Nook color 8GB now $199 - Kindle Fire General

For those of you unsure choosing between a Kindle Fire and a Nook Tablet (like me), B&N just announced a new 8G model for the same price as the Kindle Fire ($199).
Here´s the product page:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/nook-tablet-barnes-noble/1104687969
That also means that you can now get a refurbished Nook Color for $135 (or $169 new).

With a locked bootloader I will not be getting one.

So does the NC have anything the Fire doesn't besides removable storage? Its not dual core, and like dude said; locked boot loader. No contest when they're both the same price, Fire wins all day long.
Damn you Swype!

I would first look at the XDA page before purchasing. It doesn’t look like much is going on. I looked it over last week when I heard this and at this point it looked like they had not gotten much going on, just doubled checked and still not yet a stable CM7 build. Don’t get me wrong I plan on purchasing one at some point but at this point in the game given the choice would likely keep my Kindle.

I think you meant in the topic title nook TABLET not color... And the only advantage it has over the kindle is the removable storage, they knocked the ram down to 512 Mb so its not worth it.

Kindle is still better with its 1 GHz Dual Core processor! NookColor is one core 800 MHz I think but i still believe that Fire is the best choice

The fire has the amazon store and video for prime members. This is why I chose the fire. Tested cm7 but uninstalled because of issues in portrait mode.

Who else is second guessing between the Fire or the Nook Color 2?

Who else is thinking that the Nook Color 2 with a memory expansion slot may be a better offering than the AF? Of course if it has a better screen, faster processor, and the $199.99 price tag?
Hard to say right now. Will have to wait for the B&N announcement in Nov.

I know I'm curious to see what B&N will offer with the nook 2. If its as root friendly with expandable memory and other great specs even at a higher price point I may be getting the nook 2. I just hope the nook 2 is lighter. not that the current nook is rediculiously heavy but still.

Dunno, I'm more interested in the Silk browser than anything B&N could probably entice me with.

Yeah and the Silk browser is probably very interested in you too.
How's about if the NC2 has
+ same hw spec. as the NC but add dual-core CPU
+ Thinner and lighter
+ Add camera
+ Add GPS capable
+ Add microphone
+ $200 will be awesome, $250 is still ok.
The NC2 is now the Nook Tablet. And the specs look sweet.

I had the Kindle Fire on pre order, but most likely I'm going to cancel. The Nook Tablet looks to be worth the $50 over the Fire.
Sweet Im liking Barnes and nobles response to the kindle fire the new nook color is going.to be sweet Im ready to cancel my kindle fire order and order up the new nook color !

Dang, how many people are gonna still get the Fire? I'm getting whatever has the more active and productive devs.

Still Getting it
It's 200 bucks, I'm keeping my pre-order, Now I am thinking about the nook as well, but for 200 bones, it's so cheap, I'll just get both, even if I don't use one of them, someone in my family will.

Knew that B&N would take it lying down.
I saw the leak specs and cancelled my AF ASAP. The B&N tab will lead because of having a micro SD slot. I bet it will be rooted by Veteran's Day.
Maybe I'm missing something, but last I checked this thing has a USB port... So yeah... Gonna keep the preorder, and then probably pick up a nook tablet later.
Ad-Hoc tethering?
Is the Nook able to tether to a smart phone? Because Amazon says the Fire can't be. If the Nook can be then I'm cancelling my Fire pre-order!

Fire CAN be tethered to a phone that's broadcasting an infrastructure AP....and so can the NC2. As far as connecting to an ad-hoc AP, just going to have to wait and see when it comes out...or at least, until more info drops.
I have a theory:
If a whole bunch of people cancel their pre order for a nook 2 wouldn't that mean they have built waaay too many kindle fires which would force them to lower their pricetag?
However that all depends on how many ppl want the nook 2

They are selling them at a loss, there is no way they will drop the price any lower.

Should I return my nook tablet for a kindle fire?

Here's the deal...
I have a rooted nook tablet. I love the size and having gapps on it, and overall I just really enjoy the device. I did, however purchase the NT with the intent of having custom roms/seeing ICS on this puppy. Premature purchase, yeah I realize that may be the case now. I wasn't familiar with bootloaders and what that meant.
Originally I was torn between the NT and the KF as I'm sure many others were. The micro SD and the extra ram, despite the cost, were huge selling points. The e-book library size of B&N also played a role in that I wanted text books and I figured B&N would be more likely to get them than amazon.
What I didn't expect...the miniscule size of the B&N shop/app store compared to amazon. I didn't do my homework obviously. But seeing as how they are both rooted I guess that doesn't matter too much now. However...the possibility of losing root from an update pushed via B&N terrifies the crap out of me if I would get stuck only with the nook shop. Amazon only wouldn't be too bad if it got locked down, but Amazon seems more supportive than B&N of the idea of rooting with the unlocked bootloader. I don't care about HD Netflix. If that's the only reason, who cares about it.
There's no locked bootloader, So theoretically CM build with ICS should be possible?
I'm contemplating unrooting my Nook Tablet and returning it within my 14 day window and picking up the kindle fire. I am a little concerned with the 512 MB of ram vs. 1 gb on the nook tablet.
Has anyone noticed much lag/ do you think 512 will be limiting?
With a seemingly higher chance of the KF remaining more open, does that outweigh the ram? How does the KF feel in the hand? Light enough? Compared to the NT?
Any thoughts / insight are greatly appreciated. I'm having a really difficult time with this decision alone.
Thanks for your input!

I was playing with the new nook today at store and I'm kindle glad I went with kindle. The nook has a toy feel. And seems like I would brake it fast. To everyone their own. If you feel the kindle is for you then go for it I'm loving so far I don't have complaints so far nothing I did not know before I bought it. It can be a little buggy but for the most part could not be happier. The only thing I would say is never use the built in home launcher things I hate it with a passion. It's a good app for amazon stuff but should not be the default home. That's just my 2 cents

Thinking about buying a Kindle Fire.

So my friend is willing to sell me a Kindle Fire for $60.
I'm heavily thinking about buying it, but I also want to save for a Galaxy tab.
Either, way I can get the Kindle Fire for the right price. But is it actually a decent tablet like device? Performance wise that is. Also, I kinda want one because I know some group of intelligent people are going to port a working Gingerbread or even Honeycomb ROM. Thus making it a full tablet.
tl;dr
Should I buy a Kindle Fire?
Is it good performance wise?
What do you want to do with it? I use it for web, forums, other basic Internet activities, and it works very well.
//Tapatalk.KindleFire//
60 bucks? What's your hold up? You can't go wrong at that price.
Boo
It depends on what you need it for. The KFire doesn't come with Bluetooth, GPS, 3G, camera, or a built in microphone. So if you really depend on those features then I would get the Galaxy Tab. The KFire is still a great device though. You can read books, watch movies from Amazon Prime, get apps from Android Market, and much more.
Performance-wise the KFire's processing speed is 1Ghz, the same as the GTab but the Kindle Fire has 512mb of RAM while the Galaxy Tab has 1GB. Don't worry about the performance of the Kindle Fire because 512mb of RAM is more than enough. Even the Galaxy Tab only makes 512mb of its RAM usable anyway. The overall performance of the Kindle Fire and the Galaxy Tab are the same though.
Hope this helps!

I love mine. Awesome machine for the money!
Galaxy Tab 7 Plus and KF performs the same? HHmmmm. Not in my experience. The GTab is an android tablet where the KF (and NT) are really e-readers running android. Not that that is a bad thing. With all new shiny things there's a bit of giddiness and excitement as it should be. The KF is, and IMO will continue to be a serviceable unit primarily for reading and content consumption via Amazon. With all the new tabs coming out Devs are going to be hard-pressed to choose which to dig into. Likely choosing the ones with the greater return on time expended. Remember. most Devs do this because it's fun on their free time. HC and ICS on the KF? I have strong doubts on official releases. Ports perhaps but upgrading the OS doesn't have a return on investment for Amazon. They're making a buck or so on the units. Their profit is via content. I see Amazon releasing official upgrades ONLY if OS-specific content that they can charge for (locked down from their site/store). Heck even BN only released 2.2 from 2.1 on the NC after a year and that was for flash support (for BN content).
Perhaps I'm being cynical. Or realistic. But points to think about.
What are you waiting for? I though $199 was a steal! especially since it has an external mic capability is a bonus!

Switch to Nexus 7?

I am thinking about switching from my rooted KF to a Nexus 7.
I like the increased processing power and memory along with BT and a GPS chip.
Getting Jelly Bean is icing on the tablet.
I will use my KF as a permanenty hooked Pandora player for me home audio system.
Anyone else thinking about switching from KF to Nexus 7?
Absolutely NOT.... lol
I am currently selling my 2 iPods on CL, I'm hoping not to sell my Kindle Fire, but I might have too.
I really want the Nexus 7

I would wait to see what a 2nd generation Kindle Fire would have to offer.
I'm torn between selling my KF, keeping it, and getting the Nexus 7 (N7).
I decided I'd wait for Amazon to respond with their KF2. Though I can use USB OTG on both the KF and N7, is KF2 had the addition of Bluetooth, GPS, Camera, Mic, and a Micro SD card slot, then this could be a real new competitor.
Also, I really dislike how slow the internal memory on the KF is.
I sold my kf yesterday and pre ordered a nexus on launch day. I would have waited for the kindle fire 2 but I have a feeling the kf2 could have a locked boot loader.

i have a Nexus 7 on pre-order (through JR.com no tax free shipping, before the Slickdeals effect rippled through, we'll see if the pre-order actually sticks), but am tossed up on whether to sell the KF or simply keep it b/c i bought it during the last $139 refurbished Amazon sale and it's still awesome w/ the various CM9 ROMs and great Dev support here. truth be told, the KF w/ CM9 (currently running twa_priv's SGT7 build) does everything i need. don't need the mic or front camera, KF is more than snappy enough for my daily use, screen resolution @ my normal viewing distances is perfectly fine, etc.

Same here. I want the Nexus 7 just because its a nexus, but considering how little I use my KF its not worth the time/effort to sell it and buy a N7
I'll definitely be going after the Nexus tab... Worth it for the "Nexus" part at the least... Going to roll the fire back to stock and give it to a relative...
I preordered because I know the development is gonna be super alive. I'm keeping my kfire cuz it was cheap but the N7 is everything I wish the kfire was. I love what the kfire has become but I need bluetooth, I've learned to live without it but its something I've had a hard tine letting go.
I have 4 otg cables and multiple usb drives and bluetooth adapters. I'm dedicated, but still miss certain features lol

I love the KF especially due to all the hard work hascode and everyone else have put into getting ICS to work, but I pre-ordered the N7 as soon as I could. The N7 is closer to what I want in a tab. I'm going to let the kids use the KF for a gaming platform and I'll continue to flash the latest and greatest builds on it.
im not switching because im way too caught up in porting JellyBean.... Maybe sometime later i will CONSIDER the Nexus 7
sod it i'm having both (if i can install new motherboard on bricked one)
the kindle is a great device for tinkering/learning but that N7 look's super

If I could get a good price for my Fire, I would sell it, but some "dealer" is flooding CL with $75-80 Kindle Fire's, so there is no chance of getting a good price for it.
So if I'm going to buy a tablet outright again, it has to have everything I want...which means MicroSD/SD slot. No more compromises for me.
I am saving up for a surface pro. Kindle fire is my really portable tablet that does everything I need it to, I can't play prime on N7 and I don't own any google music. It's all on Amazon. I am not a fan of any particular corporation. I go with my needs and my need not to waste money. Kindle was the right prize last November and I didn't have a tablet. N7 is the right prize now but not the right time, I already have a table that does what I want. My next tablet will hopefully replace my aging laptop. (I hope!).
Not right now for me. KF does everything I need/want. I COULD use a FFC but I have my Rezound, laptop, and desktop for that so there's really no point. I'll put it this way: When a $199 tablet comes out with everything I want (N7 is missing removable storage), then I'll upgrade. As it stands, the N7 isn't a big enough leap forward.

Fire 7 / HD 8 Refresh [Spring 2017] - No HDX Replacement in Sight

https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/17/...let-refresh-release-date-pricing-kids-edition
It seems as though Amazon has decided to bow out of the "higher end" market, which is a shame. They've decided instead to stick with the lower price, high volume market to get more people into their ecosystem. At the time that the HDX first came out, it was actually relatively inexpensive for a tablet with its specs. It's one of the reasons that I bought it in the first place. If they had built it with micro SD storage, it would have been darn near perfect. I guess I'll just have to hold onto my old HDX 7 until it rolls over and dies.
I think Android tablet market as a whole is dead. Amazon just interest to sell ecosystem.

Well, that shows how little attention I've paid to the tablet market. The last time I really paid any attention was over 3 years ago when I purchased my HDX 7.
Honestly I actually pre-ordered the new Fire HD 8, because my second tablet: the Nexus 7 2013 is somehow stuck in a unfixable bootloop (it sucks but I did make a recent backup) I didn't want to be stuck with one tablet again, so I thought that the 2017 Fire HD 8's specs was as close as possible (on paper) for the same price I paid for my HDX 7. So I'll definitely tell you guys my verdict in about a week of everyday use.

I think the likely verdict is understood by those familiar with both devices. They do not play in the same space aside from vendor, approximate screen size and base operating system (Android derivatives). Beyond that night and day.
