Running windows 8 on my Main System and was having trouble gettin sickbeard and couch potato to run on startup.
In windows 7 I accomplished it by putting shortcuts in
C:\Users\Account Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up\
The same folder exists in Windows 8 but placing a shortcut there wasn't working for Sickbeard and buggy for Couchpotato and SABnzb.
However there is an equivalent folder for Metro:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Progams\Start up\
After placing the shortcuts there it is working perfectly.
(Tried task scheduler to launch SB, CP and SAB but that also didn't work)
is this still working? I am having trouble getting sickbeard or couchpotato to launch on startup on the Release Preview
EDIT: Yes it is thanks. I was having problems finding that folder but putting it into chrome's URL bar worked for some reason.
BUMP: Turns out it's not working.. turned on computer this morning and CP + SB didn't start. :S tis a damn shame.
try adding a reg entry here...
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
add the program you want to load to that list and see what happens, im in the middle of something at the mo and cant try it but it should work just fine.
note you only should use one of them
CU Current users, for user specific programs
LM Local machine, for all users

Thanks for the information, this makes them appear in the Startup tab of Task Manager, but doesn't make them start on boot :S I believe it's something to do with the apps themselves rather than Windows 8. Maybe it changes the way it does things or something :S

Here's the new version of PointUI.
New Features
- Weather update frequency now includes "Manual".
- Customisation (yes, we are Aussies so spell it with an 's'): Media Player - ok, a little techy at this stage, but you can now specify the path of your media player in the registry:
- In the key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Pointui\Home\{your version} (i.e. version = 1.01b) create a new String value called App.Path.Media
- You can include in your path {Windows}, {Programs}, {ProgramFiles} which will get replaced with your device specific folders but if you do use them then don't start the path with a backslash
- The path can be to a shortcut or exe, and include spaces, but don't use any quotes
- An example value is: {Windows}\wmplayer.exe
- You don't need to restart Home for this change to kick in
- Customisation: Email account
- You can specify a store name in a String value called App.Email.StoreName
- This will then launch to the specified inbox instead of Outlook mail
- The store name is CASE SENSITIVE
- It doesn't appear to break if you enter a dodgy store name - just doesn't do anything Smile
- Unread message count indicator will be count of TOTAL emails across all accounts
- You NEED TO RESTART Home for this one to kick in
- Customisation: Tasks and Calendar
- You can specify an alternative app for Tasks and Calendar using the registry keys App.Path.Tasks and App.Path.Calendar
- If the alternative app requires command line args then you can supply them with the corresponding keys App.Path.Tasks.Args and App.Path.Calendar.Args
- You don't need to restart Home for this change to kick in
- Customisation: Phone
- To use an alternative dialer (or if your device has the problem of when you click the Phone icon it freezes for 8 seconds, then you can specify an alternative dialer (or any app really) using the registry key App.Path.Phone
- You don't need to restart Home for this change to kick in
- Customisation: Lock Screen
- To use an alternative lock screen application you can set the registry key App.Path.LockScreen. This should provide a workaround for Smartphone users who cannot get out of our lock screen.
- You don't need to restart Home for this change to kick in
Changes
- Clicking calendar icon from Home screen will go to the day view instead of week.
- When browsing applications, sometimes you would see a file called "icon" that didn't launch anything - it's actually on your device and is a real file but is hidden, so hidden files are now excluded from the list.
- Updated fonts to include extended characters.
Bug Fixes
- Support for special folder locations other than the default English ones.
- Phone numbers now include all characters in addition to standard digits.
- When the Phone icon is clicked and there are no phone calls in the history it now works correctly instead of showing a grey bar at the top.
- Japan added to weather locations.
Known Issues
- Not enough time in the day.
- Red Bull wearing off.
- VGA
- Devices without Phones
- Recurring Appointments
- Uninstall - we'll need to get the uninstall sorted out soon. All Pointui apps have a command line switch -uninstall that will prompt it to remove itself, registry settings etc, so you can use Update Manager to uninstall Home (through it's interface), and then get rid of Update Manager with command line. That will still leave the left soft key reverting to Phone, but pretty much everything else should be gone.
Head over to www.pointui.com for more info.

Will finally get a chance to test now - was trying to wait for initial bugs to get fixed... Heard lots of great reviews on this app!
Thanks for the changes.
I will try this evening (german time)
This version introduces new problems. I'm enjoying SPB Backup like never before
Anyone had success removing this after install I have tried uninstalling via phone/ computer and it removes it from the list but does not remove the program. I would love not to have to hard reset.

Jesus it puts the lotion on its skin. Where being held captive by a piece of software gotta love that. Talk about nazi'ism feels like AOL for mobile devices go ahead install if you dare will require a format if u want to get rid of us though.
Easy to remove if you do it the right way. You would have found this if you would have looked on the forums for the program.
To Remove .Home
Drop back to the default Windows Mobile Today Screen
Start > Programs > .Update Manager
Pointui Products > Home > 1.0 Free > Uninstall
Perform a Soft Reboot after the uninstall and Home will be removed.
To finish the uninstall, use Remove Programs to uninstall the update manager, you can delete the installation folder if you so desire and the icon form the start menu.
To bad this procedure does not work on the 6800 there is no uninstall option in the update manager.
Custom Program?
Can someone make a program that you don't have to go in the registry and make it easier to change on the fly.

HMMMMMMM maybe it was the version I downloaded then I even tried downloading a new version today reinstalling and uninstalling no dice still for the uninstall method posted (other then manual delete). Oh well.
Everyone,
This is one of my first posts. I have been reading the threads on this and cannot make heads or tails of what's going on. I have a Shift for eval purposes and after playing around with it, I think it's a pretty amazing device. HTC has crippled the phone capability in the US versions because they haven't certified it for voice use with the FCC yet. If we can access "file explorer" and some of the other features of WM6, I think a lot can be done to modify it or even to use it for voice. Has anybody made any headway as far as a new ROM that enables all of this functionality?
No
nobody has yet developed the crack. The reason is because nobody has the machine yet. Can u comment a bit about the battery life. Is it very disappointing?
well, now that several people actually have the device in-hand, could somebody please confirm that the ability to expose full WM6 exists as described by Pawel062:

hmm dont really understand the last part about snapvue. the snapvue for athena is snapvue from shift with a small mod to re enable the softkeys and start menu. it will work on shift and also re enable the soft keys and start menu making the shift's wm6 "Full" again

greetz,

what about athena projects rom? that rom is actually from shift right?
snapvue is actually a today plugin pretty much. it hides the soft keys and start menu of the original wm6. then from the plugin u have access to messaging, settings, and other basic stuff.
this is ment so u use vista but with only 2hrs max battery on vista many people would like to use the less power hungry wm6. i am working with paul from modaco.com on re enabling the full wm6 by putting a modded dll that will unhide the start menu. after that ull be able to get into file explorer and get a reg editor to re enable the soft keys.
heres the challlenge:
--no usb port like regular htc phones to sync the shift and get the dll on their. only usb host
--no bluetooth in snapvue/wm6 side
--no wifi in snapvue/wm6 side
--no ir in wm6 side
--vista device central doesnt see the wm6 side
--cant save files from email to windows folder
and i cant remember now the other blockades. i will continue working on it though.
Seems like that there is some kind of file transfer, it uses it when you install a certificate in shift control center, but how to crack it open or replicate the process for other files, and then execute the file on snapvue site ....
Think its time for a "taskforce thred" where all info is posted so everyone can work on it.
Sounds a lot more difficult then I first imagined....
(No BT??? OMG! had no idea!)
Sounds like I have to be a bit more patient...
This doesnot sound like it´s gonna be solved in a couple of days....
It´s great that you´re workin on it guys!
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah
thanks Pawel062, I appreciate your efforts in trying to find a way to get this to work!
Just saw if you edit a contact and then try to attach a picture, you can browse the WM6 folders.
Unfortunately you can only see the pictures, because it's using the picture manager from HTC..
Silly thought: The miniUSB connector on the dongle formally is only meant to provide additional power to devices that otherwise would not be detected (External Harddrives etc). Would it be a silly thought to assume that the same miniUSB port could somehow allow us to access the SnapVue part? The miniUSB port is located at the back next to the cable leading back to the Shift.
I hadn't even noticed that.
I just plugged mine in for the first time, the only drivers Vista installs are for a Generic USB Hub and a USB to Ethernet Adaptor. There doesn't seem to be anything else hidden in there.
If anyone needs anything tested on a shift dont hesitate to ask. Full WM6 functionality would be greatly appreciated and would turn snapview from a gimick into a usefull tool.
OK so thanks to Michael who commented on Browsing using Contacts and Pictures, I managed to gain access to the Windows Mobile File Explorer and other software on the device.
First step is to create a new email.
From the menu Insert - Picture.
Using the browse capability go to the Windows folder
Locate Start Menu and press Ctrl C
Browse to Settings
Press Ctrl V
Go to Snapvue homescreen and goto Settings
Start Menu will be visible and you can then access File Explorer etc.
Hope this helps....

Great! Any possibilty to enable blocked things like office or is it not installed?
Also in my limited investigations, I have managed to almost access Windows Vista from the Windows Mobile side.
Using Resco's Explorer with its Network Access functionality, I performed the following.
Under Windows Vista, run the ShagCtrl application.
Install a Certificate, this can be any file you like.
You will see the progress bar appear and drop up and down. If you listen you will hear the sound of a new device being added.
Do NOT click OK when prompted as this will remove the device.
If you load up Device manager, you will see an "NDIS shared Internet connection" (or something similar) appear under network connections.
If you open CMD and run an IPConfig, you will see that this connection has an IP Address of 192.168.160.102 and a gateway and DHCP server of 192.168.160.1.
From the Windows Mobile side, load Resco Explorer and goto Menu - File - Network - Map Drive
In the dialog that appears, you should see Computers near Me (or similar) and under here should be your Vista machine.
If you share a drive, or select the Vista computer and put \c$ on the end, it should try to connect.
This is as far as it gets me so far. Was a late one, but I couldnt get it to actually connect.
So close yet so far.
In Addition, if you try to run a cab file it will error. This is because HTC have remove the Open command file association for Cab files.
Using your favourite WM registry editor goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Cabfile\Shell\Open\command\.
Under Default type
wceload.exe "%1" /nodelete
cab files will now install correctly.
Hope this helps...
Hi,
I ama anew user of Shift. I am did not understand clearly what did you mean about full WM6 or 6.1. Knows somebody how can we have a full WM6 on it? Pls help me I really need a full WM6 system also.
Thx.
Ok, so I've accessed the Start menu using Vs1979s instructions, and I've found that Windows Live messenger is on the device and works ok. I'd like to try and install Opera, but I need a registry editor that isn't a CAB file in order to add back in the registry key to support CAB files - can someone point me in the direction of one?
Thanks,
Dave

How did you load Resco Explorer on Snapvue?
I just flashed my phone with NFSFAN's Custom rom there are no predefine programs under the program list. I want to add GPS toggle and Igo8 icon that's installed on my storage card for easier access but I can't browse to it. Seems I can only add what's installed under Windows/Programs
To the best of my knowledge your problem is a generic one that has nothing to do with NFSFAN's ROM.
Everytime you flash a new ROM, generic or custom it wipes clean your windows start menu ( to "factory" state)
The programs installed on your SD card are still there, your just missing the shortcuts.
1. Use a file explorer of your choice and navigate to storage card/program files and all your installed programs should be there inside folders. The rest applies to the generic File explorer that comes with windows but any other program should be similiar.
2. go into a program folder, find the exe for the program (it's usually the one with the icon for the program). right click it with your stylus and select copy.
3. Next select menu (lower right soft key), under edit select "Paste shortcut"
4. Right click the shortcut, select either "cut" or "copy" (hint: using copy and leaving the shortcut allows you to skip the previous steps next time you flash a new ROM!!)
5. Navigate (using the up key) to Windows/start menu/program files and paste the shortcut there, for games there is a further directory. Also you can now rename the shortcut if you want.
6. Now open up the "all programs" soft key on the program tab of M2d, or select add and the program from you SD card should now be on the list.
For IGo8, I use TomTom. TT installs automatically when you insert the SD card into the ppc. After flashing a new ROM I just take my SD card out and then reinstall it. I am not sure if IGo8 works the same way or not but if the above steps prove frustrating for that, give it a shot.
It's a pain to go through this everytime you flash. It would be great if there was a tool to scan your SD card for programs and automaticaly install the proper shortcuts. There is none to the best of my knowledge. Then again, no one ever gets rewarded for being lazy.
Have fun, and if your new to this (especially flashing new ROMS), read...read...and read.
Best of luck
Wow, that's some detailed info. Thanks
I haven't tried your method yet, but I just remember that GPS toggle is actually a today plugin, NSFANS takes up the entire today screen, therefore it isn't visible.
I usually toggle my gps on before starting Igo and I get instant Sat lock.
As far as Igo8 Vs TT, I have both but I like the interface of Igo better. I don't have to reinstall anything after I flash. I just go to the Igo8 folder in my Storage card and execute the program. It runs off the storage card, there's nothing to install.
Cool, I've been meaning to try IGo myself sometime.
Not being able to use normal today plugins is a turn off for some. Only having one calendar line is another (M3d has a calendar tab). It's not NFSFANS's fault, that's Touch-flo 2d (Manila 2d). It is more a plugin itself than a whole new UI, it started on the diamond, was released on the Opal and Jade (Touch 3g) phones and ported to our devices by the devs here at XDA.
I love it personaly, it offers most users everything they need without going too deep into the actual winmo interface.....which is not to "touch" friendly.
I think a workable solution might be to see if you can put a shortcut to GPS toggle on the programs tab.
In the developement and Hacking section several devs were working on an m2d/today toggle that lets you toggle back and forth. There is also another app that tries to use the soft keys. Of course if you like M2d but need more than one prog tab, search "m2d operator tab" on this site. It is fully customizable and allows you to basically have 2 program tabs.

If M2d proves to be not for you, I suggest using the old today screen with schens HTTC customizer in place. It's worth it's weight in gold as well. I was using it untill M2d came out.
Cheers,
well assuming you're using his newest one all you have to do is go to the program you want in the file explorer, tap and hold it, and then just tap "send shortcut to programs".
ehh, I just flashed my phone with Dette 2D v2.3 today. I'll mess with it for a few days and try something else until I find the one that feels good to me.

Don't you need to use astrogps launcher with iGO? I'm using NFS 1.25 and I need some sort of priming software for iGO and Tomtom, is there something else you are using?
I only use google maps (on my M2D search tab), and TomTom while driving.
I use no other program to prime at all.
I travel coast to coast with my job, I just use the search tab, or launch TomTom (never in the same order, sometimes only one or the other), and presto.....a fix within 10 seconds.
As I said in another thread, I was showing off my phone to my FO one day and let google maps run while we were departing Montreal. It showed us going down runway 28, turning eastbound and crossing the St. Lawrence. The only reason it quite was we were going to fast for google maps to update through the data connection. Later in cruise (at 23,000 ft) I launched TomTom, it was confused as heck (didn't know what road we were on!!!!), but it did show our proper Lat/Long (I confirmed it with the aircraft's FMS).
Been running smooth for a while, never a problem getting sats or a quick fix.
That was a helpful explanation for me too. I'm a noob and using your steps I now have Skyfire in my Start Menu. Many thanks !!!
These are my requests that I have which would actually "complete" my perfect HD2... if any members here would like to contribute some info as to how I may go about and fulfill them, then I would have much gratitude. Thanks
-Aside from the volume control that MysticGenious posted along with his taskbar, is there any other cab or registry change that will allow me to change my volume in increments of 1 as opposed to 3 bars each time? I am familiar with the paid app, but I do not want to go that route.. If mysticGenious created something that works when you use his taskbar, then I'm sure someone else has created something.
-Take the application "FootPrints" for example... Unless I have that activated on my tab screens, I am unable to create a shortcut so that I can save it on as a quicklink. This is the same with the HTC Calender App and any other tab application. If its not active in the Tab menu then the shortcuts doesn't exist. Is there a workaround? I would like to use Foot Prints, but I only want it as a quicklink, NOT as a Tab folder. I have already tried activating the tab and creating the shortcut to the quicklinks, but as soon as i removed it from the Tab Menus, it disappeared. There has got to be a way for this to happen. Cause I mean the program is there, but for some reason it only works if its active in Tabs.
-Transformers... I have tried reinstalling the Transformers cab but that didn't work. I just want to be able to click the Transformers shortcut and be able to select either 1 or 2 and then the movie instantly pops up. I have the movies saved on my sd card now, but because i moved them out of the SD card and onto my computer at one point in time, the link that connected them is no longer there. Basically I have all the components, I just need some guidance on how to make the shortcut link and work again... I'm assuming that i have to direct the file via registry editor "Total Commander" or something, I am just confused when it comes to that stuff on my HD2
and believe it or not, thats actually the only issues I have left with the phone, I'm sure that someone has a suggestion, or knows an answer... thanks a lot guys
HI, i have seen on this WM6.5 that i can't add any program (ie one thats not say google maps or one of those big companies)
i can run the program via file manager and clicking the application .exe
the phone still wont see the application as a program.
i had a jasjam before and the prgrams i am trying to add worked fine but now on 6.5 cant do this.
the only way is to run these apps, well not run but to get a short cut, is on a program like CHome but then i move away from HTC sense start up display that is nicer looking.
like i said the programs work fine, just can see them in programs.
anything that will help?
cheers
have you posted a shortcut to your windows\start menu\programs\
I'm running 6.5 and any time I have a program installed on my sd card or trying to run an .exe from the storage card (or even if the .exe is just in another folder) thats what I do and it shows in my start menu or whatever subfolder I put it in in the start menu.

Yeap, in programs folder as an .exe, other folders like goggle maps are there too. The programs still don't show or work. Should i not try and get an .cab version? since looking into this takes you into trying to understand a pda rather than a PC. The .exe files still cant be seen, i have to run them via file explorer, although now loaded a short cut via button strokes so am using that to make the task a little easier.
I ran a .cab file on another program and found it distributed files with icons and other th9ngs that seem to integrate better into the host rather than an .exe
Also been looking at all the apps these phones can have its amazing.
I have one on my phone that can change a set of traffic lights in my city!
With authorisation of course, its my job, just saying how the PDA has really started to take off. become the real modern Swiss army knife.
