Unable to restore stock recovery, what am i doing wrong??? - Desire HD General

I've tried different tools and methods after searching this forum but have been unable to restore the stock recovery.
History: I was on a custom rom (Leedroid). I restored it to stock with a nandroid backup downloaded from here. It was a backup of the service provider I originally got the phone from. I returned it to the radio it came with and I've also set radio and eng on, updated the CID to what I think was the right one and unrooted the phone.
After that, I've tried restoring the stock recovery, but it still shows up as clockworkmod.
When attempting the above with fastboot, it displays that is sends the file, tries to write and then displays a message saying Signature Verification failed?
I've tried initiating the OTA update, but after it powers down and tries to install, I end up getting that triangle with an esclamation mark. Also tried to rename the OTA update to update.zip and start it from clockworkmod and that doesn't work either.
What am I doing wrong?

Have a search in the development thread for the appropriate RUU for your provider and run that, it will put you back completely to stock ie. Recovery/ Splash screens / rom / radio and S-ON

I don't think there is an RUU available as I've tried searching. I could only find a backup. here is the link to the post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19651022&postcount=44
I assume he used clockworkmod to backup so it's a part of it now.

if I understand correctly you are now S-ON? If so there's your problem that is stopping the overwriting of the recovery partition, If I was you I'd try one of the WWE RUUs found here, although you may have an issue with the CID interfering if you do try using AAHK to root and S-OFF then try the RUU

update radio on HTC Dream

I rooted my phone using the "one click" root method (from standard Rogers 1.5 firmware) (http://zenthought.org/system/files/asset/2/flashrec-1.1.1-20090908.apk) and then updated to the latest radio:
•2.22.19.26I
•Baseband Version: 62.50S.20.17H_2.22.19.26I
•http://sapphire-port-dream.googlecode.com/files/ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip
I initiall got the box with the arrow then the phone continued to the Rogers boot screen and has been stuck there for 20 minutes at least! So i took out the battery and turned it back on again and it get stuck on the Rogers screen still!
Have I bricked it!?! I thought you can only brick it when you update the SPL ... all I did was update the radio. Please HELP!
Thanks in advance.
Do you have a RA or Cyan recovery?
If so, try booting into it. You know, Home+Power.
yes when i did the "one step" root, it made a recovery image ... but when I press home+power it still sits on the Rogers screen!
the power+camera button combination doesn't work either.

If it helps I was following the instructions step by step from: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/howtos/howto_hack_your_android_g1_phone?page=0,2
If you have a Rogers Dream you should be following the guide here:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_Rogers_Dream_EBI1_to_CyanogenMod
You have a radio that is incompatible with your rom and recovery. You should be able to fix this by just flashing the radio for rogers phone again.
Boot into fastboot on your phone using camera and power on and check what SPL you have (hboot 1.33.00??).
according to that guide I bricked my phone:
2.Be very careful of any upgrade or mod instructions that require you to install an HTC "Recovery" zip/image, a replacement radio, or anything that might cause a difference of versions thereby bricking your phone.
eg: you currently have an EBI1 system and recovery image. If you boot an EBI0 radio image you will no longer be able to boot your phone.

That guide should really say "thereby possibly bricking your phone". I will make the change. If you want me to try to help you fix your phone I can but you will need to tell me what version your spl is.
I would appreciate your help! except that I can't boot into recovery mode/fast boot mode or any other mode, therefore can't check spl version.
I knew that you wouldn't be able to get into recovery but I thought you would still be able to get into fastboot. You can also try holding back while powering on. Without getting into one of these modes I'm afraid there's not much we can do.
Its sorta a long shot but you could try this: (its for the magic but its worth a shot as a last resort)

FLASH RADIO FIRST THEN FLASH SPL. LOOK BELOW FOR INSTRUCTIONS.
you are supposed to update radio and spl. you cannot choose one. first flash radio and when it says to reboot, reboot and it will reboot back into recovery when done. then flash the spl. same steps as above. then wipe data, wipe ext file system, then repair ext. after that flash the rom again. the radio and the spl is from the same site you used.
hope this helped. you should do research before flashing anything. i'm glad i did before flashing a new radio and spl. also once you get sorted out, flash the same recovery image i have (in signature) and make a nandroid backup for cyanogen or a donut rom and make a bart backup for hero rom (i recommend MLIGN 3.2B but switch to the Hero 2.1 ROM when they fix everthing) so you can switch those out. it is safe and I did it a lot of times.
I really want to get 1.6 on my device, (Rogers Dream) but I really don't want to flash the SPL, because if I brick that I have to buy a totally new Dream, no warranty.
What to do!
edit: I booted with camera and power and it says hboot is 1.33.0009, does this mean I don't have to risk bricking when I root? The tutorial is for 1.33.0010.

1) This is for ROGERS Dreams, they use different radios and SPLs to regular HTC Dreams/G1's. So your instructions would brick ROGERS Dreams.
2) You don't have to flash the radio and SPL at the same time. They are independant, however the 1.33.2005 requires the 26i radio. If you're on 1.1 and you upgrade to a 1.5/1.6 ROM you should update the radio, but there's no reason to change the SPL from stock unless you want to flash builds the require extra space in the NAND.
if im using the dwang 1.13 flash, will the sapphire radio update work with the g1? is it compatible?
sorry what does updating the radio do for you?

[Q] PC36IMG.zip and HBOOT version

I successfully rooted my phone but after trying to get Cyanogen running view ROM Manager, really hosed things.
I HAD made a nandbackup that I had successfully rested to, but doing so now gives an error.
My situation is that when I try to start from scratch, I can't--resetting the phone to factory settings doesn't work either. I've followed the directions here:
How to start over: Fully rooted stock 1.47.651.1 in one shot (no adb!)
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
and here:
[TUTORIAL] How To Root The HTC EVO ~ Part-1 \0/
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762
But the issue seems to be that whenever I get into the Bootloader, the PC36IMG.zip file isn't being found. I've uncompressed it to ensure its not corrupt.
When the boot loader comes up, it's version is HBOOT-0.76.2000, and even though I'm following the directions from the 1st link above, the PC36IMG.zip file just doesn't get found and I'm in an endless world in the bootloader.
How can I figure out what I need to do to get my Evo working again?

Did you make sure you have the PC36IMG.zip is on the root of your sd card?
Also, you can just boot into recovery from hboot and just flash your custom rom again to get out of it.

When I boot into Recovery and get taken to ClockworkMod and try to do a recover of the 1st (funtioning) Nand backup I made, the whole backup restores in ClockworkMod only, but when I reboot, I get sent to the bootloader and can't get out of it--which is my original problem.

Clockworkmod does not work!!!

I'm really at a stage now where i wanna just throw my htc desire hd at the wall!!!! I am trying to just install a custom firmware, not much to ask considering the mammoth amount of hacking you have to do to even downgrade the firmware. I have done absolutley everything that needs to be done to root this device, i have downgraded the firmware i have rooted it, switched off eng s-off and radio s-off i have full root acess with terminal emulator, i put the update zip on the sd card it says something about installation invalid thats because first time i did not disable radio s-off then it went slightly further but then said some other error i have tried everything, i tried rom manager and selected reboot in recovery mode but now it just makes the phone freeze on the htc boot screen when selecting recovery from the boot menu, can someone please please help, how hard can it be just to install coredroids firmware, why can't it just be as easy as the pd98img firmware
help much apprieciated
clockworkmod recovery works fine. Something has just gone wrong with your installation.
To avoid complications later on, you haven't "switched off ENG S_OFF" you've made made S-ON S-OFF and added ENG S-OFF.
You talk about update.zip, is this for a ROM (CoreDroid?)? Which ROM? Did it tell you to rename it to update.zip? If a ROM then it had nothing to do with Radio S-OFF as you only need that for flashing radio.img files and if it was a radio you were trying to push you should use fastboot not recovery. Are you using the right version of recovery (it's very specific about the version required)?
When everything has been installed correctly and instructions followed it is VERY easy to install coredroid's ROM.
hi thanks for the reply, i just follwed the instructions for installing a custom rom as it asks u to chang it to s-off but the guide also says you need to install the update.zip for clockworkmod to get to choose the custom flash rom you want to use but all i get when i select update.zip from the recovery menu is e:signature verification failed installation aborted
Ok, they don't make it very clear do they?
Have you got ROM Manager installed?
Have you got clockworkmod recovery installed? If so what version is it. If not then use ROM Manager to flash it and flash 2.5.1.3 version (as that what it says).
Get the above. Then let me know.
hi mate its version 4.2.0.2 if i select flash clockworkmod recovery it completly causes the recovery menu in bootloader to just hang on the htc startup screen

Sorry, I meant recovery version but it looks like you still need to do that.
In that case push the recovery.img file (grab from the Coredroid thread) using fastboot.
Normally issues are because people miss things but you've confirmed you have ENG S-OFF, Radio S-OFF and root.
ok i tried running this image file in fastboot from this thread http://android.modaco.com/content/z...led-tft-30-nov-2-5-1-3-clockworkmod-recovery/
its written ok but when i select recovery from bootloader it just hangs on the htc startup screen grrr this is just impossible.
That's not for the desire HD.
Grab a 3.x.x.x version from clockwork 3.0.2.8 thread and try that (you can downgrade easily once we got something working).

Verified, ran August GB RUU and phone re-rooted

Okay I verified that if you have s-off you will be able to get root back on your phone if you run the RUU.
As expected the RUU did unroot my phone but it didn't touch s-off. So I downloaded CWM 3.0.0.8 from dougpiston.com and changed it to PB31IMG.zip (this has to be a flashable zip file to work) and it loaded from hboot no problem. I then downloaded the latest superuser app using ROM Manager, version 2.3.6.3 efgh, older versions will not work, and just flashed it through recovery. Superuser does not need to be renamed update.zip you can just leave the name as is and select let me choose zip from sdcard and it installs just fine.
Took a while for me to get superuser running again as I had an older version and I could only find the newest version in ROM Manager.

Thanks to you both. I didn't even click on the Download ROM because it's premium and I'm still getting my feet wet with the whole root thing. I'm off to try the GB RUU w/radio and then re-root.
What if you have s-on?
You can only re-root if you have s-off. S-on blocks you from replacing the stock recovery with a custom recovery and blocks the installation of superuser into the system folder.
Eventually the Unrevoked team will come up with a new way to root phones but this most likely won't happen till the OTA actually starts to drop and people report how they lost root. And then who knows how long it will take them to do it. Could be a few days to a few months.

I ran the RUU with all expectations of not being able to re-root my phone just so I could test if the OTA would change the security settings on my phone. I also still wasn't sure if I could even get root back if it was still s-off so I was willing to experiment with knowing full well what could happen. From past experience with the Eris and losing root for about 3 months you have to flash these leaks with all expectations that it will break your phone and not sweat it too much if it does as eventually someone will find a fix.

You're absolutely right. I have no doubt in my mind someone will come up with a way to root 2.3 on the INC
Alright, I've got s-off, downloaded the superuser 2.3.6.3 efgh app from the ROM manager butttt... now what? I've tried to boot into recovery but I just get an icon of a phone with an exclamation mark inside of a triangle, which I'm assuming isn't good.
Flash clockworkmod recovery first, then the superuser zip.
I tried that but it gives me an error saying: "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!".
If you flashed the GB RUU and lost root and/or s-off.
Someone correct me please if I'm wrong but couldn't you download the froyo RUU and load it then root and s-off?

How are you trying to flash it? I'd recommend getting the 3.0.0.7 (AMOLED) or 3.0.0.8 (SLCD) recovery from www.dougpiston.com. Flash in hboot. Or is that how you're doing it?

The Eris had a manual method (race method) for rooting the phone but I could never find one posted for the Inc. It involved having the phone connected to a pc with adb running and then taking out the sdcard and rebooting, at a certain point of the boot process you counted to 4 and then pushed the sdcard back in. If you did it correctly adb was able to connect to the phone and you could slip a custom recovery and su in. It was rather complicated and only a handful of people ever did it correctly myself included and it was eventually replaced by a one-click method. The one-click method still pretty much does the same thing you just don't have to manually remove the sdcard or have the phone connected to a pc. In some ways the Eris has a lot more support from its community than the Inc does probably because it was Verizons first android phone.

I second this it has to be a flashable version (contains android-info text file + the recovery image) to work. I used the 3.0.0.8 file from doug pistons website which is already to go just needs to be renamed PB31IMG.zip and make sure it isn't being named PB31IMG.zip.zip as file extensions can be hidden especially if you are renaming it on a pc. I downloaded it directly to my phone and renamed it there so the extension wasn't hidden.

I beleive that is becasue you stil have the stock recovery? Did you flash the clockwork recovery from dougpiston.com?
I flashed the clockwork mod recovery 3.0.0.7 from dougpiston via hboot.
I tried several different ways to boot into recovery to flash the superuser app but it isn't working. When I try to do it from the clockword mod app it says the same error: "An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!".
I tried to manually download the superuser .zip and boot into recovery from the hboot menu, but it still gave me that same phone icon with the exclamation mark and triangle and then nothing.

First thing are you getting into recovery from the hboot menu? And you can't get into recovery from ROM Manager because you need superuser installed to do it that way. It still sounds to me like you don't have ClockworkMod Recovery installed. Maybe only version 3.0.0.8 works I'm not sure but that version is for both amoled and SLCD screens. So either try reflashing your copy of 3.0.0.7 or try flashing 3.0.0.8. I do think I had to flash the recovery a couple times to get it to stick.

Downgrade to HBOOT from 1.02.0000 to 0.52.0000

Hi, everyone who have been waiting for a way to downgrade their HBOOT so that they can get S-OFF, cause they upgraded to the Official RUU Rom... I think I found a solution for you!
Also give you permanent ClockWork Recovery!
I haven't test it on any other Slide, cause I have only one. So, sorry if it didn't work for you.
Here is what I did, in case you're wondering, I downloaded the Official RUU from HTC Support website, extracted the 'rom.zip' file from Windows Temp folder that it creates, replaced the newer 1.02 HBOOT with 0.52 HBOOT, that I got from 'ESPRIMG.zip' (the Stock rom).
And also replaced the recovery.img with ClockWork Recovery img file.
Then I just renamed the 'rom.zip' file to 'ESPRIMG.zip'
Put it in the root of my memory card, powered off, rebooted into BOOTLOADER, and it detected the file and asked me if I wanted to update, I chose YES, and it went on without a hitch. Next thing I knew, I had 0.52.0000 HBOOT, with permanent ClockWork Recovery(so I dont have to use 'update.zip' anymore), and also the Official Latest 2.15.531.3 unmodified rom, (I like stock Espresso, that's why I bought it ) but you will LOSE ROOT but SuperOneClick method works for me to gain root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Method:
1. Download this 'ESPRIMG.zip' file - http://www.mediafire.com/file/cuemg74en7kk0a3/ESPRIMG.zip
2. copy/paste it to your memory card, in the root, not on any folder.
3. Make sure your card formatted to FAT32 file system, or it won't detect it.
4. Do a Nandroid BACKUP, if you can, cause I don't know if this will work for you. But it will wipe all your data and setting. SO BACKUP!
5. First you need to wipe data and factory setting, and wipe cache and wipe davlik cache (Otherwise it bootlooped for me). So boot into recovery first!
You can do that by going into BOOTLOADER first then selecting Recovery ( for that remove memory card from mobile or else it will start update) or if you have ROM Manager then you can use that to reboot into Recovery, any recovery will do stock or clockwork.
6. Ok, so after Wiping from recovery. PULL battery, then insert back the memory card with ESPRIMG.zip file on it. Reboot into BOOTLOADER, and apply the update.
It should do a reboot automatically to downgrade the HBOOT.
You will see the change if it worked. After applying the update, reboot phone normally.
And if all done correctly, you should have 0.52.0000 HBOOT, and also a permanent ClockWork Recovery. Now you can root by using SuperOneClick method. And also get S-OFF (I didn't need it, cause I have permanent S-OFF! , at least that's how I explain it)
Im guessing it worked for me because I have a factory unlocked S-OFF HBOOT from HTC. Because, to try this out first, I updated my phone via the OFFICIAL RUU from HTC Support Website and it showed S-OFF on my 1.02.0000 HBOOT.
Then I tried this method and it did downgrade my HBOOT and I still had S-OFF without doing the AlphaREV method.
So I guess I have a kind of permanent S-OFF??! :S :?
Hit thanks if it helped.
I am no developer but I am learning
Any feedback would be appreciated.
And yes, my major is CS and I LOVE IT!
any one test this yet?
If i try this and it does not downgrade my HBOOT will my phone be bricked? Will I lose root? I would love to try, but would like a little certainty.....

I don't think that you phone will be bricked, it would just not downgrade it but the HBOOT will remain. Yes you will lose root, but that can be gained easily by SuperOneClick Root Method.
I not certain myself about the brick. Flash at your own risk.

I'll be trying it once the download finishes for me. I'll update you guys on whether or not it worked for me.
I'm using a full stock phone btw, factory reset and blank sdcard as well. Hopefully this works for me.
UPDATE:
Looks like this was a dud.
I applied the update 3 times to my phone, but my Hboot still didn't downgrade. It's still on 1.02.0000. Also didn't flash the permanent Clockwork Recovery that we were hoping for either.
I'm guessing your permanent s-off is what let you use this successfully. So for anyone who has S-OFF already this would probably work fine.
On the plus side, it didn't brick me =)
