TF101/TF201 ICS One Click Root/Unroot - Eee Pad Transformer General

First, this is my first thread on xda, I have been using it for years, but only just registered today!
I have followed several different meathods to root the Transformers On ICS, and just recently rooted my original transformer using viper root.
I realize this isn't necessarily "needed", but using viper root, I have put together a simple gui to make it a one click root. This will work on both transformers running ice cream sandwich.
This wont flash CWM, but it will install Superuser and busybox.
Here's a link to viperboy's viperRoot, please support him before you support me! LINK
Here's the download for my root, its called tfRoot: View attachment tfRoot.zip

So do you run this on the actual transformer or is it for the PC and you just made it look nicer?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
Edit: I see its a very small exe file inside the zip. So its not for running on the tablet

Yeah, its for the PC, I just made it look nicer, and removed a couple of steps

Wish I could root mine. I've rooted alot of android devices. But I can't get vipermod to work for me on my Ubuntu setup. And I'm not installing Windoze just to root this.
Wish I knew someone really good with Linux that could hold my hand and walk me thru step by step. I'm known as Mr Google since I can fins out anything with just searching the interwebs but for the life of me I can't get this thing rooted.

I own a TF101 9.2.1.11 , I couldn't get vipermod to work on my Mac as well, and I guess it should be the same story for Linux user. But when I try option 1 instead of option 3 in his root then everything works. Perhaps you could try option 1 on your TF101

So it means you failed to see the devices using "adb devices" command?
I also have an Arch machine, and the way to make adb recognize my android devices in Linux is to add USB ID from specific vendor (Asus in this case). You can try to add that (follow instruction from Google android sdk set up) and try again in your Ubuntu machine. If it still doesn't work then it's very weird...most probably hardware issue

Yea I set the rules file by following Google site for adb but it sees it but when I do an adb command it just sits there in terminal and seems to attempt the command a few times then fails. It is strange.
One of these days when my 9 month old gives me some time lol, I'll try messing with it again

Update Soon
I plan on posting an update for this within (hopefully) the next couple of days. The update will fix several bugs, correctly copy su to /xbin (something vipermod doesn't even do!), and add the option to install RecoveryInstaller.apk, so you can flash the clockworkmod recovery as well!
Also, I didn't realize how many people would want a Unix/Linux version! Vipermod still works for those platforms, but If you want, I can put something together (mac/Unix will take longer, as I don't own a mac, making development harder)!
Let me know if there is still interest in a Unix/Linus version!

I use vipermod and work very good..

I can answer the latter part of your post now.
Rooting is simple, download Modaco's "Visionary R14" app, open it, tap "temp root now" then wait, then when done tap "perma root now" and wait... job done.
Then you are able to install the only official current custom rom which will be modaco, there are other roms for other tablets you can use but I have not really researched this myself yet.
Plus CM 6.x followed by CM 7.x is in the works.

While this is a helpful guide, it has you downloading the Galaxy S drivers and installing them. This is entirely unnecessary.
Why does it have you moving ADB and it's libraries from platform-tools to tools? So that you can add tools into the PATH? They were moved in the SDK a while back, they will live in platform-tools going forward.
If fastboot isn't seeing your device open up android_winusb.inf and add an entry for the Nexus S
Code:
;Nexus S
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_18D1&PID_4E20&REV_0100
Feel free to add it under both [Google.NTamd64] and [Google.NTx86]

Usb debugging doesnt matter in bootloader. You connect your phone while in bootloader to install fastboot drivers.

If you have windows installed you just boot to the ubuntu cd and go through the setup. It will give you the option to resize the drive to make a partition for Ubuntu. Pick a size and go through the install. Once it is done when you boot you will have the option to boot from Windows or Ubuntu. If I remember right it will default to Ubuntu if you don't make a choice within the defined time. You can edit Grub to change that. You can do this to change it to windows if you prefer http://www.hackourlife.com/change-default-boot-order-ubuntu-10-04-lucid/.

Calling out to Devs

Was wondering if any of the devs here could possibly spend some time to develop for the a200 as it is similar to the a500?
Our boot loader is unlocked
We are rooted
And we have cwm.
Just need some custom rom love such as cm9,aokp and so on.
I am not a dev but have comp programming knowledge if you need any files from the a200 I would be happy to share.
What do you mean we have CWM??
Is there something I missed?
But I do agree, we need our own section along with some custom ROMs!!
Sent from my A200 using XDA Premium HD app
I found it!!!
Flash CWM? Follow this link!
Well, creating your own simple roms isn't all that difficult. It's just hard to do when you don't have an a200 to test with. But the theory behind it is all the same.
If you guys want to try it yourself, let me know, and I'll share what I know about it. Seeing's you're already rooted and CWM installed, should be safe
I wouldn't mind having a deodexed rom. I would do it myself but not sure if I have the time with how much I work. Unless it's not that hard to do. I just can't wait until I can theme this device. Already have all the .png's ready...

Not sure about how to pull the boot image.
But the files from a "rooted" system dump would be great. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that earlier.
The issue, is that the root app they published, flashes the boot.image in 2 parts. And they're modified. This results in a modified boot.image in your tab when you run the root. Would be easier to have a complete modified image.
Well, never de-compiled and recompiled an image before, so will figure it out Maybe!
The rest, can probably be run from the install script as far as permissions and such.

Ah, well good. That's what I get for not checkin the threads for a few days.
Hopin to see some customs soon. Would be nice!
Ok, just to update you, I sent out a test version this morning. Mainly to make sure I got the install-script right with permissions and stuff. No other changes other than removing the usual bad stuff.
If, and I say "if" it goes well, then I can proceed on stripping the heck outta it.
If not, I have an alternate plan.
Ok, need 1 or 2 of you people to try this install. All the bad stuff is taken out. At the worst, it will bootloop at start.
If it boots, check Su for write and re-write on the /system. Copy a file, see if it sticks. Then delete it.
Root explorer added to /data/app so check permissions.
Make sure you do your recovery backup first,
Then wipes and such like a normal rom.

Hey XDA Folks, we have a YouTube channel where we normally film ROM overviews for the LG G2x as well as the HTC Sensation. Just today, I bought the TF300 as my "go to" Android Device and so far I am very pleased!
It is a powerful device, without having any signal issues and it has a pretty decent price tag. Down below, we will be posting vids as Development options become available. So far, we only have the ROOT method, which is simply to run an APK and a Tweaked Build.prop which, is literally renaming the old one, and copying the edited version to /system.

I'm having a problem though with the custom build.prop process. My TF300 is rooted - or at least SparkyRoot and Voodoo OTA RootKeeper both say that it is - and I was able to restore root with Voodoo after updating to .29 last night. But I don't get the permissions dialog when opening ES File Explorer, and I get "operation failed" when I try to rename build.prop to build.prop.bak.
Any ideas?
EDIT: Problem solved. I used Root Browser instead, noproblem reanaming the file. Not sure what the problem was with ES File Explorer.

Hmm, haven't come across that error before. How about reinstalling ES File Explorer and as soon as you open it it should prompt you for ROOT Access. If it doesn't then go to the Settings and look for the "Enable Root explorer" option. Now it that fails, download another File Manager that has Root browsing capabilities. Hope this helps

I didn't try reinstalling ES FE, but I did reboot a couple of times, and also tried the enable root option in settings. None of that helped, so I gave up trying with ES FE and installed Root Browser Lite, which worked flawlessly.
Good videos, very simple and very instructable.
Now i know what is the first to do when i'll get my tablet (very soon, 2nd June).

Thanks man! More will be up in the future, such as unlocking bootloader and hopefully soon, custom ROMs

Thanks for the videos!

If you'd like to use ES File Explorer in the future, make sure you go into settings and mount /system as writable, and enable root browser. This will allow the renaming, and if you want to change the permissions just long press and hit properties.

Thanks a lot for that explanation. It will help anybody trying to follow this build.prop video who isn't familiar with how ES File Explorer handles permissions.

Quicky Update:
Just a message to inform that ASUS released the Bootloader Unlocking Tool, Team Cyanogen has gotten a fully working ClockWorksMod Recovery AND there is already an Official CM9 ROM for the TF300, still experimental but hey, Custom ROMs ftw
Videos will be out on those thingamajigs this coming weekend

OP, where did you get that tablet & keyboard bundle?? I saw on your video that both of them came in the same box.

Hey man! I live in Toronto, Canada and got the Bundle at my local Best Buy. There were only 2 options. Tablet only for $399 or bundled with the keyboard for $519. There wasn't a separate box for the Dock. However, after researching online it showed that it cost $149 for the dock which is RIDICULOUS in my opinion but anyway...turns out that I saved quite a bit getting the bundle

Yeah that bundle looks like a good deal. I'll see if I find one in my local BB, but didn't see it the last time I went.
