Hi guys,
I'm freaking out. Rooted my Xperia Arc (didn't unlock bootloader) and after following the guides, decided to remove a few apks from the system/app folder, and moved them to the SD card.
After playing around, decided to hit factory reset... big mistake. The phone is almost fully functional, but home button isn't working and there's no lockscreen.
I figured I just had to get the files back to the initial place, right?
I finally managed to get them back on system/apps... but even after that, when I factory reset it again, it still not working. It looks like the "factory reset rom" got screwed and won't go back to normal.
I'm lost, what should I do? I've had the phone for like, 3 days. I don't really feel like unlocking the bootloader or getting another room.
What can I do?
Try to reflash with SEUS

Thanks... but how do I do that?
And do I need an unlocked bootloader for that?
THANK GOD!!
I made it work!!
The problem was in the permissions: the permissions on the files that I had copied were different than all the others.
I just ticked the permissions for all the itens, did yet another factory reset and it worked!
Thanks a lot!!
you dont have to unlock.
just download sony ericsson update service (SEUS), follow on screen instructions, and reflash it.
and download cwm recovery and make backup before doing anything with your system file.

Now that we have root is will there be a way to unroot if it has to be returned for service?
I would think a factory reset would work.
Do a complete backup before you do so.

Factory reset won't do anything except clearing out your /data partition. You will need to flash original image to unroot.
Guide has been updated with instructions to turn S back on!
No need to re-flash.
Grankin I know you told me before that I should be fine sending the phone back since I put it back to SON but should I do the whole downgrade of the ROM and radio that was posted in a thread on here? Is that essentially the same as unrooting is my real question?
Has anyone had to return a mytouch 4g after they've rooted? If so what did you do before you sent it back? (besides put S back to ON) I want to see if you turn S back on and do a factory reset if it puts the apps you deleted during root appear back.
*im trying a factory reset right now I can't wait till tuesday cause its bugging me lol*
Verdict: Factory Reset did NOT bring back the few apps I deleted. Great
I did the downgrade because I switched colors. It worked for me just as described. Just don't expect ota update for awhile after you do it. Make sure you really want to turn it back in.

Every time my phone is in hboot searching for the images it says "No image or wrong image" over and over a few times. I keep doing it over and over
*edit* figured it out... instead of renaming the rar file to PD15IMG.zip I just took the .zip off and it worked beautifully!

Bookmark that, I did!
I've managed to install a transparent bar on my xperia, after changing permissions to rw-r--r-- and move the systemUI.apk it ended up with an error and i've restarted my phone.
After that, i have infinity loop. How to fix that?
I have backed up the old systemui.apk on my computer, but how to move it back there? >.<

SEUS - I guess the only option unless you can boot it up first. Not sure if there is any recovery exists at them moment. May be that might help.

as my understanding goes on, when you mess up a theme update and you get to a loop, you are probably done and have to re-flash your FW.
If it is force close then you can probably with some hardship put the original back. Did you try to ask the question in related thread?

Nope, i didnt ask yet. If SEUS wont work i'll search up for flash.
Edit: it started downloading, hopefully it will be fixed soon.
I'm so glad i took a backup of everything before i move systemui.apk and i wont lose a single snapshot or file.
I'll edit the thread later
Edit 2:
My phone is now brand new and un-rooted
xD
I'm going to re-root it again, remove bloatware and un-root it. No more playing with system files till a perfected recovery tool.
My heart was beating like crazy
Thanks for the quick answers
You are welcome. Glad to hear that your phone is back

You probably can't brick the phone forever. There is always a solution for it specially for this themeing but always be careful with what you do.
Good luck,
I tried to go from my AOKP device to a stock rooted rom I downloaded from the Development Section here, but it seemed to go horribly wrong.
I got force closes all over the shop, so I did a Factory Reset and tried again, still got Force Closes.
I tried to restore my Backup, but it seems that 4.2 puts my SDCARD data in a folder called /0/, so TWRP couldn't find them.
I have ended up downloading the Factory Image for 4.2 from Google and have decided to start from scratch. (And deleted ALL MY DATA in the process!!)
So, is there anyway I can root this stock ROM? I have just re-installed TWRP, so I am set with a custom recovery!

This worked for me.
It might cause a boot loop.. Don't worry about it, let it sit a few..then power off
And restart.(see the last page in the thread.)

Yeah, just done it! Seems to work well!
All I need now is an Extended Power Menu!!
Hi guys,
I tried to update my Nexus 4 to 4.4 when Google pushed the update out for it yesterday, I forgot I had unlocked the phone (I don't have any custom ROMs on it, just SuperSU.)
Every time I try and power it on, the loading screen is endless, although I can hold power and volume down to enter recovery mode, nothing seems to be working.
I am a bit of a novice so any help or suggestions would be really appreciated!
Thanks.
The first few pages of the forum is littered with posts like this, i was in the same situation.
What i did was download the 4.3 rom from google, and flash /boot and /system onto the phone. I suspect the 4.4 rom would also work.
This got the phone booting without harming (most of) my data, but much of the UI was mangled and didnt work properly. I tried to backup my images over USB but it didnt work, you might have a better result. I also wanted to backup my SMS but they had all vanished.
I rebooted the phone to recovery (TWRP) and used adb to backup the sdcard (adb pull /sdcard sdcard) then did a full flash using the 4.4 rom downloaded from google and that got it working again. Then i reflashed the latest version of TWRP recovery and SuperSU.
Hope that helps.
That's really helpful, thanks! Is there ANY chance of a step-by-step? I'm a complete 'noob' probably a mistake to root in the first place :crying:
If you're busy don't worry, just don't want to **** things up more than I have haha.
Thanks, appreciate it.

Cheers guys, a lot more helpful than the bloke from Google. Will try it in the morning!
This will surely help
If somebody is facing boot loop after kitkat update on nexus 4 and no data backup can try to go to safe mode and backup their data. To goto safe mode on boot screen just keep pressing up and down volume button for some time phone will get into safe mode and can be backed up.
Hi,
It also happened to me, dont know if it is related to having ROOT or not, but i had to manually flash factory image (4.4) and it worked. I flashed everything except userimage.img but on first boot it took like 15 minutes to reboot and then all my personal data (photo, music...) was gone....
So just be cautious before upgrading!

Yeah that is pretty much what I did to fix mine except that I did not flash the userdata (step 10 in chapter D) so that I would't loose my data.

I had sideloaded a rom in recovery so that it will replace the lost system.img on my phone. Then, it booted up and I flashed back factory images the usual way. Everything is running smoothly again.

This is sideload guide. And the is the rom I used to sideload before: Purity. After I had successfully booted into the system. I flashed 4.4 factory images using this awesome noob friendly guide for a clean kitkat update.

Installing the driver. Refer to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992345
Boot to bootloader and connect to your PC, usually Windows will find the driver automatically
Hey guys, I'm having a serious problem with my Note 3 running kitkat, I attempted to modify the platform.xml and I don't exactly know what I did but i was attempting to allow apps to write to my external SD card, but I didn't change the permissions on it now the device literally is as about as useful as a brick.
-It will not run apps
-Internet doesn't work
-Various other problems
I've had a look at some other threads but my knowledge on androids is quite little, It was rooted by a friend who didn't exactly explain Rom's for android. So I'm wondering what I can do because I have some important things on my phone I do not want to loose, and from what i'm aware of a factory reset isn't the best option, if there's a way other than factory restoring it, I did see another solution with using ADB I think it was but i'm sure there is another way I can fix it. Note: Cannot browse any files or modify them they're not visible.
Thanks
Edit: Tried a factory restore from the restore menu I had with the root called CWM-base recovery same issue still popped up.
2nd Edit: Fixed the issue wasn't easy(This is for the people that have the same issue) I basically used android debug bridge to install root explorer, just download the android SDK from google and look up a tutorial on how to install apps, I modified the xml file to a stock one I had in the /system before I modified it, due to the apps crashing nothing would open so I couldn't do this, after that I restarted the phone made sure the apps crashed again, this was a good thing that they crashed, all I did after that was a factory reset never lost app data or my text files, everything is working and thank you guys for the help Some of my apps were gone but I had written them down so yeah, it was an annoying issue not exactly an easy fix b ut it works.
Hey. If u perform data wipe in recovery, u do not lose any files from your phone so this should be safe.
Unfortunately I have no idea how to fix the problem with XML file, but u can safely wipe your phone or reflash your rom.

"data wipe in recovery" By this do you mean the volume up + volume down + home till you get to the menu and press the restore? I just read this somewhere sorry for the noob question?
U press home +volume up +power button combo, until it reboots into recovery. Then you select wipe and factory reset or similar option. Just do not perform perform any formats, cause that's what erases your data. fingers crossed!

I pressed that some little blue and yellow writing came up and my phone's screen went black I guess it either ran out of charge or something else i'll just wait and thanks so much for the help.
Always remember to have your phone over 30-40% of battery when u go to recovery to avoid your phone going off when messing with your phone
If u can get your phone to recovery, you can try to copy important files from there to your of and completely wipe everything and flash a new ROM.

So once my phone comes back on I can do a factory reset and hope for the best? I don't really want all of my apps to go or anything i've installed on the actual device, so when I do a factory reset will this remove everything i've got, i'm not entirely sure how i'd copy the files on to my pc because I couldn't browse anything on the device last time i plugged it in after I modified the platform.xml
You will keep your files but all the apps will be removed, so you will need to install them back. Probably you could copy the file you messed up from someone else and try to get tour phone back up but I am not sure how to do it.

Ok thanks a ton for the help, I'm going to see if there's a way to use the adb utility to pull the file I damaged get a stock one and push it, I don't know if it will work but i'll give it a go, or should I just do a factory reset? I'd prefer to keep my apps but if it means I have to wipe them I will.
You can give it a try and then if it doesn't work, do the factory reset

Did the factory restore, via the boot thing same issue and the stupid app crashing, I'm puzzled on what to do. Any other solutions I'm concerned my phone is literallly broken now.
Factory reset does only reformat cache, Dalvik and data partition. If you tinkered with your system one and rendered something useless, it won't help you at all to do a factory reset. It just does not touch the normally READ ONLY system. If you wanna fix it, and you have no setting to fix permissions in TWRP/CWM you have to reflash the system, either by reflashing the custom ROM you used from there or by using Odin and flashing the original system back to it. This is why you ALWAYS should have a TWRP (or if you really think about outdated stuff... CWM) FULL backup ready and armed.
