Hi, terribly sorry if this is a repost but I've searched all over general and don't see an answer.
I've seen posts on other sites that state the t-mobile defy can be used for att 3g but will not have the 1900 band, is this true?
In that same thread I saw someone claiming that you can get both. On gsm arena I see that some defy's should have 850/1900.
What version supports both the 850/1900 bands for 3g?
Thank you,
I've brought this up in another thread and there was no reply. From what I read there is two issues here. First is the hardware and then the ROM you flash your defy with (firmware). They both need to support the frequency. I suspect the hardware is the key.
So if your phone hardware does not support a frequency I don't think you can switch it by any firmware. (This is all about 3G by the way, Defy is quad-band for 2G, GPRS, and supports all 2G frequencies.). I think Defy UK is 900/2100 for 3G on T-Mobile.
This could be wrong so I hope some expert will reply to confirm it - and perhaps tell us how we can check what frequency our Defy hardware/firmware supports!?
Could you try to read this forum
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1598301
Thanks for the reply, it's a long thread on that forum and talks about just about anything (not specific to Defy + 3G). But I had read it before and had another quick look at it again today.
One thing I couldn't find was how to check what 3G frequencies your Defy has Firmware/Hardware. Anyone ?
XT535 no 3G (WCDMA 1900)
I recently bought the Defy XT535, and I didn´t take note on what frequencies did it worked on.
I have read on the thread dedicated to update the XT535 from GB to ICS that some people have problems with their 3G connection working after the update, and I think it has to do with the chinese SBF file.
I´ve also read in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11176044 you can fix your 3G connection by flashing a new SBF file.
Unfortunately, I haven´t found a SBF file that can be flashed for my device that will fix my 3G. Anyone has solved this issue already and can give me a hand?
XT535 HW didn't support WCDMA 1900. http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_defy_xt535-4622.php
Changing baseband won't help.
Furthermore, that's thread was so old. They use "zip" patch to fix baseband, not .sbf (.sbf means to be only stock rom files.)
We now use Basebandswitcher to fix MB525-526 baseband easily.
I have been trying to get the 3G patch done with CM7, but when I do the Custom Recovery, install Zip, and I select the 850/1900 3G fix zip, I get a "Amend scripting is long longer supported......switch to Edify scripting... to get a working update package."
I see some people copy/paste files in certain directories manually...Can someone give me the rundown on this, It's very frustrating not having the Defy on 3G. And yes, I have tried all the basebands in the utility.
Thanks
Paul
Hey Paul,
So you're having 3g problem with cm7? Could I ask you which build you have installed (name of the zip file's ok)?
I haven't heard anyone using a 3g fix on cm7 for months and I mean almost never and maybe not since before the RC releases anyways. The proof is also that your patch doesn't work because is coded in amend and that means before cm7 and ClockWorkMod recovery v3.0..
But if it is still what you want to do, could you also post it here (attach it or give me a link for it) and I will have a look for you. Then I can either tell you where and how to replace files or even create a new patch that will work on newer CWM recovery.
Cheers.
Hey Al, Thanks a bundle, Like Ive said in another post, I've been dealing with mobile phone for a long time, and now when the tables have turned cause I feel like a n00b. LOL
I have the latest Cyanogenmod: CM7.1.0-jordan-signed. It's in my unlocked Defy which has the bands UMTS 900/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900 HSDPA. I need the 850/1900. I chose in the selector all the basebands that use this combo but nada. I even got help from my local carrier for firmware information, but even so I cant find that firmware anywhere. So i wanna try all my options before I call Motorola or flash my phone to stock and send it to get replaced, complaining that I cant use my network. My phone was purchased last Thursday.
So that's that. My phone also is a Euro Variant.
Cheers,
Paul
Here is the "patch" that won't run
Fix_3g_850.1900Mhz-signed.zip: 850, 1900MHz
http://www.mediafire.com/?31y36az6r2w8jws
In another Android Forum, they ran it on Cyanogenmod 7.1 using custom recovery and fix the solution. But it won't run from mine.
Paul
UPDATE: Another member from GrupoAndroid, re-built this for CM7, i ran it and didnt solve my issue.
Info
Hey Al,
Someone on another forum told me that to regain the 3G on my phone there is a Chinese ROM that fixes the band issue, have you heard of this?
Hey Paul,
I had a look and yes that patch is just the radio files and probably old ones because the patch was coded in Amend.
So I've made a new one in Edify that should work; I mean now install properly on your version on CWM recovery as I have no clue if this will really solve your 3G problems.
Before you install it though, either make a nandroid backup of your current build (recovery->backup/restore->backup (all)) OR simply make a copy of the whole bp_nvm_default folder located in /system/etc/motorola as a safety net.
Lastly, I would also suggest you to give a shot and the other patch (baseban139.zip) that I found here which apparently contains the same but most recent Defy radio files.
So flash either or and see how it goes...
I hope it fixes your problem and if it does; I charge one hit on the "Thanks button"
Cheers,
/ AL
Oki doke.....installing 3G fix attempt. (i did backup)
.....FAIL. No Service. Selected network unavailable.
No Voice nor Data.
Should I flash the baseband file you made over this or should I restore first?
I went ahead and did the baseband zip install,
Voice: Available
Data: EDGE
Any other suggestions? No 3G....
No thanks for me then... ;-) --> but I might remind you that i did put time into this for you; making the pach, the replies and all --> so it would be nice of you to recognize that somehow............
No sorry, none that I can think of anyway.
Try to ask on the main CM7 thread maybe...
I'm on telus having issue finding a radio that works well and 3g does not work just wondering if you could give me a hand I flash cm7.1 on the defy after rooting, all I get is a H on my data connection

Hi, I am one of the many owners of the u8800-51 on latinamerica. It is known that we will probably never have a gingerbread update for this device.. But there is a solution.. The Gingerbread custom ROMs for u8800pro do work for this model, and they are stable.
But there is a problem. u8800-51, my model, was designed to be compatible with quad-band GSM/EDGE and W-CDMA/HSDPA/HSUPA 850/1900/2100 MHz cellular networks.
u8800pro instead, has GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 - HSDPA 900 / 2100.
So, using a ROM for u8800pro in my u8800-51 will work and also with signal, but as the software for u8800pro is for HSDPA 900 / 2100 (and latinamerica uses frecuencies of 1900), I have signal and 2g, but 3g wont work.
I want to know if someone has enough knowledges to port the file "amss.mbn" file (wich is supposed to contain frequencies information) from u8800-51 to u8800pro, so we can use 3g on latin america networks. I will upload them here (the one for u8800-51 with the right frequencies and the one for u8800pro). I have already tried to port it, but I dont have so much knowledge.
The file size is very similar.
(The file size limit exceed the max permitted, so I will upload a txt file with links)
EDIT: I am not really sure if it is the amss.mbn file. Maybe it is a lib.
I'm bumping this, this would make the perfect addition to 8800pro custom roms, this is THE solution we (8800-51 owners)'re waiting for. What kind of platform is needed for deployment? I would be glad to take a look.
I really dont know how to do it. Thats why I am here. I have been comparing both files with a hex editor. They look very similar, but I dont know what do I have to edit for the frequencies. I tried searching for "GSM" in hex. I found the frequency values, so I edited them..
It didnt worked, just the brand logo when turning on.
I think maybe android system is detecting that this file is from u8800-51 and not from u8800pro.. any ideas?
Edit: I have found this thread: http://android.modaco.com/topic/335492-amssmbn-flashing/#entry1646004 Its from another device but maybe it will give us some clues.

I think that somehow amss.mbn is working with libqcril and ril libs
Yeah, definitely it is something in the libs. With some research, I got some "suspect" files. I dont have time to test them right know, but maybe someone else could.
They are u8800-51 files, so maybe using them when can use the 1900mhz frequencies.
List of the files that may contain the band information (attachment below):
*Lets see if there is someone brave enought to replace your original files for this ones to test the 3g connection.
Located at system/lib/
libwebcore.so
libril-qcril-hook-oem.so
libril-qc-qmi-1.so
libril-qc-1.so
libril.so
libreference-ril.so
libqmi.so
libfotatrigger.so
libfotaagent.so
libdsi_netctrl.so
libcne.so
Located at system/etc/
01_qcomm_omx.cfg
init.qcom.post_boot.sh
OperatorPolicy.xml
Any other ideas? Please tell me if one of these files has nothing to do.
I tried replacing all those lib files and the brand logo is shown, but android doesnt starts, it just get freezed on the entel logo. I just restored the system folder with clockworkmod and its okay again
I think we will have to test file by file, and when it stops starting up, we will know that we have to keep that file away.
**EDIT:
I replaced this files:
ibril-qcril-hook-oem.so
libril-qc-qmi-1.so
libril-qc-1.so
libril.so
libreference-ril.so
and my device starts normally, but I still get only 2g (edge)
**EDIT 2**
Now I replace this files:
libqmi.so
libfotaagent.so
and now my 2g (EDGE) is gone! There has to be something about this files.
any information about them?
**EDIT 3**
The file libqmi.so is the one making me loose 3g. Maybe there are the frequencies.
the only issue with the 8800pro's roms is the 3g? anything else isn't working? i'm so excited for the progress in the long waited rom for our -51
Yeah, thats the only bug. I have used it for a week.
I think we are near to the 3g solution.. See this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988557
I was missing a radio file, in the bin folder called rild. I replaced it with the u8800-51 android 2.2 file. The device booted, but i couldnt even get network or gsm signal. Also, in "about the phone", i get "baseband: unknown" and "imei: unknown" Maybe the important thing is this file. Maybe this file cant be replaced by a Froyo file. I will try to get the Huawei u9000 rild.
Any ideas?
thanks.

You0re using amss.mbn from stock U8800-51? and those libs?, i think we need ril libs from a stable gingerbread update (maybe huawei honor or vision, but with the right baseband).
I suggest to take some lib files from Huawei Honor roms because Honor has the same baseband of U8800pro.
I can upload a zip file containing the lib files you need.
You have only to ask!
Regards

No.. the amss.mbn file from stock u8800-51 is not working. It just shows the boot logo and doesnt loads android.
I now have the ril libs and amss.mbn from an u9000 (x6), which has the south america bands, but it didnt worked.
Huawei Honor is GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 - HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100
There is no 1900 HSDPA, so 3g wont work neither
I think its the end, i have tried everything, it just cant be done.
I'd love to see this happen. i'm on AT&T and would like to have 3G. I had it in another rom but I forgot which one.

You had 3g with another rom in u8800-51?? was it gingebread?
Yes. I remember updating to stock gingerbread to install roms, rooting, then installing one of the u8800pro roms but I can't remember which one. I'll go through them and see if I remember.
EDIT: Does anyone have the stock u8800-51 (Impulse 4G) rom by any chance? I deleted it a while back.
---------- Post added at 09:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:18 PM ----------
A little something that might help:
Honor with AT&T bands
I guess we'll just have to wait a while.
I will try I final test, trying different combinations of those ril libs.
I read this:
There was previuosly an issue were it was found that newer RILs (from ICS roms) did not work with older GB roms. The culprit was apparently having two extra files in the RIL flash (libreference-ril.so & libril.so) that are not compatible with different roms (ICS & GB).
So I would suggest that you get the files (libreference-ril.so & libril.so) from your actual rom & include them with the RIL you are trying. Hopefully it will work.

So I think I should try first just replacing libreference-ril.so & libril.so, and then, just replacing the other ril libs (restoring between the two replaces).
This will be the final test. I hope it works.
pd: about the stock rom.. I heard that it is posted on this forum.

Bump
Hi guys, I'm bumping this, I want to recover my 3g on gingerbread too
Fist time at this. I have read many threads, they have provided some help but not enough to make me feel confident.
I gather I need to first root the phone;
I downloaded Defy Rooter (Droid2root)- My virus protection says Rage against the cage is a trojan. Is this a false positive?
Assuming it is safe, how do I run it. It has 4 files; busybox, rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin, su, and Superuser.apk
Once it is rooted I need to change the baseband. - This is my problem with the phone. It was originally purchased as a Telecom New Zealand phone (not by me)
As it is I can use the phone only on 2G or 3G when in the main citys. I cannot get the extended 3G which covers most of the country.
Vodafone NZ uses: GSM/2G/GPRS 900/1800mhz WCDMA/UMTS/HSPA 900/2100mhz (Telecom NZ is 850/1900)
I gather I then use the baseband switcher Tool
How do I use this?
Stupid question-- Do I do all this from my PC with the defy plugged into the USB?
Phone info MB525
Android 2.2.2
Baseband info EPU93_u_00.59.02
Kernal version 2.6.32.9-ga8343de
[email protected] 12#1
Build 3.4.2-145
it has the Bayer Camera
I tried to avoid posting this and searched the forum many times but I still need help.
Thanks Ken
Surly someone can help.

You mean to ask how to change baseband right?
Ever try this yet? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745
And Defy with HSPA 850/2100 can't use HSPA 900, no matter what baseband you change. It's in hardware.

Thanks, Yes have seen this but I need to get root access first to get the files to send him.
Didn't you get your device rooted? Then look for SuperOneClick, easy to use but got false detect by antivirus so disable them first.

Have now got it rooted. Next step Base Band Switch
Question: Is the Base Band Switcher run from the Defy or from a PC
I can find plenty about it but this is not mentioned. Probably a stupid question.
Do I try any set up that has the required frequencies or do I need a set specific to my area ie New Zealand and Carrier Vodafone?
Thanks in advance
It's android app (apk) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745
Try finding your country and your baseband, or it could be any that work for you, just try.
Solved...hopfully. Need to leave the home area to confirm.
Thanks the assistance. I had all the required files, just had not worked out how to put them on the defy.
Now have CWM installed and baseband switcher.
Turns out my baseband was on Singapore/ Indonesia. Am trying the Cent Europe one. It looks like the correct bands I need 900/2100
We will see.
Thanks intemptesta
You got me onto the right track
This rom is made by ATX team, so all credits goes to them.
This rom is still in beta for 8800 pro, so expect bugs.

I try but that doesnt work, the problem is this: y have signal 2g/3g (i can recibe calls and sms even if i chose only wcdma) but when i go to state and then to status it says:
Mobile network type: unknow
Mobile network state: disconnected
the other fields are ok
the imei is the rigth one, the network show the carrier, service state is active, so basicly thats the problem, i cant use data but i can recibe calls and sms in 2g/3g
Downloading it now Thanks for sharing :highfive:
It works great, it's really good i love it. The only thing i found it's that the wifi works really slow for me :/
Im using a u8800-51, maybe that's why.
