With the Evo 3D about to land and a couple other pretty good phones on the horizon, most owners are probably about to move to something new or at least i know I am. But I am questioning whether to hang on to the Hero.
With WiFi, I can do a lot of the things I already do and use it more as a MP3 type device and a backup just in case.
So are you going to keep the Hero if and when you upgrade and why?
I plan on keeping the Hero and use it as my MP3 player. I currently have a 8gb sd card and will most likely get a 16 or 32 when I retire my Hero to MP3 duty. Plus with the wifi feature can listen to pandora, lastfm and slacker (plus other radio stations online)
Before I got the Hero I had the HTC Diamond and a local Radio Shack gave me a good deal on a trade in, I wont trade in the Hero because it still has life in it.
Keeping my Hero until it dies!
I am very satisfied with my Hero...especially with Gingerbread goodness courtesy of CM7. While I would like a faster processor, I know taking the leap to the next generation phone will also require that I cough-up another $10/mo for 4G on Sprint.
4G is the last thing I care about, so being forced to partake of that fruit makes me want to hold on to my Hero for as long as possible!
I really resent Sprint and its forced up-sell to 4G...
I like my Hero, it's too slow, though. I'll need something faster soon, probably an evo 3d that I'll root ASAP

Every smartphone adds a $10/mo charge now, not just 4G ones.

I would wait until you see in the EVO 3D forums "Permanent Root" because HTC is shipping their phones with encrypted boot loaders now. If you really need root then Nexus S or OG EVO + Shift are the way to go for now.

What? When did this happen?
It's pretty much all that has been talked about today based on this http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...r-recovery-and-kernel-images-all-locked-down/
If you want to see some real hate just go look at there facebook page facebook.com/htc people are letting them have it

There have been so many comments that HTC finally had to say something. If they decide to unlock the bootloader, they may have to delay the release date
Well, regardless of how the 3D lockdown plays out, I'll probably be hangin with the Hero for quite some time. Mostly budget oriented reasons. Even my cars I buy used and drive 'em to death, and they don't get nifty upgrades provided by a community of cutting edge mechanics..
If it can't be modded, I'll be.switching over to the Nexus. And as for my Hero, I'll donate it to a local person who is less fortunate than me who can't get a good phone.
I was going to get the 3D, but after learning the bootloader will be locked I am hesitant on getting it. Howeverm HTC said they would look into locking evrything down. It appears that 1000's if not 10.000's of people would not get the phone if it is locked. So now it's just a waiting game, but either way I should be updating my phone and I plan on keeping my Hero, flashing it over to Metro and giving it to my son.
I don't understand why they would want to lock the bootloader on their phone. Once I buy that phone, they've made their money. They shouldn't give a damn about what I do with it or what I put on it.
If I void my warranty doing it, then that's even better for them! Now they don't have to replace the brick or service it at all AND they keep my money! It's win-win!
My heroc does everything I need a phone to do and more, definitely keeping it..
If you want to boycott HTC but still want Sense, get a Nexus S

Its for GSM but the CDMA version is on its way
I need a backup and waiting on getting an evo 3d. So ya
I'll be getting the EVO 3D, but I'll keep my Hero for various other purposes as well.
so guys i have had evo for a day now and can't seem to find the right rom or kernal to support my needs like a little overclock love but cant finding anything and would like to go to epic just cause of the friendliness of the device at least i heard so i am wondering what the epic has been o.c to cause evo only at like 1.1 as far as i can tell what about epic does a locked kernal sourse have a lot to do with this htc's is locked wondering about samsung?
hey whats going on bud, well based on experience the Evo 4g has a lot more roms and kernels. I had the Evo and just got the epic but boy let me tell you I regret it. I like Samsung and all but the Evos development has A LOT more activity.
I just changed my Gfs evo to the new Synergy ROM and it works great with the stock kernel. I also work for sprint and based on customer preference the Evo wins. 1 epic for every 5 evos we sold.
The problem I see is this battery boy this battery sucks I have used it like 3 hours however I am at 56 percent or should I go to the shift but I love this big screen will I see a diff with battery extention everyone keeps talking about

With the announcement of the upcoming root for the Evo 4G 3D, wondering if I should return the EVO 4G I just bought on Friday to the Sprint store and upgrade to the 4G 3D.
Is the garunteed root worth the $75 to upgrade (after my corporate discount) or not? Or do individuals here have confidence in the mod community that a root method for the base EVO will be found?
Thoughts?
I would say the dual core processor and extra ram are worth $75.
For me, the kick stand is actually really useful and the 4G is just a nice phone all around. I would still switch to the 3D though if it was only $75. The camera also seems slightly better with colors and clarity on the 3D based on a couple different articles I've seen comparing the two.
Agree, and am definitely leaning that way, doing my research it seems that the 3D also has DLNA capability which (with my current 32GB sd card) would make for a nice media server for long car trips...
I love my Evo 4g, have owned it since it was released. I have no desire to get the 3D. Look at all the mature ROMs made for the Evo already. It will take a while to get them as good for the 3D and by the time theres a good ROM out, there may be a better phone LOL
im pretty much in the "wait till next year for sprint upgrade" boat, by wich time evo 3d will be cheaper, a better phone will have come out, and the 3d will already have a steady collection of roms and mods out there to make the phone yours, for now , im jsut trying to not hate my stock GB 4g , but its kinda hard to, i hate hate hate gb with a passion , worst pos ever installed on my phone id rather have stock froyo
I am the complete opposite of LCL22. I love GB and am happy to be able to run it. FroYo ran its course and I think the GB is better built. Don't hate because you can't root.
i felt like an idiot after buying a 3VO.
the dev-ing is still in early stages (to me), the 3d isnt really that impressive ( reminds me of holograpic x-men cards), and im basically stuck using sense 3.0 (after being on 3.5) if i wanna use 3D.
i knew it was a faster phone, but with the excellent kernels & streamlined roms of the 4g, i dont really feel the power....lol
i recommend sticking with the OG till they bring out the quad core evo next year, by that time the 3d should have a great following.
Since im on boost & only paid $100 for the 3VO i really shouldnt complain, but unless you can get one "dirt" cheap, dont switch
With the OG EVO hitting 2 years next summer everyone will get the latest phone so expect it to get a lot of support.

Thanks J_apa_n for the feedback. I added the 3d and the Epic Touch forums to my XDA favorite folder so I can keep up with the progress. However, neither phone seems ready for prime time just yet. At worse, the 3d is just too similar to the EVO to lock in another contract. The Epic Touch seems like a world beater, but has some troubling issues....especially considering Samsung's track record. On the EVO, it seems that after a lull in action, development has blown back up. I'm just hoping the HTC Edge is released as the next EVO once they add a CDMA radio.

i'm still rocking the original evo and i'm glad i've stuck with it.
sadly, sprint coverage (voice and especially data) is horrendous in the place i now live and work - western and central pennsylvania - so i'm probably going to be switching over to verizon once i get a chance to play with the nexus and compare it to whatever g2s models are out.
but the ol' evo definitely has been good to me.
I dont even see how u can compare a evo to a evo3d. I guess when quadcore comes out everybody will be saying "its not much of a jump from the evo3d".

Ditto that!
I just grabbed a shinny new Free Evo 4G from Best Buy to keep as a back-up for my other Evo. I've tried a lot of ROMS but keep restoring old faithful, Myn's 2.2 with Net/SBC kernel. It absolutely rocks!! I tether 1.2 gigs/day (netflix junkie here) via Easytether.
I have no need to reinvent the wheel, have the "Latest & greatest," or keep up with the Joneses. My Evo is lightning-fast, silky-smooth and leaves the "Energizer Bunny" in the dust.
Hey guys,
Due to a recent disagreement with Verizon (I said they suck, they said they don't), I will be switching over to Sprint.
The problem I have now is trying to pick a phone. Everyone keeps telling me get the Epic 4g Touch but there is something about it I don't like. I am drawn to the Evo 4g because it already has a developer base and cm7 support. I'm not a poweruser, I just like my phone to be snappy when I'm running a couple of apps. Is this phone even worth considering, or do you guys think it's kind of at the end of its life cycle and I should check out a different device?
Thanks for any responses!
Honestly the evo runs fine for what you are looking for, but considering you are signing a new contract with sprint you might as well try for a newer phone. If you don't like it return it within the 14 days or if you keep it for more and decided you still don't like it you can most likely sell/trade it for cash and evo 4g. Just my opinion, but right now the evo 4g does everything I want so I have no complaints.

Here's the problem....the evo is a great phone but its over a year old. Signing up with sprint means you won't be available for an upgrade for two years. By that time this phone will be extremely old and no Bueno. Now if u buy one for cheap off eBay or Craigslist then cool do that and ull be able to get an upgraded phone whenever the quad core lte phones come out next year. If not then get the newest greatest phone out right now cause atleast it won't be as out dated as the evo will be when ur next upgrade rolls around. I've heard great things about the epic 4 g touch and evo 3d and photon. This is just my opinion. I love my evo just looking down the road u know

go with the evo
yea i was at the same crossroad...evo 4g or 3d? i chose the 4g because of the screen size...im a movie watcher and i have pretty large hands so i needed the biggest screen with the cheap cost...now im a good rom flasher and my phone stays charged for more than 48 hours....ive learned alot about the evo from this site...its like the devs here cherish the evo more than anything lol so my advice....evo all the way
The htc evo 4g WAS the best phone that sprint has. Until the samsung galaxy s II came out and another i cant remember the name of.. there also is the evo 3d which is newer and has a better looking ui.. SO basicly i would go with one of those. but the 3d with the camera is just a video trick..
I have an EVO 4G but I've played with the Samsung Galaxy SII and I'd recommend it going forward. The phone is super light, the screen size is a bit larger, which you may not like, but it's also dual core and really snappy.

Not to disagree with ya, so don't get me wrong. Hardware wise, as in processors, screen resolution and such, I absolutely agree with your statement.
However, as far as the best phone on Sprint, it's still the OG Evo. Here's why, (IMHO) 1) best dev support of any device offered by sprint. 2) the og's radios are superior to the e4gt, and the 3d. 3) no hboot 1.5 problems like the 3d, and no jigs or Odin, like the e4gt.
In my opinion, formed from reading the development forums of nearly every high end device available, aside from 1 or 2 phones offered by other carriers, the E4G is the most complete well rounded phone. Sure there are devices with way faster dual core processors, tons more ram and system memory, but they all seem to be flawed. Either weak radios, crappy GPS, wifi, or Bluetooth, and some just have cheap craftsmanship.
We lucked out my friends. I doubt we will see another phone as well rounded and game changing as the Evo. I think HTC realised that by making a phone that is too good, they cant keep selling as many phones. People got the evo and held on to it. Thus slowing down the new phone upgrade cycle. I imagine that factors in to why the Sammy GS2's in the U.S. fall short of the international version.
I'm sitting on two upgrades right now and will be, 'till we get lte and (fingers crossed) quad core.
Just my opinion, point out the phone we have available that doesn't have any shortcomings compared to the OG and I'll go get one tomorrow.

I would get a iphone 4s anf sell it to buy another phone. Apple fans will give u like $400+evo for a 4s. I would say you should get a evo 3d. From my personal experience its just better than the og evo in every way but price. U wouldnt go wrong with a epic touch is samsung is ur thing but sense UI is better for everyday users.
