This issue is being covered extensively on different threads already. You might want to use the search function bro.

Bro people here have been taking about banding on whole UI. but i am getting it only on lockscreen and only in black colour. same wallpaper when applied to homescreen gives deep black.
and banding in terms the place where i have black colour is shows as grey and black colour lines.
i think it's stemming from the same issue even if it only manifests on your lockscreen.
Are u using Go locker?

Yes, I get this.
It depends which image browser I use to set the lock screen, I think. I am sure this is the same issue as reported elsewhere. It is to do with rendering a 24 bit image as 16 bit.
It also goes away when I use Screen Adjuster to set the contrast to -40.

I think I have a problem with my phone, but not too sure if it's normal. I got my phone last Friday. Whenever the screen's on a grey or white background I get discoloured faint thick lines going down it. It is like a hologram.
Just wondering if anyone has the same and how are your display's like
Thanks
your screen is defective, or your gray page isn't actually solid gray. go into a drawing app and make a solid black or white or gray page and confirm it's actually the screen and not the apps you're using.
there's no burn in on amoled. only defective screens

You can also test your display dialing the code *#0*# and checking the 3 solid color screens (red, green, blue).

As far as i know Amoled suffers in burn in. My friend's S1 and my S2 has it. Noticeable especially in low brightness. When backgrounds are gradient of black to gray, the screen looks dirty on low brightness. I saw an S3 on Samsung shop had a very visible burn in of a clock widget even on max brightness.

Due to the different aging characteristics of the individual subpixels you will get a burn-in like screen after a while, especially where content is frequently shown. Like the clock in the notification bar. After a while/few months that spot will be seen when watching a solid colored background for example. Is the case on EVERY amoled screen there is.
Thanks for the replies.
I have tested it using a lcd test app and it is noticeable on a solid grey or white background. It's patches of faded pixels.
Was wondering if anyone with a S4 has the same problem and where would I stand with getting it replaced.
I can understand that amoleds suffer from screen burnin after sometime but not when it's brand new. My old s3 is perfect and I've had that for nearly a year.
Thanks
IMHO get it replaced.
My S4 also does this. Black and white are very good, but grey isn't very good. Check te picture below. I have also added the picture I tested it with.
Should I return it?

i wouldnt put up with that. I had the same thing on my first s4, had it for an hour and said im not living with that, took it back to att and got a new one. now its perfect!
swap that out
I've noticed whenever the keyboard is toggled on or off the greys change their hue.
It's subtle but most noticeable when on low brightness and in a fairly dim room.
I noticed it the most in the Playstore when you click the search bar at the top it brings up a list of resent searches, now hit the back button to make the keyboard disappear and the whole screen changes hue, click search bar again and it changes back when keyboard reappears.
Can someone else please test this?
I'm just trying to work out if my screen is defective or if it is an 'issue' with all S4s.
Thank you
Yeah, mine changes hue a little as well. Strangely I had my screens changed four times but this is the first time I noticed it.

Thank you for checking. It is actually quite noticeable when you're in a dark room, it's really bugging me!
This is my third handset, the first had a serious pink tint on the bottom of the screen and the second had a light horizontal band across screen when viewing white or grey images.
This one also has 'banding' on light coloured or grey images but not half as bad as my second!
I have the banding issue too! But my problem was mostly dead pixels and stuff. My current set has one tiny spec of dust under the screen but they told me I couldn't change it anymore.
It's a shame that you just can't seem to get a perfect AMOLED screen. There's always something

Hi,
Just got my i9505 and noticed some banding on one third of the screen (top). Specially in low light environment and with a white/light gray backround. A pure white image shows like a gradient.
Is this normal? Should I ask for an exchange?
Edit: Uploaded photo
While I don't have that phone I would say that it's not normal. Take it in.

Are you having this issue? Purple smearing? All the S4s have this issue.

Yes I had read that issue, have it too. Didn't know about the update though.
The main problem is this kind of gradient I have in the amoled screen. It's slightly perceptible but once you see it, can't stop looking at it.

Definitely not normal. Some devices do have that gradient with gray backgrounds (including mine), but it's much less noticeable than yours.
Take it back!
Anyone else experiencing this??? It looks weird almost like it's a lag or something but it's not. It's like a legit pinkish type tint when scrolling. Am I gonna have to return my device ALREADY?!?! I literally just bought it 4 hrs ago -___-
EDIT: OK so I'm informed this is called "smearing" and that's the perfect word to describe it. Only happens in the settings, looks like the words are lagging behind my scroll and catch up lol. Is there a work around for it or something? Even though there shouldn't have to be but that'd be nice i I didn't hafta go through the process again of getting a new phone a day after I got this lol.
If you mean in the settings, that's normal. That's screen smearing/ghosting. Explanation is in this video here http://youtu.be/C_APG3kLiYs around 13:30.
The pink tint issue is another thing.

Yes, it only appears in the settings that it "smears" as you call it, yeah actually smearing is a way better word to describe it, not a different tint. Is it on every S4 that this is happening, or is it a defect in only a small % of S4's? And is there a workaround for it?
Also, what is the "pink tint issue"?
Thanks!

It's the software. I've heard of the pink tint but haven't read up on it. I heard the smashing affect is cleared up on the new update we might get but that could just be talk.

Yes. Every S4. There is a work around. But it takes away from the screen by messing with the gamma. The pink tint issue is when part of your screen is darker than the other. Like my S4 is dark at the bottom and gets lighter as it goes up like a gradient. Like this picture http://i.imgur.com/9jhVEnr.jpg or this http://i.imgur.com/DhryGwg.png
It's more noticeable on grey screens.

Actually now that I see it. I notice it on every settings menu with a dark interface. Doesn't happen on lighter screens, only the black screens really.

The smearing will only happen in dark settings yes. It has to do with unused pixels. Like the video I posted before explains. If you don't have a pink gradient issue then you're all good. If it does I'd get it exchanged asap before you're stuck with it like me.

Look at a solid dark grey background. If its darker on one side that's bad. I noticed mine when I was texting everytime I pulled the keyboard up the text bubbles changed colors a bit.
I just noticed horizontal screen banding on the top portion of the screen.
best recogniced in stock background pictures.
also, in phone dial screen and music app, settings, there's very noticable banding right under the blue separating line.
anyone else have this problem?

Yes, I'm having the same issues when I see it on a grey screen. I'm going to end up bringing mine back and try another one. The first one had no banding but it had white lines going through the panel as you were looking at a grey screen. Hopefully I get one that has no issues.
No banding here, post better reproduction steps to get better feedback

The way I do it is that I download a light to dark grey picture and look at it in the gallery and make it full screen and I can see a different shade of grey line going across the phone.

Also wanted to know if this happens with my issues can it be a software issue to where its not telling the screen the correct color that it should be or is it just a bad panel?

I've noticed banding on mine as well using Lagom test screens. Took some pictures with comparisons to other screens.
well, i went back to the store and exchanged my g2 more than 5 times
all had bandings
i'm pretty sure they hate me there now lol
i guess i'll have to learn to live with it
sigh
I'm getting my LG G2 in a few days so it's this issue just how the phones screen is or is it something to return the phone if mine has it too
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
i mean, you won't notice any bandings if you don't look really close enough
I have very, very sensitive eyes
Banding? Do you mean the little dots in rolls and columns all over the screen? It it's that then that normal.
I went to the lagom link posted above and saw none of the banding or apparent moire pattern of the screens posted above. However, on a white bacground i notice a very subtle banding of discoloration going across the screen horizontally in portrait orientation. It's subtle and a non-issue to me but I guess this might be what the OP is referring to.

Just to note, the moire is an effect from the camera not the screen.
Thanks for clearing that up. No pun intended. I went to that link again and tried to notice the banding to no avail.

Stupid question, but in the dial screen, could you be mistaking it for the drop shadow of the tabbed navigation bar? I know I did at first. There's a strange amount of separation between the tabs' bar and a very thin drop shadow. Pretty strange graphic design if you ask me.
I dont think so. I do know that there is a shadow right under the blue line.
If you look at the screen close up at night, you will notice some bandings. It is too much and sudden colr shift to be a shadow.
