I have a TMOUS HD2 1024 from the US go live release (red reset button). I have been using various Android builds for a few weeks now and love the MDJ's CyanogenMod 7 v2.2 (11 JAN). My question is this:
If I use one of the builds made specifically for the 1024 ROM will I see better response times? I know they are compatable since I am already using a 512 but more importantly would there be any benefit using a ROM designed for the 1024?
If there is a differnece is there a way to modify this build so it takes advantage of the full 1024 ROM? I have seen discussion related to changing the size of some spicific files that modify storage sizes but am very novice to phone edits and quite cautious. Any help would be welcomed and if this has already been discussed a simple link would be most appriciated.
With 1024MB ROM, there are no advantages in terms of speed performance.
However, you do get space advantages.
If you flash a 350MB ROM, 350MB is being used by the system partition, a small amount is used by the boot partition and cache, then the rest are all userdata partition, which gives you around 500MB free space to install apps and store user data. (SMS, etc)
People with 512MB ROM, 350MB is being used by system partition, minus boot, cache, you have like around 50MB to 100MB left which isn't much for apps and user data. Which is why they need to use A2SD+ or DATA2EXT or similar methods of increasing userdata storage.
Try using Clockwork Recovery. You will have ALOT of free space. Even if you don't do A2SD+ partition, since MDJ's Gingerbread Cyanogen uses less than 150MB for system partition.

it would be usefull if you told us exactly which desire hd rom, how you are running it (daf, cwm, sd card), and whether you have an ext partition on your sd card. Oh, and which phone you have, regular or tmous.
Sense roms are big, they take up a big chunk of the nand, so it is almost always essential to use app2sd and/or data2sd. (read the thread for the rom you have to know which it supports)
More accurate info = more accurate help.
rubbish info = rubbish guesswork help.

Thanks for your reply...
here is my details..
ROM : LeoRCMix S v.1.5 (RCMixS v.2.0) [Sense 2.1+3.0]
Running using : CWM
Phone : HTC HD2
Im using : TMOUS
I know i have to use app2sd/data2sd.. but im not sure how to config it.. even i tried to do but im struck with boot screen..
ok, so it should only need a 200 meg system partition, so my guess would be that you haven't set up the 1gb ext partition? you can do that through cwm (backup your sd card first, it will get formatted) and
but im not sure how to config it

you dont have to. it does it itself so long as you have the ext partition properly created. I also think that if you DONT have the ext partition set up yet, you will probably need to reinstal the rom after you DO set it up.
So, summary, , , question 1 - do you have an ext partition set up?
(Also, and this causes a lot of confusion, , , when the system uses an ext partition, it DOES NOT show the extra space in the available memory count, but it does get used, , so for example my phone shows 210MB or so free internal space, , , i install a 10MB probgram, that goes down to 200, BUT after i reboot, it goes back up to 210, , because the prog has actually installed to my 512MB ext partition, not the 210 internal space.)

then you are wasting 200 meg, , that rom says in post 1
EU and TMOUS: 200M system + 1GB EXT partition

that means you have 200 meg empty in your system partition, not being used.
Stuff that you install do not get installed to the system partition, nothing (or at least not apps / settings) gets put into the system partition, except the system at installation.
Do a full cwm backup, reflash using a 200MB partition layout, reflash the rom to teh new layout, restore your data and sd-ext partitions from advanced restore (in cwm) and you will recover the 200MB

Thanks a lot... now i understood wht is system and data memory.. now i got 200mb internal memory.. thanks again
same problem
i have a nand of 4.1.2 in my hd2 its pacman
it shows system memory only 13mb, i have removed all apps i installed earlier but still no space freed, can i atleast get the same 150mb back which i had earlier i.e any way to wipe all data on it/hard reset it?
is there any way of expanding the memory? because after i have installed 10-15 apps the memory vanished(even though i moved the apps to sdcard using app2sd) does that means i can not install more apps any way??
p.s i am a new user of android dont know how to install new rom etc so please explain the solution in simple steps.
Hi, I am using MIUI with Android version 2.3.7. Everything is allright, but I only have 217 mb of internal memory in total. The MIUI ROM and other apss take up about 180 mb and although I have moved some apps to sd I now only have 40 mb available. It should have 512 mb internal memory. Why can't I see and use all of it? Is it possible that I didn't delete windows mobile or one of the other android roms I have used so far, though I am sure I have tried "clean install" a few times?
Dalvik cache & app data take up a lot of space too, you could move these to th SD ext partition to free up more internal memory. You will need a2sd installed I think to enable this.
Peace

the 'available internal memory' figure only counts the data partition size.
so (for example) if your rom requires a 200 meg system partition, you would show..
512 minus 200 minus whatever cache size you flashed minus the boot and recovery partitions (lets guess 50 meg) so your available internal memory on a completely fresh install, no data or apps, would still only show a max of 262meg available.
Also, if you flash a system partition bigger than required, you dont get the extra space to use. So flash a 180meg rom onto a 250 meg system partition, and you lose 70meg, the system wont use it for anything.

Thank you so much. My ROM itself is about 100 mb. How much data partition size should I actually spare for such a rom? Also could you please direct me to the post that tells me how to arrange the data partition size and do the rest of flashing my rom again? I would really like to have more available internal memory. Also I would be happy if you told me what ext 3 or ext 4, whatever it is called, is and if it has anything to do with internal memory.
If the rom is 100mb then you need a partion of at most 110 so if your using clk or magdlr..after you have wiped nand...partition it to 110 if possible or use 105 even cos you don't wanna be giving up wanted space..
Hello everyone! Yesterday, I tried to flash the new ICS CM9 and I did it. It is laggy and I can t install GAPPS.Then i saw that my system partition is 160 mb instead of 215 (recommended).
So, how can I change my system partition from 160 to 215 ? (I tried some TPT Gen2 tutorials, but nothing).
Thanks!

ok first go to market and download tpt helper.
then choose make your own tpt fill chache as 20 mb system(dont make it less it is recommended to use 20 mb on ics) as 210 mb(or as per ur choice but not less) and rest will be system.then click ok.
it will download the tpt and edit it accordingly.then check it it should have from the app there should be 10/12 matches.
then reboot.
press menu+power+vol up then green text fill flash and tpt will start on its own.
if there is a error at 99% down worry wait and then it will be success.
u r done.
just remember to have a rom on your sd.
there will be other options like choosing splash screen, recovery etc choose accordingly in the app.
u can even use your nandroids.
remember to delete image folder from sd after flash to prevent flashes by mistakes.
u r done enjoy
thanks saaransh9 i also want this info, voted up
sorry, but my number of matches is 1/1 .It is all right?

Hi to all, I am new at all this android stuff, so I hope you won't laught, but I have few questions.
1.Is there a way to change size of partitions without flashing new rom?
2.How big the partitions should be (System, Data, Cache) ?
According to "Blade Checker" I have European ZTE Blade 512MB, Gen2 phone, also it said that I have to use image.bin style TPTs.
Curent partitions are:
System 220MB
Data 160MB
Cache 37MB
It is running CM 7.1 stable mod and Clockwork Mod Recovery 5.0.2.0
Thanks in advance, and I am sorry if I posted at a wrong place.

1. No,you cannot.
2.Your partition size is more than enough for any new ROM's. Minimum System partition size varies accordings to different ROM's. Minimum data is according to your needs for app storage. Minimum cache is 20mb,but keep in mind you can't download anything from market/play over 20mb. So cache decides your temporary market storage.

Was thinking maybe to increase Data prtition or maybe install 4GB class 10 sd card I have and try to make EXT partition on it, 2GB I have now seems a bit slow for that.
Would one of thos things help?
Thanks.

A2SD gives u lots of space. I have a 4 gig SD card with a 1 gig partition and I've 300 apps installed
Here's how u do it
-backup ur SD card
-boot into recovery
-select advanced
-partition SD card
-select size. recommended 1gb
-select swap size as 0. Select 32 if u use it for gaming
-reboot
-install s2e
-check all four boxes
-reboot
-start installing apps

If you changed your partition sizes, your rom and all your data would be wiped. If you made a backup before, you could restore it afterwards as long as it could fit in the new sizes (eg. if your rom took up 160MB in system just now, and you changed system to 170MB then it would fit so you could restore it, same for other partitions).
Size for the partitions depends on what rom you are wanting to install. Some like Swedish Snow can fit in 128MB system, others like the ICS ones need ~180MB or bigger.
As your current layout is big enough for any rom out now, you'd be better making an ext partition on your phone and using that. S2E from Google Play works well with CM7 and lets you move most, if not everything, on the data partition to the ext partition. Its usually best just to move apps, but it means you can have loads of space. You can choose the size of ext partition depending on how big your sdcard is and how much space you need.

2MB is the minimum for cache. You can redirect the market downloads to data/ext partition/somewhere else, so you can download any app you like. Most roms do this automatically if your cache partition is small. By making it bigger than 2MB, you are either wasting the extra space if its still small enough to be redirected, or you are restricting the size of apps you can download if its too big to be redirected.

Well, I did few things.
I did what QuantumFoam suggested, partitioned my old 2GB card that was already in phone, created EXt partition of 512MB, to try if it work. I'we made backup on PC, but when I rebooted few of apps I had on sd desapeared, also all my music, pictures, wallpapers and other stuff.
Question I have now is should I copy all the things from PC back to SD and where.
Thanks all of you guys for helping me and having so much patience with me.

That's because ColdFusion didn't have the redirect script added yet. If you add that, then 2MB is fine for it as well.

I think creating the ext partition formats the whole card. If you plug your phone into your pc and turn on usb storage, you should see it appear with ~1.5GB space. You can copy all the stuff back onto there and it should work again. You might have to reinstall the apps that were moved to the sdcard, don't know if just copying them back will work.

I did that, reinstalled few apps and it works, thx.
Have one more question, if you all don't mind
I know that these questions sound stupid, but as I said, I'm new to all of this and have a strong will to learn.
Is it possible to switch this card with bigger one I have, without flashing ROM again?
If it is, I would apritiate If someone could point me to some guide, because I presume it is not easy task and I think I bothered you enought already.
If it isn't possible, can I then format new card on my PC,copy ROM on it, partition it from CM recovery and then install ROM and all of the apps?
Thx again

Android is using SWAP-Partitions like "internal RAM". It is not exactly the same as internal RAM, but very close to it.
So you can increase your internal ram by using a swap-Partition.
Swap-Partition is a separate Partition on SD-Card. Mostly the last partition on sd-card.
For example:
16gb - SDCard---> 1. Partition FAT32: 14 GB, 2. Partition: SD-EXT: 1,5 GB, 3. Partition: SWAP: 500 MB
If you have a swap-Partition on your sd-card AND Android is told that it should use SWAP (e.g. by using an init-d-script or playstore-app "SWAPPER") - Android will use the amount of memory on SWAP-Partition as internal RAM.
But it is not exactly like: 1GB Internal RAM + 500 MB SWAP = 1,5 GB Internal RAM - > that's not true.
If you activate SWAPPING you have to decide which value of "SWAPPINESS" you want to use.
Example:
Swappiness 30 means:
70 percent of all write-actions will be on internal ram and 30 percent of all write-actions will be on SWAP-Partition.
If you set Swappiness 100 means:
ALL write-Actions will be on SWAP-Partition --> Internal ram is nearly not used any more ("nearly" becaus some things in android are using internal ram further on).
But you have to be careful: You need a very fast Sd-Card.

Dalvik Cache is a List in which all apps and the path to find those apps on your phone are listed. With this list in Dalvik Cache, Android
is able to find and start Apps and other files faster than other Operating Systems would do.
You can erase Dalvik Cache, but on the next Restart of your phone - dalvik cache will be rebuilt automatically.
Cache is a partition into which all apps are writing different things when they are started and when they are running.
This data is only temporarily needed. There are some apps in playstore that are able to erase cache in order to speed up system a little bit.

It depends on how you are using your phone.
If there are many apps running in background that must run in background and stay there all the time (e.g. taskkillers, battery-monitoring, antivirus-software, whatsapp and so on) - very much of internal ram will be reserved for those apps.
As a result : For all other apps that are not staying in internal ram all the time (e.g. games, office-apps, and all the other stuff that can be downloaded from playstore) - there is much less internal ram available for.
This may end in lower performance of your phone generally.
In my case - i use a 300 mb swap-Partition and my phone is faster than without it.
But it depends on the speed of your SD-Card and the kind of swap-activation, Swappiness , readahead-value and so on if you want to make your phone faster by using swap.
Some people say, that zram-swapping is better than swapping with a swap-partition.
I can not say that too, my phone is slower with activated zram instead of activated swap-partition.
zram means, that a part of internal ram is reserved for a swap-partition instead of a swap-partition on sd-card.
So during the usage of zram you have less internal memory free for your apps again, BUT android will swap some system- apps to zram.
Sometimes this makes your phone a little bit snappier, but in my case ist slows down everything.
But SWAPPING BY swap-partion is worth a try.
