Interesting move by Google. I like it!

There's some good apps for. 49ยข I recommend Swift Key
Sent from my MB860 CM7 7.2 20FEB 1.0 GHz
eeh... i still prefer Swype... mostly cause it's free.
And i think the new name is just plain odd. Sounds like something Sony might have an issue with, honestly.
I don't like it either. I will always call it the market. No chance I'll ask somebody "Hey did you download that from Play?"
I've downloaded the apk for the update but it won't install, it just fails, have installed it on another device with no issues, any ideas?
just wait for it. mine just updated now.
Mine is not updated yet but don't like the name.
Makes no sense, still not as dumb as the NEW IPAD.
Having some issues with new Play with the new MIUI ICS build. Does not let load some apps that it did before. Probably an issue with MIUI but may be new market. Good deal on books and apps this week.
Can't install the apk, shows "application not installed."
I'm on NottachTrix v1.2.8, anyone can install the apk?
Mine updated yesterday afternoon. I ended up deleting all market updates to trouble shoot something, and then it only updated back to 3.4.4.
They may have pulled the update because it was removing the market link from people's home screen. I'm sure there are a handful of people looking through their apps for the market app, and ignoring the weird little google play icon.
i casually sleep walked through the "upgrade"
it's the exact same thing, just count how many times the work "play" occurs on the start page
Ya they do have a lot of good deals going on right now, but over all i think its is the exact same market with a crappy name and icon. Id say untill i see a major change it a dumb move. they are marketing the whole switch as a place to get movies books music and apps. but we have always been able to et that there lol
I don't like the new "Play" name and I don't like the new icon, but hey, Google didn't ask me.
Also supposed to be version 3.4.7 out there to fix the "Market" link in the upper right corner of the App drawer (it doesn't work on 3.4.6), but my Atrix hasn't received "the fix" yet.

I had to force the update to 3.4.7. What I did was I went into manage apps, clicked on Google Play Store, and uninstalled updates. It reverted me back to the old market. I then cleared data and loaded the market. After accepting the terms I exited the market and waited a couple of minutes and opened it again. It then updated me to the Google Play Store again, but this time it was version 3.4.7. If that doesn't work for you can grab the apk and install it manually. Here is the link:

I don't even get why Google even did this. Google Play? It just sounds stupid. Android Market was a perfect name.

Agreed. Android Market had widespread name recognition, and Google is throwing it away in favor of a name that makes it sound like a gaming site. I get that they want to consolidate everything into a one-stop-shopping site, but did they have to pull a New Coke to do it? They could've renamed it to something like "Google Market"; that would have kept the familiar "Market" name while widening its scope beyond Android. But then, that would have made too much frickin' sense.
I will say this Google is not one usually that makes a real dumb or big move like this with out haveing some other intent in the works. so maybe this move will seem more logical in the coming moths and they will have some big change or anouncement that involves google play
I do agree the name sound weird but I believe its a larger move to unify a number of services under one name. I have checked the chrome app sec but I'm pretty sure the chrome web store number of ply apps so you can view your content on your computer or your phone

Oh, no question, and I think it's a good idea. The problem I have is that it's a bad name. It's a name that makes you think of a place for games, not for downloading apps and media. "Google Market" would have accomplished this goal. "Google Play Store" makes it sound like the online equivalent of GameStop. Google rarely makes missteps, but when it does, it goes all in.

Well first, the new Market isn't on our Nexus S yet (officially), that's fine, it's just a UI update pretty much.
Now more seriously and more annoying, Google pushed out 2.3.1, that's great! BUT:
Whether you're rooted or not, there are missing apps on the Market because of 2.3.1
Some of the apps I use that I can no longer download from the Market are:
aFile, Fandango Movies, NYTimes for Android, PayPal, FiOS Mobile Remote
These are big apps, no reason they shouldn't be available.
I guess the issue is Google needs to input/enter/update their Market to "support" the new build of 2.3.1. ARE YOU F'ING SERIOUS? You just pushed the damn thing and don't remember to update your Market with the new build??
GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER GOOGLE! This is frustrating!
EDIT: ALL Copy Protected Apps do NOT show up in the Market on Android 2.3.1
Please go here and STAR the issue: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=13514
EDIT: 1/5/2011-IT'S FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+1 i can confirm this

Have you tried editing your build.prop file to change the version fingerprint? I know this has been used in the past to restore "missing" apps to the market.

You realize what that means is there will be glitches, patches, and rebuilds along the way. its happened before. the nexus one started off crappy with great potential and look at it now..its still top dog. so please be a professional with your purchase and know how to be a geek about it.

Well, I disagree with your assessment in terms of the Market.
It's ridiculous that Google's flagship device with it's flagship version of the OS, sold to the masses through a big-box store like Best Buy should have something as basic as the build number not being recognized and excluding you from apps that should be available to you.
Such a small thing to take care of on their server end, yet overlooked. Just another one of those little things that a certain other mobile OS operator doesn't overlook that makes the rabid fanbois of it froth at the mouth and pant how much better their OS is.
Fed Up but glad others are in the same boat
I am glad that i came across your posts. I was about to throw the stupid phone out the window. I had to exchange my Nexus S today at Best Buy (still running 2.3). When i came out with my new phone, it prompted me to update to 2.3.1. I did the update and after I was done setting up my phone, I noticed that there are apps THAT I PAID FOR that are missing from the Market.
I am sorry, but whether this is a new phone, developer phone, I paid top dollar and I would expect that something as simple as ensuring that the apps that i PAID for our available seems pretty straightforward.
Until they straighten their stuff out, I am pulling my SIM and going back to MT4G.
Everyone calm down, they will show up in the coming days. The day that the Nexus S came out I couldn't find some apps, like NYT. But it showed up the next day or two.
Not too sure why people are complaining here. You bought a google development phone so you get updates long before other phones get them. Along with that, come issue, bugs, ...time waiting for 'others' to catch up.
By 'others' I mean, the people, companies, ect who release their apps. Surely google doesn't micromanage what apps work for what versions of Android. Or which ones show up on the market depending on your Android build, phone, or cell phone provider. My guess would be that is all in the app developers hands.
Either wait, or go about getting them on your phone another way. After all, you bought a google development phone, a pre-requisite for owning one should be wanting to tinker around with it. As said, you could probably get them to show up if you edit your prop-build. This happens at every new android build release....
confirmed...on 2.3.1 i lose slingplayer, thats a deal breaker for me. back to 2.3 for now

You didn't lose it, just get the .apk and install it manually.
Titanium Backup is really handy to have. You'll always have backups to all your apps for occasions like this.

Well you know what? Go ahead and update to 2.3.1 and you will have issues downloading apps from the Market, that was previously there. That's the point of this thread, and it's a valid one.
Yes you can go ahead and edit your build.prop, revert your rom, etc..etc.. but the FACT of the matter is, 2.3.1 DOES have Market issues.
I do have a right to ***** about this issue, because it's a simple issue for Google to fix and too stupid for them to overlook.
And for the other people saying "you bought a developer phone, you should expect issues and problems".. actually no, I don't expect that. It's sold to the general public through Best Buy at a retail location. I expect it to work properly. If suddenly tomorrow there's a 2.3.1 update and you can't make any phone calls, I can bet you all will be *****ing about it. And this Market issue is exactly the same.
I changed the fingerprint in the build.prop to show as it is the older 2.3.
I don't understand why Google is releasing an update before it allows it fully in the Market....
Attached is the build.prop i used.
It is from GRH78 only have the fingerprint of GRH55.
The ONLY line i changed in this build.prop is:
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/soju/crespo:2.3/GRH55/79397:user/release-keys
The GRH78 fingerprint is:
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/soju/crespo:2.3.1/GRH78/85442:user/release-keys
You cash push the attached build.prop into /system (make sure you keep the correct permissions), reboot the device and the market should be fine.
Once Google update the market you can change it back.
Also if you change your build.prop down to 2.3 you'll get notifications on a 2.3.1 firmware update <facepalm>
Just change the fingerprint in your build.prop, download your apps, and change it back. Either that or wait for the app developers to update their apps, there's nothing wrong with the market.
Hey Everyone,
I haven't seen anything on the Epic forums about this yet... so here is my piece.
I got the Amazon app store the other day, and I'm pretty impressed. The most impressive feature, to me, isn't the free app a day... it is the fact that it remembers your purchases/downloads. I've wiped my phone yesterday to start from scratch, and as soon as I reinstalled the Amazon App Store, it asked me if I wanted to view my purchased apps. I clicked each one, they downloaded and installed.
The part I don't get, is why can't the Android Market do the same thing? You are required to put in a user/pass (just like amazon app store)... so what prevents them from at least remembering what apps you've downloaded and provide the links to re-download them? I've used Titanium Backup to back up and restore, but I'm not convinced that it doesn't create problems (phone runs much smoother and with less problems when I don't use Titanium Backup to restore).
I know this was long, and you've probably lost interest already... but if anyone has any info or knowledge on the subject, please chime in!
That is all.
Actually my nexus one does auto restore from android market, so it might be a feature in gingerbread.

Ok, maybe I need to clarify a bit...
I haven't "purchased" any apps from the Android Market or the Amazon App Store. I've downloaded numerous free apps.
I would imagine paid apps get re-linked... but what about the free apps you've purchased?
I've been playing around with ROMS... so after every wipe, I go in to the market... and nothing is there.
If this is a feature in Gingerbread, it will be awesome. I would never worry or hesitate to wipe my phone if I had an issue. It isn't downloading the apps that bother me, it's searching for each one individually.
For some reason the epic doesnt have the back up data thing that aosp phones do.
When you sign in, it automatically redownloads and installs everyapp you had installed.
Also, on market.android.com you can see everything youve downloaded and install it by hand.
I agree that its stupid the epic is missing that feature. My hero running cm6 has it

Wow, never knew about this. So if I wipe my phone, I can log into market.android.com and it will redownload all of my apps for me? As nice as it would be to have it all on the device, logging in to the website isn't bad at all!
A lot of the reviews of the Amazon Appstore never seem to mention what I personally think is a killer feature: sorting and filtering.
At any step of the way, you can choose to only view 3+/4+/5+ star apps, among other options. As soon as I heard about the new store, before it even came out, I had high hopes for sorting, knowing it's one of the great features of Amazon.com.
Google tends to shun sorting/filtering in favor of typed search queries. You can see this in the almost religious devotion to search in gmail, where sorting by anything but date is impossible without using a third party client--and this limitation is vehemently defended by Gmail supporters.
In this regard, I think Amazon will remain on top. I just don't see Google backpeddling on this philosophy, and the Android Market will remain dominated by algorithms and search queries.

A little off topic but Sense 2.0 ROMS do that also. I've been running Myn's and Mik's Desire Z ports on my Evo and whenever you log back in with your Gmail account all of your apps, paid and free, automatically start downloading to the phone. Pretty neat feature.
Yep, got a Wifi Xoom today, and sure enough about 90% of my installed apps came over...all of my purchased apps are available for redownload.
Same thing happened when I switched from HeroC to Epic.
This re-download was a new feature of 2.2, and you have to have 2.2 and be going to 2.2+ to restore.

I noticed that some apps vanish from My Apps in the new Market. I had about 4 apps to update in the old Market, two manual because of changed permissions. I left it as-is and installed the new Market. In the new Market, only the two apps without changed permissions appeared as updates in My Apps. The other two apps had vanished completely from the My Apps list. If I search for them manually they will still show up and I can update them though.
You may want to try clearing the data of the market app
Install the new market using the apk from android central.
I like a nice little improvement to the notification: it says "updating" instead of "installing" now
Yet, it is not performing fast enough... I feel laggy when using it. And the new UI looks like WP7 (though I personally like this new design )

don't be so quick to yell at google for blocking movies if you're rooted

Just completed the Dexter Mod to allow Google Play on my A7.
All appears working fine, except that Google play will not allow me to purchase any apps. I get an Error ("An error occurred, please try again"), everytime I touch the price button on any app or music.
I've rebooted the device without clearing the issue.
Any ideas?
Oh yeah, this device is not on Googles list of supported devices.
Thanks
Update - Still no joy. Free aps download, but cannot buy
I decided to try to re-do the mod.
I first went to Google and deleted all my accounts.
I did the Dexter mod again from scratch and set up a new Google Acct after the reboot.
Going to Google Play updated the Android Marketplace to Play Store on the tablet.
Using Google Play I still cannot buy an app, but I can download a free one. There are only two apps listed anyway. Missle Command which I cannot buy for $0.99 and 8Track, a music app which is free and downloaded fine.
The first time I did this there were a bizillion apps available, although I could get to none of them.
Any ideas here?
***** Another Update: I discovered I can buy apps using Play Store through my PC for the A7 which upload fine, but still not directly thru the A7
Another Update: Success
Seems like after waiting a while and not using the tablet's Play Store, when finally returning, I have a full list of games and apps.
I also just successfully downloaded a free game (Angry Birds Space) directly from the A7.
This is good news!
I had read elsewhere that on another tablet (Samsung, I believe), ignoring the Play Store app on the tablet for a while would eventually alloe it to work properly.
Seems like that's the case here.
Wow, quiet group here! Lots of views on both of my current threads and not a single comment. I know everyone was just waiting for me to figure it out myself ;<)
