Hope this helps!

Try this video,

it is using google map and you can see the constant flickering.. It doesn't look very severe in the video but it is actually very noticeable and annoying
I have the same issue with mine. It only seems noticeable when I have the brightness set to the lowest setting and on a page that is predominately white. I don't think it's the proximity sensor though, because it happens both when I set it manually to the lowest setting and when I'm in the dark and the tablet sets the brightness all the way down itself. Hope the next update fixed this, because it's really annoying!

I first noticed this flicker in a darkened room, so yes, it is definitely something going on. I'll try disabling auto-brightness to see if that matters.

I can attest that the flicker is ever present in a pitch black room as well.

There are a few videos on youtube, but i cant post links but if you do a search you can find it
I noticed a flickering in chrome yesterday. But only in chrome and only while the page is rendering after it fully renders no more flickering.
Everyone turn off wifi and I guarantee it will go away. It happens when using wifi which makes it hard to believe that a software update can fix it.
