[Q] baseband question(s) - XPERIA X8 General

Hey guys,
would-be first time rooter here. Couple of questions. Sorry if they answered somewhere, could not find where. Basebands and kernels are not covered for dummies in any guide.
1. My phone is X8, E15i, baseband M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404006, kernel 2.6.29, build version 2.0.1.A.0.47, 2.1-update1. PC companion does not want to update it any further and since in every rooting guide is stated i need the last version, i am not sure what to do. Here is stated that the last version is 2.0.2.A.0.24. But nowhere it's said if I would have to have in installed already or the flashing process does it for me. So do I just download Baseband 006 - kernel 2.0.2.A.0.24 and use it with flashtool?
2. Is 015 better / newer version than 006? Lots of custom stuff requires 015. Lots of threads refer to 015 as to the latest baseband and from what I've read if I flash 015 over a 006 device I will brick it or infinite loop it. Does this mean I am stuck forever with the 006 and cannot use GingerDX for example?
General explanation of basebands / kernel stuff will be GREATLY appreciated.
thanks in advance.
don

You need xxx015 baseband to run custom ROMS correctly. Download the latest firmware, unpack it to firmwares folder inside Flashtool installation folder (default C:/flashtool). Flash it and you should get newest baseband. This will erase all your data so, make a backup of important stuff. Then use toolbox to root your phone and obtain recoveries. Then pick your favorite ROM, unlock bootloader (if you don't worry about warranty, but read guides in general and android development section to avoid hard brick) flash required kernel and have fun If you have problem with bootloops perform a full-wipe in recovery.
To enter xRecovery tap back button repeatedly on Sony Ericsson's logo.
To enter ClockworkMod tap the screen. On custom kernels tap back button.

[Q] how do I update my kernel

I recently flashed Gio's OTA Froyo 1.8.1 and once it had finished flashing, it noted to upgrade my kernel version.
I've flashed at least a hundred rom's onto my phone, but I've never updated or flashed a new kernel. I skimmed the forums and I found a couple threads:
SGS Kernel Flasher I would look into this but 1) it seems it won't work for my MT3G and 2) if it would work, I have no idea if it would be safe to use
ezterry's 2708+ enabled kernel I was looking into using this kernel with the updated radio version, seeing that my radio version is 2.22.23.02, but my issue is with the guide he posted. Generally I can figure stuff out, but thats because I have simple step by step instructions to follow. I'm tech savvy, but not a genius when it comes to hacking my phone.
I just want to figure out the easiest way to learn how to get myself a new kernel, be it a youtube tutorial video, a step by step guide from another forum (or one here on xda that I somehow missed, because I looked...)
Any help is much appreciated, even if you tell me "look at this thread you noob"...lol
I should also note that the reason I'm not following ezterry's guide is because I have that feeling I would miss something (because I tend to do that) and end up bricking my phone.
- Download a kernel (zip file)
- put it on the root of your SD card
- Go in Recovery
- Backup with nandroid
- Flash zip file (your kernel.zip)
- reboot
- if it's not working (boot loop), simply restore your backup or find a other kernel to flask
Always flash kernel after the rom, because lot of rom has a kernel inside, so you need to flash after to have your kernel.
Flashing a kernel is the same as a rom, no more risk!
Edit :
! Kernel is not the same than SPL or Radio !
Ok, because some of the stuff i was reading had a laundry list of stuff to download and follow, it was just too confusing.

CM 6 To CM7 X10

Hello,
Simple inquiry with regards to flashing the new CM7 RC4 to Xperia X10a
Device is currently on CM 6.1.3. I have downloaded flash tool as baseband version is .55
I wanted to confirm the proper protocol in order to accomplish a successful flash. Having read through the posts/tutorials I've gathered I will need to flash the lower grade baseband version .52 via flash tool.
As my device is currently on modded firmware would I need to flash back to 2.1 utilizing flash tool. Whats confusing me here is the mentioning that the baseband and kernel is included in the CM7 download file. Q/A for flash tool states it can flash original images 1.6>2.1. As I am currently on 2.2 how does this impact flashing of the appropriate baseband in order to upgrade to CM7.
Furthermore if the baseband is included in the ROM file download. Does that implicate a one step process via flash tool for successful flash to CM7. Would I need an original firmware file to work in tandem with the custom rom via flash tool? Or must I flash baseband seperate from ROM
Any clarification is much appreciated.
Thanks everyone
** Flashed over as per suggested instruction. Experiencing random reboot incidents with CM7
Reviewing online information with regards to a fix. Device is randomly power cycling when left idle and when Browser application is launched from dock bar or app drawer.
Any ideas or implementations for a fix would be appreciated as this is quite frustrating.
- Ive noticed that the instructions for rom installation state to allow the device an idle period of a minute before having it go through an automatic power cycle. however this doesnt seem to happen. upon first boot as soon as i attempt to turn on wifi, the phone will automatically boot itself. speculating that wifi may be involved with the above mentioned incident. still researching.
- Attempted reflash. Skip past initial google setup. Activate Wifi, authenticate with a network. Reboot and disconnect from wifi. Reboot to xrec, fix permissions. Unsuccessful. Same result.
- Installed wififix in apps folder. Same result. Phone will power cycle when downloading apps from market via wifi.
I think the same baseband file is included in the rom's zip file.
first use flashtool to go to .52 baseband then flash the rom in xrecovery.
Sent from my X10i using XDA Premium App
1- go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960527

2- install 2.0.52 via flashtool
3- go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10561990&postcount=2
download the rar file
4- extract update.zip , gapps.zip from the rar file
5- using xrecovery flash update.zip reboot then flash gapps.zip
thanks everyone
as per DynamicRam. procedure worked successfully. did want to be absolutely sure to avoid any mishaps, bad flashes, or bricking of device.
thanks again
Reflashed ROM and gapps within same session. Same issue being experienced. Will attempt another flash.

Conditions to Flash ROMS...

OK, since I'm a frecuent user on this forum, but not a dev. I'm starting this thread to solve some doubts from users that wonder about when they can flash or not flash a ROM when their BootLoader (BL) is Locked, or Unlocked.
I'm pretty sure that this answer is in many posts, but this time I'll be clear about just this in detail.
At this moment, I feel the need to write te post un uppercase, because there's a lot of users that don't understand what is the difference of having an Unlocked, or Locked Bootloader because they just don't seach the forum, and even, people that mix the terms bootloader with root, or not rooted phones. As writing in uppercase means yelling, I'll content myself and i'll do it normally.
Facts:
- The bootloader has nothing to do with the rooting regarding to flashing roms
- all Coocked roms, needs an Unlocked bootloader because they need a "different" Kernel to work, but to flash a "different" kernel, you need to have your Bootloader unlocked
- Rooting your phone is just to have acces to the main files of the rom. Phones has an internal, and external memory (SD card), but you can only see the external, so, to have access to internal memory, you need to have your phone rooted. And, some software that makes changes to your android system, needs to acces the internal memory, so, that software asks you to have a rooted phone.
- The ONLY ROMS that can be flashed to a Bootloader locked phone, are all the main roms (ftf), or the roms that don't have any changes regarding to the kernel. They just are roms that don't have any changes regardind to its functionallity. ie: no overclock, or any other behabiour that demands an alternative kernel to work. But, you always have to install ClockWorkMod (CWM) to flash the roms, so, as nomal kernels doesn't have it included, you have to install it from the market, or from an apk. After doing that opperation, you have to install again the CWM to get the ability to flash some more modded things.
- if you have a rooted phone, doesn't mean that you can install all the roms. An nlocked bootloader is mandatory.
- Kernel modules, and Basebands Libs are two sepparated thing. When you flash roms that are for Gingerbread, you must to flash a kernel that is for GB rom, and if you're flashing an ICS rom, you need to flash a kernel that is for ICS rom. After flashing any of the GB or ICS roms, you have to flash corresponding kernel modules, and it should be done after flashing the main rom. If you want to change your BaseBand (BB), you also have to flash the corresponding BB libs. Some people gets confused about Kernel modules, with BaseBands libs, so they generally gets bootloops after flashing the roms.
- Main Baseband, and main roms (Whole FTF file), should be flashed with Flashtools. And baseband libs, and kernel modules, has to be flashed with recovery ClockWorkMod (CWM). IE: if you want to change your BaseBand from 64 to 70, you have to flash the main Baseband file with flashtool (as when you flash a whole ftf rom). Main ftf baseband files are just ftf files to flash with flashtools. This procedure doesn't kill or modify your actual rom, it just change the Baseband... After that opperation, you have to get into recovery (CWM) mode, and flash the corresponding Baseband libs, in this case, you should flash the BB70 libs.
- there are some cases, and from some regions (countries), that with Baseband 70, your SIM card doesn't works, or it's works partially, in that case, you have to flash the ftf file from BAseband 36, and use the BB libs fron te rom. It happens when you flash ICS roms, but ftf baseband 36 works very well with baseband 70 libs. This is just a tip for all those their SIM card doesn't work with BB 70, like me.
- (more to be added)
(This is for developers): As I'm seeing all the time people asking if the rom could be flashed in a locked bootloader, at the other side, I see devs that don't tell if the rom could be falshed in a locked bootloader, so, I'm giving a diana to all the noobs that ask for that.
Don't spam this thread. If you wanna add something, giveme a PM and I'll add to the list.
PS: sorry for my english. I'm spanish LatinAmerica.
Dont you think you posted in the wrong place..?
although it belongs to general section but im my view it should be made sticky in dis thread coz i hve seen many noobs asking same quest. again and again........
You miss sth. I often use Flashtool to flash my locked Arc without installing CWM Recovery.

[INDEX][GUIDE][FAQ] All Things RAZR I

Welcome to the “All Things” Razr I Index thread. This Index thread contains basic information about the Motorola Razr I a.k.a. XT890 to get you started. It won’t contain any KERNEL and ROM Development, because of the numerous kernels and roms people can make. It would just flood this thread if it happens.
All the work that is presented in this thread belong to their rightful owners. I just sorted them and linked the threads in here.
Everything that u do to your phone it totally your own responsibility. Nobody here or elsewhere can be held account for a failure in flashing, device bricked or a rom problem if u tempered with your own device. But maybe we can help if u ask nicely.
This Index thread contains the following in this order:

Each thread/sections can contain “important” notes
Do your research before doing anything
Read the information the owner of the thread gives u
Highly recommended to have a look at the ‘warnings, bricked devices solutions/discussions’ threads before using RSD-Lite and fastboot commands like flashing manual firmware versions.
Last note:
If u find something missing that should definitely be in this Index thread, please share.
If u find anything wrong and u know the answer, please share.
Can someone have a look at the downgrade section. That’s the only one I don’t know for sure.

Downgrade problems JB -> ICS | Black screen green led | service required code currupt
Downgrading from JB to ICS with a locked bootloader is bad. According to a lot of users it will give u a bricked device. This is because RSD-Lite can also flash the motoboot (bootloader), gpt.bin (partition table) and motobp (radio?) and those 3 may never be downgraded only upgraded. Can only be resolved at a service station.
With an unlocked bootloader it is possible, but then again, don’t flash the motoboot, gpt.bin and motobp!

Unbricking JB to ICS downgraded hardbricks (Maart, 2013)
This is a unbrick method when u have the following message: Service Required Code Corrupt or black screen - green light. But be careful. This fix can help most of the problems, but not all because of the firmware differences. If it doesn't work for you, have a look at the one below. The owner and thread is still worth mentioning because of the finding of a possible fix, the many devices the owner saved and the discussion about the problem that came along.
Unbricking "Service Required Code Corrupt" (May, 2013)
A better documented unbrick method as the one above, but the same. Still won’t help everybody. But won’t harm your device more than it can and already is if u need this. Only for downgrade problems, everything other needs RSD-Lite or Jellybean versions of the files.
Other issues/discussions
Locked Bootloader, can't access Recovery
If u have a locked bootloader and u can’t access the recovery anymore and even RSD-Lite (latest version) with stock firmware (JB) won't work, there is no possible way to resurrect it, yet. Most of the time it means that you have a bad sector in your EMMC (flash memory) and with a locked bootloader it can’t be erased/written to.
PDS Partition Fix (July, 2014)
In TWRP recovery u can erase PDS. Never do it! Will be fixed when 4.4 is out.
Issue Locked bootloader
If u have any issue with your phone (bootloop, stuck on bootlogo) and u have a locked bootloader, try the following:
Reboot to stock recovery
Do a "factory reset"
If that doesn't solve it, flash your original firmware (JB) with RSD-Lite! Make sure u use one of the latest versions of RSD-Lite, 6.1.x. 6.1.5 is the latest (Augustus, 2014)
Unlocked bootloader
If u have any issue with your phone (bootloop, stuck on bootlogo) and u have a unlocked bootloader, try the following (all staps are on there own. If one doesn't work, try another):
Reflash your custom ROM if u use one (don't wipe) (Renews your system partition, stays of your data)
Wipe your data/cache in recovery (does what it says)
Wipe partitions system/data/cache and flash new rom (reflash whole new system)
Do a nandroid restore if u have a nandroid backup of the rom (restore a previous nandroid)
Do a RSD-Lite flash, use latest versions of your stock firmware and RSD-Lite. (reflash to complete stock)
H. DOWNGRADE TO ICS
If u still want to downgrade from JB to ICS for whatever reason, those are the most save methods, because we disable the flashing of the ‘motoboot’, ‘gpt.bin’ and 'motobp'. There are 2 methods, 1 is by RSD-Lite with a modified xml file and the other one is flashing all the files manually. CANNOT BE DONE WITH LOCKED BOOTLOADER only unlocked!!!
RSD Lite:
Follow and read one of the tutorials for RSD-Lite and download your ICS Stock version of your device!
Set everything up and before flashing remove the following lines from the included XML file of the firmware u want to flash:
Code:
“<step operation= “flash” partition= “gpt” filename= “gpt_signed” MD5= “*****”>”
“<step operation= “flash” partition= “motoboot” filename= “motoboot” MD5= “*****”>”
“<step operation= “flash” partition= “motobp” filename= “motobp” MD5= “*****”>”
U maybe need to delete the following line also:
Code:
“<step operation= “getvar” var=”max-download-size”
U should be good to go!
Manually:
For manually flashing we need “mFastboot”. See GERNERAL (DEV) Tools for more information.
Download your firmware and extract it.
Now use the following commands in a command prompt. Make sure they are correctly spelled and return an “OKEY”!
Code:
[LIST]
[*]mfastboot flash boot boot_signed
[*]mfastboot flash recovery recovery_signed
[*]mfastboot flash system system_signed
[*]mfastboot erase cache
[*]mfastboot erase userdata
[/LIST]
I. FROM STOCK TO CUSTOM ROM
See threads that are mentioned above for more details.
Backup your important data from your phone to PC or elsewhere
Get ADB, Fastboot and your device drivers working
Unlock your bootloader with the above method
Install one of the recovery’s
Install a Rom and/or kernel from one of the threads in the Development section of the Razr I Board through custom recovery.
J. FROM CUSTOM ROM TO STOCK
See threads that are mentioned above for more details. If u want to relock too, have a look here (only for jellybean)
Backup your important data from your phone to PC or elsewhere
Get RSD-Lite working
Download the latest official android firmware for your device. (Always jellybean, unless u had ICS installed before the custom rom and to be on the safe side, never used a Jellybean version, then u can try ICS too)
Flash through RSD-Lite
Enormous post hazou! THank's a lot for all your work!
(work on rom, work on thread... etc)
Excellent job!

A question :
I'm whith KTR rom 2.2 ( JB 4.1.2 ) and, as all users, i have the unlocked phone screen when i boot my razr I.
If i do the step H. of the guide in order to downgrade to ICS, can i change the unlocked screen whith another one, and after reflash KTR rom ( JB ) in order to don't have anymore this unlocked screen at boot ???

To flash a working logo image u need the bootloader (motoboot) from ICS. But if u flash the motoboot from ICS coming from a jellybean rom (is using the motoboot from jellybean) u will brick your device. (unless as stated, u have never bean on stock JB or installed the firmware from stock JB and u flashed from stock ICS to KTR-rom. So u have the stock ICS bootloader. But i think nobody in this world has that anymore.)
The bootloader and its necessary files may never be downgraded!! I will make a point in the guide to address your question.
So, to answer your question. No u can't!
OK , thanks hazou !
There is definitively no solutions to remove this shi...of bootscreen ....
hey, I wanted to flash the stock rom with the rsd tool and I got my phone bricked, green light flashing, no code error message. Is there any solution for that problem?
edit: ok, I made a stupid mistake by accidentally downloading the ICS stock rom instead of the JB... f**k

Need help flashing ROM on I545

Hi it is the first time I am flashing Android ROM. I have done some reading already. Before I start, I still have a few questions and also want to make sure I am doing it right.
I own the Galaxy S4 Verizon I545. It is running Samsung ROM Android 4.4.2, Baseband I545VRUFNC5. My goal is to flash a new ROM with recent Android versions, hopefully 7.1.1 (but I would settle with Marshmallow if that is more stable), it can be close to AOSP, I don't need ROMs with extra features.
In my understanding, the bootloader is locked, it will only load signed kernels and recovery. And then the kernel would load the system. In order to flash the system, it is best to flash the recovery first with TWRP. TWRP is modded with loki hack so it would load with the locked bootloader.
So here are my questions:
1. Does it matter which firmware/baseband I am currently on? For some phones (LG G2) I heard newer firmware fixed the loki hack. Should I update to the latest Samsung rom or leave it at NC5?
2. I don't see many ROM posted for the i545, which one is the most recent and reasonable stable? The Cyanogen website is down, should I try LineageOS?
3. I see different instructions for flashing TWRP. Can I flash it with just Odin? Some instruction mentioned rooting the phone first with KingRoot or other root, and then use dd. Does the phone have to be rooted? (I prefer not to if it is not necessary)
4. If after I flashed recovery, it fails to boot into TWRP, what can I do to restore everything to default?
5. The kernel will be untouched in the process right? I am only flashing recovery and system ROM, and the kernel will work fine with the new system ROM?
Here are the step and software I plan to use:
0. reset the phone to factory
1. use Odin to flash TWRP 2.8.7
2. download a ROM compatible with I545 and place it on the phone
3. flash the system using TWRP
Any feedback would be appreciated.
PS: Also I have a LG G2 D801. I would flash that phone instead if it is easier. I just want to get started and learn some things along the way.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon
Oh Sorry. Didn't notice there is another forum. Should I repost there?
Yes.
1. Yes, it does matter. As you said, newer firmwares have fixed the exploits which make the phone harder to hack.
2. Any ROM should support your phone. They are generally unified.
3. In the name of anything holy, do not root with KingRoot. If you want to root, then the only way to go is CF-Auto-Root.
Rooting is sometimes necessary because recovery won't always install with Odin.
4. Flash stock ROM.
5. Kernels are specific to ROMs. So no, the kernel won't be untouched.
