[Q] how do I update my kernel - myTouch 3G, Magic General

I recently flashed Gio's OTA Froyo 1.8.1 and once it had finished flashing, it noted to upgrade my kernel version.
I've flashed at least a hundred rom's onto my phone, but I've never updated or flashed a new kernel. I skimmed the forums and I found a couple threads:
SGS Kernel Flasher I would look into this but 1) it seems it won't work for my MT3G and 2) if it would work, I have no idea if it would be safe to use
ezterry's 2708+ enabled kernel I was looking into using this kernel with the updated radio version, seeing that my radio version is 2.22.23.02, but my issue is with the guide he posted. Generally I can figure stuff out, but thats because I have simple step by step instructions to follow. I'm tech savvy, but not a genius when it comes to hacking my phone.
I just want to figure out the easiest way to learn how to get myself a new kernel, be it a youtube tutorial video, a step by step guide from another forum (or one here on xda that I somehow missed, because I looked...)
Any help is much appreciated, even if you tell me "look at this thread you noob"...lol

I should also note that the reason I'm not following ezterry's guide is because I have that feeling I would miss something (because I tend to do that) and end up bricking my phone.

- Download a kernel (zip file)
- put it on the root of your SD card
- Go in Recovery
- Backup with nandroid
- Flash zip file (your kernel.zip)
- reboot
- if it's not working (boot loop), simply restore your backup or find a other kernel to flask
Always flash kernel after the rom, because lot of rom has a kernel inside, so you need to flash after to have your kernel.
Flashing a kernel is the same as a rom, no more risk!
Edit :
! Kernel is not the same than SPL or Radio !

Ok, because some of the stuff i was reading had a laundry list of stuff to download and follow, it was just too confusing.

[guide] PS3 hack [Magic 32a | 3.22radio]

As I had some difficulties putting together the guides out there, for the ps3 hack, and used quite an amount of time, figuring this out.
I finally managed to prepare my phone for this, so I though I would share
1st you need the right radio and SPL (HBOOT) and custom recovery
2nd you need to flash Cyanogen mod 6
3rd you need to flash EIB1 port
and at last you can flash the PSfreedom mod kernel
The guide:
1. the goal is to obtain 3.22 radio and 1.33 SPL and custom recovery. Use this tool
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824435
1.1 It's important you don't have radio/SPL mismatch in order to use this tool. If you have 6.35 radio, you need to flash 1.76 SPL first.
1.2 After this you can flash old files (this flashes both 3.22 radio, 1.33 SPL and custom recovery.
2. Now, you can go on and flash cyanogen mod 6.0.0. I used the froyo redux modded, but i recommend using this clean install though
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/files/category/3-htc-dream-htc-magic/
2.1 flash it, by using custom recovery. get into recovery by turning of phone, and press and hold "home" + "power" buttons.
2.2 1st you ned to wipe "data/factory reset" and "cache" (i wiped dalvik as well)
2.3 go back, and choose "flash zip from sd card" and locate the zip file.
2.4 reboot to make sure everything is fine
3. Now you can flash the EBI1 port, from here, for the 6.0.0 version, via the custom recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592377
3.1 reboot
4. Finally you can flash the PSfreedom kernel. get it from here
http://psfreedom.com/wiki/HTC_Magic_32A
4.1 reboot
Finally, you are ready to hack your ps3.
For further instructions follow the already made guide for PSfreedom here
http://psfreedom.com/wiki/index.php?title=Using_psfreedom
feel free to comment, so we can make this guide as accurate as possible, in case I should have forgot something or written something unclear
Good luck!
Why don't do you just flash ps3 custom firmware?
The 3.55 have been out for quite some time now.
I did that long time ago and it's working perfectly.
The usb-dongle hack is to annoying.
For your guide to work, you must have 1 requirement at the first step.
The device needs an eng spl for it to work.
The rest seems all ok :0)
Anyway, thank you for making a contribution.
Heh... yeah I found that on youtube today (CWF)... haven't gotten it to work yet though... but it's only transfering the game to internal though, so I guess it doesn't matter which method I use, dongle or no dongle...
but upgraded to CFW 3.55 too now.

I see often in the forums the questions of newbies about flashing a new stock or custom ROM. What steps are needed to be safe, how to backup data, …..
I created a short tutorial with links to some essential tools named "Steps to flash a new ROM"
It describes the 4 steps you need to know before flashing a new ROM:
1) Backup your system
2) Backup your applications
3) Different ways to flash a ROM
4) How to restore if something goes wrong
Hope it helps some forum members.

[Q] baseband question(s)

Hey guys,
would-be first time rooter here. Couple of questions. Sorry if they answered somewhere, could not find where. Basebands and kernels are not covered for dummies in any guide.
1. My phone is X8, E15i, baseband M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404006, kernel 2.6.29, build version 2.0.1.A.0.47, 2.1-update1. PC companion does not want to update it any further and since in every rooting guide is stated i need the last version, i am not sure what to do. Here is stated that the last version is 2.0.2.A.0.24. But nowhere it's said if I would have to have in installed already or the flashing process does it for me. So do I just download Baseband 006 - kernel 2.0.2.A.0.24 and use it with flashtool?
2. Is 015 better / newer version than 006? Lots of custom stuff requires 015. Lots of threads refer to 015 as to the latest baseband and from what I've read if I flash 015 over a 006 device I will brick it or infinite loop it. Does this mean I am stuck forever with the 006 and cannot use GingerDX for example?
General explanation of basebands / kernel stuff will be GREATLY appreciated.
thanks in advance.
don
You need xxx015 baseband to run custom ROMS correctly. Download the latest firmware, unpack it to firmwares folder inside Flashtool installation folder (default C:/flashtool). Flash it and you should get newest baseband. This will erase all your data so, make a backup of important stuff. Then use toolbox to root your phone and obtain recoveries. Then pick your favorite ROM, unlock bootloader (if you don't worry about warranty, but read guides in general and android development section to avoid hard brick) flash required kernel and have fun If you have problem with bootloops perform a full-wipe in recovery.
To enter xRecovery tap back button repeatedly on Sony Ericsson's logo.
To enter ClockworkMod tap the screen. On custom kernels tap back button.

Please don't start another *how do I root* thread there are dozens if not hundreds of postings on here explaining in great detail how to achieve root.
sorry but....
1. I ask for the best and easy way to root android 4
2.also for the best firmware.
thank you anyway...
To get root & custom recovery, the following methods are reported to be working with the latest Asus ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1689193
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1681155
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1688012
The first method ( [TOOL]PERI-0.4 One click root+recovery/fix-bootloops+soft-bricks ALL Devices V0.4) works well for me on TF101G with latest ICS . Just install it on the PC, run the .BAT file and follow the instructions to root and install Custom Recovery and Root / SU on the Transformer.
The only issue I've had is that this custom Recovery won't seem flash the ASUS stock ROM for some reason. So what I do now is use the above tool to get root and Custom Recovery, then use that to flash ClockWorkMod Recovery v6.0.1.4 NoTouch Hybrid from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1855686 - click the Download link and get the cwm-6.0.1.4-notouch-hybrid.zip file (apparently the Touch version is currently broken).
From CWM recovery you should be able to flash any custom ROM and kernel etc., and also return to stock by flashing the ASUS stock ROM from their download site (make sure you select the right one for your model and unzip it first - for some reason they put the zip ROM inside another zip).
If you do return to stock, don't forget you'll also lose root and custom recovery so you'll need to start over.
I'm using Android Revolution HD 3.4.3 3G which seems pretty stable. I've also heard good things about Revolver, but I couldn't get 3G working on the 3G version.
Good luck.
1 click root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1689193
This worked for me. Just make sure you download version for your transformer.
well thank you all ...
thank you all...

[Q] Backup Kernel How To question

Hi,
I have a small question. I own a Canadian Samsung 4 SGH-i337m, after reading the main guide for running other carrier rom on this address
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2295557
As the guide mention that I didn't need the loki kernel and I could use my carrier kernel.
I used to backup my kernel with SGS kernel flasher to do the job, but it's not working for s4.
I wanted to backup my stock kernel and apply it after the installation of a cursom rom and apply it through TWRP. As I understood it, kernel is the boot.img, and I read somewhere that the way to create this is to copy the boot.img + copy the /sytem/lib/modules files. If I look to the file prepared by iB4STiD in the file MDOB-I337M-VMK6-FIX-4.1 present here, it seems that it's the case.
There is still flashify as a solution but you can't use the file into recovery.
Does someone know how to do it, or point me out where to find a guide where I can do what I want.
thanks in advance,

What type of ROM are you using? You have to be using a compatible kernel. AOSP ROM's won't work with a stock kernel, and you can't cross Android version between system and kernel. Using any custom kernel developed for your phone with this guide will work okay however.
Thank you for your answer.
in order to answer your question I was trying to flash the hyperdrive to my phone with compatibility pack. But after reboot I go back directly to download mode. So I figured that it was the boot partition that wasn't adapted to my phone.
So yes, I understand that if you flash a rom based on code as cyanogenmod you will need a custom kernel. but for a rom that is based on stock as hyperdrive rom, unless I'm mistaken, I would imagine that the stock kernel should work.:cyclops:
Is there a way to back it up?

My best guess is find out which partition it is and use the dd command OR download the ODIN of your firmware version and extract the boot.img. However, it would be easier to just use a custom kernel designed for your phone as if you back it up like that you either have to make it into a flashable zip or use heimdall to restore it every time.

Thanks for your answer.
That's weird as a nandroid is doing the job, that is hard to find how to backup a kernel.
anyway, I guess my best chance is to download a custom kernel and apply it after installation of the cutom rom. At first boot re apply a backup kernel with an app as flashify.
thanks youpi
