Hey Everyone,
I apologise if this is in the wrong forum (not sure if it should be in Android Development), and before I start I want to make it clear that I DID use the search function, I searched for "Can't Enable USB Mass Storage" and "No option to mount SD Card" with no relevant results.
Rom: JFv1.51 CRB43-EU
Ok, I was using my phone fine I managed to sync around 12GB worth of music and transfer a few files last night (I flashed the ROM around 20:00 GMT after trying out several hero builds).
This morning I mounted the SD Card to my laptop (OS is Windows 7 RC1) and transferred a few APK's. Suddenly as I was in the market the phone comes up with "Checking SD Card for Errors" and had for some reason unmounted itself from the PC.
Now when I plug in the USB cable all I get is the light to indicate it's charging. There's no option to mount the SD Card. I've tried it on my Laptop, My Vista Desktop AND My Xbox 360 (usually there's a mount option when you connect to that which allows the xbox to see music on the phone).
Strangest thing is the MicroSD Card seems fine, I am able to play my music and see the 2 pictures I have stored on it. Another site suggested using Anycut to make a shortcut to SD CArd and then ticking Enable USB Mass Storage. This doesn't work either, I get a ! in a triangle in the status bar saying USB Mass Storage Enabled but neither my laptop or my desktop will pick it up.
Any Suggestions?
Thanks,
Steve.

Yep, Should it be?
Yes it should be. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers (USB mass storage devices)
Edit: Double pOst
Okay so first of all, i am very happy with my galaxy s4. i used to have galaxy s (very first one) and the galaxy s3 for a month but returned due to random reboot issues. anyways, what bugs me the most is the lack of USB Mass Storage Mode. I know MTP has some benefits, that for example you can listen to your music on the phone while you mess around on the file system through MTP. But still, the disadvantages are worse in my opinion.
so first of all, copying to my s4 with mtp is slower than copying to my s1 with ums.
whenever i try to copy a video file, windows always asks me if i really want to do that because my device won't be able to play it (wtf?)
and some other minor quirks but still, enough for me to want to go back to ums
So things I tried (of course my devide is rooted):
SGS3 easy UMS, didn't work
sadly, su, setprop persist.sys.usb.config mass_storage, reboot didnt work either
so any other ideas would be very helpful

if you go into the app store there is usb mode switches which allow you to do exactly what your talking about, your phone needs to be rooted but that is not a problem as you said ur is rooted, just type in usb in the search bar as there are literally hundreds, i have not tried these yet because i have not yet rooted my S4 as am not sure which is suitable for my version, hope this helps a little maybe ?

I have tested all of the USB Mass Storage programs from the Play Store. But none of them actually works.
I can get it to mount the microSD card though, but it's not possible with the internal memory atm.

really, that's a pain, have you tried the sgs3 easy ums apk. link below or is it the same thing, i always had usb mode enabled on my s3 but actually never really noticed about it only been for the micro sd and not for the internal storage.
this is what i used on my s3 but it is ok for other samsung models as well
http://tutznet.com/81-enable-mass-storage-mode-samsung-galaxy-s3/.
P.S, unrelated question. your s4 when you bought it,was it locked to a specific network? i mean like the firmware? do you have custom rom or new firmware on it? are you usa or uk or from other country, i am on "three" uk network, and am wanting to root and custom firmware but could do with advice about which roms can go on to a firmware specific phone.
*UPDATE*
I JUST READ ON ANOTHER FORUM THAT THIS DOES EXACTLY THE SAME THING only mounts the sd card not the internal storage, Sorry

The reason why the internal memory doesn't gets mounted is probably because the internal memory is located at /storage/emulated/0 or /storage/emulated/legacy now. And this is not the same location as it have been on the Galaxy Note / Note II and Galaxy S III.
So someone have to make a new USB mount program that mounts that location.
as I wrote in my first posting SGS3 easy UMS doesnt work at all for me. Not even the external Micro SD. Am I doing something wrong? External would be a big help. Internal I can do without it
I hope this gets sorted out because it's really annoying to click OK for warnings and wait a lot longer with MTP.
MTP is sux and SLOW ! , it changed file created date , I can't see Linux hidden files (names start with "point")
, at least External SD card should be with an option to use as USB Mass Storage !.
I rooted my phone just for this option, and even root didn't help
I have tried SGS3_Easy_UMS_v1.2beta2.apk and it doen't work well (PC can see disk , but not what inside disk)
All I can do is to remove external SD card and connect to card reader, but it's annoying !
also have tried some apk, nothing works...(I have I9500)
so i guess no news reagarding usb mass storage mode?

CyanogenMod 10.1?
With my SGS2 I used the program Android Commander on my pc to access the root files of my phone.
Somehow Android Commander doesn't recognize my rooted S4.
I am looking for a way to connect my rooted S4 to my pc and access the root files. Would anyone know how to do this?
Just plugged in a 32gb usb drive - it found it immediately on WanamLite rom and automatically opened My Files app. Never did try on stock rom, tho...

This is also what I was planning to post.
You can find more info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297888
I have used it and it works flawless
Just wanted to confirm about S4 thay you can't plug in to USB and have the storage displayed. my s3 shows options to access phone and card when ive connected to pc but missus's s4 just shows the name of the phone and comes up with an error message. drivers aren't installing for it either so there may be other issues
cheers

Install that. Then install busybox from the market. Then open BusyBox, click the install button within the app, now plug your phone in, go back to the UMS enabler and choose USB Mass Storage. Your micro sd card will now work.

It is simple, you go to the USB icon in the status bar, and select Camer (PTP), it automatically unselects MTP modus.
Now your S4 acts as a storage, you can access phone and SD card from the PC
Edit: I was too quick, I can see folders but not all files.... sorry, just got my S4 today
Hello,
I need to get the internal memory on my Note mounted as a USB storage device on my machine but have failed. I have tried various apps from Play and everything I can think of. Has anyone managed this with the Note 10.1? I hate MTP and PTP doenst work great IMHO.
Thanks for any help.

The only option to get UMS to work is to go asop based rom.
With stock roms , there needs to be a kernel that should support it and there is no kernel that does it yet.

I suspect the goal is to connect the device with a drive letter, since some windows apps aren't able to access the device through the MTP connetion. Example being keepass synchronization won't work over an MTP connection.
Note doesn`t support mass storage mode. Tested with app wich can change usb connection mode
I need custom ROM with these features:
- BASED ON ORIGINAL TOUCHWIZ from Samsung (I need original drivers because I use SCREEN MIRRORING, DLNA etc. so CYANOGENMOD not working)
- with implement ROOT access
- system shoul be able read NTFS or exFAT file system on SD CARD ( I need to save large file more than 4GB)
- I need to save for example via atorrent aplication directly to SD CARD so I need permission for writing to external card ( because from KITKAT 4.4.2 it is not possible)
- when I plug in usb to pc I want to have option: USB storage mode for SD card ( i know USB mass storage enabler but not working on my root device with instaled BUSYBOX so I need implement solution in system)
is on this world this type of ROM for GALAXY S4 I9505 (android 4.4.2 or newer ) or Do I want so much???
I dont need no more than this features of ROM because google makes life harder with every change of system
pls and thanks

is there working usb mass storage option ???
USB mass storage option is missing in all Samsung android smartphones running android 4.0 ICS or later. In these smartphones we have only one option and that is MTP. MTP stands for Media Transfer Protocol and works similarly like USB mass storage but it can't compete with it because the data migration speed is very slow.
But there is an other trick by which you can enable USB mass storage mode on Samsung galaxy S4 by using an app called SG USB Mass Storage Enabler. This app is specially designed for Samsung galaxy series to enable their mass storage mode.
So no later versions have it, but you can always go with a fast sd card.
