Before upgrading to the next best top model? All I see coming in the next few years are phones with more cores, better camera, the only thing I would replace my Note with is probabaly with a bigger screen.
I'll be happy if it lasts me a good 18 months before I'm ready to bounce to the next best thing.
You best be kidding. Samsung will be looking to make you salivate and throw money at them for the Note 2 when it eventually arrives.
Mobile technology is moving too fast to get 5yrs out of a device - especially if you are driven to take advantage of new technologies. (Which probably is 100% of the XDA member base).
I expect in 10-16 months the next generation Note will be out there. Will it be a worthy upgrade? Probably.
Will it be a necessary upgrade? Probably not.
The average person probably goes from Gen 1 to Gen 3... Gen 3 to Gen 5, etc. I'm basing this on my circle of friends, anyway, iphone and ipad users.
I usually change my phone after 3 years, most of the time cause its not supported anymore, or cause the new OS isn't optimized (was on iphone and iOS 5 ask more power than the 3GS can provide). I'll see with the futur phone generation, one thing is sure, i cant go back to something <5,3"
Maybe a year...another 6 months if you're not very passionate about latest devices....

I always get a new phone every 12 months, 5 years? I can't imagine how awesome a phone I'm going to have in 5 years time :-D
5 years!?
5 months might be a better time frame given how fast phone tech is evolving.
What I don't understand is why people lock themselves to a device. I make sure I keep my phones in mint condition and when I want something new I trade or sell it on craigslist.

Mobile tech is evolving too fast. I mean, with 95% of the app being simple 2D graphics what will you do with a tegra3 quadcore, honestly ? So much power for nothing, as phones can already handle 1080p HD videos and stuff.
I see myself with the note for like 1 year. Until, something spectacular comes out.

The difference is, Note is made by Samsung, its very popular and successful device already. Mark my words, there will be a successor to Note. Most probably this year itself.
I can see myself using this device for a very long time, or until it breaks. The Note has a nice balance of power, screen estate, and most importantly, battery life.
Until they improve battery technology, I will not bother moving on the Tegra 3 devices, even if the Note 2 will be quad-core. There's simply no need for that. Google is always playing catchup with making the best of hardware so in all honesty even if you got a quad-core phone, you'd probably wait a good entire year before it becomes fully optimized. =)
I will never be able to spend 2 years with the same phone. Reason why I try to protect my Note as best as I can and when the time will come I will sell it and go for the next one like I did with my last SGS1.

Last Android update this phone is going to get is Adroid 4.0. Android 5.0 will be out in 3-4 months. Samsung is not in business to produce any software support for these phones, unlike Apple. After 6 months Note is not going to get any android updates, like first Galaxy Nexus.

As I posted earlier was thinking about selling my note. Well someone offered me $350 cash locally so I took them up and went to Sam's club and bought their last 16gb Google tablet to hold me over until the note 2 in a few months. So far its pretty cool.
I will still be checking here daily to keep up with development and see who is moving to the 2. Plus I've made some good international pals here as well.
anyway, thanks everyone from themers to chefs to developers to those who help and those I've helped, its been fun and ill see ya here and when the second version of the greatest phablet ever is released

I actually ask myself the same question. "Is that big purchase of the new device justified for a sake of some improvements (but not so overly dramatic)?".
I realise Note2 will come with 4 core processor, slightly bigger screen and perhaps Spen functionality ironed out and maybe better battery life. But how much all these improved features will affect my daily use. The more I think about it the less I'm convinced that I should switch...

None of the features that have leaked are worthy for NOTE users to switch. I mean sure from a Gnex or an S3... but the NOTE is still one of the most advanced smartphones out there.

Completely agree. I bought my Note 2-3 months ago, and sure i'd like to have Note 2, but lets be honest, throwing loads of money away just to get quad-core cpu ( which i probably won't even notice in my daily use ) is just...well...not very smart, unless you have a lot of cash you can spend for whatever you like, then i guess there's no discussion here. Will definitely buy Note 2, but probably in a year or so.

From the Note to Nexus 7
I wanted to get people's opinions about the Note II.
Do you guys like the phone?
What is the state of the roms do they have full functionality of the s-pen?
Do the roms have the ability to hot spot?
How difficult is this to root (i have rooted all my devices from the original evo to the 3d, and nexus 7, and etc) does this fall into the average difficulty or does it get odd (jubunto wire trick...)
Is the moding community active/healthy?
I know these are a lot of questions, but but my evo 3d is dying and I might have to etf my line loose my phone number in order to replace this(unless I want to rebuild my system two times once when I get my evo repaired and once when I can upgrade in April..) if I am going to do that I want to make a smart decision on a phone that can last me the full two year term on my contract.
Anyone that can and does help thanks in advance.

There is only ONE thing which can go wrong with this phone; since Samsung is not releasing the soruce code for Exynos chipset, developers are having hard time for making daily suitable ROMs and if Samsung suddenly decides to cut updates off after -say- 1 year than Note 2 starts to age rapidly because of the lack of the up-to-date ROMs. But if we look at the SGS2's past it seems like that is not the case. So, nothing to worry about I guess. .
You will not regret buying this phone! When you get used to the bigger screen, it is just too awesome!
To answer one of your questions, it is super simple to root. I believe you can find the program in the dev section
Best android phone so far for me. Had a lot of high ends but note2 was and is the best. Rooting is easy, dont need big knowledge just need to learn to use google or xda search and read a bit. Note 2 community isnt so big now but later it will increase, same as was for other phones, just need more time. If you are not smartphones geek, note 2 could last you even more than 2 years, it is fast, good hardware, nice software additions. You wont regret ;D

you won't regret it. It'll take about 1 day to get use to the phone size after that every other phone will feel too small and like a toy.
I wouldn't even say, "wait for CES". This phone is so capable and powerful it'll still be better than 95% of anything coming at CES. And will easly last you 2 years.
buy it. NOW
omega rom v9. 1 kalgas mixed theme
thought i might put my opinion for you
I have had HTC's for years
TYTN, TYTNII, Touch HD, Desire then Sensation XE
I was used to Rooting HTC's and was flashing roms pretty often trying to get the best battery and performance and when i saw a mate with a Note II i wanted one but was a bit worried with the rooting etc.
Now after using the Toolkit and making Backups of EFS and Nand etc and then rooting , and now just yesterday flashing the latest XXDLL4 rom its turned out to be pretty easy.
As regards to the phone even though it has a bigger screen the battery life is amazing compared to any HTC i have had (a friend has a HTC One X and he struggles to get a day even with light usage ) but i use the note for everything even playing a fair amount of games and youtube vids etc and so far i have not run low on battery before the end of the day .
the speed is superb it just does not feel laggy at all and it's great to actually have 2gb ram as i no longer have to worry about memory management at all.
At first the big screen was weird but after a day or so i could not go back to anything smaller, you just get used to it and then realise that the biiger screen just gives you so much (although i use nova launcher to take advantage of the space)
the Spen is a good feature but not one that i have used a great deal but when i want to write notes its much easier to use the pen rather than my finger.
if i had one issue it is with the size as its difficult to use onehanded but i'm getting used to that.
In conclusion its by far the best Phone i have owned and with all of the HTC phones i have owned i have always looked at the next phones due for release but with this one i cant say that i would look to replace it for quite a while.
Best phone on the market!

For the second consecutive month, the Samsung Galaxy Note II dominated in both the People's Choice Chart and Mobile Tech Expert's Chart in PhoneDog Media's Official Smartphone Rankings™. It went uncontested all month long, never straying from the #1 position. For the time being, the Samsung Galaxy Note II shows no signs of slowing down or surrendering its top spot in the charts.
For the month of December, the Samsung Galaxy Note II proved it was a force to be reckoned with. It held first place in the People's Choice Chart and Mobile Tech Expert's Chart for each week throughout the month.

Yes, you are going to love this phone.
Feel happy with the note 2, big screen, long battery time, fast cpu, 2gigs of ram(really really smooth), write instead of typing anymore, fully feeling its power using s note, floating things, its just the first smartphone that I feel it is really smart :victory:
I'm really close to buying the note 2. The only things stopping me is that the phone has been out for some months now, since September. And I'm a bit worried everyone is going to jump ship when the Sony Yuga (because of sources) and Galaxy S4 (because of hardware) come out.
Goddamnit, I can't decide.
Lol. The next big thing is always around the corner. You could be enjoying a note 2 right now and watch from the side lines comfortably for at least a year right now. I don't want to jump right in to A15 chip sets til they've matured a bit and see who utilizes it the best. I am pretty sure by September/October next year all the big phones will be out except perhaps the next nexus.

Hehe yea I know. It's just that the note 2 has been out for almost 4 months, and it's not like the price has dropped that much, here in denmark. And it seems that the exynos sources aren't coming out, which could add to the lifespan of the phone.
On the other hand, the note has a pen and a huge battery. Decisions, decisions.

Best phone ever
Hi all,
Being a new proud owner of an ACTUAL Nexus phone. I am trying to get a picture of what the future of this phone may be. Is there anyone who owns an older Nexus that is still getting OTA updates. Now, let me say that of course I know I can always root and rom untill the phone explodes, but what of OTA updates? Are we looking at a year maybe two of OTA's before this phone becomes un-supported? I am looking for historical information but I can't seem to find any article or post in regards. What is the experience of other past Nexus owners? Just some good conversation I thought. Thanks!

To give some perspective, the Nexus S was supported until 4.1.2, after shipping with 2.3 over 2 years ago. The Galaxy Nexus is currently still supported and has been updated to 4.2.2 and will likely be updated to 5.0 along with the Nexus 4 in May after Google I/O. You can expect the Nexus 4 to be supported until early 2015 or so.
Even if we lose support, we have an amazing dev team. So just sit back and relax.
This is something I also took into consideration when I purchased this device. If you ask me, we are getting plenty of Bang-for-our-Buck. A great processor, a good-size screen, good amount of RAM, Google-direct updates, and a great Dev Community, The last two, in-particular, are the main reason why the Nexus 4 will have longevity over say the Galaxy S3 or even (I think) the Galaxy S4. While Google was behind on the initial demand of the product, I do not believe they will fall behind on the software this phone. I don't know how the Galaxy Nexus was received at launch but this thing flew off the shelves and was talked about ALL over the internet. I don't think Google is done with this phone just yet. I hope for 2-3 (maybe even 4) years of active Android updates.

Yeah I hope so too. Although 4 years may be a little stretch lol. I like this phone too. I honestly think if the Nexus 5 has a 5" screen I won't want it. This phone is hard to use with one hand at times when I need to stretch out to reach that back button. It's a good size. Nice screen, and solid fast hardware too. Just get a nice case for it...

I think the support will last longer and longer for Nexus devices as they are more capable. Obviously a single core Nexus 1 had a limited future with the speed of development of Android. I think with a quad core phone like the Nexus 4, we could probably expect a fair bit of longevity with regards to OS updates.

I think one of the issues we're contending here is that with our processing power getting to the point where we're rivalling computers, how powerful are phones going to have to be to force our N4s into obsolescence? From a hardware standpoint, it's not as likely. And forced software obsolescence... that's a whole other problem
Even if we only get updates for two years, we typically get them 4 months before everyone else.

Well, it's not the charging speed that matters. It's the heat that's caused by the process of charging that damages the battery.
The faster your battery is charged, the hotter it will become. The higher the battery temperature, the faster it will deteriorate.
Just my two cents.
Correct me if I'm wrong but so far the reason Google gave for not stopping updates to their older devices was because they simply weren't powerful enough to handle the newer Android versions. Based on this, I feel our phone will continue to get updates for a minimum of 4 years. Let me explain.
Back then cramming great hardware into phones was still at a very nascent stage. High tech phones were pretty new, and equally unheard of. The focus was mainly on Software, and lesser on hardware. But that's not the case today. Today most companies are embroiled into a "hardware race", something like we the "megapixel race" we have seen. And I think (after doing a bit of research) the hardware race as peaked. Software is what is going to attract the customers now. Hardware gimmicks will soon stop. Today phones are more powerful than PCs which are a few years old. Android versions, along with most apps, don't even make full use of 4 cores. We never really even come close to utilising the full 2 GB of RAM. 720p is a resolution high enough for any device. The only place where we lag is the GPU, but even that's pretty decent. I doubt any Android version will REQUIRE more than 4 cores anytime soon. Android is a platform for all types of phones. High end as well as low end. If the minimum requirement is 8 cores, they won't be able to sell low end phones anymore. Which pretty much halves their market. And I doubt they want that.
However now we have reached a point where hardware is far superior to the software that operates on it. One example I can give you is the difference between the Samsung Galaxy s1, s2, s3, s4. The difference between each successor and predecessor is huge. The smallest gap witnessed is between the s3 and the s4. The main selling point of Samsung is in the s4 is the software, not the hardware, as (largely) was the case in the previous versions.
Also, Google doesn't make much money from the selling of phones. It's main source of revenue is from the software that runs inside our phones. I only see two reasons for Google to stop providing updates for our phones :
1 - It might get too tedious to provide the updates for a large number of devices.
2 - They might want people to shift to Motorola.
Again, this is just what I think. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Hey guys,
I am thinking about getting a Nexus 4 to replace my HTC Sensation. The Sensation has many problems such as huge battery drain and it gets extremely hot during usage. So I thought the Nexus 4 would be a great idea. Pure Android (huge fan of that, was using CM for a long time on my Senny) and Google Support sound good and the price seems to be okay to (I could buy a 16GB variant for about 310€).
Is this phone great? Is it still worth buying considering it's already nearly a year old? Does it have some know problems such as huge battery drain or display problems?
I need this phone for browsing, using the calendar, writing emails/sms and sometimes taking photos. I don't play any games on it except 4 pictures 1 word.
Thanks in advance!
I too came from a Sensation, and it's a fine upgrade, for all the reasons you mention. Perhaps not as durable as HTC's build quality, so be sure to include a decent cover (I use the Diztronic TPU and it looks factory) to protect that beautiful glass. It's a joy to use..you can't go wrong. Cheers!

Honestly, if that is all you use your phone for, you should get the Lumia 1020. But if you want to stay with Android and can wait 4 more months, the 5th Nexus will be out then and should the price be as low as the Nexus4, then it would be better to get that.

The Lumia 1020 would be out of the price range. I'd never pay 400€+ for a phone I only use for work. I probably can't wait till the next release because the Senny really bugs me. I can't use a phone which burns in my hand because it's getting extremely hot while chewing through battery like nothing. My Sensation barely gets through the day with moderate use.

I can't sincerely tell someone to purchase a 7 month old device when knowing a faster device will come for the same price in due time.
Well you can go on buying Nexus 4, everything is a beauty when you compare prices and then it is a google phone so it always have it perks.
If you think you should wait for nexus 5 then its not very much pretty soon bcz this time google launched s4 and htc one as google variant which means next nexus will take time.
Your tasks which u need to perform as you have mentioned would all be performed very well.
Tip I can give even for better battery.
Unlock the bootloader, use custom recovery such as CWM and flash CM 10.1 stable releases which ever is latest.
Find franco kernel and flash that and for better colours use its colour profile.
You will have an outstanding experiance with great display and great battery time.
Best of luck.

People will and should buy the device that suits their needs and the price they are willing to pay.
If you want a unlocked / contract free phone the device is a good choice
The entire motion that a new device will be out in a couple months is pointless. He wants a phone now. A couple months is just that. A couple months living with a phone he doesn't want. Then when the next nexus device comes out there will be the next best thing on the horizon.
He a is a basic user that doesn't participate in the stupid I need the lastest and greatest hw spec race.
Sitting around waiting for 4 plus months for a device is just stupid.
Why buy a HTC one now? The plus version is coming? Why by a s4 now? The advanced or whatever version with the 800 is coming in a couple of months.

To each their own, I cannot speak for the needs of TC nor their personal interests. Whether he's comfortable with waiting X months is currently unknown and has not been divulged in this topic, so we can agree to disagree.
He said he probably can't wait for the next release because his phone bugs him.
Even a device like the HTC first would suit him fine hardware and software wise. Not unlocked and cheap of course ( don't even think it launched outside the US or unlocked) but just talking the device itself
There are plenty of users who are not concerned with the I can read the spec sheet pissing matches. Wait for the latest and greatest chip so they can have a higher score in benchmarks etc.
Its definitely still worth buying full price. Its a great device especially if you're a fan of stock android like you said.
Happy phoning.
I really don't need high specs. Benchmarks never intersted me because at the end you probably won't feel any difference between for example the snapdragon 600 and the snapdragon 800 in everyday use. I just want the phone to work well without stuttering and without any hick ups.

If you need a phone now, just go for it. If you are not in a hurry, you can wait and see what comes up. IMO I usually don't want the first batch of the phone anyway since they are usually the ones with problems.
just buy it
I highly recommend nexus 4.. Believe me it's as smooth as HTC one out even better..
Root and flash cyanogenmod and Franco kernel... That made me a delighted user from a happy user...
Besides it'll have developer support for hell lot of a time to come... Even after people forget about HTC one and s4..
:good::good:
I'm going to buy it at the end of August and I think it is still worth it. However reading this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2259334 scaried me!
I am confused, I had a galaxy note 2 for few months but i recently lost it I am currently using a non smartphone and I know that lots of new phone will be announced next week at IFA berlin 2013 but am not willing to spend a lot on a phone after losing my note 2.
Nexus 4 prices are gone down to clear out the stock for nexus 5 but am not sure if it will be as cheap as nexus 4 was when it first launched. what do you suggest, should i wait till nexus 5 is announced and see if its worth it or get a nexus 4 now?
I also wanted to know if the battery life is good enough to last me a whole day since my note 2 had 3100mah compared to nexus 4 2000mah?
thanks in advance
The battery is good, atleast for me, I can easly get 1 day out of it.
Hmm well PERSONALLY I would buy the N4. But that's because I can't wait when buying something new and because I think that the N4 is already so smooth that you don't some more cores/ghz etc like the N5, because how much faster can it get? The heaviest games are already smooth so...
Maybe only a camera improvement would be nice.
Eitherway it's up to you, these are just my 2 cents.

Nexus 4 is indeed an amazing phone with the best pure android experience.
Of course all top branded high end androids will have support community for custom Roms and latest android features.
If you want some more customized UI like touchwiz or sense you can try something else.
But take into consideration that Nexus 4 is a value for money device with high performance which leaves most users satisfied.
It also has a unique design , a nice manufacturer and support both LG and Google.
I would recommend you to give it a try.
( another option for me is Moto X . very nice looks , customizable case , nice features etc. )
Just to reiterate what the other's have said, it's a brilliant value for money device, and recently in the UK at least there has been a 33% price drop from £239 to £159 which is absolutely crazy for a device of this spec. That's like a quarter of the price of the S4 which experiences more lag than the Nexus 4 if kept on touchwiz.
If you're one of those people who gets bored of the phone quite quickly, wait for the N5, I'm sure the price point will be just as good.
Nexus 5 isnt out yet and look at those people coming with their answers to buy n4.
First of all op it would be wise to sit and wait for n5 to come out and compare it on the based reviews with n4.
Then and only then you can say which phone suits you best.
Seriously, you guys sick the **** out of me with your adoration towards n4.

I recently broke my Note 2 and bought a Nexus 4 to replace it, so I feel I should chime in.
1) The Nexus has horrible battery life compared to the Note 2. I wish it wasn't so, but I've recently even gotten a battery pack to recharge it on the go. It lasts maybe 50% as long, and this is with the most recent update (jwr66y). --- EDIT: OP asked if he could use it all day. For me, it's a maybe. With light usage, yes, but not if you use it like you could the Note 2.
2) Switching from the big screen to the small one has been a real challenge. I've caught myself looking at tablets a lot lately, and I never felt I needed one with the Note.
3) While pure android is nice, touchwiz is nice too. I consider them a toss up.
4) The Nexus 4 is a very nice device. It has good build quality, a nice screen, runs fast, and enabling LTE is easy (with T-Mo at least).
Bottom line, I'm seriously considering buying the Note 3 when it releases in the coming weeks, and keeping the Nexus as a backup. It's either that or getting a tablet, but I'd much rather continue to have 1 device.
might as well wait for the nexus 6, itll be even better than the 5 :silly:

It's different when there's maybe a 2 month wait vs. a 14 month wait. I'll be waiting for the 5.
Buy N4 and then sell it off resale value will ofc be good till N5 is released.

lol, i think you missed my point, it was an attempt at humor. thats why i included this guy--> :silly:
Well, I have a gnex and a nexus 4, and the nexus 4 is a massive improvement over the gnex, however I'm not sure a nexus 5 phone will be a massive leap over the nexus 4 unless klp is more resource heavy. My n4 is buttery smooth and I even considered buying another one just because there only 200$ now. Go for the nexus 4 and you can probably resell it in a year for 200-300$ still
