[Q] Phone went into "Safe mode" what use would that be? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

My phone froze so i did what i normally do and thats pull the battery, replace and reboot. While the phone was booting up i held down the vol key trying to not wake my girlfriend up since its quite early in the morning. Once booted back up i saw the words "safe mode" in the bottom left hand corner. Now i understand what safe mode is for the PC and have used this function many times before but i'm really not sure why and what use it would give to our HD2. Could someone shed some light on what this might be good for on a mobile phone?
I also noticed that all my downloaded apps are missing while in safe mode but after a normal reboot the safe mode disappeared and my apps restored to normal. For reference there is a picture below of what I'm talking about. I'm using the latest version of CoreDroid if anyone cares to know. I took the screenshot using DroidExplorer since i did not have any access to my downloaded apps and even after i downloaded a new screenshot app from the market it would not see it in the list or the gallery. Only after a reboot could i see and use my downloaded apps again.
On a side note while using DroidExplorer the hue of my wallpaper seemed really off. Does anyone know of a fix for this?

So I take it no one else has held down the volume button during boot? Every time it goes into safe mode. I would really like to know what use this would be on a cell phone so if anyone has any clue, please let me know.

My volume buttons got stuck once and it happened to me too, if I understood what I read correctly it is a tool to allow you to start up the phone if an app has caused it to become unresponsive. I am assuming that it is more for people developing apps to be able to start up and remove their mistakes.

This was kind of what i gathered because when you run in safe mode all user apps disappear. Well i though it would be useful if I ever made a mistake and installed something that messed my phone up but your explanation of being designed for developers makes perfect sense. Thanks!!

[Long]Trials and Tribulations of my G1. Issues and Insight.

WARNING This is a long post describing various events of my G1 and things I was going through, so Im basically doing a dump of my thoughts and possible reasonings to put everything I can report, case it is a ROM, Hardware, or Software flaw somewhere or just user error. But since this forum is about feedback for devs or rom providers =)
Ok I dont know where to begin with this post. Last night my G1 needed a wipe. Why? Cause all it did was reboot over and over not getting past 1st home screen, then finally android screen. What happened before this? All I have of the things going on during that time frame was this:
(Now before the below stuff, earlier that day, Quest Live glitched on me, and when I was at the home screen, I tried to scroll left and right and it got stuck half way, which WORRIED me since I thought the touch screen was messed up. To my luck after a reboot and iso alcohol rub down on screen, it was fixed. Tho only after I unplugged it from the car charger (Which seems to really make the G1 % battery jump in record speed.. glicth?) Or Power Manager issues? Tho this wasnt the updated one, so the new one may have fixed the issues the dev said power manager was causing.
I plugged in the usb to a ubuntu running PC. To charge it, thus triggering Power Manager. Same time, I was trying to install SnapPhoto, which it downloaded, but didnt install, I was also noticing abit of lag, So I ran task manager to turn off some apps running in background, Camera, Gallery, Gaming Buzz Widget, Weather app Widget, Calender. (Then as I rem.. I tried to update AdFree when the new version came out.. it didnt install but same time when I tried to load it, it just came up black.. sign of a bigger issue maybe?)
After that of course couple of them came back. Then I tried to change the volume using the side button, It didnt respond, The on screen worked fine tho. So I decided ok, time to reboot fresh on the phone. Rebooted, Then it loaded to home screen before radio signal, then rebooted. After getting tired of not booting, (I had unplugged it from the USB btw which at 1st kept the charging light on before I rebooted it. ) I pulled the battery out. Which MAYBE I pulled it out at the wrong time during the android screen. Cause after that and I put it back in, all it did was goto the G1, then Android cycling screen, but no longer went to the home screen to try to load. Then was too late for this trick, but the Safe mode attempt. Which MAY have worked when it made it to the home screen, but once it was on Android only, safe mode didnt load at all. Just endless stuck on Android. So I had to wipe 1st then I reapplied the JF 1.51 update.zip to fix it and get the G1 to turn on again and boot.
Advice tip: If you can still boot to the home screen "somewhat" next time it cycles, try holding "Menu" in to have the G1 bypass any apps and load into safe mode, which may allow you to uninstall or fix whatever the issue is.
To my surprise. The Apps when the G1 started installing again went to the SD card. (I do not use apps2sd, Only Lucids orig) Now thats when I noticed more hell.. I went to the market to look at "My Downloads" and WHAM, the 10 apps it auto downloaded (Which I guess was a sync) are the only ones in the My Download section.. nothing from my past downloads.. Which is 110 more apps.
Advice tip: Use Atrackdog to "Export" your database to a text file and keep that on your PC. This way if ANYTHING happens, you least know which apps to look for.
Advice Tip: Upon reflection I probably should have made a nandroid backup after 1.51 was smooth. So if you havent, Id suggest looking at it) I know I will once Im set back up.
So now I am left with a interesting ponder. I msged Lucid to see if his scripts would allow me to use my 2GB which had my 1.51 data on it and somehow relink it to the G1 and have everything restored, then recopy to the 4GB which is my current one. But chances are I need to 1 by 1 install again. (Anyone know how you get apps back that arent on the market anymore? Extract from the SD card maybe?)
Anyways now I am wondering, If you install too much to the G1, will it in the end cause a problem? Im not a dev so I dont know how that all works with the ROM builds. But that wouldnt be good news if you have 129 apps, things could start messing up. (Tho not sure if that was a cause for any of the above)
Another thing I learned, if you have a GOOD screen protector on the G1 (Not the one it came with) and it smears up, or gets smudgy it seems it may interfere with the response of the touch screen. Ive notice if the screen thinks its being pressed in, a app could hang, lock up or choke the G1 to where it fixes itself by doing a reboot. Now that sounds odd that the G1 is sensitive to smudges or oil from your hands (If you had a humid hot day). Anyways fixed that with iso rubbing alcohol and a soft wipe cloth. Then rebooted.
Now my next task is to 1: Find out if my Cache since the wipe is running on the SD still, or if its on Internal. The app "Move Cache" I hear could do that, but I heard it messes up market, maps etc.. so not what I wanna do atm. Then I just gotta see if I can restore apps from SD using a app or terminal, which I am studying now, but just wanna end this post for now.
Will post more as I get around to it. Maybe I can restore the market cache manually.
do you still experiencing the touch screen error problem after all the steps you have taken? because i have the same problem. sometimes when i use touch screen to switch screens, the screen get stuck in the middle and shaking. i also cannot select anything correctly by touching. and i've read from various forums that this has something to do with the charger / charging process. i think that my problem occured because i charged using usb cable to my computer. because i never done that before (i usually charge my phone using a wall charger) and when i did, the problem happened.
How I fixed it? I turned off the G1, used rubbing alcohol with a tissue to gently wipe the screen off and clean it. Then turned back on and it was fine.

Safe mode

So I was playing with my nexus s and the screen shut off with out the old TV animation and woke it back up and I see SAFE MODE in the bottom left.
I rebooted and was back to normal..... has anybody else had this problem and how did it happen? What caused it?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I had the same thing happen to me last night as well. I'm not sure what caused it? Like you I rebooted my phone, and I was all good again.
Happened to me yesterday when booting the phone. Rebooted and everything went back to normal.
that happened to me when i had my HTC Hero CDMA
i never figured out what it was.
I had this same thing on my myTouch 3G. If you held down a button while starting up it put the
Phone in Safe Mode. It basically made all non-default applications not work. Did you guys try starting it up while holding a button?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
I had the same thing. I remember I was trying to boot into bootloader with the down volume key. That didn't work but I think that may have been the cause. Of course I now know it's the up button that does it all.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Hi guys from what i have read the safe mode is in case you get app. that starts to act up my making your phone go nuts you can go in to safe mode by turn off your phone and while turning it on hold the menu button you go in to safe mode that way no third party app. are loaded so you can delete the app. that gave you the trouble that's what i have seen on the nexus s!!!!!!
good deal. I remember that I was wiping the screen off on my shirt while booting. Must have been what caused it. Useful info for the future for sure.
It happens when you turn on teh phone and half way through the boot process you hold the volume buttons

[Q] Nexus S 1st day and its froze, cant unlock

Hi guys, having a problem with the nexus s that i have just got today.
Installed an app for getting wallpapers, something like FLickir HD wallpapers or something.
Set a wall paper, then browsed on through others.
Phone soft rebooted, and now the screen and bottom buttons are totally unresponsive. No idea why, and no matter how many times i battery pull etc i cant get it sorted.
Any help would be a great help.
Can you get into recovery mode?
Pull battery. Wait 30 seconds. Put battery back in.
Press and hold volume up button, then press hold power on button.
Phone should enter Fastboot mode.
Use volume keys to highlight the recovery option.
Use power button to select it.
Once the phone starts to reboot you'll quickly see a little box pouring an arrow into an android figure, hold the power button, then press hold the volume up key. Timing (on my phone) is important, you need to be holding the power key first, then get the volume up key while the box and arrow are still there.
If you get to the Android and triangle, you might still be able to do the two buttons to get into recovery, but it doesn't work on my phone; some reports on various blogs say it does, though.
Once in Recovery, you should be able to pick the option to factory wipe/reset the phone. This will wipe the ROM space and reset the phone, but it won't touch the sdcard stuff. You'll have to set up the phone again, but that's not too difficult.
Just trying it now. Didnt realise about the 2nd stage of the power button and volume up. Just rebooting now after the reset.
Seems to have worked with the phone setup.
Will all my apps be gone?

Yes, all apps from the Market will be gone.
So will your wifi settings, user accounts, EVERYTHING, except the sdcard contents.
You're basically putting the non-sdcard part of the phone back into the same state it was in when you took the phone new out of the box.
I'd recommend appbrain.com for your phone to have an easy way to reinstall apps if something like this has to be done in the future.

Ah, so much the better! It should just sync up after logging in with his account.
I thought I had to acknowledge I want that feature when I first set up the phone.
Either way, Appbrain still a neat combo of website discovery and phone installation, I find it very useful.
Ive been using app brain and the apps are being re installd.
However some of them that are in my list on the webpage, are not showing up in the app on my device. Any ideas why?

No, not sure, but if they're on your webpage, just click onto their links for the full app description page, then and cancel install if it's there as an option, and then install again.
this happend to me with two phones
Last night after my phone froze after downloading a wallpaper, after an initial pull of the battery the phone booted but the screen was unresponsive to touch, after I tried a hard reboot, with no success, I took it to best buy today and got a replacement. (Phone 1)
I Did system updated asked by the OS after i turned the phone on. (Downloaded update via wifi, and no sym card was in the phone) After Boot it was unresponsive to touch just like the last one. (Phone 2)
I went to Best Buy again and got a 3rd Nexus S. Have not done the system update and the phone is working well....for now
Any thoughts??????

My phone booted completely with sense loaded in less than 2 seconds this morning

It was the weirdest thing ever. I literally mean 2 seconds.
The phone was COMPLETELY off. It showed the short sprint boot animation at lightning speed and went immediately to my lock screen. I proceeded to enter my code to find sense already loaded and most of my background processes/notifications loaded or loading.
I had to share this with the community. I don't know how it happened.
I'm running stock, rooted gingerbread without a custom kernel.
When I turned off my phone, I did it by holding the power button and shutting it down. Normally I just pull the battery.
Also, it normally takes about 3-4 mins for my phone to boot up just to the lockscreen (it stays at the "4G" animation frame).
Has anyone else had this lightning fast boot?!
You probably have fastboot on lol. You'll find it in settings, then applications.

Dirk beat me
Yeah, I see it is checked.
I didn't even know fastboot existed. Is this a new gingerbread feature?
Why wouldn't this ALWAYS be on by default?
And I wonder why it hasn't done it before?
I've been on gingerbread for about a week now, and I haven't checked that box manually...hmmm

Yes its a GB feature. I don't use it as it doesn't play nice with all apps. I'd rather do a normal reboot.

Yeah your phone wasn't completely off. It sort of hibernates but still keeps things in memory. Turn it off and pull the battery. It won't boot up as fast
I really wish they named it something else, like "QuickBoot" or whatnot. Now it just creates confusion when talking to users about fastboot (what you can use while in the bootloader).
Also, this feature seems to make it harder for people to reboot into recovery if they used to use power + voldn. Since the phone isn't all the way off, it won't put you into the bootloader. -- Easily worked around by turning it off, or using an app or using adb reboot recovery, of course.

I couldn't agree more!! As soon as they mentioned fastboot I immediately became confused: That's an option in the bootloader......?!! hahah
This would also explain why I've had trouble sometimes entering the bootloader using the keystrokes.
And yes, I did a battery pull, and it takes the normal 3-4 mins to boot.
Thanks again for the replies guys! Really did explain a lot! I did a search and nothing came up, so hopefully this can be used as a reference!
You'll want to uncheck that, if you ever want to be able to boot into recovery

or use quick boot from the market.

I have an LG-D801 running 4.4.2 kernal 3.4.0 and software D80120a. I also have and use TWRP for recovery. Ever since I rooted my phone and installed this rom, everything has been perfect! That was about 4 months ago. I have and use lots of apps, most of which I have been using for years without any issues. Lately I have been finding my phone off in my pocket for some reason. It now is happening maybe 6-10 times a day which is really getting annoying.
The LG G2 battery doesn't come out so not like it got loose. I have tested it by sitting on the desk lightly and checking it later to STILL find it turned off. So I know I'm not bumping it. I have tried an app killer to kill apps before turning off the screen but it still seems to happen. The phone is still relatively new so I doubt it's hardware, I baby my phones.
Any ideas for ways to make it STAY on without flashing a new rom? Or maybe ideas for how to diagnose what is shutting it down?
(I am looking for ideas and useable feedback, please don't respond that my phone has hardware issues and needs to be replaced!)

Are you sure it's actually off and not just asleep and not waking up. I've never seen a generally working phone turn itself off. On another device we called it the SOD (Sleep of Death) and required a long press on the power to reboot. It's most likely a rooted app like something Xposed related perhaps.

How can I tell the difference? Basically I press the power button once quickly to turn the screen on and it doesn't come on. I hold it for maybe 3 seconds and get the booting up stuff. I am guessing if it was sleeping I'd have to hold it much longer?

Yeah bud, that's a new one on me. Do you have any root apps that could be the cause? Like Xposed.

Thanks for the help. After reading your previous post, I decided to remove GravityBox KK and Xposed. I was using it because I find it annoying that when I plug in my phone at night, it turns on my screen. Not a big deal...
I also use SuperSU and LuckyPatcher which both use root. The only other thing I can think of is that I semi-recently upgraded my Play Store (v4.8.19 using Lucky Patcher) which I had some troubles with. It kept saying my /system was out of space and for some reason, even with root, it tells me acces denied when changing stuff inside the /system such as boot animation.
so... just an update. It's still doing it even after I uninstalled all the apps that need root. I really wish there was a log or something (like Windows) to tell me why it keeps turning off!
I have noticed it seems to happen much more often if I am texting somebody even though I'm using the default app for messages. It literally was turning off after every message I sent early before the other person was able to reply for about 5 messages in a row.
