Ok heres what I would like to know guys. I am running CMY's stock desire CWR Rom. I want to change the kernel or update but I am not sure how to do so with a CWR build? The other part is when I do get a build upadte how to go about saving info, settings and flashing the new rom in CWR? Any help would be appreciated and I have searched but can't really find specifics to much about CWR?
To flash an update such as a kernel, save the zip file to your sd card. Then in magldr menu go to 8: AD Recovery (assuming you are running magldr 1.13 and that you have flashed a cwm 1.3 partition) - select install zip from sd card - choose zip from sd card, then navigate to the folder where the zip is stored, select the update and then select Yes to flash it.
If you want to save the rom and all apps and data, from the Recovery menu select backup and restore and then select backup.
Ok as far as the kernel that is exactly what I am doing. I do have magldr 1.13 and the 400MB partition not sure the version but the most updated CWR. Anyway it keeps giving me an error after I choose update zip and choose file. Cant remember what the error is but it won't open the zip file.
Are you choosing update zip or as I stated - install zip?
Ok I think I got it figured out....
Hi all expert and senior
I am currently using Dexter's new PRIMEE p9-3 ROM.
And now I plan to flash the kernel suggested by him.
I never install kernel before, so I want to make sure I have the correct steps before I start the installation.
1. Download picasso-hc-kernel-picasso-hc-kernel-master.tar.gz into SD.
2. Reboot into recovery.
3. Wipe cache and cache.
4. Flash the picasso-hc-kernel-picasso-hc-kernel-master.tar.gz
5. Install PRIMEE_AcerIconia-p9.zip
6. Install primee-patch-p9-3.zip
7. Reboot.
1 more question, can I use the tar.gz file instead of zip file??
.tar.gz? I think this file is a source, usually kernels and ROMs come in .zip
Check again that kernel thread and see if you can find a zip file.
Hi,
my A500 has got the stock ICS. I've also managed to root it. Only the stock recovery is still installed. I have no idea how I can install the ClockworkMod there. Or may I naively install ClockworkModRecovery via the Acer Recovery installer? -> Maybe someone can answer that.
My main concern is something else. In the stock ICS image the AcerRing is missing. But the custom image FLEXREAPER has this on board and also offers a variety of ZIPs for customisation the Acer ring (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1517181).
Can I use the stock recovery to install the AcerRing? E.G. I rename the FLEXREAPER-R5-STOCK-RING.zip file to "update.zip" and copy it into the root directory of my SD card? Then simply using keys (which were the keys? Power+"Vol-"?) and boot into stock recovery mode and then the system installs the AcerRing automatically?
Thank you for your answers.
Install CWM via Acer Recovery Installer program.
Put ROM of choice on external SD
Boot into recovery via Power+Volume (closest to power button). This will put you into CWM Recovery
Goto Wipe menu and wipe data, cache and Dalvik cache
After wipes, choose "install from zip"
Install zip from external sd
Navigate to rom.zip
Install rom
Reboot and enjoy.

I don't think it is enough to flash a mod. A mod just changes colours and styles etc.
You need to install complete Flexreaper Rom to get it work.

AcerRecoveryInstaller warns me, that I have a not supported rom installed. It's the stock rom. Can I ignore this warning and install CWM Recovery?
I want to let this stock rom installed. I just want to install or uninstall system apps etc. or rather as I mentioned above to install the AcerRing.

The zip contains the AcerRing.apk and some META-INF directory. So I think it isnot only a mod of this app. I try to install the extracted apk but it was not successful.

Ok, I think you are right. The zip also contains update-scripts with paths-strings to Flexreaper paths etc. :-(
Just flash flexreaper. Its awesome. I personally don't use the ring though. But the mods are nice
Thank you all for your answers
Total noob.
Is there a recommended how-to doc that walks a noob through this process? I found this one:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379650
but it's not for devil and I'm not sure of the differences.
Follow the instructions in that walk-through, and once you have a working ICS rom (might I recommend SlimICS 4.2?) you can just download the devil kernel zip onto your SD card, boot into recovery (3 button salute), clear cache and dalvik cache, and flash the new kernel.
same itudive
Thanks for the tips.
I've only flashed with odin. How do I flash from devil from the SD card?
Once you've flashed the cf-root tar file from Odin, the recovery image on your phone will be replaced with a ClockworkMod recovery. Most ROMs, kernels, and other tweaks are packaged as flashable zips that you apply through CWM recovery.
LMGTFY: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-flash-zip-files-using-clockworkmod-cwm-recovery-on-galaxy-s/
So if you follow the HOWTO you originally posted, you'll have already used CWM once to flash your original ICS ROM (the stock kernel of which is pretty good). Once you've done that, you can download a flashable zip of Devil kernel (probably ~5MB, called Devil3_0.79_i9000_CFS_BLN_CMC_20120618.zip or something of the sort). Then boot into recovery, wipe cache, go into advanced and wipe dalvik cache, go into "install zip from sdcard">"choose zip from sdcard", select the devil kernel zip you downloaded, wait for it to install, then choose reboot system now.
Hi,
I have e400 rooted and cwm recovery installed.
I downloaded the rom in zip format.
Upon opening the zip i found a file named "boot.img"
Now i guess this boot.img file is kernel.
Can someone please tell me how can i install this kernel ?
I would really appreciate if someone gave step by step instructions to install custom rom.

You don't have to exctract the zip...you just need to wipe data,cache,dalvik-cache,and the flash the .zip of the rom...
Sent from my LG-E400 using XDA Free mobile app
You boot into cwm then wipe date factory reset and wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik cache then install the ROM(zip form) then reboot system.
