[Q] How to set up my Defy for Vodafone New Zealand - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Fist time at this. I have read many threads, they have provided some help but not enough to make me feel confident.
I gather I need to first root the phone;
I downloaded Defy Rooter (Droid2root)- My virus protection says Rage against the cage is a trojan. Is this a false positive?
Assuming it is safe, how do I run it. It has 4 files; busybox, rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin, su, and Superuser.apk
Once it is rooted I need to change the baseband. - This is my problem with the phone. It was originally purchased as a Telecom New Zealand phone (not by me)
As it is I can use the phone only on 2G or 3G when in the main citys. I cannot get the extended 3G which covers most of the country.
Vodafone NZ uses: GSM/2G/GPRS 900/1800mhz WCDMA/UMTS/HSPA 900/2100mhz (Telecom NZ is 850/1900)
I gather I then use the baseband switcher Tool
How do I use this?
Stupid question-- Do I do all this from my PC with the defy plugged into the USB?
Phone info MB525
Android 2.2.2
Baseband info EPU93_u_00.59.02
Kernal version 2.6.32.9-ga8343de
[email protected] 12#1
Build 3.4.2-145
it has the Bayer Camera
I tried to avoid posting this and searched the forum many times but I still need help.
Thanks Ken
Surly someone can help.

Bump, Help please

You mean to ask how to change baseband right?
Ever try this yet? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745
And Defy with HSPA 850/2100 can't use HSPA 900, no matter what baseband you change. It's in hardware.

Thanks, Yes have seen this but I need to get root access first to get the files to send him.

Didn't you get your device rooted? Then look for SuperOneClick, easy to use but got false detect by antivirus so disable them first.

Have now got it rooted. Next step Base Band Switch
Question: Is the Base Band Switcher run from the Defy or from a PC
I can find plenty about it but this is not mentioned. Probably a stupid question.
Do I try any set up that has the required frequencies or do I need a set specific to my area ie New Zealand and Carrier Vodafone?
Thanks in advance

It's android app (apk) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745
Try finding your country and your baseband, or it could be any that work for you, just try.

Solved...hopfully. Need to leave the home area to confirm.
Thanks the assistance. I had all the required files, just had not worked out how to put them on the defy.
Now have CWM installed and baseband switcher.
Turns out my baseband was on Singapore/ Indonesia. Am trying the Cent Europe one. It looks like the correct bands I need 900/2100
We will see.
Thanks intemptesta
You got me onto the right track

Wildfire Radio Change

hi all,
already searched but could not find a definitive answer.
basically, i have a htc wildfire a3335 (850mhz version) and accidentally flashed to an a3333 froyo (2.2.1) rom, losing the 850mhz (my carriers primary network).
obviously i need to change the radio, but have had no success so need some help.
either
1)revert radio to telstra
2)downgrade and reflash with stock 2.1 telstra rom
3)somehow force the new OTA froyo update
i currently have a generic htc rom, but i don't use the phone much, so the stock locked rom will work fine for my purposes (don't need to root or anything, just make calls).
if anyone can help and is in the local area (melbourne, australia) i will pay well for their time.
thansk in advance,
josh

If you don't have a custom recovery installed your gonna have to wait for alpharev, or search for the telstra froyo ruu on shipped-roms.com (which I don't think exists).
If you do have one like CWM or AmonRa, you can check this tread, I think that there's a link for the "flashable" telstra radio so you don't go back to a branded version...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=955203
Edit: here's the link for telstra 2.1 http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...45.55.24_3.35.15.31_release_138758_signed.exe
If you don't have a custom recovery installed you can check this tread to downgrade to telstra stock... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=921752
If you need any more help just PM me...

thanks for that
i gave the noobs guide to downgrading another shot, seems to be downgrading now. its a tricky guide, not really for noobs, but my basic computer knowledge was enough to work it out. took about 45 minutes, mainly me being scared and paranoid
will post after the telstra ruu completes, then see if i can get the froyo OTA update (which i should have just been patient for in the first place )
phew! all done.
thanks very much for the downgrade guide, was a bit scary and needed a lot of concentration, but worked without a hitch.
long story short, if you want your telstra phone updated, be patient!
I have a Telstra phone that I upgraded to a stock WWE 1.37 ROM.
It works fine on the Telstra 3G network at high speed.
The frequency it operates on is dictated by the hardware, not the firmware.
However if you swap provider to say Optus, then it will switch to 2G operation as the Telstra phone hardware works at 850 Mhz (and others) while Optus netwrok runs at 900Mhz for 3G operation. Therefore the phone will drop back to the 2G frequencies and network and therefore run slower.
Go to shipped roms and select an HTC WWE rom (but not Froyo) and you will run at full speed. Likewise the custom ROMS will be fine also.

i dont think this is correct, 900mhz is optus's copy of telstra's country nextG network, called 'yesG' and is only for rural/remote areas
in most places optus etc run 3g on 2100mhz
i have a testra wildfire unlocked running virgin (optus network) 3g/hdspa fine, and i use a virgin dongle with an parabolic external antenna that only works on 2100
since unlocking ive flashed CM7 and a diff radio to get gps working, but i havnt tested to see if i lost 850 support. i will want this back though (if gone) at some stage so will be looking into this more.

I don't think flashing the radio to 3.35.20.10 makes any difference to Telstra's 850 availability.
I am fairly sure that Carnarvon only has the 850 frequency, and I am still getting a 3G indication and 2.5 Mbps download speeds (which is about normal), so I think we are safe!
Cheers
John in Sunny Carnarvon - Western Australia
Flashing a newer version of the radio won't make you lose 850MHz support.
I'm running 13.55.55.24H_3.35.20.10 and when i moved back to NZ i first tried to use 2degrees as my network provider, but they run on mainly 900MHz and I couldnt get reliable reception at home, but once i switched to Telecoms XT network which is a perfect frequency match for the A3335 Wildfire (the 850/1900 from Telstra) I've had no problems with reception.
If you really want I can upload the original firmware from the Telstra rom as a flashable zip.
no problems, i will wait till i can test if it still works on 850 and was also wondering if flashing the radio that came with telstra could help get bluetooth working with CM7, but is prob more an issue with CM7

[Q] U8180 Rom for New Zealand?

Okay, so I bought the Huawei X1 phone, which is a great little phone.
But, it wasn't long before I started to tinker with it, and in the process I lost the stock Telecom rom and ended up having to flash with an Aussie version.
The problem I'm having though, is that nearly all roms I've found so far will not register properly on the network, and as far as I found out, it's because these all came from 900mhz providers and not the 850mhz like XT.
So heres what I would like somone to do f they are keen enough...
Use SuperOneClick to root their phone.
Install RootToolBox.
Flash with recovery-RA-u8160-v2.3 (you may need a file manager like ES file manager)
Power off then on holding both power button and volume up until recovery menu comes up.
Perform a nand backup of boot, system, and data and then...
Please please please upload the files somewhere for me!
Thanks.
Or if anyone has the U8180 Telecom New Zealand rom, can you please upload?
I've tried getting it from wiki.modaco.com Huawei_Firmware_U8180
But none of the links work, or I can't figure out how to get them working.
You've got the wrong forum mate...This forum section is for U8800 - X5 and what you've got is Huawei Ideos X1 - U8180.
Yeah I know, but for some reason I can't find the right forum?
Able to point me in right direction?
You owe me a beer for this
http://androidz.jimdo.com/roms-x1-u8180/roms-u8180-x1-gaga/#.Tlrayl34K08
Not really mate, those roms are the reason my phone is now stuck on the 900mhz version baseband and not the 850mhz version like I need for telecom.
I'm desperate for the NZ telecom version!
Ups, sorry mate, wasn't aware that NZ is 850mhz.
Can you not change the baseband in *#*#4636#*#* menu?

You are confused, the baseband has nothing to do with the 3G frequency, you cannot change a frequency because it is in the hardware not software.
My question is: did it worked before the update? (im assuming that you are talking about 3G frequency bands)
Sent from my U8800Pro using XDA App
Oh I guess I am confused?
Yes it did work before the update.
And no I don't see an option to change anything in the menu.
How would I go about repairing this?
Maybe contact Huawei NZ? via http://huaweimobile.co.nz
I tried that yesterday.
Got some angry little asian man who wanted to know how I flashed the phone and was no help at all
Noticed before that the phone model isn't actually U8180, but rather U8180-7...
I'm guessing there may be a hardware change for NZ?
Can anybody point me to more info on basebands and whatnot?
I don't really understand it all, I was under the impression that baseband=operating frequencies?
Why don't you take it back to Telecom shop and see if they can flash it back? I doubt you'll have much luck on this forum as it's for a totally different phone that runs on only 2D and Vodafone in NZ
you'd be fine if the Huawei links weren't broken, all the links I've tried for multiple models are broken. Keep an eye on them they might come right soon.
Flashed it with U8150 firmware for a laugh, going back to shop today :S
hey there -
I've got the U8180-7 NZ Telecom version if you want - uploading it now to mediafire and will post it in a bit.
Will you return the favor ? I need to purchase a couple of these phones in NZ and have them shipped out to me. But haven't found a way to do that yet.. nobody seems to want to ship overseas or even have DHL pick on my expense from their shop..
rgds,

Update: seems I can't yet post outside links.. PM me for the link

[Q] 3G Fix with Cyanogenmod 7.1

I have been trying to get the 3G patch done with CM7, but when I do the Custom Recovery, install Zip, and I select the 850/1900 3G fix zip, I get a "Amend scripting is long longer supported......switch to Edify scripting... to get a working update package."
I see some people copy/paste files in certain directories manually...Can someone give me the rundown on this, It's very frustrating not having the Defy on 3G. And yes, I have tried all the basebands in the utility.
Thanks
Paul
Hey Paul,
So you're having 3g problem with cm7? Could I ask you which build you have installed (name of the zip file's ok)?
I haven't heard anyone using a 3g fix on cm7 for months and I mean almost never and maybe not since before the RC releases anyways. The proof is also that your patch doesn't work because is coded in amend and that means before cm7 and ClockWorkMod recovery v3.0..
But if it is still what you want to do, could you also post it here (attach it or give me a link for it) and I will have a look for you. Then I can either tell you where and how to replace files or even create a new patch that will work on newer CWM recovery.
Cheers.
Hey Al, Thanks a bundle, Like Ive said in another post, I've been dealing with mobile phone for a long time, and now when the tables have turned cause I feel like a n00b. LOL
I have the latest Cyanogenmod: CM7.1.0-jordan-signed. It's in my unlocked Defy which has the bands UMTS 900/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900 HSDPA. I need the 850/1900. I chose in the selector all the basebands that use this combo but nada. I even got help from my local carrier for firmware information, but even so I cant find that firmware anywhere. So i wanna try all my options before I call Motorola or flash my phone to stock and send it to get replaced, complaining that I cant use my network. My phone was purchased last Thursday.
So that's that. My phone also is a Euro Variant.
Cheers,
Paul
Here is the "patch" that won't run
Fix_3g_850.1900Mhz-signed.zip: 850, 1900MHz
http://www.mediafire.com/?31y36az6r2w8jws
In another Android Forum, they ran it on Cyanogenmod 7.1 using custom recovery and fix the solution. But it won't run from mine.
Paul
UPDATE: Another member from GrupoAndroid, re-built this for CM7, i ran it and didnt solve my issue.
Info
Hey Al,
Someone on another forum told me that to regain the 3G on my phone there is a Chinese ROM that fixes the band issue, have you heard of this?
Hey Paul,
I had a look and yes that patch is just the radio files and probably old ones because the patch was coded in Amend.
So I've made a new one in Edify that should work; I mean now install properly on your version on CWM recovery as I have no clue if this will really solve your 3G problems.
Before you install it though, either make a nandroid backup of your current build (recovery->backup/restore->backup (all)) OR simply make a copy of the whole bp_nvm_default folder located in /system/etc/motorola as a safety net.
Lastly, I would also suggest you to give a shot and the other patch (baseban139.zip) that I found here which apparently contains the same but most recent Defy radio files.
So flash either or and see how it goes...
I hope it fixes your problem and if it does; I charge one hit on the "Thanks button"
Cheers,
/ AL
Oki doke.....installing 3G fix attempt. (i did backup)
.....FAIL. No Service. Selected network unavailable.
No Voice nor Data.
Should I flash the baseband file you made over this or should I restore first?
I went ahead and did the baseband zip install,
Voice: Available
Data: EDGE
Any other suggestions? No 3G....
No thanks for me then... ;-) --> but I might remind you that i did put time into this for you; making the pach, the replies and all --> so it would be nice of you to recognize that somehow............
No sorry, none that I can think of anyway.
Try to ask on the main CM7 thread maybe...
I'm on telus having issue finding a radio that works well and 3g does not work just wondering if you could give me a hand I flash cm7.1 on the defy after rooting, all I get is a H on my data connection

I think I have this problem too after I tried (unsuccessfully) to root my phone. Now I can only get some networks (Tmobile & Orange) but not my network (Talkmobile, which piggybacks Vodafone). I've been googling around about this for a while and I think it may be that I need to cahange my baseband. Current ver is EPU93_U_00.60.03. But I don't know how to do this. Any help to a noobe would be much appreciated...

BLU Studio 5.5S Radio

Hi guys, REALLY new here haha.
Anyways, i recently bought a BLU 5.5S (unlocked) over eBay and unfortunately the bands dont match up here in my country (Singapore)
I have been asking around and some of my friends have been saying that i can try to flash a new radio for it and see if it works. Some have told me to root and flash a custom ROM.
Im wondering if flashing a different radio can actually make the bands "match". Another friend of mine was saying that he suspects that BLU has locked certain bands, and if i could figure out a way to unlock it then i can access multiple bands.
im really confused.
Sorry for such a noob question but i would really appreciate your help!!
Thanks!
Anyone with any ideas? is it really possible with a BLU studio 5.5s?
Mobile uncle>mtk engineer> bands (I think, this is from memory)
Will let you pick and choose all available bands
You can also try to replace system/etc/firmware/Modem.bin

Thats awesome. But where can i find these things. Sorry for the noob question
A new modem? Check your baseband in about phone, and Google another version of that same type. For instance on my phone I have " "MOLY.WR8.W1248.MD.WG.MP.V6.P30" I would omit the p30 and search "MOLY.WR8.W1248.MD.WG.MP.V6" then replace the modem to the folder above... And cross your fingers your new modem supports your gsm band
