[Q] Metro apps won't launch - Windows 8 General

Hi,
I installed the consumer preview on my HP touchsmart tm2t-1100 and all works fine, just that not a single Metro app will launch! I look through many forums, blogs but couldn't find anything to fix my problem. What I checked already:
Resolution is 1280x800, so sufficient
UAC is on default
Graphics card updated to ATI catalyst for win8 consumer preview
tried using both, Live and local user, but neither works
Please help so I can enjoy some of that Metro beauty too..

Try uninstalling all your metro apps and reinstalling them from the Store.

Problem is not even the store app opens :/

Hello!
Same problem for me..
Did you upgraded from Seven too? If yes, it seems to be a known issue... No solution yet except format and do a clean install. But personnally, I can't do that because of my files on this comp, so... If anyone has got an idea...
PS:Installed on Asus K52JC, 1366*768 resolution, UAC set to default, tried with Live profile and without it, no apps from Metro except Settings works.

Registry fix here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com...l/thread/b0e4f9a3-4c96-4e6f-9399-71fc5813853c Make sure you reboot.

it's most likley the graphics card. When i loaded the Intel HD on my asus, the experience went up, but all metro crashed. When i went back to the basic MS provided, experience dropped from 3.4 to 2.2 and all metro apps worked and crashes went away.

@thereverend999
Thank you so much! Worked Perfectly <3 Now I'm looking to delete the watermark on the desktop, and it will be perfect ^^ Thanks again!

Had this same problem, it would just hang at the Logo screen (for the app), then close, multiple times. then I just went to desktop mode, and restarted, then came back and everything worked. Go figure.

Windows 8 bugs

I want to change my OS with windows 8 but is still beta and i want to find out what bugs are. My friend had already told my about 2 of them but i want to find out if there more bugs.
I will apreciate any post
Actual bugs:
Photoshop crash
Sometimes the computer restarts when playing youtube videous
Windows 8 is nowhere near beta.
It's a developer preview.
As in a preview meant for developers.
Anyone know why my Asus touch screen does not allow touch screen with the developer preview? Works fine in 7 but when I go into partition 2 to windows 8 the touch screen won work and says my driver isn't installed...then it won't allow any drivers to be searched for...says thentouchscreen is unknown device
Ok go into windows 7 and go to program files... then go and copy the drivers from there to a flashdrive or external hard drive and the go into win 8 and paste drivers and install...my touch screen worked fine after that
Press THX! If this helped

Keep in mind that the currently available version really isn't a Beta. It was released predominatly to give developers and professional organizations an idea of where MS is going with the product.
I currently have had it installed on an Acer Iconia W500 for about 10 weeks now and use it for about an hour or so every night for casual surfing and some general messing-around-with.
On the one hand the fact that I CAN do this is a pretty good indication that MS is working to develop a solid product.
On the other hand the DP is NOT even close to bug free and is not entirely stable, and really should be regarded as experimental software in every sense of the word.
Just a short list of issues I've had:
Reluctance to connect to certain WiFi Routers and Controllers, escpecially those that are using some type of key-authentican method (more commonly found on Enteprise Networks). WiFi connection "dies" periodically and needs to be restarted, could be a driver issue, could be OS.
Metro IE can be slow, cranky, or hang altogether (but it does work well about 75% of the time). Some websites (TMZ.com comes to mind) can crash it almost every time.
Many of the Metro example apps are unstable.
Most programs WILL install via the "classic" desktop interface, but one needs to realize that everything that made previous versions of Windows so awkward and sucky on a Tablet still hold true on the DP of Windows 8 for legacy applications. The gestures and inputs needed to smoothly use legacy apps are either incomplete or non-existent in the Developer Preview.
A lot of my hoary old legacy apps (i.e. ones that were designed way back when Windows XP was new and have seen no real updates since) won't even install. I doubt very much that will be fixed. (If I were MS I would not fix those issues) Neither Picture Publisher or Digital Image Suite will work for example (again no surprise but I'll miss both)
I'm not trying to discourage you from doing this, indeed if you have a sense of adventure and like to live on the edge, go for it. But I personally would not install it on a primary PC (I have a very healthy Dell Laptop running Win x64 for doing real work) and you definately want to go in knowing that this is an incomplete and not-ready-for-prime-time product.
If you are reticent in any way, I'd wait about 4 weeks and the Consumer Preview will likely be out by then. Every expectation is that version will be several orders of magnitude better on the the completeness/stability scale.
They will change to Consumer Preview . Can't wait to fix this bug's

[Q] Weather App Question

I installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my netbook last night to see exactly how well the performance is on a low level machine. Loving it thus far, after doing the regedit to allow me to run metro apps. Through configuring everything the way I wanted it, I stumbled upon a problem. I cannot change my default home location within the default Weather app. Does anyone know a trick to changing that? I tried a little google-fu, but had no luck.

Hmmm, usually it asks me on first use what my location is...you may need to pull up the options/settings menu in the app...then, click "places" and enter your location there. If you have already tried this I'll try some other options and let you know...
Btw, how do you like win8?
I have been unable to try the suggested steps as of yet. Life's been slightly hectic the past day or so. I'll try that out tonight.
So far, I love Windows 8. I am running it on my netbook currently, but I am planning on throwing it on my main rig in a dual boot environment to see how the 64 bit version handles anything I can throw at it, since I really don't do much when I am using my netbook outside of IE. I see a lot of people complaining about the Metro UI. I personally love it. I have to say, though, I have been on Windows Phone 7 since early last year. Speaking of, I have high hopes for the integration between the two platforms based on what I have seen so far.
Right click in the weather app and something should come up. I'm not at my computer right now so I don't know what exactly

Start menu corruption!!

Not sure if is this is associated with not having activated my Win8 Pro x64 RTM or not but over the last few days by new Metro Start menu has been becoming more and more unusable.
First the text on the tiles became very blurry.. Then opening the mail app showed everything mostly in black. Now the settings menu is unreadable. The tiles on the start menu will become a bit more clear if I hover the mouse over then but if I move it off it goes back fuzzy again.
Anyone know if these are just side effects of not activating?
I think this is a widespread problems. I don't have windows 8 RTM but a lot of people have been having this issue, namely AMD video card users. I'd wait for updated drivers that should be coming out shortly.

But I actually found out there were 2 settings in the Nvidia control panel when turned on created start menu corruption. I've fixed it by just leaving them unticked.
and those settings were?? just so this thread is a bit more useful

nm think I found out what it was.
FXAA since the effect was the same exact thing that happened in games that aren't equipped to handle AA the right way do the same effect as described above. Turned off FXAA, went into the store and all the icons were normal, closed the store and rebooted the machine, logged back into windows 8 and metroUI is back to normal.
every other option stayed the same.
Yeah, sorry for not posting those 2 settings.. I've confirmed Antialiasing - FXAA and Antialiasing - Transparency were the 2 settings.
Mind you though I pretty much turn everything on in my control panel. I pretty much just unticked and ticked settings one by one to see what caused corruption.
The thread is old, but i want to say that those 2 settings didn't revert the corruption. At least for me. I have a nvidia 560Ti and i like to set everything to maximize the quality. So, after i did that i experienced blurry text on Start page and black corruption on menus. Desktop work fine, thou. I can only fix it if i restore default settings in nvidia panel. I tried to disable/enable some settings in pair or three at once until i got bored. After restoring default the corruptions disappeared but i can't play games with those settings. So this isn't a solution.

Windows 8 Support

As working for Microsoft, Specially with their windows project I found it very difficult to get a proper guidance or troubleshoot their problems when Microsoft stops supporting them.
Some of you might be aware to the fact as Windows 8 pro at 1,999/- INR price tag is coming without any support from Microsoft end and neither you have any trial option to check and decide whether u should buy it or not, It becomes utterly necessary to initiate a small contribution for the great lovers of the Microsoft.
Here what we are trying to do is to get all the answers for your beloved windows 8 and help you with the troubleshooting their causes.
I would also like to tell the moderators: Thanks for deleting my previous thread but it wasn't a direct commercialization what I was trying to do was to make available things which aren't free.
As piracy is strictly neither my policy nor this forum's so we needed to pay to Microsoft and that is what we were charging, it wasn't a product promotion it was making product available at a price which makes it nearly free.
Anyways back to the topic, folks please go ahead with the issues
I just gat the Asus Q200E and im wondering if I want to switch back to Win 7 will it be tough to get drivers or are they similar to the win 8 drivers. You can always downgrade to the previous versions for the windows, though downgrading to the windows xp would be bit troublesome due to the compatibility issues but windows 7 and 8 more or less share the same architecture for the device driver compatibility so downgrading to windows 7 would not bring you major issues with ur device drivers until and unless you are having TPA module installed in your laptop
and for downgrading please do contact Microsoft for a downgrade key it is absolutely free
Thank you for your help. Much appreciated..

I have this issue with my older computer; 2.2GHz single core AMD athlon 64 (socket 939). I'd be curious as to what is causing this too, but I only have the release preview on that computer. For me, the computer idles at 25% and it just feels really sluggish, like each process in the system isn't running as efficiently as it could. Conversely, a modified XP (unofficially modified: all components but the bare minimum removed and slipstreamed updates / registry improvements) runs perfectly fine on the same hardware. I know XP is faster than 8, and especially so the modified version I use, but it's clear that something is actually not right. The DPC latency isn't terrible, but it's consistently over 1000 microseconds, vs XP which averaged ~15 microseconds. It must be a driver issue I'm guessing? The hardware is old and I wouldn't be surprised if one of the components isn't running well for whatever reason under 8.
I think the issue is true for both x64 and x86, I thought some of my RAM might have been bad so I took them out and switched to 32 bit while I was at it (in case the 32 bit drivers were better).
Actually on my new gaming rig the dpc latency averages exactly 1000 microseconds with 8, and though I suffer no performance issues, this bugs the living hell out of me, knowing I used to have 15!

I would like to add on to your post. Along with the reason you explained there is one more reason as windows 8 is programmed for giving max performance with the min power consumption, due to which at idle CPU tries to enter at low frequency stage and also if you have a very old system this issue arises as mentioned in the above post due to one more reason of HDD.
Windows 8 tries to keep alive threads running in background to save the power but due to CRC in the old HDD this loops the processor
Hey, I'm having problems sharing internet connected to VPN to my PS3. I've searched MS Answers forum and did come across this
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...indows-8/4e56a425-c685-4ab2-9b23-72b1cab4557e
But I'd like to reduce the steps of doing it to a single click like in a form of VBS or BAT file, how do I do that? And why is Windows 8 behaving like this like that guy said.
Hi dudes, I'm having the same problem as this guy over here.
Everytime I boot up, I have to quickly press "win+D" to get into desktop mode. If not it just hangs at metro start screen and I can do nth about it except "ctrl+alt+del". It just freezes there. Using windows 8 pro. Had this prob since yesterday. It was okay when I installed system updates on 15 Nov up until yesterday. I didn't make any software/hardware installations/updates in between this period of time.
Hope someone can help me out here! Thanks!

In the "good old days" applicaitons would often un-hide the Taskbar so their notification icons could show an updated status and they could ensure it would be seen. I think this method has fallen out of favor, but older applications that haven't been updated could still be sending the commands to the system to show the Taskbar. Is it possible that you have an older app in the notification area that's affecting the Taskbar as described?
Open Task Manager and Regedit.
++ on the Start Menu & select 'Exit Explorer'
or use services.msc to temporarily exit explorer by killing the service "explorer"
In Regedit, navigate to:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop]
delete the value named 'Toolbars'.
In Task Manager, select 'File' -> 'New Task' -> type 'explorer' to restart
the shell.
If that doesn't do the trick, repeat deleting 'TaskbarWinXP' as well. in ur case it might be 'TaskbarWin8'
I've got a lot of old software but I haven't used any of it on my laptop. Something poorly coded may well be the issue, though this behavior is hardly exclusive to "old" software as windows 8 itself seems to actively embrace exactly this: by default the taskbar is auto hidden (this is not true of xp/vista/7) and if something isn't in the foreground and for whatever reason won't take focus, it will raise the taskbar and keep it raised until you click on said program in the taskbar.
I think it actually might be related to internet explorer and it trying to tell me that a download is finished, but gets stuck there. I'm going to see if it happens with IE running and nothing else before editing the registry.
OK I have a good question for you!
Enabled bitlocker on my C:\ drive. This killed the bootable recovery and also 8's ability to "refresh" without a DVD (it could not find the files needed).
How do I move the bootable recovery tools to the system partition? Will this fix the refresh problem? If not, how do I restore 8's ability to refresh without external media?

I don't know how you're not having "this issue" since enabling bitlocker *forces* WinRE to be disabled, including the ability to refresh.
I disabled bitlocker because ReAgentc.exe refused to operate with bitlocker enabled. The only solution I could find was to format the HDD, recreate a bigger system partition, reinstall windows and do things from the fresh install. I suppose I could refresh my custom image from there, assuming it would even work for 8 (the instructions I found were for 7).

App suddenly force closing immediately...

I'm having a strange new problem on my Note...
Yesterday I downloaded the new sketchbook pro for tablets update (version 2.5), and it worked fine. Drew a picture, everything worked, was all good. Last thing I did before I went to bed was finish off a picture, then put the tablet on charge for the night.
Today, I dont think I used the tablet at all until a couple hours ago. (I may have used the browser, or done an update of something, but I dont recall)
First think I did a couple hours ago was try and open up sketchbook... and it immediatly force closes back to desktop, no error message or anything. It happens after literally a split second, the app screen open up (plain black, with the sketchbook logo in the top corner) and then closes to desktop.
I have tried:
Uninstalling/Reinstalling
Wiping app cache
wiping system cache
wiping dalvik cache
deleting the apps folder off my sd card
I have also done a full system wipe, wiping all cache and user data and reinstalling my ROM.
I then reinstalled sketchbook, and it has the same issue.
Sketchbook mobile works fine, its just sketchbook pro.
Which is strange, cos it worked yesterday and it hasnt had an update since then.
I did also try installing from a romtoolbox backup of the app which I did while it was working yesterday, but that has the same problem.
So, any ideas? Is there any data area on my sd card that wouldnt have been reset during all these wipes? Should I totally format the internal sd card (making sure to copy the backup onto the external sd) and start from a blank slate?
Or is this caused by something else? other apps seem to work as normal.
It's a bug. Autodesk has acknowledged the problem. How fast they fix it is another matter since they're not known for rolling out updates quickly. Just wait it out.
Or you can try downloading Sketchbook express for tablets (and do not update it!). Then, using file manager, copy (not cut) all your files from Sketchbook pro to the corresponding folders on sketchbook express. You should be able to open your work from Sketchbook pro on Sketchbook express.
The only down side are the missing features on express. But its a temporary fix while we wait for a proper update.

That is such a strange bug... seeing as the app worked fine for a good 12 hours when I first got the update!!
I wonder what could have changed overnight that caused it to become totally broken.
I'm wondering about that myself since it worked fine after the update...then nothing. Made me very upset about this too and so are a bunch of people. Look at the rating on play store. Sketchbook pro is racking up 1 star ratings pretty quickly.
We are all having the same issue. I am sure their email are flooded with feedbacks.
It should be their top task to fix the terrible bugs for now. Haha.
An update is available now. Seems to have fixed the crashing issue with Sketchbook Pro.
That was pretty quick of them.
