SGS resetting and crashing under 2.3.6 - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi All
Im on Viirgin UK and using a shop unlocked SGS v2.3. 6 XXJVUstock, no mods or 3rd party add ons (Dec 2011). Since updating 4 weeks ago, my sgs has crashed occasionally, locked up, crashed on the Photo Editor and even on openning the camera itself, also, its reset after ending a phone call, so I uninstalled Fancy Widgets MIUI weather and clock and End Note, and a few apps but where Im finding it still crashing is after using the stock Music player for a few hours. The GS resets and re-boots.
So I downloaded Winamp and its still resetting after a few hours on Winamp as well.
I have re-downloaded, but not yet flashed back to 235 JVT, but I do like the new 236 UI and camera.
Any Advice..
Night

I had exactly the same problems like you.First on the begining it ran ok after a while problems came.I think this is because it's early beta leaked rom but i must say that all roms that i had on my sgs not a single one didn't work like my old swiss watch
So i feel like beta tester for android

Yeah me too.. Im thinking of going back to 235. I do like 236, but its just crashing on everything. Sept 235 seems to just handle anything, but not sure whats happening.
I think the OP for 236 did say it was a leaked rom, Oh well, not to worry.. I did see the ICS thread, looks interesting.. may try that, but Im more of a stability over speed kinda user.
Thanks for the reply ppavlovic.
Cheers

If you want to stay on 2.3.6, flash the JW1 PDA instead.
It is currently the most stable stock ROM released for the SGS.

Thanks Black Rose. Is this the issue.. will that help the Media player crash and the random resets.
My SGS is my main Media, MP3 player, so I like it to be stable... Thanks
Night

I wonder what is the most stable, fast and non battery eater rom of all leakes roms until now?

I've never used the media player that long, so I can't comment on that.
I've never had a crash with the leaked or official versions of JW1 in the almost two months that i've been using it.
I do have an issue with bootloops if I leave wi-fi enabled when I turn the phone off, but I've only seen reports from myself and one other person about this.

Im in UK on Virgin Mobile and The best one IMO ive ever flashed yet is XXJVT 2.3.5 (Sept 2011 Open Europe) with only 1 reset in the 3.5 months I used it. Also, this version comes with Daily Briefing, which is useful for me.
Give it a try, let me know how it goes..
Black Rose, will JW1 function on an Unlocked UK SGS.
Cheers

There were two official releases of JW1 XEN(unbranded) and KPN (Netherlands).
I am running XEN on a locked Canadian SGS (gt-i9000m).

I've been on jw1 for a couple of months also and have had zero issues. No reboots no, nothing can't remember the last time my phone was off or had a force close.
JW1 + semaphore + DMore rom.
Phone running so good I can't be bothered to switch to ics.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium

i will give a try to both roms.Currently i installed the latest froyo from may 2011xwjsd because i had problems with exchange email in gb.I use 2 exc. accounts from 2 firms. On one is security that phone must be encrypted but when i choose to do so phone reboots it encrypts itself and falls into boot loop mode.I guess it encrypts the crucial boot files so it cannot start again And this is the issue in all GB roms for me.

Ive only flashed stock roms before from the files from SamFirware, so can I check...
Ive decided to give 236 another go, but before i go ahead, can I just check.. In ODIN 185, I set:
JW1 Xen = PDA / CSC Multi OXAJVU = CSC / ModemXXJVU = Phone. So all im doing is swapping the stock CODE file for JW1 XEN.
As this is a complete upgrade from JVT do i need re-partition + PIT.
Im in UK on an unlocked SGS.
Thanks all

Optus Australia & Samsung Galaxy S

Hi peeps, I just wanted to tell you about my experience with this phone and with Optus.
I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S from them earlier in September. The 3 button recovery method never worked on the phone Eventually I did brick it, when a lag fix failed to complete un-installing when moving files (RyanZAEXT2LagFix BETA 2-3).
The phone wouldn't boot, it kept re-booting repeatedly on the first Samsung Galaxy S screen. Anyway I took it in 1 day before the 2 week swap over period expired, lucky me no waiting for repairs!
Anyway the 3 button recovery method works on the new phone The manufacturing date on the battery on the new phone is 8/10 on the non functioning one it was 7/10. I'd recommend anyone purchasing this phone to check that the 3 button rec mode is working before walking out of the store. I have a feeling it just isn't Optus, but is probably a bad batch? :| Interested to know of others experiences.
I dont think anyone really knows why 3BR doesn't work on some handsets. Anyways, I got mine on Aug 6 through Virgin (delivered by Optius). 3BR mode is working, and no GPS issues
I got mine from optus just when it has been released and I have no issue witht he recovery ... so nothing to do with optus phone
G'day,
I got mine from Optus about a month ago. No 3BR mode at all. I have since ventured into flashing on Android (having owned a Touch HD for nearly two years and flashing Energy's ROM's once a week) and doing the regedit to flash the JH2 ROM, then Odin to get back to JG4.
Since doing this, 3BR has worked without a problem. I don't care how it has been fixed, because I just wanted to make sure I could flash to Froyo when it is released.
Hopefully Optus will come up with the goods soon!!!
I bought mine outright from Allphones, but it's Optus branded. 3 button recovery works perfectly.
This is definitely not limited to Optus phones. There are plenty of international members who have the same issue. Have a look around on this forum and you'll see.
When i got mine 3br was working then i briked and flash using oding for optus firmware 3br wasnt working then I reflash using kies now 3BR started working again.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I bought mine the day of release with Optus. Battery Date 2010.06.12. It's always worked fine with 3 button recovery. It came with JF1 Optus firmware and I've flashed it with JF3, JF4 (Optus), JG5, JM2, JP3, JM6, JPC, JPH (current). JM6 and JPH have been great for the GPS and Compass. The others were all a bit average for the GPS and outright shocking for the compass.
I got my sgs on july and 3 button always work
got mine
I got my phone on the 2/8/2010 through telechoice on virgin but it had optus firmware on it and the 3 button recovery worked.
Got mine in mid August from Allphones on an Optus plan.
No 3 button recovery.
Rooted using TA Gunnman 1 click root (PC USB way) and lag fixed with RyanZA OCLF.
Do scared to try anything else without 3 button working
Edit: Is it safe to use Richthofen's 3 button ZIP/update fix on my Optus SGS? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201
Edit: Nevermind,Ive read up on it,tested and confirmed by other Optus users as working so I tried it and it worked.
Now Ive also got 3 button recovery..What a load off...

I have also seen it worked for Virgin users too - however, this link seems to have disappeared - what's the latest method to fix the 3 button recovery/download modes?
Cheers,

My optus phone has the date 23/07/2010 and when I got it, it was on 2.1 and it didn't have 3br but after I flashed new bootloaders it has worked since. Now on gingerbread with JVP modem and I couldn't imagine being back on 2.1 or 2.2
I've had mine for about 12 months now, and it had 3 button from start (which has come in handy) Was on 2.1 when I got it, hung out for 2.2... and getting itchy feet for 2.3... though I may just end up jumping ship and ROMing it...
Had so many problems with it when it was running on RFS - constant FC's and shut downs and all sorts of problems like that (I was even missing calls because it was taking so long to think about bringing up the answer buttons). Rooted, lagfixed and I'm actually happy with the device... though still want 2.3.4... Come on Optus/Samsung... how long does it take to "test"... the only thing they are testing is our patience!! *RANT ENDED*

Right, thanks. I have read through that thread a bit before. Thing is, you need to get root first to confirm whether or not the phone can actually be successfully flashed using that method - I know there's SuperOneClickRoot or something but I also read that can stuff the phone too.
Or did you just take a deep breath and load up a 2.2.1 ROM?

[Q] ROMS LAGFIX etc.

I have a few questions.
I understand there are official updates for our phones 2.1->2.2 but they are operator based. So there are customized roms, that are with custom stuff.
I'm really intereseted in upgrading from 2.1 official rom to a custom, but dont know exactly which one to choose.
I once flashed a 2.2 but it bricked my phone, so i had it repaired (the phone didnt respond to any key combinations or anything at all).
So is there any point to upgrade if there isnt any stable roms.
And also why is everyone waiting for the official update from samsung when there are already 2.2 roms for 5800.
Lagfix seems like a thing to try out, but i want to be sure which rom is the best and so that the basic stuff works.
Don't know about others, but my reason for not upgrading to unofficial/custom ROMs is that I don't want to risk my phone (even if that risk may be small..)..I also don't have time to backup data, reset phone, re-install app.s, do settings again etc. which might be needed in the flashing process.
Besides, from what I read in this forum, none of the ROMs seems to be satisfactory enough & ready for prime time. But frankly, I am losing my patience fast & may soon go for a custom ROM if official upgrade doesn't arrive by end of this month..damn Samsung for taking sooo long..

Why don't you use a stock 2.2 ROM like the JPF?

Sure ^^ and you cant brick your phone if you dont flash your bootloader^^ jpf also works faster^^ i would recommend to flash a custom rom. Like lestatious one. Everything works well on it^^ have fun

just dont flash the bootloader and you can always reenter download mode.
backing up isn't that big of an issue, titanium backup backs up pretty much everything.
If you're planning on using titanium, just be aware that you should only restore non android apps when switching from eclair to froyo..i tried this and kept getting fc's. Just make backups of stuff in the individual apps like contacts etc, then restore them after you upgrade to froyo. Then make a full titanium backup of everything once you have your phone the way you want it. From then on you can just test any rom you like and always have a quick easy way of getting your stuff back. I recommend using astro to backup titanium so you can have a version to hand after flashing.
P.S. I use jfp ultra clean and it rocks my socks

Ok, i might try out the stock 2.2 rom... But what about lagfixes or are they even neccessary on 2.2?
Cause my current 2.1 stock rom is really laggy, i remove tasks to clean up memory but it's still kinda slow.
Well if you're flashing a stock rom I would definately suggest JPF because it's pretty stable. You don't necessarily need the lagfix though..I personally found it made things a bit strange with random hangs when closing applications. Oh yeah and don't forget to use the modded 3d gallery from SGS Tools (I use the "last" version). You should be able to install it via the "Upgrade stock apps" option. You can also use it to change your GPS pool to Europe if needed.

So the jpf rom isnt europe or just needs some configs like that? But is the stock rom the best option, i don't neccessarily need all those extra stuff like samsung apps and layar etc. Pauri mentioned lestatious rom, its on JPA, for example. Is each one one of those stock roms like an update with still some bugs on them or just converted from other phone updates?
I'm between that custom rom and the JPF stock right now..
Oh it's a european rom, it's just that the default gps pool is set to north america. I installed The modded 3d gallery as a work around for the battery drain bug that the stock gallery has in froyo. Jpf clean is what I'm using till theres a more stable lestat rom because I tried jp9, which was good, but the bloatware...oh my..

one more question, how do i root froyo 2.2 ?
i tried the one click method, after the command running it said everything is fine you're rooted. In recovery mode i tried to install update.zip but it didnt work.
havent see any alternatives for 2.2
can anyone help?

[Kies][XEU][JVQ] 2.3.4 is now official!

Unfortunately isn't JVR, but... JVQ is now available on Kies for XEU product code!

The version that kei_kusanagi uploaded is the version JVQ we all know, cause the files in the .tar archive are all dated 10.06.2011 and one (modem.bin) from 09.06.2011
second that,
is this the same bulid date as leaked jvq
Just updated. Date 10 june 2011
so its the same date because i was going to put my phone back to jm1 then update it to jvq throught kies but if its the same theres no point in doing it
The cache.rfs is different, but i don't think that this fixes the bugs that we all know:
GPS not working at all for some people with JVQ modem. If you flash the JVO modem, it's working.
Auto brightness working only with a delay of ~15 seconds. For some ppl it does not work at all.
Phone app crash, if a call over Bluetooth was ended by the "other side". Phone needs to be restarted after this. Happens with or without custom kernels.
So why are Samsung putting out through Kies an older of Android verion JVQ when they have a newer one JVR?
Just put my phone back to jm1then went to update through kies was offerd as a update to jvp

cache.rfs is exact same as in darkys leak-push - same date/time and size
- gps is working as it should on stock system
- autobrighteness: (same)
sensor is checking every 4 seconds for lux change when screen on only - ok for me not much spam
it takes 2 seconds after registering change in lux to change brighteness - for me very good response time

if it is otherwise saay thanks to your kernel/theme developer for breaking it
- it is not so easy to trigger for everybody and in fact phone restarts the crashed modules in like 30 seconds or so
there are a lot more issues not fixed with jvq and fixed with jvr
Anyone got the "process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly" when ending a phone call yet or too early to tell dya think?
as it is the same files as in 'earlier jvq' the bug persist
Just updated from JVO to JVQ. Rooted with CF-Root-XX_UNK_JVQ-v3.7
Going to find jkays theme and get that back up and running.

Strange problems after insalling a customer ROM

The last time I've updated my SGS1 to ICS, it started after about 1 to 2 weeks, to slow down and it always ended in a bootloop. It just start to restart more and more often. I tried different ROM's, none worked. I tried to flash a Kernel after it starts to reboot - nope. Then I installed the original Samsung ROM, since it works.
Does anyone have any idea why the original ROM does and the costumer ROM does not?
Root? The kernel? Or maybe a hardware problem?
For about 2 years I use customer ROM's and have not had such problems. And you know, it is kind of hard to get back to GB... really...
Thanks for your ideas!

Now iam on XXDJV1 - it should be the latest version of the original Samsung ROM's. I did flash it with Odin, after that i deletet everything on the phone, flashed a CWM, cleared caches, flash with the zip files (Clean AOKP was the latest).... but do you think it could be different when i start it from the edge? Is there something i can do in a different way?
I really was thinking about Hardware defects, viruses or problems with the root/kernel...

LS8... another test rom?

I've read on this forum that some well-respected users* hypothesizing that LS8 may actually be just another test rom based on the following things:
- Only released in Spain (FOP) [not sure what the other 2 Chinese releases brought to the table)
- Bootloops/freezes seem to happen even while using the stock rom (this seems to happen to all users eventually)
In my experience, I had one freeze in which I couldn't wake the device. I turned it off, removed the battery,
and it got stuck on boot. Then I turned it off (by holding the power button) and turned it on again and it work. Hours later the same thing happened. I thought it was Jeboo Kernel 1.2's fault, but now that I read this I am uncertain.
So what do you guys think? Are we running a test rom? Did Samsung release it so that we would shut the hell up for a while? Or is it the real deal and it is the best we'll get?
*not mentioning them just to avoid them getting hatemail (actuallly hatePMs) if this proves not to be true

I would say so, why would they only release it in one country? I has to be released only in Spain so they can iron out the rest of the bugs, including the annoying freezing/random turning off ones that kill your battery. Battery drain has to be sorted also, so some call it the final build, but I reckon it will another month or two before we see the true "final" build, hopefully with all the bugs ironed out.
Question. ...are people getting these bugs you talk about if they run the rom bone stock no root? I do believe this was rushed out but not that its another test rom. Staying on my rock solid neat rom 4.0 with siyah for now. Something better is coming....fingers crossed.

This dev claims that the first time he installed it (straight from the sammobile odin file) it caused him bugs. I haven't tried the stock, untouched, unrooted version.
I've said before that LS8 feels unfinished.

I don't have any bug or freeze. I'm on LS8 with PhilZ kernel btw.
Until UK's XEU is out, I won't call anything "final".
I have the spanish rom, clean install. Without root, pure stock, odexed, not zipaligned... I had thoose problems using custom kernels and rooting my phone! going back to stock, everything is fine. I think that the problem is that some files are changed, I tried cooking my own rom and it didn't worked (ok a "first try").
I think that we must wait some weeks for good kernels, because the development of a kernel requires time. You can make one that boots in a short amount of time, but one without freezes... It should need some weeks.
No freezes, stucks nor bootloops for me. U'll get the best of it if u actually did total wiping rom & kernel by wiper scripts provided by hawkerpaul's especially if u ran custom rom & kernel before.
And u'll get worth battery savings if u wipe the bloatware by TiB & slimmin down ls8 at ur taste, those will grab out crappy ware from ur ram & kill the batt eater. Disable gnow, syncing at certains need & disabling fast dormancy if ur operator doesnt supported.
Just one so annoyed for me & does anyone has idea why : stock browser didn't run & got FC at custom dpi ??? and pls provide me a link a multi dpi playstore to install at stock recovery, the one I had got unsigned to install.
Please give me some respect for useful answer..

Never had this sort of issues with any ROM before. Sure I had buggy ROMs that crashed apps left and right, but never have I had to worry that forcing a reboot will corrupt the system.
So in my opinion there are two issues here. One being that the phone can freeze in pretty much any app. The other being that holding the volume and power buttons down to force a reboot will ruin the boot sequence somehow.
In some ways, the inevitable freezes bother me the most. On my old 4.0.4 RR AOKP ROM I just to have this issue where scrolling too fast in lists in certain 3rd party apps (like Amazon, Techpowerup, Ebay etc) would freeze the phone and I had to reboot. Well, at least it never broke the OS ...
I got the tip from the official Jelly Bean thread that backing up, wiping and restoring an installation with a boot freeze / loop will in fact bring the system back to life. As to why this works I have no idea.
I also noticed someone talking about possible issues with restoring apps via Titanium Backup, the Android ID and some mismatch. I have never seen the Android ID pop-up in TB though and I assume this is just another developer mantra, like wipe - reinstall - wipe - reinstall. In truth they seem to have no clue what is going on.
Good job Samsung, good job ...
Well. I too think that this is a test release. One for Europe and one for Asia (China releases). We'll have the proof when we will see the next releases in other countries (like UK XEU and/or Nordic NEE). I assume that there will be different PDA's with newer changelog.
But, from my experience, this release is very good. I flashed it from the first day it has been released via Kies and I kept it unrooted since (only disabling some apps). I haven't experienced any of the issues mentioned time and again in this forum and the battery is on par with ICS 4.0.4 LPY for me. 2d10h with 2h screen on.
Maybe I'm lucky or maybe this is the way to go for now (kies and all stock), until the dev and optimizing process matures itself.
Compared to CM10 and LSJ, this ROM have been the the most smoothest and most stable ROM. I haven't encountered any freezes or instability since I installed it last week. However I did loose service last saturday, presumably a RIL crash, but since restarting it have been running problem free for 69 hours.
I have kept it completely stock, but it is rooted through Mobile Odin.
LS8 is not a test rom, Its available via kies so its public final, The fact that its only been released via Spain so far is irrelevant.
All the people moaning about problems are also irrelevant since you will always have some people who have issues after updating to new rom whether its Sammy official or a custom.
LS8 is very stable and very smooth for me.
i never seen such an crappy rom, its unstable.( xwls8)
First, format my card, rom, etc, put xwls8, default kernel.
After 1-2 hours the bugs appears: when i click on almost anything( like any game, my file, es file explorer, stweak, etc), it freeze, then i was force to close and start again the phone, then bootloop.
Or after an force shutdown i stuck at samsung logo.
I tried siyah, dorimanx, etc, wipe cache, etc, etc
Then after 4-5 days of bugs an unlimited shutdown, freezes, etc, i wipe everyting an install 404 xwlq3, stuck at samsung logo, force to install the rom again, etc.
Now im on xwlq3 and dorimanx 5.92 till a new rom appear. This 4.1.2 is not usable.
Previous one, xxlsj, except lag on lock screen, i dont seen serious bugs.
Boy this xwlq3 rom it feel so nice and fast. And no bugs.
If any of you read on siyah , dorimanx, philz, rootbox, etc,etc thread you will see that a lot of us have this problem.

LS8 feels unfinished.
Yes, people may have issues after upgrading but those people are silly and invariably don't know what they're doing. I am however sure that I don't fall in to this category.
Yes, it may be an official release but even so it seems rushed out to appease the masses who were getting sick of waiting.
Yes, it is you lot who're at fault for rushing Sammy in to releasing sub-par, unpolished updates.
I hope you're all happy!

ROM NeatRom Lite 4.2 XWLS8
Kernel Philz 4.00b30
Mods:
23 toggles blue w/rt clock
Automatic Call Recorder
Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but is it necessary to change the CSC after flashing this ROM?
I've been using LS8 + Siyah 6.0
Not getting great performance. No hangs/freezes but my battery drains pretty quickly.
