[Q] Speed slow Torrents (not illegal) fast. - EVO 4G General

So Normal browsing and downloads i get roughly 6kb/s downloading. But When I am downloading something that is used as a torrent (think of a Ubuntu file) i can get up to a constant of 40-80 kb/s.
I found this a little odd to be honest. If anyone can shed light as to why I can download via a p2p network at roughly ten times the speed i normally get would be awesome.
all speed test apps say I get roughly 80kbps or less which would go against me downloading via a torrent at 40-80 KB/s. The app is not reporting a false speed either because there is a few minute to half hour difference if not more when i download things via that and then test it on something else. I tried many different servers to see if they were the clogg and it is all the same speed at roughly 6KB/s but with any torrented file I get at least 40 KB/S..
When I refer to torrent I refer to open source projects that is easier to torrent instead of spend a lot on servers.... So no accusing of illegal torrenting or getting off topic please...

All I can say is, Welcome to Sprint, the Now Network, where 3g speeds are no better than dial-up from 1995.

Its horrible but true. I hope this network vision plan they got going will change it for most of us!

One I coined the " Now DialUp Network".
Two lol I was wondering if anyone had experienced the the same thing or if anyone could explain what I am seeing.

With speeds this crappy, it's HIGHLY likely if you run a speed test, then run another a few seconds later, you will get very different speeds.

very slow 3G/HSDPA data connection with all builds :(

Can anyone confirm if they have a rock solid 3G/HSDPA data connection with HKCSL 1010 with any android builds? Please post APNs and radio/wm ROM/combinations if possible. It is nowhere near the speeds from my WM ROM from before but I just love the Android OS so much more as it's smoother and faster than any custom WM ROM's available. It runs great if it's on WI-FI, i just can't pay for my data connection and settle for a nice OS and almost 500Kbps data connection for now it's very frustrating and dissapointing since i'm in HKCSL 1010 NEXT G data plan..
I don't think the hardware supports TRUE HSDPA data

with latest builds, i have problem with bad signal reception... a have edge connection most of time.. i didn`t have this problem before... now in 4 builds i`ve tryied.. maybe it is because ppp?
Thanks for the replies guys but what do u mean true hsdpa? We are on a 3.5G network and also I see some other fellow users having 3g speeds of 3-5mbps which is super fast already. I have tried almost every rom out there and different barebone WM ROM as well but made no difference. Speeds are like GPRS slow! Tried PPP and RMNET but can't even tell a difference...sad as I can't use it with full potential.

Those numbers aren't exactly true as the browsing is slow as hell. I don't know how speedtest.net do it but it sure hell ain't that fast as it seems like it's constipated.
Most I get on every build I've tried is rough 0.33mbs connection, I've hit nothing over 45kb/s yet seem to be able to upload at over 70, that's on T-MOB UK, pain in the arse but I just try and stick to wifi, nothing I can figure out after swapping so many roms/radios/builds/modules etc etc etc!!!!
try out bangsters 1.4 (the latest i think) and edit the startup to PPP, used chuckyrom and 2.12 radio and seems like it's working pretty good. Not much constipation at all. Try it out and let me know. I only had wifi so couldn't check 3G speeds before (here in HK for trip now).
i am using darkstones desire hd build on o2 in the uk and currently get roughly 2meg down when connected to hsdpa

Still the same, I can't figure out the issue, only thing I can get it down to is something on T-MOBs end, but even that I don't know haha!!!!

Lei ho..
Please try my setup via my tag, I'm getting 2.3Mbit for download and 700kb for upstream..
BladeZ
Since moving to Android on HD2 from the myTouch Slide, my data speeds have oddly evened out.
Meaning, data speeds have increased in places I used to only get EDGE coverage at and decreased to about 2mbps where I used to get 4-5.
I just hopped on to this part of XDA but I've gathered that Android development has only been happening for about three months. That's nothing! Look at all the cool stuff people have done! I think it's only a matter of time before the radios and builds start jiving a bit better. I'm ultra happy with what I've got so far.

hi BladeZ, lei ho ah! Thanks for the advice. Just wondering if you are in HK and using the provider as me?
Regards
My speedtest results are good (~450-500 kB/sec down, 150 kB up) on 3g, but when I use the market, the speeds are much slower. Same with wifi: speedtest reports excellent results, but using market is slow.
Hi I just flashed back to a dutty's WM rom and the browsing speed is much more faster and consistant. The rom is fast but opera just isn't smooth at scrolling and the windows limitation of colors isn't as smooth either. There are always some good and bad for the 2. I miss android already...but until there is a fix for consistent 3G and hsdpa connection, it is not ready for primetime yet...just my personal opinion.

I'd have to agree unfortunately. Android's biggest weakness in my eyes is it's reliance on online connectivity. Nearly every app on Android needs to go online. So when the online connection is intermittent and unstable it makes Android virtually defunct.
for all the fellas having Data being slow....read on!
GUYS!!! been fiddling with this $hit long enough! Today, just found out why my provider and 3G speeds are so damn slow. I read up on other forums (not xda) and played with APN settings. Don't know if they were case sensitive or not, or whatever..but i simply put in my provider name "CSL", and APN as "internet" and leave EVERYTHING ELSE blank, i get a screaming fast connection. NO HICCUPS NO CONSTIPATION. TRY IT!!! Don't input all those garbage numbers as it just confuses you! ONE thing though, you will not be able to access WAP I believe but i don't use it anyways. I have a LIMITED data plan and all this testing been taking up my 500MB quota already so I won't even bother with the speedtest process anymore. GOOD LUCK and please report back guys!
I m getting speeds upto 2.6 mbps download and upload 500 kbps with desire hd rom..2.14 radio..energy Rom in winmo..

speedtest.net

Why does speedtest.net ( android app & website) think I am in Washington state whenever I try and ping to test my speed? I live in virginia, which is on the opposite coast. The server options on the android app are all near washington state, they dont give me any to ping near me. Has anyone else had this issue? Its not a big deal I just cant get any good up or down speed numbers since it pings so far. Read sig for phone info.

I was wondering same thing; so, on speedtest.net I clicked on help/FAQ and there is a point made that the referred website uses the ip-address and may update the info later.
i think it has something to do with your mobile IP address... i know i had a computer one time that had a non-static IP address and i live in AZ it always showed me in colorado...
There's some kind of issue in the build.prop file or elsewhere when the devs are compiling the builds. This definitely needs to be compiled as a bug. It's giving big latency errors when browsing the web as its connected to a server not even close to where we actually are IE i'm in dallas and WA is always the servers i'm browsing from. Only build that scales this correctly to this date that i have tried is bangsters 1.5 stock build. Long time dealer of the issue here
Snoqualmie, WA to be exact...lol wtf
I think it is dependent
on what carrier you have.

Your speeds are 0kbps? Wow. I get better (or same) speeds on my microwave.
EDIT: I know I'm going to break a number of rules or even get banned, but I cannot resist it.

You should run a speed test.
A common and reliable one is http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
the top numbers in red and green is the TOTAL amount of download and upload data you have used... the bottom numbers in white are the current speed you are getting (if ur actually downloading something at the moment or surfing the web)
Many variables come into play to determine speeds; network load, signal quality, test server location, other obstructions on the pc (such as firewall), etc..
In general, on 3g, i've seen download speeds up to ~1.5 mbps, with average of 600-800 kbps, upload speeds of 300-800 kbps.
4G, download up to 6 mbps, 12 mbps burst with full 4g signal, about 1 mbps upload either way. ymmv
Just did speak easy test from my phone. Got 737kbps download and 372 kbps for upload. These numbers any good??
That seems about normal. Download speeds will go to about 1.7 MBps while upload hovers around 1 MBps.
1.58Mb/s down
.56Mb/s up
Wish I had 4G lol

It may seem like you didn't understand what the screen said, however, when I installed Calkulin's 1.7.1....my speeds dropped to almost zero....basically non-existant. I had to run the new Sprint RUU and email customer service again to do a reset on my phone. Whatever they do, it works! I am now getting 1.5Mbps d/l and about 500kbps up. Something is going on with flashing roms as this never used to happen. Now, it seems to happen all the time. I wish there was more information from others about this or from the DEVS. I am wondering if by tweeking to make it better/faster/smoother....files are being deleted that are intertwined for 3G to work or connect properly.
Also, I am wondering, since in the era of Big Brother, if Sprint knows by reading our systems...if they can monitor and thus limit what is allowed to be used for bandwidth. I ran an app called 3gtest and it showed that all ports were first pretty much allowed except for a few.....then it would show all blocked except for port 22 sh.....just a thought as I know for me, something is borking my 3G and it just started recently after flashing about 100 roms.

Possibly how to get VERY fast download speeds using wired tether and 4G

OK so this only applied to file downloads unfortunately (I think) BUT,
When initiating only one file download transfer speeds for me typically average about 40 KB/s, but when I then start multiple downloads while the first is still going I've been seeing averages of about 130-150 KB/s. I've only just seen this while downloading ROMs while tethered with a 4G connection but hopefully others can try/confirm this. I use my phone for my primary internet connection so I found this very useful for downloading large files.
That's pretty slow for 4G. I get speeds twice that on my 3G connection.

While tethered to your computer and then downloading to the computer though? I get much faster speeds down to the phone as well, but as far as I've understood it the tethering speeds have been poor so far for the shift.
If it is while tethered, which tethering app/version are you running? I've tried wireless tether, wired tether, and easytether and all have seemed to result in the same slow results for me.
Try using azilink (I have a post on this in the themes and apps section), it is a USB tether which is free, open source, and gives me download speeds over 1Mb/s (depending on the server from which I am downloading).

Throttled while downloading...???

So in the past week whenever I download my podcasts to listen in my car, the download speeds are basically on Edge, which means It takes about an hour for one download..which is my total commute.
So the thing is I just flashed bionix 1.3 and it had ka5 modem, I thought it might be the modem so I got ka7... After doing a speed test which was around 1mg down I stuck with it...but never the less my download speeds for my podcasts are still at around .1megabits.... I then tried kb1 but still no luck... My speed tests are great but actual download speed in the native browser is horrific... The thing is websites load very fast, I can stream the exact same podcasts through flash player and they work flawlessly.. I even downloaded the same podcasts with opera mini browser and they go at around 1.5 megabits per secound...it seems that only downloading through the native browser does this...any one have an idea of what is going on? Have you heard of anything like this? Am I being throttled on downloads? Btw the websites were I listen to these podcasts are revision3,twit.tv and cnet, if that helps ...
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Check your account on the web you may be throttled. Also you may want to try Dolphin browser. It works very well
If you reached your 10Gb cap then you would throttled to roughly Edge speeds.
10Gb is a lot of data to chew through in a month but if you tether a bunch for long periods thata your culprit.

Have you tried using a podacast app like google listen or podcatcher to d/l instead of using the browser? I usually listen to twit live using the twit app, I don't d/l anymore it just takes too long.

5 GB is the current plan. 10 GB is the old grandfathered one.
i thought they throttle you at 5gb. i reach that limit just about every month. either way, t-mobile will text you if you are being throttled due to limit cap, so if they haven't done that, that's probably not it. I can't really help you other than to tell you to go buy "doggcatcher". It's pretty much the best podcast tool out on android. it's a few bucks but if your'e the type of person that listens to podcasts a lot it's definitely worth it.
1. you can set a schedule so that your phone will automatically update and download your podcast feed with the most recent episode and you can set how many episodes it will save at one time.
2. set it to only download podcasts onto your phone if your on wifi only and or if your phone is plugged into a power source.
3. you can long press podcasts and stream it over 3g if the podcast rss updated but your not on wifi to download it.
4. does audio and video. you can even choose the video player of your choice.
5. very nice clean interface.
6. you can add podcast feeds by searching, recommendations, rss, and popular podcasts are ready to add easily and instantly (twit network, revision3, youtube, npr, bbc)
that's just a few useful things off the top of my head that this program can do. trust me. just buy the program let it work it's magic when your on wifi while you sleep and when you're on your commute you will have a bunch of content ready for you to listen to without worrying about being throttled or being cut off in the middle of a podcast.
It takes some time to setup doggcatcher just the way you want it to fit to your schedule but once you got it down, i'm sure you'll be happy with this program.
sorry i couldn't answer your throttle question but this thing will definitely help keep your 3g data traffic low.
cheers,
dan
Thanks to everyone for the quick replies.. Before posting this I checked my data usage and I als checked it this morning as well, it states that I am at 1gig... also a side note, the tmobile my account app, has a reminder setting that lets you know when your reaching your limit, but it won't let me activate it because i am on the "unlimited" plan.. i thought that was wierd, since i know i have a 5 gig cap... but anyways back to my original post, thanks dan and badaphook for your suggestion on apps, I will look into them.
My post is more regarding the fact that it seem that my downloads are being throttled. When viewing websites and doing speed tests Im getting anywhere from 1-2.5mgbits but downloading doesnt come close.. only then does my connection seem to be throttled. Has anyone heard of this or experienced it? I would call tmobile to see if they have anything to do with it, but I'm not sure if it might be a side effect of my rom? any ideas anyone?
