You would be surprised who owns the most spectrum in US.

If sprint plays their cards right they might be in for surprise. That's if...
I'm still waiting for that Galaxy Nexus LTE while I use my Nexus S 4G.
That article reads like an analysis commissioned by AT&T to promote M&A.
The Sprint section is especially misleading. Sprint and Clearwire are *NOT* the same company. Besides all that, isn't the Clearwire/Sprint deal all but dead?
The takeaway here is in between the lines. Look at 4G exclusively. All of the carriers have the spectrum to more than double the 4G spectrum (big speed boost) and yet they are not doing so... Why do you think that is?
Greed much? Artificial scarcity? (I think neither of these. Ask me why.)
---------- Post added at 11:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:01 PM ----------
My other thought is that even though it appears that Sprint might have the spectrum goat by the balls, Sprint has proven time and again that they don't know how to move forward. Clearwire? Fail. Lightsquared? Fail. The fail is the decision on Sprint's part to not provide due diligence when selecting business partners.

Wow I just noticed the concatenation function in multiple posts... Nice.
As a personal observation, I view Sprint's entire executive team as retards, only to be outdone in stupidity by Hewlett Packard.

Sprint recently pumped $1.6B into clearwire essentially bailing them out. So no, clearwire is not dead just yet but you might be right in the future as it doesn't look good.

I agree they have not been making good decisions hence my "if they play their cards right" note. However, the spectrum in Clearwire is minor compared to what Sprint owns. Why aren't they using it? I'd say why not sell some of it off to pay for your network expansion. I heard ATT is paying top $$$ for spectrum

Hence the "all but dead" part of my statement. Clearwire is obviously no longer the way forward. IMO, the 1.6B money infusion was to stave off the impending lawsuits that would have happened if Sprint would have allowed Clearwire to go under.

Clearwire is licensed for 100Mhz+ in most markets. That is more than Sprint's entire spectrum holdings (2G,3.xG, and 4G combined) according to this chart.
----
I will address my other answer about why they are spectrum squatting in a day or so. There are a lot of factors on why *every* carrier is spectrum squatting. It will take a bit to gather all of the news / fact sources on this.
I will, however, leave you with homework on this. 1. Find charts on average U.S. home Internet speed increases over the past 5 years. 2. Find charts on average U.S. mobile Internet speed increases over the past 5 years. 3. Overlay them.

interesting but i kinda saw it coming, only this would make sense
it was either sprint or ATT ... and sprint doesnt like GSM
i wonder how is that going to improve reception on our atrix since we are on 850 / 1900 / 2100 band .....
or maybe by the time the merger is done i'll buy a new cellphone already
All hail the ATT tyrant!
BOOOOOOO I say. I hate AT&T and all their IPhone loving zombie customers. My 12 year old T-Mobile account (formally voicestream before the name change) will be cancelled the hour the acquisition goes through. AT&T will not see one red cent of my money.
I dont mind it... Tmobile is spottiest of all carriers around here, so should only make both of them better...
However, how will it work w/ the 3G/4G? They are different bands, hence why jailbroken and unlocked iphones never had access to Tmo's 3G, just edge. Does our phone support their bands as well?

It doesn't work that way. They will be using T-Mo's backhaul only towards LTE deployment and maybe in support of the H+. So any current phones will not be affected by this in any way, meaning you will not be able to pick up a T-Mo Nexus S and use it on AT&T 3g, nor will you be able to use an Atrix on T-Mo "4G".
I live in eastern PA. My wife uses Tmobile and I have ATT. We both use the Captivate (hers is unlocked). In the year or so we have been with each carrier I have dropped about 2 calls to her 20-30. Since she has been with the captivate it has been a little better because of the better phone/modem but Tmobile has been spotty for a loooong time with little improvement over the years. This should work out well for both ATT and Tmobile customers. Tmobile customers may have to pay ATT/Verizon like prices sooner or later but the trade-off for the way better coverage should be worth it. Sprint & Verizon to merge next? Sprint is clearly the weakest of the bunch now by a longshot.

Ok so I called Sprint because of my horrible 3g speeds and he told me it was because of my area..which is true since I live in downtown..but he told me not to worry because all Sprint towers will be converted to 4g and then he said its gonna be as fast as regular cable internet..not sure about that part but we will see!!!!!!!!!
Did they say any kind of time frame? Does 4g & 3g even run on the same tower? Sure he wasn't just feeding you something? If the signal is too bad and you complain enough they will give you an airave

Actually, Sprint is in the process of converting old towers which required separate componants for 3G and WIMAX and converting them into new, smaller, all-inclusive towers so that they will be 3G/4G

this, and the first post in this thread are completely false... what are you guys smoking?
Sprint doesn't own any Wimax equipment, it belongs to Clearwire.
Clearwire will only be building out 4G Wimax sites in major cities, the suburbs will be built out by OpenRange..
so, there can never be a combined 3g/4g cell site, they will always have separate equipment for both.

Nice.
Funny how this goes in sharp contrast to what Verizon seems to be doing, case in point: the newest OTA for the Thunderbolt, it adds a bunch of Verizon bloatware, not to mention removing the free tethering option that was previously available on the phone.
I also wouldn't mind if it came loaded with bloatware, as long as all of it was easily user-removable, just any other app.

It would be great if the openly allowed rooting to the point where they advertise and make sure the hw makers provide unlocked bootloaders for their network.
Will it happen? No, but it is a nice (water)pipe dream.
One of my biggest reasons for rooting in the first place was to get rid of the bloatware. I'm glad they did this after I rooted or I may have never learned all the other great things that come with a rooted phone
asyork, tried to thank you... but i reached my limit..
and yeah i wound up trying to do the same thing... unfortunately, i took the OTA update and am stuck until one of the devs figure out a way to S-OFF i'm unfortunately SOL but oh well...
Hi all
After seeing so many people with their speed tests posted as their sigs, I was curious as to what everyone's average speed was.
So if you want to participate in this thread, go on mobilespeedtest dot com from your phone, run a 7MB test using your 4G data connection, and post your results here. Post your location if you like as well, I'm curious to see what people get.
Or as michael2041 suggested, you can also use the Speedtest.net app if you'd like. Anything that's optimized for mobile devices and can give you an image to post up is free game.
Please don't cheat, this isn't a competition. This is just a fun thread for people to contribute to
Here's my results with T-Mobile in NYC.

the term xG, comes from the 1st Generation, 2nd Generation and so on. HSPA is the 3rd Generation. So wouldn't that mean HSAP+ is variant of HSPA. so it would still place it in the 3G bracket.

If that is true has why is wimax consider 4g when it was invented in 2001 long before 3g in 2008?
To correct you 4g has to do with theoretical download speeds not the generation of technology. Hence, why both wimax and hspa+ are considered 4g

I was told something completely different by a T-mo rep.
I was told that each generation has to meet 2 pieces of criteria. 1) has to be a updated hardware/software package then the previous version and 2) it has to meet a certain theoretical download speeds requirement.
Wi-Max is a updated software/hardware package then what sprint used prior to it. So they could call it the 4th Generation of Data transfer. Where as it didn't meet the specs of the download speed. I don't know how they got to use that name legally.
And didn't the counsel downgrade their standards to meet what Sprint and T-Mobile were producing with Wi-Max and HSPA+?

to be considered a 4g the technology has to be able to achieve 100 mbit/sec download, which hspa+ is capable of.

We are legion, for we are many
where i live sprint has the best coverage. my friends with att and verizon all lack coverage where i don't. the north shore of long island from the middle and west towards nyc has no service though, any carrier. that's just ridiculous. its a rich area and they don't want cancer i guess.....or cellphone coverage. on the plus side though, sprint's cheaper than anyone else. as long as they're cheaper, i'll stay. i'm willing to pay less for ****tier service, but as soon as i'm paying as much as somebody with a good data connection, i'm gonna peace out. wimax was a joke though... i can't believe that.
