Always backup your SD card! - Xperia Play General

Hey guys
I have somehow managed to format my SD card, I was doing a CWM backup and put the handset in my pocket, when I pulled it out it had formatted the data, system, cache and then my SD card, I have lost all my test roms and other bits so make sure you back your data up and don't be a numpty like me!

I'm not rooted but I'll keep that in mind if I ever do root.
Thanks

oh no.... gutted!!
luckily for me ive always had a back up of my sd card from early on
even tho i have a 32gb sd it always pays to have a back up
i bet u wont be making that mistake again

No I won't,
I had a good version of my MIUIv4 rom on there as well and never backed it up.. back to the drawing board I suppose!
(I'm glad google backs your phone numbers up!)

Lock clockwork recovery - Incredible

I have an HTC Incredible - Does anyone know if there's a way to lock clockwork recovery down so there's a more secure way to prevent unauthorized access to my recovery screen?
Just a general wondering. I'd like to prevent just anyone from holding volume down and power button, and then going into custom recovery and wiping my SD card.
Dont let other people play with ur phone...lol sorry had to.

If they physically have your phone, they can just pop out the SD card. I really don't understand your concern.

They could do a data wipe or brick his phone doing something stupid.
They could also delete my rom backups - I keep these backed up on an iscsi on my local network, however you never know. I'm just being paranoid!

Sure, but he specifically said he was worried about them wiping his SD card.

Ok I am officially confused...please help!

Ok here is the deal...I got the phone and knew I was rooting from day 1. So I did so.
Rooted, CWM, ROM Manager, Root Explorer, Titanium Backup, SetCPU, ASTRO, JT voodoo kernel .2.
Thats what I had before the problems started happening. I then flashed JT's 1000 with animation over top of the .2 due to everyone saying you could...well all hell broke loose. My sd card somehow went bad...so today I went to the verizon store after my phone magically went back to stock with a root...so I un-rooted before going to the store and they gave me a new sd card no questions asked. Well I put the new sd card in...and the phone brings up the wizard asking me english or spanish blah blah...
Now the weird part...I put the CWM update.zip onto the sd card and boot into it and flash the .2 kernel and WAHLAH...my old launcher pro comes up with EVERYTHING installed on the phone still from before...however my super user wasn's showing up so I simply went to the market and got it.
HOWEVER the phone is basically in a weird way acting up...like before I could hard reset and get right into CWM but now the only way in is to run the update.zip. Also now my facebook wont work AT all as far as syncing my contacts. Also without launcher pro I couldn't load anything onto the phone because it was saying I didn't have any internal memory space.
Now the part that REALLY gets me is I actually odined back to stock...atleast so I thought I did. I loaded it up, ran the stock .md5 for the i500 and thought all was well, keep in mind this was before flashing the .2 kernel. However everything was still acting funny, couldnt sync or download and all that...
Basically what I am ranting for is because I would GLADLY and LOVE to go back to a phone basically as if I got it out of the box today especially knowing how to do everything now after much research...basically lesson learned on flashing over another kernel...
ANYWAYS...PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO GET THE OUT OF THE BOX PHONE BACK!!!
You will get MANY thanks
-Tim V
edit - don't get me wrong, I would love to keep everything on here as its all still working correctly, however the little bugs now are a killer and quite the annoyance!
Please refer to adrynalynes post on how to completely remove voodoo. This will take care of your problem with 0.00 internal storage.

well thats the thing...when I re-flashed .2 back on top of the 1000 with animations...it took me from the stock screen with not having any internal storage back into launcher pro with everything installed but not validated. Like I had to get the super user icon back and re enter codes for titanium and such...makes no sense to me...
Right now your mbr is hosed. You are not going to get it back by flashing other voodoo kernels. You need to take care of this problem before you can go any further.

Yes, but your contacts will resync when you sign into gmail and if you have a backup you can get your apps and settings back.

Your sdcard went bad too? The internal memory problem you had was not related to your sdcard. I'm not sure if you are confused or if I am. Either way glad you have everything working again and that the uninstaller worked for you.

maybe it was just a bad combination of things...but yes my sd card they gave me in my replacement phone was bad after i installed the kernel on top of the other one...same day not instantly. Have no idea if it was a coincidence or not that they both messed up at the same time...but basically I took a 1GB micro sd from my old phone and put it in and the phone decided to magically boot up to stock but rooted with the super user icon on the front screen...but everything was acting up internally then...couldn't download anything and I couldn't sync properly. So new sd card from the store after un-rooting...that was all i had to do cause the phone did the rest for me as far as appearing stock for visiting the store...got me...just glad everything is working correctly now...just will take all day at work tomorrow to get everything back the way i like it!

I'm confused...how does your phone work without a rom on it. Or did you wipe everything then try to nandroid?
We're comin from a pure power source.
I forgot to put the new Rom on my phone I was going to flash but did not notice until I wiped everything with a wipe all type of zip and was ready to flash for some reason I could only get to recovery and had to restore with a nandroid back up I don't know why I couldnt just boot up and go back to the Rom I was running anyhow my point is thank god for nandroid back ups

Even if you wiped everything in your recovery, you would have mounted the sd card through recovery, loaded the rom on there, and then flashed it. No need to restore a backup. You do not have to have a rom on there to be able to access the sd card.

I assume you weren't near a computer, because you can still mount the SD card in Mass Storage mode in recovery, to copy over whatever you needed to flash . . .

You only have one ROM zip on your SD card at a time?! (I have the last ROM flashed and a stock ROM)
But I've done what you did and nandroid back ups are good.

Wiped "Internal Storage" in TWRP, by mistake. Anyway to recover?

Hi,
I updated to TWRP 2.8.2.0, in which developers changed the arrangement of Wipe buttons. I was busy, and pressed the buttons as i remember them and always do this (wipe system, cache and dalvic), without looking to phone screen.
Strangely, I found my free space 13 Gb !!!!!!!! .... Then realized that internal storage was wiped.
Everything on phone was lost.
I lost all my photos, 1 year worth.
Can anyone recommend a way to restore them ?
Thanks guys and really I appreciate it.

I think it's all gone unfortunately, unless you were using something like Dropbox. I'd recommend that for the future, just sync DCIM with your PC and you're safe.
I did that once too, it's quite a lesson to learn! At least you can connect via adb, that sort of thing, to get a ROM onto the phone again. You can also copy internal storage to your PC with that method, too, so if you ever plan to do something extravagant, you can first back up the whole internal storage.

Sad
The ironic thing is that I copied all my phone to PC one day before, to install stock Lollipop which will wipe everything.
Unfortunately, I deleted the backup from PC once i restored it to phone.
Can't recover it from PC now.
I learnt my hard lesson.
Try recuva for the pc

Happened to me last week.
I just switched from CWM to TWRP. When I tried to do a full wipe, I got a bit cocky and said to myself, "I don't need to carefully read the steenking warnings... I've been using CWM for a long time... how much trouble can I get with TWRP?"
After typing YES to the confirmation, I expected the wipe to be quick -- 5s -- but then it took a bit longer. It was only then that I realized that I wiped everything, including the SD.
Oh well... lessons learned.
BUT the good thing about losing my KitKat nandroid is that I got rid of old files and get a fresh start.

Dude, on TWRP just go to backup it will backup EVERYTHING. Restore via TWRP too.
But honestly m8 (i hope i don't sound like a jerk as i don't mean like that) if you don't know yet how to use TWRP backups maybe it's better to don't mod the phone.
Remember, Xiaomi phone on most of the world has no tech support or tech store to fix if something to badly wrong.
Full backups don't garantie too that you will be able to recover.

Internal Storage won't be backed up right? It seems on this phone (or a/b phones, coming from galaxy note 4 so don't really know) it requires you to wipe storage as well as everything else when flashing a new rom.

Yes, it wont be backup at all.
In fact how i do is FLASH first, wipe later so we are sure do not be stuck without a ROM in case we can't access internal storage after format.

Thanks for the advice,
This is why I like a removable micro SD card slot, but at the end of the day it has dual SIM considering everything else including price of course. So literally nothing worth complaining about when it comes to the hardware side of things. Software? I'm no coder so I'll leave that for others to judge.
If it had to be a choice between the two they made the right one.

I agree, SD card expansion is a MUST to flash and backup things. The only reason Xiaomi didn't include this option is to try to change people mind in to flash things.
Still USB Cables to USB sticks work at least
