Hell yes.
Here is hope that Acer realizes the sooner they provide the community with what it needs to use our devices to their full potential the sooner they will move more units!

As soon as I saw Samsung released the kernal source it really got me down that I bought the Acer 2 weeks ago. Really like this tablet but with the lack of Acer opening things up I think my tablet is craigslist bound.

Too lazy to find the link but someone got a Tech Support response that the 3.0.1 kernel source would be out in the next week or 3. Hopefully 3.1 will follow more quickly.

I was just thinking... could it be that Acer is nothing but a marketer? They bought the device from OEM manufacturer somewhere in China, label it with 'Acer' and 'Iconia A500' and sell it.
That's why they know nothing about 'unlock bootloader'. Release kernel? Dream on!

Even worse, Honeycomb 3.2 is coming out within a few weeks and will be pushing to the xoom and possibly HTC flyer devices.

That's what I've heard too. I think the Huawei is the only official announcement for 3.2 at this point, with the flyer being rumored to be waiting on 3.2 for the update. So we're still only 1 real update behind.

One of the things 3.2 brings to the table is better support for 7" tablets (presumably 1024*600 resolution), but it also brings better hardware acceleration and bug fixes applicable to all Honeycomb tablets.

I would like to see a relevant and trustworthy source as well. Everything I've read says that 3.2 = 3.1 fixed for 7" screens and Adobe Flash 10.3 built in. I haven't seen where any additional features or fixes were announced.
Technically I don't see why they wouldn't fix whatever bugs are discovered in 3.1, BUT I'm guessing 3.1 is the final major release with 3.2 being a minor one and maybe 3.2.x being supplemental bug fixes until Ice Cream is announced and released.

Hi....so what is the stand of Acer related to us getting 3.2 ?
I hope the won't just update to 3.2 but also improve a lot a bugs related specifically to this tablet, for example rotation time....while using Virtuous Galaxy, one can tell this ain't hardware related but software related....
VG rom rotates sooooo much a faster than Acer roms that you can actually dare to rotate it..ans show friends how it handles it!
GPS also works poorly for me.
Well ....any comments or news?

The core 3.2 drop from Google isn't exactly that feature rich (just a few font/sizing smoothing and SD card improvements) - Offical 3.2 release notes - so I'm with you in hoping for some general performance improvements from ACER directly.
Overall I'm not really waiting for 3.2 (at least not as much as I was for the 3.0 > 3.1 update) - that might change if Acer actually notified the community more about *what* they are doing in their releases - most of the time the only way to find what's changed is by poking around the update file after it's dropped.

I know it's for sure too early talk about (and a bit off topic too), but while I think that 3.2 will come for both A500 and A501, I'm quite worried about the timing. I'm new to Acer devices (only have HTC Desire as a cell phone). To the ones who has other Acer devices: what's their "support lifetime"?
And, another fear is (again, too early to say) about 4.0: I hope we will be covered but... again, who knows about their support duration?

By the time 4.0 comes out, the Tegra3 will be launching right along side/with it. Time for some quad core lovin'!

That's for sure. I'm not updating my tablet or phone until ice cream 4.0 is out. The EVO and acer will have to do until then.

I've already made up my mind not to upgrade to a quad when it comes out. Duo is enough for me for now. The acer and gtab should last me for a while.

3.2 is for 7" tablet.. so why look for it?
expand/minimise window is nice , but 3.2? i think 3.1.1 would have be ok.
acer will not deliver anything good with 3.2, just resized window, what a fracking breakthrough..

well there is one part of the update that looks helpful: and that is the extended micro SD support. Meaning my music apps might actually be able to properly utilize my card.

I wouldn't worry too much. 4.0 will apparently be open sourced, like with 2.x, so rom builders can put together proper roms for the device rather than just modified versions of existing roms. 4.0 will come the iconia one way or another.

I agree that 3.2 is a minor update. However, if Asus and Moto are pumping it out I doubt that Acer will not follow suit. They already dropped the price to match the Asus so I have to believe they are keeping a close eye on the competition.
4.0 IceCream Sandwich is obviously the big update for the end of the year and really I'm thinking the a500 would be getting it. Probably not right at launch but fairly soon after. I'm of the opinion that Android has done a pretty good job of pumping out updates frequently and that keeps the carriers/manufacturers pretty loose with the hardware upgrade cycles. Meaning, unless there is a hardware limitation, I would bet the a500 gets the update since it has not been out that long. In the long run, even if it doesn't officially come from Acer, I'm sure the devs cook up some 4.0 goodness for us.

This is my first Acer so I can't speak on lifetime, but the joy of Android, I'll guess long after Acer has moved on to the next tablet (A600 ?) - there will still be some resourceful people here releasing custom ROM updates including whatever neat updates including in the next tablet generation - but I'll put money down that their support model will be slightly longer than most carriers and their phones.

well I'm in no rush for it and wasn't in a rush for 3.1 only thing I would like is for better gps

Don't quite follow the logic that because the 7 inch tab would be out, the 10 inch won't get it?? The 7 isn't considered an 'upgrade' just another option.

I'm not sure there was any? No need to look for something that's not there.
We'll get HC 3.2 the same way we got 3.1, 4-8 weeks behind Asia and Europe. I'm thinking we may very well get it here in the us by the time 4.0 comes out.....maybe?

We’ve been hard at work on CM9 since Google released Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) into the wild last month, and things are slowly starting to come together. Google did a great job with ICS and added some really awesome features which in some cases replace or deprecate functionality that we had in CM7, so we are reevaluating all of our customizations. A number of devices are already up and running with CM9, and the focus is currently on getting as many devices ready as we can. The first devices (besides the Nexus S, which you can already get from Koush’s section on ROM Manager) that we’ll have ready will mostly likely be devices based on OMAP4, MSM8660/7X30, and Exynos. We also have some Tegra2 tablets in the pipeline such as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Asus Transformer. Our goal is to provide continued support to all CM7 devices back to the QSD8250 series of devices such as the Nexus One. I don’t want to make any promises at this time, but that is the plan. And sorry Droid1 owners, we’re dropping support for you. Time to upgrade
There are a number of challenges that we are up against. Google has made some pretty major changes to the Android framework that break compatibility with older proprietary camera and graphics drivers in order to achieve some pretty insane performance, but I am confident that the team will be able to overcome these issues like we have in the past.
For those of you who like to build CM from source yourself, you probably know that the spin-up time when starting a CM7 build is absurdly long due to the high number of devices in our repository. Koush and Arcee have put together a solution to this problem that adds new devices on-demand to your local repository, saving on both bandwidth and the long startup time. Some other great enhancements are coming too, like a completely overhauled music app, a new file manager, and a new launcher based on stock 4.0.
If you have a Nexus S, you can check out the code and build for yourself today. More devices are on the way, and I’ll send out these status updates as we make more progress

Exactly what I was thinking. I love Prime and the work roach has been doing, but when I can get CM on the tablet, I will go running.

what's the advantage of CM vs Prime rom ?

Its Vanilla ICS. Most stable best battery life and best performance.
You have to try it to actually realize the differance. Which is like day and night

It'll be interesting to see what the difference is. CM is usually better than stock firmware sure so being as lean and cut-back as possible while still adding in extremely useful features.
Asus have done a great job of keeping their firmware bloat-free though, so it may not be too different, performance-wise. The biggest advantage will probably come from extended support. Asus probably won't upgrade the TF101 past 4.0 - having CM pretty much ensures that it will get every version of Android in the future so long as somebody is interested in getting it running.

A lot of the "bloat" Asus has added is incredibly useful. Polaris Office is really nice, and unavailable if Asus didn't include it. Same with Supernote, which is pretty good for free. Splashtop, again, expensive software included for free.
The **** I hate is them bundling things like Netflix... it's freely available on the market, and only available in select regions, why on earth would you bundle that?

Xoom not supported in AOSP

According to Jean-Baptiste Queru of the AOSP, the xoom and nexus aren't supported.... "There is no support for 4.2 on Nexus S and Xoom. Those devices should

unofficialy it will eventually come and it will run as smooth as nexus 10 because xoom has the capacity and hardware for it...it's not a big jump from 4.1.2 to 4.2

Don't kid yourself. The Xoom shows its age on 4.1.2 as it is. Compare the performance to a Nexus 7 or Galaxy Nexus and you can see the difference in speed. Just because the Xoom has the hardware to support the latest version, doesn't mean its going to keep up with devices with fresh hardware. Its coming up on 2 years as it is, which means a lot when there's new, better hardware coming out every ~6 months.

The one feature from 4.2 that I really wanted is multi user support. It was an obvious omission from tablets right from the beginning.

Yes, it's sad, but those that say it's a "marketing ploy" just need to realize how old the Xoom is and how much work it takes to port these new releases to devices. Money doesn't grow on trees, and neither do man-hours. Once the 4.2 branch started happening and the Nexus 10 hardware was finalized it became Google's standard 10-inch tablet internally. The guys who would have been doing the port internally in Google probably have N10s on their desks and their Xooms are collecting dust in some drawer. That's the way the world works.
That being said, if you look back to ICS, the 4.0.1 code dropped... and no Xoom support. Then the 4.0.2 code dropped... and no Xoom support. It wasn't until 4.0.3 that the Xoom gained AOSP support. I wouldn't be suprised to see the Xoom supported in a 4.2.2 (or later) release. The Nexus 4 isn't even supported in AOSP yet, for goodness' sakes! It will probably be someone's 20% time project and it will happen eventually.
Either way, if it doesn't hit AOSP, I'll either sell it to get some dough for a N10 (my mom has been talking about buying it from me) or lend my support to the porting process during the holiday break. The multi-user mode in 4.2 would be very useful on the Xoom.

Thats a bit of a hostile response, don't you think?
And if by "core," you're referring to the SoC, yeah it kinda does matter. The tegra 2 is a tad outdated, its architecture being a big part of it (A9). The Tegra 3 was a nice upgrade on Nvidia's part, with the Samsung Exynos 5 being even better than that. I'm sure someone with even more technical expertise could explain more in detail on the differences, but the architecture itself is a good indicator.
Now on to personal experience. I've put my Xoom alongside a Nexus 7 and my Galaxy Nexus, all running 4.1.2 and yeah, the Xoom is noticeably slower. I can't wait to see the Nexus 10's performance in person. No one here is saying the Xoom is **** or slow or whatever. But it is, gasp, slower than devices with hardware that is fresh and not 2 years old. Newer technology is better, who knew?
So yeah...no offense but given the delightful way you went about disagreeing with me, I'd say you were projecting just a tad.

The difference with those instances and now is that the Xoom was projected to get all of those, it just took a bit of time for it to hit AOSP. According to the google groups statement, the Xoom is slated to stay on 4.1.2 (I forget the actual quote). Now of course, that could mean, as you say, that it might just be a while for it to hit AOSP, but I think that's being a bit hopeful. Hopefully we'll get an official word on it soon but I think thats about it, at least with regards to AOSP.
And honestly, the Xoom had 18+ months of official support. For those that remember, 18 months was what Google wanted manufacturers under the Android Update Alliance to go by for supporting devices. So they've met their own target and then some with regards to both the Xoom and the Nexus S.

It would be nice for the Xoom to have 4.2 support, but even if it doesn't happen, its been a fabulous 2 years, right? Because I think it has

It has been a fabulous 2 years, we'll still get 4.2 support, just unofficially

No a very smart move by Google, me thinks, in not supporting Xoom after 4.1.2 ( Bless the custom mod gurus!!!). I know in my case I am going Windows Surface. Heres why, I just updated my 6 year old notebook to W8, and it flies.. new lease on life. If Google think I am buying a new tablet every 2 years, Stop the train, we have arrived at looney (google) central!!!!. Long live the custom rom(ers)

The thing is, 2 years is actually...kind of a lot relative to the other first gen 10" tablets. The galaxy tab 10.1 took forever to get ICS and was put at EOL after that (back in June/July I think). Asus has handled the Transformer series pretty well; the OG Transformer received a timely ICS update and I believe was updated to 4.1, not sure if they're going past that. And finally the Acer A500 I think met a similar fate as the Galaxy tab, ending with 4.0.
So that puts the Xoom at one of 2 of the 4 Honeycomb tablets circa 2011 (were there any other notables?) that made it all the way to 4.1. Not too shabby.

Not shabby at all. A shame though that the reason for not supporting is a time limit instead of a hardware thing.

As I type, somebody is building 4.2 for the G1. Look, we can take anything aosp throws at us and make it work on Xoom, to one degree or another. It becomes a matter of performance. At some point, a previous aosp build will just be better for Xoom than the newest build.

So does this meanTeam Eos is finished with rom support for the Xoom?

Just found in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1997434 that the system partition on the Xoom is rather small-could this be the reason that Xoom fell from AOSP support and didn't get all of the JB features?

Can the Xoom after all these years handle the new Ubuntu tablet OS? I hope so because i just return my Galaxy note 10.1. I guess i need to order a nexus 10.1

It looks like an awesome OS and I hope some of the amazing devs we have will be able to port it.
Ubuntu is open source and uses Linux kernel as Andorid does, so it should be doable.
Xoom's specs should be good enough to handle it, but until we don't put our hands on the OS we can't tell anything more specific.
However Nexus 7, that is one of the test devices for Ubuntu Touch has the same amount of RAM (1 Gb) as our tablet, so I am positive about it.

Xoom being non neon might be a problem. But that same issue is what cut off official support for 4.2+ versions of android, and I'm running a very functional 4.2.2 rom right now (EOS4).

It shouldn't be to hard since ubuntu touch os uses cyanogenmod as a base which we already have

It will be available as soon as you port it...
I started working on it a little last night but I'm getting a new computer next week so I decided to just wait. I don't want to spend the time to set everything up and have to do it again in another 5 days... Maybe someone else will start working on it in the meantime but honestly it still needs a lot of work. Right now it's worth flashing for about 5-10 minutes to satisfy ones curiosity and that's about it.

xyboard 10.1 lte
Since there is least to nil development for xyboard 10.1 lte, will the xoom or xoom 2 ubuntu be used for xyboard, or can some developer port it for xyboard 10.1 i am aware this request is way to early but better early than late or never.

Oh I can't wait I know one of our genius devs will make it happen

I believe pulled the motorola xoom to ubuntu developing

I setup the environment, and got the Xoom specific part to build but no boot joy. Im no dev but ill start trying to track down issues on my own. I also noticed the xoom is no longer listed on the devices page as a WIP.
