Removal HowTo
(After some people wondering if the removal of the film would effect the front facing camera. IT DOES NOT! Here's a video for proof)
Front facing camera test
******FAQ:******
Q: What kind of glass/plastic is the Xperia Play screen made of?
A: The Screen is mineral glass, not as scratch resistant as Gorilla glass though (Iphone/Razr/etc)
Q:How scratch resistant is Mineral Glass?
A:Mineral Glass is scratch resistant. But not scratch proof. My keys scratched tiny nicks and scrapes on my screen (No screen protectors, Shatter film removed, raw glass screen), but it's held up in my pocket pretty well.
Q: I've heard the factory "Screen protector" sucks!
A: There are two "layers" of "Screen Protectors" on a Xperia play. The first one is that stretchy, vinyl, cheap looking layer that you get when you first get your phone and it scratches super easy.
The second layer is the factory fitted shatter proof film that doubles as a screen protector. Leave it on unless it becomes super scratched, then refer to my removal video above.
Q: Will putting on a screen protector on top of the original shatter film/screen protector decrease the sensitivity of my screen?
A: Keeping the shatter film on and placing another purchased screen protector will not effect the screen sensitivity.
Q: Are the colors more bright and vivid after the shatter film is removed?
A: From what I can tell, no
Q: Is the screen sensitivity better when the shatter film is removed?
A: From what I can tell, no
Q: Is the screen easier to slide my finger on after the film is removed
A: It is actually harder to slide your finger on the raw glass. But it's not a huge difference and not really noticeable.
Q: Is the front facing camera effected by the removal of the shatter film?
A: No, the camera is not effected in any way.
Oh snap dude, so now what is going to block most of that radiation from going into your face?
That film has a polymer to block alot of the harmful emissions.
I might as well keep my shatter proof film on then to be on if there's no difference just to be on the safe side.
I have a screen protecter on top of it as well and I have to say the display still looks good.
I find that poor touch response near the screen edge area. Can it be improved after remove this plastic film? Is it really "Glass" screen? because if it is, there is no need to add any screen protector like Iphone and other Phones with tempered glass screen!

I believe it is glass, just not gorilla glass (the kinda of glass iPhone has)

It's mineral glass. Very scratch resistant. Just maybe not as tough/shatter proof as gorilla glass.

Will this removal improve touch-response? If not, is it necessary to do "Touch- Screen calibration" and how?

I have certainly noticed better responsiveness with the anti-shatter screen peeled off, and no you don't need anything re-calibrated
I did this, great quality, but check the front camera ruined.

Just curious why peeling the plastic film will damage the front camera?? Is this plastic film is direct contact with front camera's lens?? any photos?

Negative.
Mine still works fine. I'll throw up a video tomorrow.
The film should have no effect on the front facing camera because it's under the glass screen.

If you remove the film, you will have the worst time trying to use your phone with moist fingers, so if you have sweaty fingers don't do it unless you plan on adding another screen protector, I removed it and had problems, used am invisible shield and it fixed the problem.

I think so.
Also, quick question. After 9 months of use, my Play has more scratches than I can possibly count. I have not removed anything from the screen yet.
If I remove the first layer of the factory fitted thing, will this remove said scratches? Also, will I need to do this if I want to add a new screen protector?

If you didn't add the screen protector that came in the box with your Play, it's only one layer. Yes, removing that shield will remove the scratches, and I would highly recommend doing so before you affix a new screen protector. I wouldn't want all those scratches being preserved by a new shield.
I removed the film in the first week I had the phone. It's been almost a year now and I don't have even a single mark on the glass, despite the phone being dropped face-down on concrete multiple times!
Other parts on the phone have already broken, but not the screen! The film is basically useless.

I unboxed my X10 today, and found that besides the relatively more obvious protective film I taken off once I opened the box, there is a EXTRA, very well positioned film on the top of the glass. If you look closely enough, you will see the edge of the extra film from the actual glass underneath. Does anyone else notice the same or is it just me? Is that really just one more layer of protective film or it is part of the material of the glass?
Yes, it comes with one pre-applied screen protector and one inside the box!
Out of interest what sized microSD card was included? Mine came with 16GB (Nordic version).
If I understood it right from the webpage I ordered mine from. does mine come with 8 GB
So how to take it off?
It's driving me insane....and why does a SCRATCH-RESSISTANT screen need a pre-applied screen protector???
So has anyone tried to remove the pre applied fim? I'm so against to use any kind of film on my touch screen device.

The "pre applied protector" is the one SE calls scratch resistant, I think. "Shutter proof sheet on mineral glass".
Take a look at the X10 white paper: developer.sonyericsson.com/getDocument.do?docId=102192

As far as i know mineral glass is in itself "scratch proof". But that doesn't mean it can't be scratched of course. It means minor pocket scratches are avoided.
"Mineral glass is ordinary tempered glass made from silica. It is more scratch resistant than Plexiglass which is a plastic also used for watch crystals."
So if infact it is mineral glass there is no need for an extra layer of protection.
I'm not quite sure what "shutter proof sheet" is but seems strange that this screen should need one when other mineral glass screens do not.
Also should point out that for me it seems identical to the included "screen protector" in both size, thickness and consistency.
I'll report back if scratches start appearing on my screen. I'll give it 7 days of normal use(as i used my iPhone, Hero, LG Arena) to see if any scratches start appearing, but I doubt they will.
I didn't receive my X10 yet, but isn't the 'protective' film used to make the screen more fingerprint resistive?

No, infact there were more fingerprints with the film applied vs when i removed it. You need a special coating on the screen for that(oleophobic coating) and with that you can wipe the screen clean very easily.
As far as i know the X10 has not have it's screen treated with oleophobic coating.

According to the white pages:
"Scratch-resistant Yes. Shutter proof sheet on mineral glass"
The way I see it the "sheet" makes it scratch resistant.
If you ever had a watch (clock) with mineral glass, you know that it scratches easily. for a scratch resistant glass you need a saphire glass!
Both iphone and nexus one probarbly have mineral glass, but the thing making those so resistant (see youtube) is some kind of coating on the glass. (I think)

There is nothing in the white papers suggesting that either the nexus one, iPhone nor my old Hero had any other coating than the oleophobic coating for easy fingerprint removal.
Here is a good explanation of mineral glass vs. sapphire glass:
http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/1870141
And yes Sapphire glass is the best but cost too much for ordinary phones. mineral glass will protect the phone against most pocket scratches. But the real test will be the next 7 days, today there is no apparent scratching of the phone(no micro-scratches either).
Also of note is that the screen seems much more responsive after the removal of their so called "shutter proof sheet".
What we really need is an reviewer that doesn't give a damn about his test-unit to give it a go...with and without the sheet!

The watchword here is scratch-resistant.
A glass screen will always be more scratch resistant than a plastic screen, but that doesn't mean that it can't be scratched at all. The screen-protector is just a way of helping extend the life of the screen face and I personally thank SE for providing it. Take spectacles for example. Glass lenses are harder wearing, but cost more and weigh more. Plastic lenses are lighter and cost less, but are more prone to scratches. You can still scratch glass lenses by putting them down glass first.
The difference between mineral glass and sapphire glass is interesting. My watch has a sapphire glass face and it has *ONE* scratch after 3 years of being worn everyday. That scratch came from a HARD direct impact (which hurt my wrist). The face is otherwise flawless.

Yes if you read my posts further along I do point out that the screen isn't scratch-proof
I do question the decision and still do as my HTC Hero(which I bought back in August 09) has ZERO scratches And they are both supposed to be based on the same mineral-glass technology.
Im testing
Well, I've removed the screen protector and I think it is much better.
It seems so much smoother, and the screen is definitely more responsive.
I will post again in a couple of weekend to keep you all up-to-date.
soo... u guys can confirm the touchscreen is way better without the foil on? ( more sensetive aaand more accurate???)
coz i am thinking of swappin mine 2 the Desire.. but cant test it takin of the protector.. otherwise they wont return it...
I have had my problems with the X10, but the screen and its sensitivity is not one of them.. Without the exception of the edges...
I can almost never type "a".
I added the second protection as well, and love how the screen works / flows...
(with the exception of the left edge )
Please hold back your remarks about screen protectors this was a replacement, only the second day I had it, didnt have a chance to purchase one.

Think you could post a pic of the damage? if it's not too deep, i've heard of people using this product called applesauce that is supposed to give really good results. Maybe try that out and see how it works. Good luck to you, hope you get the scuffs out

Yeah, just thought of this after I read this post but you can also try the stuff that is used to fill in cracks for car windshields.
light scuffs
I've heard that white toothpaste can be used on light scuffs on plastic.
or perhaps Brasso polish?
The screen on the evo is made of gorilla glass, not plastic. Therefore acid based compounds such as applesauce or lcd scuff removers on the market would not work. The famous banana slice/peel trick doesn't work here either. Some compounds for watches only clean the surface of the glass and remove dirt from within the scratches, making the scratch less visible.
Your best bet is to clean the glass to remove all dirt then install a screen protector like invisibleshield to mask the scratches. This will work better since a liquid solution (usually 1 part soap and 9 parts water) is applied to the screen so you can squeegee out all the air during installation. The only downside to this is the texture feels like apple skin and screen clarity is affected...maybe 15-20%.

Not sure if it's made of Gorilla glass-- not saying that it scratches easily (because it probably doesn't), but I found I had a two very, very slight surface scratches on the screen after babying it for a month (always put it in an empty pocket with no keys/coins/etc, never set it face down, etc).
In any case, I wouldn't try using toothpaste, brasso, or any other solution on the screen except for an eyeglass/electronic screen cleaner as you'll probably end up creating more noticable scratches. Just clean the screen as well as you can, and throw on a screen protector, and you'll probably never notice the scratch-- most very small scratches are only noticable when viewing the screen at a very oblique angle to catch a reflected light source, and the screen protector blocks this.
Also, I wouldn't recommend the ZAGG. I had never used a ZAGG screen protector before, but have heard great things about them, and I'm not particularly picky or sensitive about screen protectors. However, I found the Zagg protector had a horrible rubbery feel to it, and gave the screen a really bad and noticable orange peel effect (actually, the effect seemed more like the screen was behind a 1/4" layer of ice). I put on a cheapo $1.99 screen protector from Gizmo Dorks (on Amazon.com), and the difference was like night and day-- the screen was just as smooth and clear as the original glass.
I have a few too... Leave it be and after a couple weeks you'll forget you even have them.
Can we buy the glass yet for this phone? I replace iPhone 3G and 3GS glass on an almost daily basis at work.

He might... but I'm not sure a $100 deductible + limited further coverage is worth a few small scuffs. I guess it depends on how bad they are, but if they are anything like mine it totally would not be worth it.

Since the debate is going back n forth about the glass.....what is the difference between the two? Sure i could search but since there's a debate I think it should be explained this thread...
I looked all over and can't find anything confirming it's Gorilla Glass so I assume it's not. Plus I wouldn't find so many people with easily cracked screens if it was...

I had my first hairline scratch for SGS2 within 4 days of usage. Probably the Oleophobic coating it had which is more prone than Gorilla Glass.
I hurried to get a Screen protector but what about the camera?
Nobody in the forum seemed to be concerned about giving the 8MP's a decent protection.
Anyone here use a old SP on the lens or leave it as it is?
For a scratch-phobia user like me, probably not leaving chances to luck.

Once I fixed a piece of a screen protector (which corresponded to area of the home button) on the camera's glass but it made my pictures terrible, specially because I covered the flash also. then I removed it. However it was one of the cheapest screen protector. A crystal clear one might be a different story.

Isn't compass showing towards your camera all the time?
I bought the SGP Ultra Capsule case for SGS2. It makes the phone about 1-2 mm thicker so when you put the phone on a flat surface the camera stays intact. Same goes for the screen. I've never used or even liked phone cases before but this case is awesome, my friends didn't even notice my phone had a case It also comes with a Crystal Clear screen protector so you can cut it to make a piece for your camera.
Oh and about the screen. The SGS2 screen is made of Gorilla Glass and has oleophobic coating. Oleophobic coating is not a glass type but coating, something that is added on top of the glass. And that coating doesn't scratch so you can't say that SGS2 is more prone to scratches due to the coating.

Yeap you're right. It should be the scratch-resistant (not proof) gorilla glass. I must make it clear that the scratch is a negligible hairline that only shows when screen's off.

How is the screen protector like? I purchased a Matte Screen Protector and hell it makes my Super Amoled screen like rainbow glitter all over my screen. Especially the whites.
Worst money spent on a SP.
enough with cheap screen protector.

thanks man!
right now there're a few major downsides to SP for SGS2
Anti Fingerprint SP
+No Smudges
- Rainbow speckled display can drive some people mad when the purpose of SGS2 is it's beautiful AMOLED display. I mean, whats the point? Lol.
Crystal Clear SP
+Almost Naked SP
- Smudges.
Note: I am not too sure the extent of smudges on SP affecting user experiences.
But in short, with respect to thread's subject, I find many people have really unique ways to Sealing their SGS2 from wear and tear and by far the Magnet cover is the most creative and unique.
Solutions to SP for Camera
1) Get Martin Field's SP. They come with Camera SP. But they're only ones to do so.
2) Get a cheap crystal SP
3) Use a expensive SP just for the Camera SP.
Afterthoughts
I can't seem to abandon the thought of leaving the camera's glass Naked. I feel so uneasy when I lay it on the table, not knowing when some loose staplers or sand strikes/scratches.
Meanwhile I leave it to my case' thickness to safeguard my camera's glass for the time being...
As i did not find any thread about people who actually removed their ASF, i just documented the removal for further use.
Reasons for removing the ASF (Fingerprints, scratches, dust, etc.) have been discussed before, so i won't tell about that again. Sony support even cleared out that removing the ASF does NOT affect the warranty in any way.
Basically, the removal is equal to the Z1. I just took my original Z1C (1), scratched the foil on the upper right corner a bit and began peeling it off. (2)
And YES, the logo comes off with it. To be honest, I don't really care about that. I know it's a Sony-device, so i don't need to read it every time. (3)
The screen doesn't look any different when it's turned off (4), but it seems a bit clearer when activated.(5)
At the first few minutes, swiping felt a bit sticky. I just used a tissue and wiped off the remaining glue. Now it feels pretty snatchy.
I'll have a closer look at the screen look&feel the next days, but i'm not going to buy any other screen protector. Never used them on my prior devices (Desire HD, SGS2, HTC One,..) and never got any hard scratches on the screen.
Hope this helps anwering some questions that come up every time the ASF is discussed.
P.S.: Sorry for the crappy picture quality. Whoever complains next about z1c's camera should try making good pictures using a Blackberry Q10.
I was also told by Sony support removing the ASF doesn't affect the warranty. Go wild!

I also removed the ASF using an x-acto knife following this YouTube video (specific for Z1c, but same procedure as Z1):

I then installed the following tempered glass protector, it feels great, and I agree the screen does look a bit clearer:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nillkin-9H-...163?pt=US_PDA_Accessories&hash=item2336b638fb
One word of advice for people following that video, you should try to place a microfiber cloth between the knife blade and the metal trim, or you may nick it. I have tiny (almost indiscernible) scratches on my trim because I didn't think of that before.

I then installed the following tempered glass protector, it feels great, and I agree the screen does look a bit clearer:

One word of advice for people following that video, you should try to place a microfiber cloth between the knife blade and the metal trim, or you may nick it. I have tiny (almost indiscernible) scratches on my trim because I didn't think of that before.

I see there in the Ebay listing that this has a piece of glass for the camera itself? Is that right?

I didn't get that exact eBay listing as I'm actually in China now and used the equivalent service here. But, I saw the same screenshots. The back protector isn't actually glass, it's just a plastic one and doesn't over the camera at all. I ended up not putting on the back since it was cut so close to the actual size of the back I couldn't get it aligned that perfectly.
The glass front protector is excellent though.
Just a short update: after removing the asf, the Phantom touch issues increased a lot. No matter how many times I cleared the screen, it went mad about 3 - 4 times a day. So I bought a screen protector from artwizz and installed it yesterday. After 24 hours of use, I didn't have one more touch issue. Seems like it'd fix the Phantom touch problems for me, which is good. Otherwise I would have returned the device pretty soon.

Can i put tempered glass screen protector on top of ASF? Will that decrease the sensitivity touch?
Not at all decrease sensitivity. I had mine glass on ASF (Without Camera and Sensor cutout), so far no problem with selfie + sensor + touch is as usual.
What glass is underneath? Is it some version of Corning gorilla glass or just "regular" run of the mill digitizer glass?
Is there an ASF film at the back as well? People are reporting that the back is not glass but plastic.
There is supposedly an ASF on the glass version of the back (sold in Jaoan only). The plastic one does not have one I think.

OP, How has the screen been since you took off the ASF? Any scratches or other issues? How is the touch screen responsiveness?
I am very intrigued by removing the ASF, but once I do, any scratches I might incur are very permanent to the device.

it became VERY sensitive. I noticed that way more ghost touches occoured. I didn't use alcohol to remove the remaining glue afterwards, perhaps this was the problem. But anyways, the screen glas is really resistant. Didn't notice any scratches for the two weeks, i left it this way. Now i have a good looking dulled screen protector on it, which eliminated the ghost touches completely and also keeps the sunlight reflections at a minimum.

Hey,
i just bought a Z1 from eBay and got a lot of ghost touches.I looked around the forum and it seems like that the previous owner of the Z1 has removed the ASF, since there is no logo on the front side of the phone. With those ghost touch issues, the phone is pretty unusable... Did the screen protector fix the issues for you completly? If yes, which one do you use?
Thanks!
One thing that's worth noting that I see hasn't been mentioned:
The ASF is actually deceptively thick. So when you take it off you'll notice the screen is now 'sunken' into the body of the phone with sharp edges on all four sides....not flush as it appears with the film on (or on an iPhone for instance).
Thought might be worth mentioning...I couldn't stand it but some might.

I used the Artwizz protector (as you are from Hamburg too: Mediamarkt Nedderfeld ) and it eliminated 95% of the ghost touches. I still have them rarely when i use Swiftkey for swiping, but that's most likely more a software- than display-bug.
It really annoys me how easy it is to scratch the asf, I have had the phone for a couple of weeks and I already have a few hair line scratches on the front as well as a bunch on the back. I am glad I like the phone, but man does it kill the re-sell value.
I think I will keep the ASF on for now, and once it gets in rough shape I will remove it and try it without the asf.

I can confirm this. I took it off yesterday, not sure if I'm entirely happy with the result (took front off as well). It feels nice and is more scratch proof than asf but I think I need something on it with oleophobic coating.
Removed the ASF due to a little scratch. The touchscreen is very very annoying with ghost touches. Also ordered a glass protector, but my advise: leave the ASF on! At least until you have a protector. Its a pretty sh-itty phone now

I still have the screen protector that came when the phone shipped on the back screen. Do you use a screen protector and if not did the screen scratch easily? Is the rear screen made of gorilla glass like the front or something easier to break?

Both of the screen are supposedly made of Gorilla Glass. Personally I don't use any kind of screen protectors, and no scratches yet. I do keep good care of my device, though.
I think the best protection would be the bumber. That way you would avoid scratches from surfaces when you set your phone down, and get some protection in case you dropped your phone.
I use a screenprotector on front and back. On the back I find it improves clarity (less fuzzy) and has better grip. See here for a review. I agree with Jeopardy that a bumper is best for protection (ialso have).
