New Asus tablet...nexus - Eee Pad Transformer General

http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2012/03/06/google-finally-gets-it-nexus-tablet-incoming-for-just-130/
being a nexus user for my phone....this had me interested...I already have my tf101 b60...not rooted yet to. But a new toy? Maybe!

I am a bit skeptical to this. While we all love to pay as little as possible for our tablets, the reality is that at 130, either the device will not have the specs we want or there profit margins will be too low (and thus they won't sell it). As much as i hate to say it, i like that asus is making more expensive tablets. It means there tablets will have higher quality material so we can do more awesome things and the tablets will last longer.

Screw the price. I, like the nexus part lol. That means easily unlocked boot loader and unmolested Android starting point.
Edit that's also 130 UK. Closer to the kindle fire price I'm American.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Xparent Red Tapatalk

based on the price point they are trying to hit, I'm going to guess that the new Nexus tablet will be a 7 or 8" device. Asus isn't stupid enough to release yet another 10.1" device at a lower price than the just announced TF300.
I mean, maybe they will, but it doesn't make any real sense to do so. To have TF101, TF201, TF300, TF700 and Nexus tablet all in a 10.1" form factor, all with prices in different ranges when the specs are too similar... it just doesn't seem likely.
To hit the $200 price point and compete with the likes of Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet, I'm betting on a smaller device.

Article said a 7" tablet. Prolly wifi only would be my guess. Which makes 200 just about right
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Xparent Red Tapatalk

They're doing this to compete with Amazon, of course. The Kindle Fire sales might add Android devices to the market, but those devices will direct people toward Amazon marketing, not Google marketing. So.. Google probably wants Asus to make a cheap tablet that directs people back to Google markets and ads.

I love my transformer but I sure hope Asus isn't chosen make this tablet. They haven't successfully released a tablet since the first transformer. Don't get me wrong I think they make good products, but a lot would be riding on a Nexus branded tab. Android tablets lost momentum with Honeycomb and the Xoom launch. If Asus launches another tab the way they did the Prime with the Nexus name on it, Android tabs might never gain significant market share. I'm not sure who could do it but I don't think Asus is ready.

Meh, he hated the Xoom, a lot of bloggers hated the PlayBook. I for one, am one of the few who actually thought it was good.

Wow could that guy be more objective. Only thing I liked was the wallpaper which I have. Keyboard... if I really want a keyboard to carry around I would prefer my Bluetooth. Much better when xoom is connected to my TV. No led flash? He stated performance over and over. I have had no problems with performance. Asus has price advantage that's about all I got out of that.

Consumer Reports rated the Xoom the second best tablet behind the iPad 2.

Lol. The only thing I got out of that review was that the I PS display is nicer which I already knew. Other than that the xoom wins with 3/4g. Nice review.
And the keyboard is optional...costing an extra $150.

I ordered a 16GB Eeepad Transformer with the dock for $550. Can't touch a 32GB WiFi only Xoom for that.
The guy did give a very shiny review, and may not have been completely fair to the Xoom since it has had updates since he reviewed it... but the Asus does have some value for it's price.
As someone mentioned on another forum, Moto is going to have to reevaluate the price point. When they first came out, they had no real competition in the Android tablet market. The Xoom could only really be compared to the iPad, which is pretty insanely priced.

Really think you should compare apples to apples rather than oranges. The 32GB Transformer is $500 so still $100 cheaper than the Xoom. With dock it's $650.

if you include the official kb for the xoom at retail - not special reduced price - it's $670 with no dock or anything included to hold it up.
minus would be no usb port for the transformer without the dock. if i were docked i'd love to hook a hard drive. minus for xoom is that you won't have usb host without root.

It's in the Themes and Apps section.

With speech to text, which works quite a bit better on my Xoom than on my Android phone, keyboards are not nearly a necessity as they used to be. I showed a die hard Apple guy at work how STT worked on my Xoom, and he was stunned. I made sure to point out iPad and iPhone didn't have that capability.
Even tough he shouldn't have slammed the the Xoom so hard; I fully agree in his right to state what he likes best and whatnot.
The reviewer failed to understand that he was comparing against the original android version on the Xoom not the updated version that we have today. He also failed to notice the glitches in the keyboard dock that was found in the anandtech review which was a far better assessment. The build quality is not up to Motorola's level. Why do some reviewers often compare prices of a wifi only product with the 3G Xoom? Checkout the below link. Take note of his final words.

Because a $300 premium is too much to justify just a modem.
I do agree with your other points regarding Honeycomb software versions on the Xoom. At the same time, I believe the anandtech reviewer stated that the dock was running a preproduction firmware and that Asus said that would be addressed in th final firmware.

Thank you. I was about to point this out.
The Eee Pad Dock = $149 (includes extra battery, ports, trackpad)
Moto Keyboard - 69.99 + Moto Portfolio Case - 39.99 = $110
So the difference is really $40 and you're actually getting something for that money.
I just got extremely lucky, I purchased a brand new xoom wifi on ebay. For $485. So I'm happy with the price. And for that price it's beats the 16gb transformer any day.

Sorry, but it's $210 more for the 3g/4g Xoom than the wifi Xoom, not $300.
The wifi Xoom (at $590) is $90 more than the 32gb Transformer (at $500).
You can't compare the $400 16gb Transformer to the $800 32gb 3g/4g Xoom.

should i buy a xoom or wait

I sold my Ipad 2 cause it was gettin boring. I've had android phones for the past 3 years. I now have the SGS2E4GT. Should I get a Xoom or wait for something better? Or is there something better out there right now?
thanks for the advice.
The Xoom is a good buy if you can get it at the right price.
I've had iphone, ipad etc and really like my new Xoom
it feels like YOUR tablet unlike ipad which has too many restraints put on it by apple
you can set it up just as you like it
I too got bored of the whole apple thing a while ago.
I bought a transformer prime on release in December but returned it as it had issues and for £500 I wasn't willing to accept that
My Xoom was only £249 and as yet everything works perfect
I changed my Xoom to the US version to get ICS early and its great
Its true there will be better tablets out but at a premium cost
For now the Xoom is awesome value

Well I will tell you why I went Xoom despite my love of the transformer design and the knowledge that the 4 Proc Prime was on the way....
It basically came down to the "Google Experience"!
The Xoom is basically the unit that was used as the showpiece for HC and Android Tablet and thankfully to have that priviledge Google insisted that the Bootloader be unlocked which was a new thing for anyone familiar with Motorola! ( I have a D2G and don't get me started on Locked Bootloaders there! LOL)
In the end it was a tossup between waiting for the Prime and Keyboard combo or going with the slightly cheaper Xoom 4G and the fact that the transformer had a locked bootloader was the final nail in the transformer coffin!
The 4 Core was very tempting but most of the apps and games don't take advantage and no point in paying a premium until they do! By then those units will be cheaper so maybe then I will upgrade but I have to say I have ZERO regrets going Xoom!
In fact I have been very pleasantly surprised at just how versatile and comprehensive the unit is!
I can read USB Hard drives even those in NTFS format, USB Flash memory keys even use a wired USB Ethernet adapter!
I doubt any iPad can do that!
The fact that the community can patch the Kernal at will means even more magic is possible!
You can never go wrong with a "Google Experience" device be it pad or phone!
My only hope is that Moto will unlock the Droid4 as well cause if they do I will stay Moto for the forseeable future.
They make great Hardware their problems have always been on the software side!
Unlocked bootloader makes that situation go away!
I can tell you this much - I absolutely love my Xoom. I have been going "Android crazy" over the last couple of months. It started black friday with Best Buy's Dell Streak 7 dump ($159) - gave that one to my daughter.
Picked up a Lenovo K1 at Office Depot around Xmas for only $299, which was a steal, but the tablet is not "pure" enough Android for me, and is buggy (it is on eBay now
Then, I found a very nice, barely used Xoom locally for $240. It was manufactured in March, so I was a little worried, but it was absolutely mint, and, like he said barely used. I was NOT disappointed.
Fast forward to last week, my Transformer Prime finally arrived. It is OK, but I am telling you, I like the Xoom better at this point. The Xoom's 1/18 ICS update went so smooth, and the Xoom is quick and stable. The Prime is not as solid right now, and I will honest with you - feels no faster than the Xoom with ICS in normal use (even though benchmarking proves it to be nearly 2x as fast).
I am going to keep both the Prime and the Xoom but the Xoom is a top notch machine. It is pure Android (even the prime has many customizations, though nothing as obtrusive as the Lenovo's).
I would say, yes - if you can get one for a good deal, go for it!!!
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
I've had both the ipad 2 and the motorola xoom.
To be honest I prefer the ipad 2, its much lighter and has a better interface.
I use the xoom for recipes in the kitchen but I wouldn't want to carry it around all day
I would wait for the new thinner version
Staples had the Xoom for something like $250 if you look on this forum you can find the thread. I guess it all depends on what you're looking to do with it. I passed on the Transformer Prime as the Xoom does what I need, I really don't need quadcore.
The 10" xyboard isn't an option for me as it is too expensive and doesn't offer enough to make me trade in my xoom. The ability to write notes is certainly something I'd like but I'd rather stick with a GED tablet and have the microsd memory slot.
ipad3 is due out in March if you believe the rumors and the hi resolution android tablets should be out between February on June. If I wanted a tablet now, the $250 Xoom at Staples is probably the best buy out there now. ICS reviews on the xoom have been very good, I haven't received it yet as I'm using a LTE xoom.

Google's Plan A (in partnership with ASUS)

It looks like Google's master plan might be to proliferate the world with $149 7" Android tablet devices under Google's own branding. Cutthroat pricing and with Google's full 1st party support on the software side, it could work.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/alicetruong/2012/03/21/googles-nexus-tablet-could-be-priced-at-149/
A heavy casualty of this is that the $250 Tegra3 ASUS MemoPad might have been canceled.
7'' is to small for my taste... even if is cheaper
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA
7" is more portable. I've been considering getting a 7" device because I'm thinking I might carry it around more than I do my 10" devices. I was going to wait for the MemoPad to decide. For Google, 7" is where Apple isn't, so there's no direct confrontation with Apple at that size. At that price point, it's less expensive than today's Apple 8GB iPod Touch.
I almost bought one the Sprint or Verizon branded HTC Flyers. ICS was just starting to roll out to them but it is only using a single core processor. Woot & Ben's Outlet had them for around $200 brand new. The lack of computing power was one of the deciding factors. The other was the fact that I didn't really need another tablet.
Now if googles tablet is going to have a quad core Snapdragon processor then I might pick one up for $150.
I agree 7" size is ideal for everyday use

I agree a 7" tablet size is ideal for everyday use, it can easily be held in one hand securely without using some sort of a strap-on device. A 7" fits in my pocket a 10" does not.
I have a DELL Streak 7 and a ASUS TF101 and the DS7 gets used much more due to its portability advantages over the TF101 even though I think the TF101 is a superior product
I would be very much interested in a 7" quad core tablet (whether it's the Tegra3 or whoever else's chipset). I would hate to see the ASUS memo get shelved because Google is trying to flood the market with cheap tablets to gain market supremacy.
I'll believe it when I see it @ $149, on the shelf at Best Buy. The Nexus phones were supposed to be unsubsidized and $300 retail, but then we got another run-of-the-mill smartphone for $650, with the only difference being timely software updates.

I very much share your cynicism
Talking costs nothing and salespeople do too much of it, ( reminds me of the TI guy bigging his OMAP 5 as the best thing around disregarding the slight caveat that it wasn't really around yet).
I would LOVE to see it though. I'll end up showering the extended family with those.
Target: Amazon
A Google-branded 7" would be slated to go head-to-head against Amazon's Kindle Fire, or even a B&N Nook. No dummies there, the know the money is to be made on subscriptions, app sales, and other software. It's the Polaroid concept....give away the cameras, then charge heavily for the film. Or just like car dealers....they don't make crap when they sell a car, all their money is made on Service, Parts, and accessories.
Edit - 3/31/12:

I have decided that since I already have two 10" tf101s, I really want to get the Nexus 7 right now to replace my tf101 as my "on-the-go" tablet.
I read the iconia 700 review, and it seems the Tegra3 is still a bit weak for driving the 1920x1200 screen as smoothly as the 1280x800 tablets.. so I will hold off on getting a new 10" tablet until the next round of 1920x1200 (or maybe 2560x1600??) comes out with beefier GPUs. I'd gladly take one with the new MALI405 GPU and a Cortex A15 based CPU.

I really want one, but I have the same concerns about the GPU. There is a reason why Apple (not that I like Apple) is using dual core, instead of quad, with a huge GPU in their new tablet. I was not at all impressed with the Tegra 2 GPU, and while the the Tegra 3 is better, it's not good enough to push that high resolution. Since the Tegra 4 will both have new CPU and GPU architecture, I may just wait. I'm only buying the Tf700 for the resolution, and I'll need a good GPU to push that.
I like hi-tech stuffs and have no problem affording the TF700. Currently having 1GTablet, 2x TF101s, 1x Nook Color, 1x Galaxy Player 4. I have enough Android fun ! I am waiting to try the next Asus Windows RT device.
My favorite TF101 has satisfied all my real needs.
I'll be selling my TF101 for the Nexus 7, I want to get a good taste of google-driven goodness for once, and this one actually looks like something I'd buy, unlike the earlier Nexus devices.

Didn't have to sell anything.. This will be my first tablet. I just bought the Nexus 10 on Sunday, Hopefully I get it soon with no problems, because many people seem to have issues with it. How is yours?
I sold this (minus the 500GB HDD and 8GB flash drive) for $183; the 500GB HDD for $60, and a 3TB HDD for $130, a Radeon HD 5570 GPU for $50, and some other money from somewhere else (I forget) to buy a Nexus 4 originally, but since I also had enough for a Nexus 10 at the time, and the Nexus 4 was out of stock, and since I realized I couldn't keep up with a monthly phone plan most likely, and that I wanted a bigger screen for gaming purposes, and the Nexus 10 has better specs, I decided to go with the Nexus 10
TLDR: I sold a Nexus 7 + other stuff and decided to get a Nexus 10 with the funds I got

I sold my iPad 3 to purchase this. Literally sold the iPad for $450 and bought this for $400. And good riddance to that toy. I bought the iPad when it was hands down the best tablet available. Now with the Nexus 10, I feel like the Nexus beats it in every single category. The screen is more beautiful, its thinner, lighter, easier to hold and grip, a more capable OS. It feels more polished and I can't wait to start romming it once the roms start to come out of Alpha/Beta releases Gotta love devs, always making devices more incredible as the months go on.
I've made the jump from an iPad1 and am stunned by the improvements in screen and performance.
Sold my Xoom WiFi 32gb model after getting the Nexus 10 and configuring the homescreens near the same. Sold it to a friend who is replacing his wife's Kindle Fire with the Xoom.

I don't know how people are saying the nexus 10 has a better screen....the iPad can be brighter, represents colors better and has much better viewing angles. Hardware wise that's the only thing I'm going to miss and it's certainly not enough to hold on to it.
sold my n7 didn't want to because it was a great device and fine form factor but couldn't justify having both on my budget with the holidays coming up.
Sold my Nexus 7. Couldn't be happier and I couldn't ever see myself going back to a 7" tablet.
Also sold my N7. Too small for my aging eyes.
Actually I won an Asus Transformer Pad 300 from Android Police, and sold that unopened to get the N10. Right now I'm trying to sell the Acer a500 I was using before my nexus 10 got here.
[sent from my nexus 10]
