[TUT]How to unbrick Xperia Arc - Xperia Arc General

If your phone won't boot up (it's stuck at Sony Ericsson boot screen) and you can't get into recovery either, that means you bricked your Xperia.
You may think that you are screwed, but if your PC can recognise your phone when it's powered off (don't try booting it before connecting to PC!) I have an easy solution for you!
What you need to do is download UpdateService (Find it on Sony's site), and install it.
Don't run it just yet.
Than, connect your phone to your PC and when Windows checks it, run UpdateService (thing you downloaded)
Than, UpdateService will do firmware checking and in a minute you should be able to see it updating your phone to a newest firmware (.62 right now).
Now, this will take a few minutes, and when it's done phone will start booting, that also might take up to 5 minutes.
When it's done, you have your phone working again!
*This works only if you have your bootloader locked!
**You will lose all of your apps, so I hope you know what you had!

does not always work , but it is a good option to fix the phone

Since the pc recognizes the phone and the update service thing is not available anymore so we can even try to flash new firmware manually, by fastboot or flashtools! And what if one is already running the latest firmware, will update service still work?
If i helped you, hit the thanks button!

Sony Update Service (previously SEUS) is available here. Current version 2.11.12.5.
But 'No new software is available for your phone.' So that's good; it might be a shiny brick, but at least it's up to date!

nice tut., but its not easy to brick a phone with locked bootloader

It won't work on unlocked bootloader.

With the Arc S having fun on CM 10

Hi there! I think I've just bricked my arc ( it showes an exclamation mark inside a triangle and there is a phone close to it and it all right after sony logo). but the thing is that my bootloader is probably open( dont really remember). Any ideas of reparing?

Debugging isn't needed for that. You need to get your phone into flashmode. Use Search to find more info how to use Flashtool

intersting guide.......it's useful if i brick my phone:fingers-crossed:

First of all, when you are running your phone on the latest update, you can't use this process to unbrick/update your phone. So my guess here is, this post is rendered useless to people who have updated their phones to the latest update.
I am in Panic mode so yeah.

Going back to 1.6

Hello,
If anyone want to go back to 1.6, I made this guide to apply the downgrade to your E15i (X8)
1. Download the Xreria flasher from Bi4ary (one big thanks):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=827065
2. Download my decrypted ROM for X8
http://rapidshare.com/files/432487345/E15i_1.6.rar
3. Put the folder (ROM - .sin files) to Bi4ary flasher root folder
4. Follow the manual from Bi4ary's thread.
That's all!
anyone successed?
Thanks a lot!
Worked (non-gui version) smooth!
Worked perfectly thanks!

Turn off your device, push and hold the back button and plug the USB.
I don't understand. How is this possible with the boot loader being locked down 'n all?
thanks a lot ~~~~~~~
Sony uses the same kernel and drivers for both 1.6 and 2.1 so the update actually changes only the contents of the system folders. This is why unlocked bootloader is not needed.
So if X8 bootloader doesn't need to be cracked, why don't just upgrade it with a custom rom like 2.2
Without cracking the bootloader we can not use our own kernel and drivers. Of course custom 2.2 rom which uses sony kernel and drivers can be made. This is just what jerpelea and zdzihu make for X10. Unfortunately obviously there is no developers with X8 at this moment to make such rom. If you take a look at the topic for the 2.2 custom rom for X10 you will see that the old sony kernel makes some problems when teamed with android 2.2 (for example app2sd is not working) so it will be best if the bootloader is cracked.
HI guys. thanx a lot for your work.
my Bin4ry got stuck on -- flashing loader.sin...--
it is there for already 20 minutes
is it OK that it takes so long?
I really need to get my 1.6 back, thanks for help
--removed--
No, this means the phone was not connected or not found.
If you are using the no-gui version, than follow these steps :
start the .bat, answer all the questions, and get to the point where u see dots running (.............................................|)
At this point :
1. Take phone battery off.
2. Connect USB to computer, than to phone.
3. Press and HOLD back button
4. Insert the battery
5. Let go the back button (release)
Now you should see that phone was found and flashing process will begin.
During the flashing process you should see the battery led (orange/green) ON, if its not ON, it means phone is not in flash mode.
I hope this helps.

Probably off-topic, but if sony were to realese the source code to the 2.1 rom, could someone just modifiy it to add root, then flash it onto the phone?
We have the source code already, that's not the issue. The issue is that only their certified ROM files which have a digital signature issued from SE can actually be loaded onto production phones.
The bootloader won't load a file that hasn't been signed by SE's dev team.
We already have most of the source, anything except for the Market and other proprietary apps is in the open.
I'm a linux guy, so if I find the motivation over winter break (when classes are done torturing me), I might jump on the bandwagon. This is why I bought the X8 after all...
How I can change the "Phone Software Version"
I want to download the 1.6 from se update but they say that software is not there. The old build.prop has been restored, but the curent rom is actualy E15i Customized GBA World.
tnx.

ARGH. Why did SE do this? What could they possibly gain from locking down the phone? Why must they stop people from having control over their own phones? Goddamit sony!

[Q] Potencial Hard Brick - Help

OK. I am just gonna start this with: I AM STUPID!
Anyway, I was toying with my X8, all happy of my Android. I was in xRecovery, happy to know that I was going to install FroyoBread v007 (irrelevant to know, really), and I saw "Partition Options". "WHAT'S THIS?!" I go into that and see that I could delete /system, so I felt like doing it. *Applies anti-flame* After that, I was like "Oh man, xRecovery is not detecting my FroyoBread v007 .zip, just the v006!!!" "Let's reboot it!" After that... well... brick.
Current Situation:
I turn on, all that appears is "Sony Ericsson".
If I try SEUS (On PC Companion) or FlashTool, they don't seem to recognize the phone.
xRecovery, obviously, not there, since it was in /system/bin
Question: Is there ANY WAY (excluding taking it back to the store) to get my phone back working? (Even if it involves going back to the stock Flash, like I care!!!!)
Note: I am sorry if there's a thread already containing information to solve this problem in this forum. I am a bit in PANIC! I would appreciate that people don't pro-flame me for deleting the /system directory or for not adequately search for a thread that has the information I might need. In case of the existence of such, please redirect me to it so I can obtain an important piece of information in the world we know as Modding. Thank you for your consideration.

First of all, it's normal that SEUS won't recognize your phone, cuz it has NO software, so just select your phone model, and even if it sais unknown phone, proceed to update, it will fully restore SE android 2.1 , it worked for me

I think I did not emphasize enough on the OP that I am STUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPID!
I just figured it out. On SEUS I was doing something wrong. I was powering the phone on then holding back and then plugging the USB.

Dude, restart pc, reinstal gordon gate flash drivers, restart again

Update Messed Up Phone!

I bought my r800i today from O2 UK straight from the store, got home played around with it a little, connected it to my computer and installed the sony erricson Pc companion and it prompted for an update so i did that - but at some point it failed and now won't let me do anything to the phone - I can boot up and get a phone with an exclamation mark in a triangle or if i connect it via usb to the computer it connects/disconnects - update/repair also fails =|
Hi,
This will fix your unlocked Phones which got bricked through OTA update and are dead now!
Please download this package:
http://www.multiupload.com/Q103V01CV1 [Corrected Package; thanks blagus for finding the problem]
Let it extract to a destination of your choice.
After that run Flashtool.exe.
Now hit the button FLASH and select the package which is included.
Follow the steps and connect your phone in flashmode. This is the same mode Pc Companion and SEUS uses to flash your phone to newer firmare (Indicated by green LED), if you got BLUE LED you are in the wrong mode!
Flashtool will now detect your phone and start the repair.
After all is done your phone should be up and running again, if not please reflash with original firmware and WIPE userdata!
ADVICE:
PLEASE DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OTA'S ! If you receive a OTA message just decline, if you accept it you will end with a brick AGAIN! So please do NOT accept them until SonyEricsson provides a OTA solution for unlocked Bootloaders!
Best Regards
Team FreeXperia
I don't have an unlocked bootloader and don't want anything to do with any of that yet - dont want to void my warranty etc - if i were to return the phone could i download an ota update then?
Anybody? I can't charge my phone either - a green light just blinks and it goes into recovery when i connect it with my computer :S

Did this happen after using the flashtool?
If you haven't used flashtool yet, don't worry about using it, it doesn't unlock the bootloader (void warranty.)
Flashtool can only install signed (official) updates, and it's completely legit (i.e. What Sony Ericsson would use to fix your phone)
If you're not unlocked/rooted, you shouldn't have to worry about ota updates, you just got (very) unlucky, and either PC companion, your usb cable, or your phone decided to say screw you with this update (nothing against you personally, of course )
I don't know O2's return policy, but if you want to follow that route, they'll probably just give you a new one...
Sent from my R800x using XDA App
the O2 store are legally obliged to exchange/repair the handset free of charge. if it's still within 14 days of purchase, they should replace the handset so i would be heading straight back there
tom
Thanks everyone for the advice - didnt want to take back the phone since I'd have to ask my parents for the reciept and tell them about it...But i did and have a new play now... A little wary of updating now =/ ...
i wouldnt let it put you off updating as its probably been a bug in that particular handset that just hasnt been picked up before its been shipped out. if you're updating via a sonyericsson approved method you're covered by warranty
tom
*never mind what i said*
Second xperia play now bricked due to the update service this time rather than the pc companion due to me asking a sony erricson agent whether it would be safe to update and they said its 100% safe using the update service and even gave me a link for it and checked up on the issue and said phones only brick if they are rooted which i clearly stated my phone was not =|... NOT HAPPY AT ALL!

did you do the ota update (on wifi) our using your pc?
If you used your pc, I'd say looking into using a friends pc to try and update, that our if you still have the original micro usb cord that could be out, also...

Story of my life -_- - Nope a new micro-usb cord (came with the new phone) and got it using the update service program the agent suggested via usb - will prob just wait for ics - Dont think there's any major updates performance wise in 2.3.3 ... Back to the O2 store tomorrow i guess =|

Bravo good sir, your persistence paid off... but that's still really messed up that it took 6 tries before you actually got it to work... makes me kinda glad that I can't use PC Companion to update my phone (downside... i can only use 3g to update, stupid verizon....)
Pc companion isn't very nice =| and 3g updating is just slow - nothing else
Many thanks, after 4 days of various flash tools and firmware versions, this package unbricked my phone , silly update came in while i was sleeping.

[Q] I think i Hard Bricked my phone - Help someone

Hi Everyone, noob here.
I cant remember the exact procedure that i took, but i rooted my phone, and used x-restore to load floyo onto my x8, i did not really like it and wanted to try a newer version of cyanogenmod -7.1 and i had to flash custom Kernel on.. anyway - i tried flash tool and it said restart your phone and under app settings check the box for allow unrecognized or unsupported files or something like that - sorry i don't recall what it was exactly.. this is my first time doing this. it failed again, so disconnected my phone and just restored floyo and decided i was going to be happy with it.. i had tried to use the plugin to unlock the bootloader after testing it to make sure it could be done.. as the forum said.. and all looked good. but i forgot to close flashtools when i was done trying.. i restored floyo and and then made the mistake of plugging the phone in while flashtool was still on and looking for the phone.. the next thing i see a message pop up saying bootloader unlocked successfully or something similar.. restarting phone.. then my phone restarted and it did something else.. i waited for it to Finnish and then my phone went off..
Now it wont come on at all, no LED, nothing.. The phone is one week old.. i fully charged the battery last night so its not the batter i have Hard Bricked it.. and im freaking out..
I am a computer tech that has never failed to fix any computer problem and have repaired thousands.. i have experience in electrical work and have built tonnes of gadgets like small amps etc... but when it comes to this.. i am a complete Noob and i accept that.. ive screwed up and all i can do is ask for help..
i read through tonnes of forums but none seem to match my case so i thought it ok to ask for help.
What can i do, other than own a $300 paper weight.
Just restore with SEUS or PC companion and install something good like Semc Debrand Engine
I'm sorry to tell u that
u have to go to SEMC to repair it
unless u unbricked it by PCC or SESU
as if u want to fix it u'll pay 100$ or above to fix it

The symptom you describe there is a HARD BRICK. No LED, no display, no vibration, no nothing means it's DEAD - HARD BRICKED.
There's nothing you can do yourself other than to send it to Sony Ericsson for repair.
Since you said "Zimbabwe" I doubt you have repair shops with the required equipment and technicians to try a JTAG restore.
So I'd say your only option left is to send it off to SE - and once you get it back you better don't mess around with it if the $300 you mentioned means US Dollar (insane price).
EDIT: And the mistake you made ... you somehow made Flashtool to unlock your boot loader on a device that's most likely past a manufacturing date of 11W29. This kills the phone and you simply can't repair it yourself anymore ... see the Hard brick warning - read before boot loader unlock sticky in the X8 General board. There are several posts clearly telling you that everyone who managed to hard brick the phone sent it off to SE as there's simply no "fix it yourself" method available.
Hey guys, i cant do any of those suggestions because my phone is not coming on at all ... is there anything else i can do ? anyone ?

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play PLEASE HELP

Hello all,
My friend just gave me his Verizon Sony Xperia Play to root, no big deal. Read you have to downgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.3.3... download flash tool. Try to flash r800.ftf firmware a few times.. never works. Then, I tried to boot it up and it just shows the Sony Ericsson logo then, white triangle with orange exclamation point. PLEASE help, I don't know what to do I think it is bricked.
-thanks
PLEASE!? Does someone know how to help? I am freaking out right now.
Don't know why flashtool wouldn't work. If I were you, id try repairing with Sony PC Companion.
Code:
http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/
Install it. Navigate: Support Zone > Phone Software Update > Repair phone
You would likely get more replies if this was posted this in Q&A section.
Also, try being more clear when asking a question. "firmware a few times.. never works." what does never works mean to someone reading this? it could mean any number of things. Why didn't it work, did you get some sort of an error message?

Well I ran the 2.3.3 .ftf file again for like the 13th time and this time it worked. It booted normally and is now running 2.3.3. Unfortunately it is extremely buggy and force closes apps a lot. So now is the time when I 'repair' It with the PC Companion I think. Thank you very much for your help! :highfive:

No problem. Glad to hear you got it working again
FYI. Depending on the firmware it restores to, you can use DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su method to root GB 2.3.4. It can't root the absolute latest version (I think .62) which already patched the exploit, but mine always repairs to 4.0.2.A.0.42 and that roots just fine.
