First of all I just wanna thank everyone who wrote a guide/post/tip/etc about the installation process, i upgraded from stock froyo as soon as i unboxed the defy, and it went flawlessly (considering that's my first android what-so-ever phone); so thanks!
next on, i wanna know what else i should customize, like what are the best settings to optimize it even more (battery-wise and performance-wise)
also, what are the usual recommended apps/widgets for everyday use or apps with cool features ?
btw how can i limit internet access to my apps ? (like turn inet off or on)

Video - I use MoboPlayer. It plays most video formats flawlessly.
Music - You cannot go wrong with poweramp, althoug I use the stock music player of CM7. But poweramp has some nice features like showing album art in lock screen and many others.
PowerStrip - the default powerstrip in the notifications menu is rich, but if you need more then, you should explore Quicksettings .
Launcher - By default, CM7 comes with ADW, but I love GOLauncher. The screen transitions effects are awesome.Do try it out....
For internet control of apps, you can use Droid Wall or LBE Privacy Gaurd. I use droid wall and is good. I have used CM7 for about a month then tried other ROMs like MIUI/WIUI/MS2G etc. Now I m on MS2G back since it has 720p recording capability and great battery backup. If you use phone, more or less every ROM eats the battery same way, but the standby time each ROM consumes battery differently which makes the difference. I found ROMs based of CM7 consume 1% for every 35-40min but MS2G consumes 1% for every 2.5-3 hours. I use LG camera app with 13-20Mbit/sec rate for 720p recording and the video quality is jut good.
Use Titanium backup and freeze moto services. You may give a try and see with MS2G 720p capability you can enjoy for some time.

I highly recommend doing the battery optimization first before customizing the settings.
First thing you want to do is change the default notification from Silent to something else so you hear when you have emails, texts, etc.
There is a lot of stuff in the optimization guide to help you get things started and set-up. I like going into the Messaging app and have it not only divide texts into 160 character blocks but also number them so people know the reading order as they aren't always sent and received contiguously.
I think that is a good start for now!
Being a CM9 user since day 1 I figured out that you will NEVER want to use an app form the market which allows you to change the frequencies of your phone. I found out that it drains battery EVEN MORE then when using the built in one under Performance.
And I highly recommend that you get Juice Defender. Ultimate is best because it allows you to choose what apps you want to have data turned on for.
And if you monkey around with Voodoo control I'm sure you'll find something to your likes.
Screen Filter from the market is also a great tool. If you think the lowest brightness is to much and want it darker then use that tool.
I recently learned that custom kernels are not recommended.

I'd like to know how this is possible. I mean, if you're undervolting (throwing less power to run a specific speed) I would like to know how this actually drains battery quicker. It simply goes against logic.
Not saying I don't believe you, but I would like it explained why this is true.

I can't get it to work at all. It installs and looks like its all there but I've left 4 voice messages for myself in the past hour and nothing.

Did you run the app once? It provisions the first time you run it, and tells you with Toast messages.

Yes it did all of that as with any tw rom when you do fresh flash and set up phone. I even just for nostalgic reasons played the two set up messages. But I then used my wife's phone and called myself and left several voice messages but nothing comes through the app. I read everywhere people having success with this and I'm struggling. I even tried sending the [email protected] message and it looks like it sent but nothing happens.
Edit: I am getting the text messages alerting me that o have a VM but the app is not downloading the messages. I still have to dial #1 on dialer to dial my voice mail.

I get a 9016 message with provisioning successful but if there was a toast message it was so quick I missed it but I don't think there was one. Does this mean that I need to delete data for the app and try again or does this mean it provisioned but like edfunkycold I too get the text messages about new VM but the app doesn't download them. In fact the messages aren't on sprints VM system like the app told it to delete the message as if it had downloaded, even though there is no message in the app to listen to.

Well its mainly for those who leave it in their pocket for long periods of time. Because if you have apps like twitter, facebook, or anything like that they run in the background and the cpu will require more power to run them all. Now if you used an app from the market to control them it would drain battery because it requires battery to run apps in the background and that app you supposedly have from the market will run in the background, thus causing battery to drain even if you're under volting it.
If that wasn't very clear tell me.

Same problem here, except I dont think that mine are getting deleted, cuz I can still call my VM and listen to them. But for the life of me I can not get the VVM to work, I have tried absolutely everything I can think of. Please if anyone can figure out what the deal here is, it would be greatly appreciated. The loss of VVM was pretty much the only thing I didn't like about This CM9 for Epic, since I flashed the alpha 1.
Edit: Just an update: when I use Sprint VVM to compose a message to myself, to test send and receive functions, It sends the VM to me just fine. I get the 9016 text and its on my VM but It still does not show up in the Sprint VVM app.

Exactly how I tried to test it except the message I composed and successfully sent was not on VM when I call in after getting the 9016 message saying I got that VM. This is what leads me to believe that sprint VVM is failing to download the message and deletes it from the VM system as if it had.

I see where you're coming from, I think. So you're saying Voltage Control, for example, would be running more frequently if I have a lot of apps that update in the background becuase in addition to those apps running, VC would then have to run more to produce more power to run the other apps.
I guess I was under the impression that VC would run at boot (however you have it set up) but it wouldn't continue to run once the settings were in place. For example, I never see Voltage Control as an app listed in the running apps or or cached processes for that matter either.
So then my question becomes if it's not an active running app, and it's not a cached app either, how is it draining more battery?

i dont think it does. i never see it as a running app, and it doesnt show up as using the battery in battery stats, so i think this guy is misinformed on that aspect. if youre using undervolted settings with the ondemand governor, you probably wont be using more battery than on stock. im in know way absolutely sure of this and im not a dev or computer genius or anything like that, but im pretty sure the battery problems that DO occur are on the custom kernel side. since a custom kernel is needed to overclock and undervolt, and some of the 3rd party kernels have had some battery draining issues, like wake lock issues and stuff, i can see where one would get the impression that using an oc/uv app might be causing battery draining issues. i myself am using the shadow kernel which oc's to 1400 mhz and at first was getting terrible battery status. but after messing around with a few settings, reading up on tips for saving battery, and tweaking juice defender ultimate to my liking, im getting exceptional battery life. almost as good as the stock kernel. i would have dealt with a bigger difference in battery drain for voodoo color anyways. not to mention, the added bonuses of being able to oc/uv. im in no way trying to knock the stock kernel, my preference is just that, my preference.
as far as a custom kernel not being recommended...thats easy, its also not recommended to root your phone or flash a custom ROM. nuff said, right?
p.s. while voltage control does NOT show up on my battery stats, juice defender ultimate DOES. VC does NOT seem to be running in the background at all times, but JD definitely IS.

So after a big long ordeal (accidentally flashed mtd over bml and soft bricked my phone for a day lol ) I finally got it fixed with odin. Then I managed to get back to a working backup that had a working version of Sprint VVM and backed up the data with titanium backup then got my cm9 beta 0 restored and flashed a fresh version of SVVM then went in and made sure it was set in the dialer settings and then restored the app data and the provisioned and still no damn luck.

This is because VC loads the custom changes at boot time and is no longer needed. Where as JD is a service that performs periodic actions based on how the user setup JD. In essence JD will consume a slight bit of battery but the increase in savings will outweigh it's consumption. If anyone would like I can try and determine JDs exact usage if it registers in any of the available tools for checking apps battery/CPU usage. As far as I'm aware it does not show up in androids battery info section commonly used to show battery usage in screen shots here on the forum. I of course would post those findings if any in the battery thread.
For those who can't enable the native HOTSPOT as reported on issue 148, try side-loading android-wifi-tether.
With AWT, I can have AP infrastructure hotspot using netd, with WPA2 encryption and multiple Android devices connected. The trick is to configure the device profile as an Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy or any Samsung device that shows netd option in the Setup-Method. Optionally, turn off driver force-reload to get rid of a harmless error message (works fine either way).
A nice thing about AWT is it shows the hotspot real time, accumulative bandwidth usage, and if you don't need to use AP infrastructure mode, you can even lower the ad-hoc mode transmit power for lower battery use.
It also has MAC-based client access control, and on TW ROM, it would give hidden SSID option.
(sorry for posting this multiple times; just thought I'd share my finding on all the relevant threads.

FYI: For those of you that are having issues with VVM, are you using GoSMS? If so, it's been posted in the CM9 tips and tricks thread that GoSMS and Sprint VVM dont play nicely with one another.
Freeze or Uninstall GoSMS and your VM's should start trickling in!!!

I've been trying the "new" port of Cyanogenmod 9 (ICS), from the following topic:
[DEV][WIP] Ice Cream Sandwich Port (AOSP/CM9)
And after some weeks of dayly usage of build 4 with Update 1 i've decided to make a review of it.
The original post has a list of working and not working features, so first of all i'm going to comment and complete the ROM issues:
Bluetooth: It's not possible even to turn it on, so if you really use the bluetooth, forget it.
Wifi AP: The native tool doesn't work at all. The ROM includes the app Wifi-Tether, through this app you are able to turn on the Wifi-AP, other devices can see and connect but that's all, you can't actually use the internet .
Calendar: In the raw ROM it's not possible to syncronize your google calendar account, it can be solved by installing the GAPPS: link GAPPS...Thanks Halco (it also fixes a google+ app issue)
Camera(Photo): You can took photos but you can see them only after they are saved, through the gallery app, i mean the camera app has no live preview of the photo, only a black screen.
Camera(Video): You can't record videos period.
Videos: You can't watch videos, even youtube videos, youtube crashes when it attempts to reproduce the video.
Games: Forget every application which demands high processing .
Issues I've faced during usage:
Sometimes the phone crashes when you remove the power cable;
You cannot natively sync your facebook contacts (I've used this appfacebook contact-Sync.=P);
Sometimes all of a sudden the phone freezes, and you need to reebot it ;
It can take a bit to open the App Draw if you join the Apps and Widget Tabs, if you face this slowness go to Settings->Laucher->App Draw and uncheck Join with Apps;
The Data Usage (a native tool that keeps a track of your data usage) doesn't work;
Those were all the problems i had with this ROM, but all the other amazing Ice Cream Sandwich features are fully operative, so if you just like me don't use those missing tools go ahead it is a legendary SO with dozen of little features that make all the difference, all with an smooth interface...XD
Well this review is my attempt of a useful way to say thank you to the Developers...

i've just installed...soon I post my experience
actually you should use latest openFIMG update with arakmars G3mod kernel. it improves overall performance and data usage feature works with the new kernel.
general assumption: when doing a review you might want to say some positive stuff about the ROM as you only said which features don't work. overall performance is good on ICS though trebuchet launcher consumes a lot of CPU power (but it's version 0.1, so there will be improvements anyway). there's no word on battery life, too, which is quite good for ICS.

I like to add some more bugs,
- During the call when you press any key to interact with IVR the phone call goes to mute.
- Phone became very slow when you using is continuously.
A lot of faults but not much said about the features that are working so just thought I would go a bit further....
Widgets in appdraw
You can now view all widgets in the app draw without having to add them to the home screen, this is a staple feature of ICS and has been ported beautifully, it gives you a grid size in the draw too so you can see sizes.
Folders on homescreens
You can pile apps ontop of eachother to create folders so you can have all your messaging apps (whatsapp,fbmessenger, smmsmms) in one place. just click on it and it will open the folder to make your choice. it makes finding things quickly very simple, especially if you have alot of apps.
Apex Launcher
Apex launcher is a replacement launcher for trebuchet and helps run the new OS butter smooth. it also a little more customisable and user friendly and runs the best on this port. if you want fast and smooth, download it and push it to system/app for all functions
notification bar
the notification pull down bar on the port is alot more customisable than anything on GB or earlier OS's. add a weather option to it for a really sexy look.
Once installing the new gapps, they work absolutely fine, still a few syncing issues but all in all a decent attempt, the calendar especially is cleaner and more user friendly than previous builds.
extended power menu is working brilliantly, can go straight into download or recovery mode which i believe is now touch screen if i remember correctly... (please correct if wrong) and connecting to wifi is fast and reliable. There are many more things that really do show a huge amount of promise in this build, it is clear that given a little time and help with resources, these dev's are going to pull off what i personally didnt think possible. ICS ON G3!! D
Did some testing
I tested a view tastes of CM9. Was quite happy with the latest builds, however discovered a small issue that makes it a bit difficult to operate. I will describe it, hope this helps the developers.
First: Wifi, data is all working quite well, calender worked as I needed.
After flashing the rom CM9 systems work fine for about a day, after that when the phone goes into sleep you can wake it up, however the digitizer does not show any sign of life.
The screen however is fully functional, buttons operate.
After some random button pressing the digitizer migt start working, sometimes a reboot is the only solution.
However after a reboot sometimes it operates for half an hour and shows up problems with the digitizer again. I had this on both the G3 phones I owe (use one for testing).
Why it operates the first day after flashing without a problem is a little weird.
For the moment I'm back on Dutchmod 5.3
I lost the market (play store) after installing the G-apps given in the first post.
Looks like the G-apps from the above link is de-Odex.

I don't think gapps has odex and deodex apps
It is the ROM which is odexed and deodexed.
It works for icsforg3 build 4 so you can install it on any odex ROM

This is my first thread in XDA, this phone is my first smartphone or touchscreen phone I got it a year a go when It came out and this post will have all my knowledge about SGS2 battery saving tips I've got from this year.
Some settings might sound dumb, like why would you disable a core if you paid for two, and why would you want lower brightness if you have a SAMOLED+ screen which is brighter than SAMOLED HD, well those settings are optional and you have to find which ones will help you when you need battery badly for an emergency or something.
First let's make a list of all the apps that you need to use and what they will do, all the apps and tips are optional but if you use all of them you will have some amazing battery life!

This app will allow you to enable and disable media scanner whenever you want. Media scanner drains ur battery a lot specialy if you're using a JB ROM! I don't know if it'll be useful with GB/ICS because I only tested it on a JB ROM, by disabling media scanner you won't be able to see pictures or videos from your gallery but you're able to play music, use this when you really need to save battery and you're not gonna use gallery.

*Sound Search
*Voice dialer (Useless IMO..)
*SIM Toolkit (I don't know if this is safe to remove for all users but I had no problem)

*News & Weather
And you can disable other apps that you don't use, those are the ones I disabled.

This is my favorite, I don't know how useful it is but I hate to have apps I don't use running or on the background.
With this app you can disable the user and systemapps that auto start when you turn on your phone, they will start without any problem when you need them!
This app will give you more free ram! I don't know if the RAM on phones consume as much energy as PC RAM but I used it anyway..
The system apps I disabled are the following:
*Youtube
*Clock
*Email
*Download manager
*Media Storage (I guess you don't need this is you disabled media scanner already with the previous app)
*Gallery
Those are only the system apps, remember to disable YOUR apps that are always running on boot and you don't need them to be running (I only kept facebook, facebook messenger, nova launcher and whatsapp) I don't suggest you to disable many google apps, I think it gives problems when trying to connect to google servers (NOT SURE) disable them if you want and if it give you any problem just enable them again.

First do a google search and check if your carrier supports FD, my carrier doesn't support it so I disabled it and you can uninstall this app after disabling it if you want.

This app gets rid of the annoying ads, they consume battery because they use 3G to load and they're annoying anyway, just install it and after it downloads the host files and installs them you can uninstall this app if you want, if you start to get Ads again just install it again and update the host files and uninstall or you just can keep it and let it download the new host files.

Some users have better batterylife after matching their RIL with the current modem, you can uninstall this app after installing the right RIL but I think the RIL will keep changing everytime you flash a new ROM. This app is supposed to keep you away from RIL crashes, try it. and uninstall after using it.
Ok that's it now let's move to the tips, some of them might have you tired already but I'll put them for the new users.
#1 If you're not gonna browse, use facebook or any app that requieres 3G just disable it, I have 2G most of the time because I only use whatsapp and gtalk the most.
#2 Disable WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and Sync if you're not using it.
#3 Disable google now (It improves battery a lot according to some users)
#4 If you're lazy to control your brightness just set it automatic, I use the notification bar slide brightness from CM10 and I always have it really low.
#5 Try not to have too many root apps running on start up because SU makes the phone laggy when it tries to enable too many root apps.
#6 If you have a weather app set "refresh manualy"
#7 If for some reason after using all the apps from above you still have unwanted apps running just stop them manualy, I check running apps really often and stop them.
#8 Some people have better battery life with different modems, I always use stock modems so try different modems and check which one suits you better
#10 Don't let your phone charging overnight
#11 If you're REALLY need battery and you're on a trip only listening music with the screen off, set your CPU to 200 Mhz or 500 Mhz if you want, Music player is a light app but some music players keep going from 100-200 mhz to 800-1000 ..
#12 Try to enable the skip track with volume key from CM10/AOKP, this will save battery as you won't turn the screen on everytime you want to skip track and If you use the 200 Mhz max frequency you won't have to go through the lag to skip a track (If your galaxy lags a lot at 200 Mhz, some phones don't lag that much at that frequency)
#13 Disable BLN
#14 If you're not using the internet at all put flight mode
#15 Use dark or black wallpapers and themes, our SAMOLED+ Screen saves energy if you use black/dark themes/wallpapers
#16 If you have facebook and you need more battery try to log off your facebook and facebook messenger, it'll save you some battery (credits to Obagleyfreer for this tip)
Now let's get into the ROMs and Kernel subject.
I'm using Dorimanx 7.3 and I'm using JellyBam ROM at the moment but I change ROMs really often, I think JellyBam has vsync enabled so I guess a ROM without vsync and Dorimanx 7.3 will have better batterylife.
ExTweaks settings:
Easy.. Just go to recovery and go into specific kernel options and put Battery profile.. If you have ExTweaks plus you'll be able to change the profiles from the app and you'll see the Extreme_battery profile, enable it if you have ExTweaks plus.
After you set battery profile go to the CPU tab and put second core always off if you're just chatting and listening music you don't need both cores enabled.
Oh yeah and undervolt your CPU/GPU in ExTweaks, I have CPU UV -75.
If you did a charge cycle and your phone is at 100%, unplug it and go to the MISC tab on ExTweaks and Reset Fuel Chip and charge it again to 100%, I usualy reset it like 10 times after flashing a ROM, I unplug and reset and plug and like that a few times.. I'm not sure if it helps at all but I do it anyway.
**I think some users reported that slower charge gives better battery, in ExTweaks MISC tab theres an option for charging voltages, set the lowest AC/MISC:550mA USD:450mA (I haven't tested it but I will do it soon**

Ok after trying to discharge my phone using Max brightness, both cores enabled, screen on all time, PowerAMP on speakers all the time with max volume, 1.5Ghz, Extreme_Perfomance profile I got 3 hours 30 mins screen time.. I couldn't take a screenshot cause I took too long to take it and I had media disabled Now I'm going to try with my settings and post the results! Please if you tried my guide and got amazing battery life post a screenshot of your battery graph and screen on time or tell us the results!

What do you mean? Both cores will run on your Galaxy when you need them but the second core isn't enabled all the time, only when you need it.

Well i underclocked my device to 100-500 mhz with 2 cores running all the time... voltages as low a i can... gpu 40 66 100 mhz... the only thing i took from this thread is the screen filter,thanks for that! now i usually get 7 hours screen time 2 days running

Your welcome You should try the startup manager to get rid of the apps that auto start!
A handy tip to help battery life is remove Facebook app. It is a HUGE battery drain.
The best thing to do is to log onto the Facebook Mobile site then when you're on the homepage just save as a bookmark.
Now you can add the bookmark to your home screen as an icon.
It's just like Facebook app only faster, less bugs and battery friendly

One thing though: I would advice you NOT to fully drain your battery unless absolutely necessary. This will lower the full capacity of your battery. It's the same thing that happens to laptopbatteries. Many people let it run dry from time to time and this is one of the reasons people experience such a severe hit on laptop battery capacity over time.
This is also the reason why you phone will shut down before battery hits 0%. It's simply to spare the battery from degradation.

For my experience of coming from ICS to this new official JB release I9300XXDLJ4 BTU.
I liked to see this phone being up-to-date on latest OS and getting better performance (Keep the good work up, Samsung!), but there are still bugs and issue that are found in this rom.
Which bug/issue annoy you the most? and wish to get fix in the next update by Samsung?
1) Lag on opening Contact and Dialer - It is more noticeable in JB, since all other apps open faster but not these two which should get speed up or keep in memory.
2) Multi-task with games and apps - when open 1 game and then play another game at the same time it will close and reload the 1st game from the beginning no matter how many free memory you have. Not cool at all. [Fix: bestMultiTaskingFix 5 by mattiadj read this]
3) Wake up from home button problem - On screen turned off, when press the home button instead of going back to your active apps you use before screen off, it go to home screen. This is very annoying and it affect everyday use. [Fix: No wipe need. Go to Application List -> S-Voice ->Settings -> Keep "Open via the home key" ticked. ]
4) Slow wifi problem - The wifi speed is found to be slower in JB compared to ICS.
5) Gallery full screen problem - There is a black bar on top of Gallery's photo in full screen mode.
6) Battery drain - Some user have report battery drain on JB. It could be likely that it need a full charge after flash to get correct battery level. Some user report flash + full wipe could solve it. I will spend a few more days on test.

2) I loaded up dead trigger & riptide gp, both restart from the point I left them. No idea what I'm doing differently.

None of those. I would like copy and paste to understand the gaps inbetween sentences and paragraphs ideally don't need removing when copying large bodies of text. It was the same in ICS and I can't believe it's the same with stock JB.

I recently wiped my phone in order to test whether that made a difference. None, unfortunately! I'm a heavy phone user and I notice the little things. I have seen people here saying that multitasking works. YES, it does but with apps!!! Apps resume their state, most games do not! The same games used to resume their state on ICS but they don't on Jellybean. Also, Android System keeps consuming a LOT of my battery. I've got the same setup and the same games/apps on JB as I had on ICS. There's a huge difference! It's quite annoying.
Another thing they need to fix is they need to give the Video Player its own brightness controls. I know that the system controls are just a swipe away but why take away a good feature, Samsung?

It feel that it need to list all the bugs here, this help people finding/raising the solution of the same problem. One day, it could be all solved.
For the battery drain, I am waiting for more of battery stats.
Brightness controls on video player could well be another motion as an option. That would be a good feature to show off.
