Hi, i should have my Desire HD soon and am very excited.
I recently sold a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 (was rooted) and was wondering whether or not i should root my new phone and why...
The reason i rooted my previous smartphone was to make it faster but this one has three times the RAM etc. So would it be worth it now?
Also, does Juice Defender require root? It really helped my battery life with my Xperia X10...
Thank in advance!
I have one myself I have it rooted and installed with a custom rom called "Android Revolution HD™ 7.0.0" Great custom rom, would be a shame to not install ;D
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840040
Why not go for an ICS version? The IceColdSandwich is really nice, have a look at the android development forum of DHD.
While you are still waiting for your brand new DHD, why not prepare yourself with AAHK (advanced ace hack kit) and some good custom ROM. I would recomend you to try Android Revolution HD 6.3.2 (official base with Sense 3.0) or newer 7.0.0 (Sensation XL base with Sense 3.5).
Just don't wait too long to just rooted your phone and install custom ROM, cause once you have grip with good custom ROM like those cooked by mike1986 or JSLEnterprise you will never wanna go back to stock ROM with their bloated app.
I would second IceColdSandwich. Lord did a fantastic job and it has really made me appreciate my phone. When I got my Inspire (same difference as a dhd) it was really only because I needed a phone, this was free with ATT and I couldn't afford one of the "fancier" ones. Since going with an pics from, however, it feels like my phone is top of the line. Does everything I need it to do and now I can really care less if I have the newest released phone. There are still a few bugs, but Lord has been updating like mad recently so its only a matter of time before they get sorted out

Hey dude. Certainly yes to rooting it
As for Roms to use, a can recommend RCMIX3D Roms and Android Revolution Roms.
My experience of ICS Roms is not good.
But then I use my camera and camcorder loads, and they are the things that are not yet fully operational in any ICS rom.
ICS is coming to the DHD soon anyway, so properly cooked ICS Roms are not far away.
Best of luck dude.
Greg.

If you really need the root privileges then go for it otherwise you could wait a couple of months since ICS updates with sense 3.5 are going to be rolling for the DHD later this year. If you don't care about that update then get Ace hack kit, root it and I would recommend LeeDroid 5.1.1.
Good Luck!

Ok so here goes i'm thinking of working on a NAND ROM based on 2.3.1 (Gingerbread) Build: GRH78 FOR THE HTC HD2...but guess what...... i'm gonna try and throw HTC SENSE into the mix and see if i can get them to play nicely together....since this could take some time i just wanted to know if anyone is interested at all???? Just Post and ask if your interested......this ROM is going to based off ofMDJ's CyanogenMod 7 v. 2.3 with MDJ's Kernel: MDJ S10.3 OC (or whatever new Kernal MDJ releases between now and when i get this rom complete) and the Desire HD Sense including the Sense Camera...(THESE ARE MY GOALS FOR THIS ROM)I Will Be Posting Frequently Since I Will Need Testers to find all the little bugs that i miss....
( I WILL ONLY POST ROMS THAT I THINK ARE SAFE...BUT THERE IS THE CHANCE THAT IT STILL CAN BE BRICKED SO BY FLASHING MY ROM YOU KNOW THAT YOUR VOIDING YOUR WARRANTY AND I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR DEVICE )
EDIT: Im Gonna Try My Hardest to have a Version posted so everyone can play with it by 01/15/2011 - 01/16/2011....
EDIT: I just sent a message to cortulla....mainly if he has any tips or tricks that might help out with this build....01/14/2011
EDIT: Ok I'm sorry for not posting for so long i haven't forgot about you guys...i'm still working on this rom..its harder than anticipated...plus having the free time to do it gets tricky...work is having mandatory overtime since the iphone is being released on verizon...(SCARED MUCH AT&T????)..SO JUST WANTED TO UPDATE AND SAY I DIDN'T DITCH THIS PROJECT.......02/03/2011
Thanks Everyone and remember we couldn't do any of this if it wasn't for Google, Cyanogen, Cotulla & (DFT), MDJ, Markinus, gauner1986, danij3l, gpc, LeTama, Rajko and others...and if i forgot to mention you im sorry just yell at me and i'll be sure to add you to the list =-)....

That is so funny, I have been searching yesterday for something like this .
Count me in.
WTH, why not
We are always looking for something new to put in our phones
Good luck and count me in...

Also very interested...
And I'd like to be a beta tester.
Totally interested in this. Gingerbread has come along a great length in the last copuple of days. Latest stock release dated the 14th shows working lights and usb! Would be awsome to have sense built on top!
Please work on it man
Good luck. It's almost impossible; most of sense is dependant on the HTC framework and most libraries, which are in turn interdependent with the android version they run on (2.2). You pretty much have to replace the whole build with 2.2, which, in effect, makes the build a 2.2.
It would be easier to add to 2.2 the keyboard and animations from Gingerbread, along with the launcher. It's close, but it's not really 2.3 either.
Good luck anyway.
for me it's enough to have the desire hd cam on gingerbread. will it ever be possible to provide only the hd cam tool?

+1.
It's hardly possible to get sense rosie.apk (the launcher) working on stock android... (afaik nobody has done it to date)
plus I bet its impossible to do it on a different android version.
Yet I would be interested.

Why?
Use Camera 360 or a similar app. They do the same (may look worse but who cares?)
(maybe no facial recognition - yet do you really need that?)
it seems to me that Gingerbread mostly enhanced aosp anyways, it tweaked the UI and didn't really have that many enhancements.
If you could just port the Gingerbread keyboard, icon set, Nexus S LWPs, and the screen-off animation to a Sense build then you basically have it.
(may look worse but who cares?)

yep, and that's exactly what i want: a good looking camera app. technically i'm satisfied with the gingerbread cam, but it looks awful in compare to hd cam app...
I'm dreaming of it !!!
Bring it on!
I'd love to give sense a try on Gingerbread!
2.2 Sense ?
Sense HD would be cool but I imagine more work
I'll look forward to it !
+1 Beta Tester
sure man it will be revolutionary start .... good luck ...
Absolutely impossible. You need a HTC leaked ruu I tell you that. Unless you are a fremework wiz. If you are, 10-90 chance. Good luck. You may make history with it.

Dude... seriously... which beer is the best? what's the best colour? What's the best food?
etc. etc. etc.
It is ALL a matter of taste. You need to read people's feedback in each thread, decide which seems best to you, then try a few. The happiest people on this forum, are the ones that put the work in at the beginning, and find a ROM they like.
If you know what you're after, then maybe with a little tweaking of the question, you'll get some help.
Sense or not?
Which base do you prefer? EVO, Nexus, Desire HD.....
Do you want a stock ROM (hardly changed from original base), or one that's themed.
There's so many variables, this question is obsolete..... Do yourself a favour and do some research, you won't regret it.
I had been using Cotulla's LEO stock desire ROM since 30 Dec...quite fast and found no bugs at all...
Since there are so many more NAND builds recently, I would like to seek for some recommendations for new ROM...
My only requirement is sense build with stock theme
Thanks!

Projection's build is close to Stock desire that you are using, it has bug fixes and changes, is stable, and works well.
Again, backup your stuff with titanium, then go flash around.... you'll find something you like.
Nearly ALL builds have screenshots, so you can see what it'll look like before you try it.
well thanks guys...well i thought i was specific enough...my only requirements are speedy, fast rom...all features working.....nothing else matters ...just those 2 features i mention...and um ur also right about doing ur reasearch...thats y i even gave 2 examples MDJ Revolution HD and JDMS. do u guys know of any rom thats like the fastest on the hd2 with all the features working?.....i want to run psx4droid...hope fully it will run good on the rom u guys recommend.
In terms of speed, a bare android (non sense) will likely be the fastest (IMO more stable as well). The desire HD builds are the most feature-laden but also tend to be slower, and the desire and desire z fall in between the two. In terms of speed, the ranking is vanilla is fastest, then desire, desire z, then desire HD (again, IMO), and vice versa in terms of features.
At this point, I believe it is a pretty moot point to talk about "everything working," because each of these different types all have several threads with everything except wireless tether( most don't have it) and 720p recording (none have this feature).
I recommend browsing each thread and finding something that is visually appealing and trying it. If it gives you problems move on to the next one.
Just make sure to read and search before posting questions or bugs.

what are the main benefits or features of updating htc desire hd to gingerbread when it comes out,, or gingerbread is just a minor update

Check the dev forums of the DHD, theres a thread called android revolution 4.0 bets, you ahve some screenshots there. I flashed the beta, and although it has several issues, they really upped sense in a good way
I've tried the Android Revolution gingerbread.. although its beta but so far so good.. some additional function added for example the proxy support..
i'm on leedroid beta GB, its already fully functional, just had a little need of tweak here and there.
its good upgrade though!
Have used Android revolution gingerbread for two days, every thing looks good so far.
Read this and you will figure it out:

I really like CM7, but I would like a good Rom that has SenseUI. anyone know of one? i'd like it to be stable and most stuff working.
Orange Sense. HTC Sense, very fast and stable. Available in the development forum.
I have a question...pardon my ignorance on the matter...
What exactly are "earmarks" of a senseUI? I used my stock glacier rom until only last week, and now am using CM7/RC4, and I fail to see the UI differences. This surprised me because I see people have some pretty strong feelings for or against senseUI compared to Android stock UI.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
they are two different rom types, the sense framework takes up more space, but it is really fancy with the clock that's the only reason i want it.
You want the old fashioned 1980s flip clock that you see in most of the Mytouch 4G print ads? I didn't even realize that was now not an option...
I cannot imagine you can't use it though. Just review all the different home launchers... There had got to be one that will let you use this clock.

You don't see the difference between Sense and the standard Android UI?
Also, the stock MT4G ROM is not real Sense. It's a T-Mobile customized version that isn't near as attractive. "Real" Sense is much more attractive.

Not really, and I am usually big on bells and whistles too. I think I may go back to sense (a modded 2.3 rom). Are there any you (or anyone with an opinion) suggest I try out first?

the modded 2.3 ones aren't stable i don't think, that's why im asking is there one lol. most have issues running somethings like bluetooth or camera.
Evil's 4G-HD Desire HD rom. Pair it with the latest Faux Sense kernel and it will fly! Everything works!

The two posts above this one pretty much sums it up.
Gingerbread/Sense 2.1 ROMs aren't fully functional or stable yet.
If you want Sense, try eViL's Desire HD port. Link is in my sig.

Great.. will try it out. The only things I have noticed that are different are small niceties, which may have nothing to do with sense and cm7. For example, in the glacier's stock rom, I loved that you could be on the phone and simply set it on a table rear side up, and haptics would turn on the speakerphone. It doesn't sound like much but small things like this add up and overall gave me a better experience.
Can I ask why faux and others at cyanogen are able to create 4 release candidates for their 2.3 rom, yet a stable 2.3 sense rom is still weeks away? Is this because of the morons over at HTC, who don't understand what open source means and won't release their code?

Pretty much. We'll of course never have the source code to Sense, but a good dump from a similar phone can be ported. The problem is, the only Gingerbread/Sense 2.1 dump we have is from the Incredible S, and despite the similarities in hardware, the kernel isn't directly compatible. It sounds like until we get a better starting point, those ROMs will be buggy and missing features.

By dump do you mean the actual code? And so is motorola (or whoever is behind the incredible...cannot recall at the moment) releasing their code? Because if you are just doing a memory dump and doing some RE to get the actual code, I would ask why that can't be done with the glacier.
And as long you have something a little better than binary, I would think you could get some reasonable starting point from the glacier stock. I am not really skilled in the art as of yet so consider me mostly speaking out of my ass. But I am quite interested. Maybe I will try to get the sense code for you . I mean there has to be a few draft versions in some server not locked up tight.
Oh..and lastly, so evil's rom is a quasi 2.3 (not in substance) with the kernel being 2.2 just tricked out?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
At this point, I don't think I know much more about this than you. I know a dump is much like the ROMs that we flash to our phones...it's the phones entire OS and software package which can then be ported to other phones (assume their of the same manufacturer and are somewhat similar). As you know, the Desire HD is nearly identical to the Glacier (minus the screen) so a dump from it can be easily ported to our phones, and after some "devving", will run perfectly on the MT4G. As far as binaries and code, that's all way beyond me. An actual dev could give you a lot more detailed info.
I asked this earlier and I think it just got lost... but in regard to a sense rom, is evil's rom like a "quasi" 2.3 (has the look but not the substance of gingerbread) with a 2.2.1 kernel that's just tricked out, updated, etc.?
I am not familiar with kernels being separate from the rom. Why is this done? I am sure the install is not too difficult (considering what I have been through with CM7), but is there a guide here, our should I just comb the threads for an installation overview for the sense roms/kernels?
________
Edit: I started reading the thread for evil's rom.. and for now, I think I might go back to stock, and upgrade the kernel. (unless there are really no problems worth the Z port, like ffc or wifi issues). So with that said, which kernel is best for the HD sense stock rom (or which stock rom out there has been enhanced the best with everything still functional)? I know there aren't that many different upgraded stock roms/kernels, but of the ones I found, they seem the same.
Sorry to makes this long but I ask this because I see people with just the stock plus an upgraded kernel, but then also, there is the Orange Glacier which is an enhanced stock rom.... Wouldn't those two packages be virtually identical?
Or am I just letting this kernel factor confuse me?
----------------
Forget it.... I just spent 3 hours in the dev threads.... The nomenclature mess was making my eyes bleed... Orange Glacier, Iced Glacier, Royal Ginger, Royal Mint, Royal Jelly, KY Jelly... %^$#^
So... I retract my earlier decision and I am going to stay on the bleeding edge with CM7... F*ck it if I can't do progressive scan video or get reply notifications to MMS messages sent to CDMA networks!!*
*I just made those two things up... It means to say that the bugs that do exist in CM7 are very arcane and minor... But I am an easy sell so tomorrow I will probably want to go back to sense.

Hello together,
well I have a new phone now (MOTO Defy). I want to give the GT540 to my brohter. He isn't that interested in technical stuff and it will be his first Android phone. So I want to ask you what you think is the best Rom for him?
He don't need that much features, but a stable running rom, with good battery and not that much preinstalled apps. Also it would be very good, if there is not that much on the todo-list of this rom, because I think he don't like to update the Rom "every week".
At the moment I'm really looking forward to airbus360's Froyo Optimum v7.0. I think it should be very stable, has a easy to use UI (Tochwiz looking Launcher) and seems to be nearly final.
What to you think or suggest?
airbus's froyo optimum will be the best choice for that ;D

Well, I too am waiting for froyo optimum, but honestly.I recommend Eleganceswift or Greendroid 2.1 is just the most fastest, stable and lasting os(for now) on our devices oh and great choiche taking the Defy that fathermucker will last

Okay, now after Froyo Optimum v7.0 has not been released and also finding some bugs in current version I tried EleganceSwift 5.0. And this ROM really rocks! Look great, is very fast and the UI is easy to use.
I think NoDze is right about suggesting 2.1 Roms for this purpose.
