[Q] Is gfree visionary? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just read a thread about eMMC chips and I'm nervous now. Apparently I have the bad M4g 2.10 GiB chip. It was said that this chip can die with gfree root, causing bricked phones. I'm kind of confused as to what method I used though. (yes I know, I'm kind of nooby ) I reviewed what I did using the wiki http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Glacier
I used visionary. In the wiki sections it shows two methods. Root.sh and gfree. Now I've check threads for both and some for both required visionary. I'm pretty sure I used gfree, but that only gave me s-off. Not root.
I've searched a lot of this stuff but im pretty confused. People are saying you dont have to be rooted or anything for your phone to get bricked from the bad eMMC. Its just a hardware problem. People are also saying the "good" chip can also die like the "bad" one. And then some people say its only if you have the bad one AND you've rooted using gfree.
Thnx for the info

Gfree and visionary are 2 different root methods. In my opinion bad ships dying because of rooting is a myth to me. I've rooted 5 mt4g with bad ships and they all still running great, well except my girls mt4g. That one I ran over with my car lol. Reason for ships dying, I believe is user error. So read, read and read some more, comprehand what you're doing then do it and take your time doing it and you should be OK.
I've used visionary root.she method to root all the mt4g I've rooted.

for the sake of safety though, I believe in it, as I am 15, and don't have the money to replace it myself lol. So are there 3 methods? root.sh, visionary AND gfree? root.sh wouldn't work because of my chip. It stayed s-on no matter what. so I did gfree to s-off and then visionary to root apparently. I'm not sure
And Im hoping theres a case of this happening with unrooted phones. That way I can blame t-mobile for bad hardware, but I'm probably gonna have to change my boot animation and splash screen back to stock if i want it took look real.

That's not really true. After you've temp rooted via Visionary, you run the root.sh script, and then use Visionary again to perm root. Selecting "perm root" in Visionary is the last step which completes the rooting process.

"Visionary method" and "root.sh method" are referring to the same thing. That method uses both the script and the app to perm root the device.

OK i used this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996. Is this gfree or root.sh since it uses visionary?
When I tried root.sh myself manually my phone stayed s-on. So I'm assuming this is gfree cause it worked.

Yes, obviously, if you had to execute "gfree something" - it's gfree.

That's definitely gfree. I used the 2 steps below to root all the devices I've rooted. All within the device, no PC needed. It took me about 10 to 15 minutes the first time doing it.
STEP 1
http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/10/how-to-temporarily-root-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-htc-glacier/
STEP 2
http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/10/ho...s-off-on-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-htc-glacier/

I believe the current consensus is that it doesn't matter which method you use to root. It has more to do with the amount of flashing you do. The "bad" chip seems to fail more often. How many it can handle varies wildly between phones. The "good"chip has been known to fail, though rarely. Bottom line is that flashing is a risk, but the reward is often worth it. Are you feeling lucky?

Rooting help! Did I root?

See post #30 PLEASE:
Quick questions:
1) on step 12. If this is the first time you have rooted your device you will need to run visionary again (temproot w/set system r/w after root checked and then attempt permroot) to make root privileges permanent and then reboot again. Now "su" should work properly for you.
I have the correct visionary installed...is step 12 a two-step deal? Is it "temp root with set system" and once that does it's thing, try permroot? It's rather confusing lol
2) when I hit "attemp permroot now" nothing happens...it just stays on the visionary screen
3) when I run visionary and do temp root...it says it's rooting, but then the screen goes black (but the top status bar remains showing my signal and battery) and it stays black. If I lock/unlock it comes back to the visionary screen...but only if I lock/unlock...what's going on here?
SEE POST #5
ok I think I'm rooted (I was able to download screenshot and take a screen shot, so I assume I'm rooted if what I'm reading is correct)...but when I hboot it says s=on...I thought I wanted s=off, and if so, how do I now get it into s=off?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
why not try this way...it was real easy for me...
Does the phone need to be plugged in for that method or no?
If you download the files directly from the phone, then no. It's easier connecting it to the computer, IMO.

Sounds like you have temp root on boot enabled in Visionary. You can use the guide provided for S-OFF and permaroot, or you can use this guide right here. Both are pretty good and easy guides.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
Before running Permaroot, make sure you have S-OFF. If you try permaroot with S-ON, you'll regret it forever.
I used the link that calimove provided and used the "Terminal Emulator Method" in the thread, and got me where I am.
I try using the "Alternative Root Process" but can't get the "Open command window here" to show up when I do step 1A
If you truly want your phone rooted with real s-off follow this method step by step, this is how I did it to my phone, if you need help PM me and I will give you my cell and take you through it step by step. it looks scary at first but really it isn't

I agree also with the post above that's the guide you need if you want true root.

Ok so I'm on step 12 " If this is the first time you have rooted your device you will need to run visionary again (temproot w/set system r/w after root checked and then attempt permroot) to make root privileges permanent and then reboot again. Now "su" should work properly for you."
I got s-OFF and the correct bootloader version (according to the hboot)...so now waiting.
One thing I noticed was different, when I did it earlier (and the guy above said I had a temp root) I had only one screen to work with (I couldn't scroll to other 4 screens we have when the phones new out the box). Now, with this "TRUE PermaRoot and the ULTIMATE S=Off!!!" thread, I have my multiple screens back.
Since you have S-OFF now, just run visionary to do a temp root, and then do a perma root [Click allow when it asks you for Superuser permissions] and you'll be permarooted.

how do I do a perma root?
With Visionary. First temp root the phone, and then use the permanent root option below it and visionary will take care of the rest.
Again, be 100 percent sure that you have S-Off.

Hey bud if you did the method step by step than yes you have true root. when you get to the end and need to run Visionary one more time you need to select temp root and after you temp root select what the method says to select and then select "attempt perm root" and now my friend you should have TRUE 100% s-off root!
Ok thats probably where my problem is. When I open visionary I only have 4 options:
-root on boot
-"run visionary.sh after root" which is unchecked
-"set system r/w after root" which is unchecked
-root now
So what am I missing? Ive always been clicking "root now" everytime.
And I just hbooted and yes I have s-off.
I have never seen anything that's said "attempt perm root" at any point

[Q] Trouble Rooting and geting "SU" permissions Mytouch 4g. HELP!

This may sound stupid, but does anyone know how to root specifically a RED mytouch 4g?? Maybe the color is intimidating or something, but I have successfully rooted 6 mytouch 4g's and not run into any problems.. I spent a week on this one to no avail. Its running 2.2.1, software number 1.17.531.2, build number 1.17.531.2 CL277036. Is there a manual way without using visionary? It wont grant me permissions even after temp root. Thanks.
try using the gfree method which is in the development section. It seems thats the only way to root the newer mytouches.
Update: Tried every single forum that appeared in the first 10 pages of google for 50 different search terms, and frankly, I'm ****ing beat.. I found a few similar topic forums, but only ONE exact build number, and everything with the SAME EXACT SYMPTOMS.. Is there really nobody out there that has tackled this debockle? I'm not sure what to do at this point, am I doomed?? I'm not a noob with this phone, but I'm not a developer or a programmer either. Anyone got any alternative root methods, other that the visionary, or flashboot methods for the exact specs on my phone??
I'm having the same issue with my red MT4G, had it since Feb. 11 Was able to root but not able to get the s-off same build and software as yours. Help Please!

Thats weird, I achieved s=off, using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
But I can't get superuser permissions to flash the older version of the bootloader, or use gfree. What did you use to root it?
Are these MT4Gs completely stock and out of the box? When I rooted a friend's device, VISIONary wouldn't even temproot at first. He later uninstalled some app and tried VISIONary again and temproot stuck, so maybe something else on the device is getting in the way? Either that or HTC incorporated some fix, we'd need more people with brand new MT4Gs to confirm.
gfree issues
I seem to be having the same issue but when I go to "chmod 777 gfree" I get the ./gfree: permission denied error

Temp root with visionary then try again. Make sure fastboot is disabled before doing it. If it doesn't temp root try an older version of visionary. I used a combo of gfree method and visionary to get root and s off

EDIT: i replied to this while half asleep so figured i would be a little more clear.
i had the gfree permission denied error you got. so temp rooted with visionary(latest) but just froze up my phone. tried a older version and it temp rooted fine. went in to ADB got SU and threw the chmod command at it again and it went through.
hope this helps, not 100% sure it went through because of what i did but its worth a shot.

I've tried stock out of the box, used it for a while, got s=off, and it stuck even after factory resetting the phone between trying various different methods.
I agree with you regarding a patch of some sort on the software though. I've found this issue on 2 red htc glaciers now.
And although It's new, and shipped with 2.2.1, a buddy of mine goes through them like candy, and I've rooted every single one of them, no problem. even when they started shipping with 2.2.1 it wasnt an issue. So I think it's the newer manufacture build number etc with the red ones..

I dont think It's working. I installed it, then reboot my phone, then ran the app, and At first It looked really REALLY unstable and kept flashing and doing weird things, so I rebooted again, ran it, and now it looks like it's not doing anything at all. How long did it take for your phone to say root successful, maybe I'm just being impatient.
thats what mine did. Just let it do its thing. If its to unstable to put in your commands use adb. I used adb from start to finish just cuz I find it easier.
Didn't take long. It did flash a black screen things like that. But just follow the guide you were using to a T and once you get temp root it shouldn't be a problem from there

I'm kicking myself in the face for not documenting my method I used. I finally did it, but in such a weird way, I'm not sure exactly WHAT it was. I installed visionary 11, uninstalled r14, uninstalled superuser, and ran r11. out of frustration, I scared up some old methods for rooting 2.2, and installed z4 root.. That made it to the second stage, but froze there. So I RE-installed visionary r14, achieved a temproot, and from there flashed gfree, etc.. and eventually stuck a permaroot with s=off.. I apologize for not figuring out exactly what I was doing wrong, or what I did right to solve the problem.

Does the Visionary root method still work?

My cousin wants me to root his myTouch 4G, i want to use the Visionary method, but all the videos i have seen on that method the comments say it doesnt work anymore. Does anyone know if it still does or not.
The "Visionary method" usually refers to the method using Visionary and the root.sh script, so you mean this one? If so, the only reason it wouldn't work is if you have the "bad" eMMC chip. In that case, only the Gfree method seems to work. Personally, I recommend the Visionary method as it flashes the engineering bootloader for you.

So on my girlfreindd my touch 4g I installed and ran invisonary r14 at first I checked temp root on startup and mount system and clicked temproot now.....the su Popped up but phone restarted before I can click allow. First off all : VISIONary.apk is a one click root tool but the security flags on our phones turn off the SU ability and remove root commands upon rebooting.
Second of all : you really didn't search this because every "root method" i've seen mentions using one of two different method to root our phones. Either ./gfree or root.sh. The search button works wonders
Third and final : I'm assuming since you gained SU access via VISIONary.apk you are still rocking 2.2.x. You can use the links in my signature for both methods. However i highly suggest you read the newcomers thread first.
Did you search, read before posting? If you are on gingerbread 2.3(which I'm pretty sure you are) you can't root with visionary.
If you're still on froyo 2.2, there's a lot of how to's here and on google.
EDIT:^^^^exactly what he said.

Well currently It is 2.2.1 (Froyo) but thank you neidlinger, I will try both of those, but can you guys tell me how safe this is? When I rooted my other phones it was easy and painless (samsung GS phones) But I never rooted an HTC phone so is there anyway these guides can break the phone permanently?

HTC phones are very easy to root, you just need to follow directions and obtain S-off. once Security is off, rooting and flashing is painless.

[Q] is this root real?

so...i finally got my phone rooted, i think. i used visionary after downgrading to 2.2.1, and i went into terminal, typed in su, and it gave me #. Just wondering, does this root stick? ie. if i start flashing, I'm not suddenly going to "lose root"...like is this as valid a root as using gfree?

if you only used the visionary app to root and not root.sh or gfree, then yes, you will lose root after a reboot. this kind of root is called a TEMP ROOT and that is all visionary.apk can give you if you haven't acquire S-Off with either the root.sh or gfree method.
I used the perm root, and i have rebooted it twice, and still have root... thats why I'm asking .
I would check s-on, or s-off, but I can't get into recovery (shows little red triangle). Should i flash an engineering boot loader if Im just going to flash CWM anyways?

visionary and root.sh are two different things.
visionary only gives you root access while the root.sh script is the one that actually gives you the S-Off so that you can perm root.
