For those of you who like the gingerbread recent app list, I FOUND SOMETHING SIMILAR!
Pull out keyboard and hit FN TAB! Enjoy!!!
Note: Acts very similar to the windows version of alt tab.
Edit: Clarity, this is in Ice Cream Sandwich, where we normally do NOT have this menu while holding home
Also the picture from taz on second page:

Hmm maybe only certain ROMs have it implemented! I'm on Taz's 1.1 and as soon as I get a hold of a camera or figure out how to take a Screen Shot of it while it's happening (doesn't work the conventional way sadly) I'll upload what it looks like

Obviously, but in ICS its completely different. You can only access this by using the keyboard. Its in portrait because I was using an app developed by scumbags who don't support landscape mode

Actually the code is still in ICS I think. If you check the forums Themes and Apps, second page for a post by shadow android, there is a post concerning using the search button for ICS task switcher. The code still in the android policy jar uses the old switcher unless you change it in PhoneWindowManager.
EDIT: Point being, if you change the keylayout files without changing the code in that file, you still get the GB app switcher.

nice dude!
that's great feature, didn't know about it before. however, for me it seems to work only with right fn and tab, but that's good. if you keep fn pressed and only click tab, you get real alt-tab-like behaviour like in windows perfect for keyboard multitasking
It works

Yes, on ICS the multitask feature is very different. Holding home gives you the picture in the 2nd post, whereas fn and tab gives the old gingerbread-looking one.
And nice taz I think you should throw a feature in that holding search gives that menu or something (making it an option if you can) for those people who prefer the old one

Basically... I just want some basic information on a glance.. in PART OF THE SCREEN.
ie unread email/sms headers, weather info, stock info, etc in just a small portion of the screen.. say the bottom 1.5" of the screen rather than powering up the entire screen.. since these are hardly 4-5 lines.. should conserve battery life..
also it can be made something like a ticker as in continuum.
something like this
Code:
__________________________ _____________

All BLACK
(saves battery)

|---------------------------------------| |
Gmail(10) 23F
Andy rubin> 'Droid Rocks'
|Enya-Sadness 1:42/3:53 <-||-> | |
GOOG 575.25 (+25) AAPL 320 (+1.5)
Wikileaks wreack havoc: AP
_______________________________________
Is this even doable? ie either power off part ofthe screen and display on part of it.. or just put a black lockscreen background with some data displayed in part of it.
Just an idea..you can make millions of this.. :>

I would definitely pay for this app to replace my lock screen. It works for our SAMOLED screen because black screen doesn't draw any power.
Samsung continuum has this feature built-in. Does it with a second 'ticker' screen.

yea but its a separate lcd/amoled screen iguess not a continuous screen...
since our samoleds are 0 power consumption they will greatly benefit from this feature..
I m sure 90% of the times, thats all we need th screen for...chking emails, sms, news, weather.
there shud be a way to use part of the screen for basic functionality ie phone(how big a dialer u need.. type in few characters of the name, select the name hit dial), scroll thru emails, sms, n may be reply from there too..
on top of all this.. the side power button is a major annoyance for me.. not sure how many ppl feel the same way.. everytime i try to press is..the slider keeps sliding and i cant get to press the button. .. is there a way to just hit the screen or some other button to power on the screen..

Okay, we got some more info on that screen. The entire front of the phone is one huge four-inch screen, with the Android buttons more or less painted over the lower third -- the screen lights up underneath them in white to illuminate them. Samsung says it's just easier for marketing purposes to say it's two screens, but that they're selectively turning on the bottom portion of the display for the ticker.

I bet you do a lot of that one handed typing don't you.
UltraKeyboard is my keyboard of choice. Worth the couple bucks. Can fully theme it how you want it, including key size and spacing, has a ton, a ton, of features, and a swype like function that you can train and set pause parameters on. I highly recommend it.
Swiftkey is good too, if I could theme it I would probably use that all the time.
I'm using swiftkey, the only thing that I don't like that's it's bright, I would rather have a darker keyboard.
Smartkeyboard why? Because it's smart duhh

Hey!
I thought of a concept that will be hard to achieve, but awesome if it works.
This is it: The OS acts as if there are two screens that you can control independently. This way you can do things like editing a file while looking thing up on the internet. I realize this probably would not work, and in terms of technology I'm kind of a noob, but this is just an idea that would be cool and not actually anything I am working on.

I know of the Sony Tablet P, but I meant that it would be something that any Android phone with enough power could use. But thanks anyway!
If you split the screen in two, don't you think the screens would be way too small anyway? I mean it is a good idea, but who really does anything majorly needing that on their phone?
Maybe if you got the Kyocera Echo's source you could trick the display into doing it
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/13/kyocera-echo-review/
But it wouldn't be practical on a phone, maybe on a tablet
OP, I think its a great idea!
You would have two 6.25 cm (2.5") 427x480 (or 480 minus a few pixel rows for the status bar) app windows.
It probably could be implemented, but I doubt it will

This is just for multitasking though. The DS was a good idea, but the real innovation was the touch screen - not the two screens.
This might or might not be useful. I thought of it because to me it seems useful when looking things up or something. And yes, the screens might be small. But I do not think they will be too small.
There's.a Nokia dual screen check it on youtube I def was not impressed
Sent from my R800a using XDA App
I would find this useful because you can have your music player on the left/bottom of the screen, and have any other app on the other half of the screen. That way you wont have to change constantly between apps so in other words it is great for multitasking.
Imigine that you can swipe the bar between the two apps to make one bigger or smaller... that would be nice...
EDIT: Heard about Cornerstone? It does something very similar:

i have always like MIUI roms, really a pity that launcher has no landscape mode, an inherent 'characteristic' of MIUI roms.
i dont really mind this when using MIUI on phones as they are being used mostly in portrait (at least for me).
however, since my primary use of TP is for reading and usually in landscape mode, i am sorely missing a rotatable launcher, pity really ...

I'm no dev, and I don't like to be a negative nelly, but you're trying to take a piece from Sense UI and make it work in AOS/KP. Two very different beasts making it a tough challenge to pull off right. It would be nice, but it probably won't happen.
I know this isn't what you asked for, but since what you asked for is pretty unlikely to happen, I thought I'd offer this as an alternative.
I use Swiftkey-3 as my keyboard, and it is a fantastic keyboard aside from the fact that it has an option for showing arrows.
Here is a screenshot just so you know what it looks like.
It might get you what you want in a very easy way, easier than trying to flash a sense keyboard over an aosp rom.
Plus it has several themes which look nice. This one looks really good with ICS I think.

What version of Swiftkey ? I have v1.1.91 ... just got it from the Amazon store 1-2 days ago. I see no option for turning on arrows, nor does mine even look like that. That looks like a stock Android keyboard while mine is rather HTC-Sense-looking (larger buttons, light gray color, etc).

You have to go to options, and the theme section. Different themes will change the color. Also the arrow option is in the theme section.
Your version is old, it may not have all of that. I am using 3.0.4.343
I bought it back on the old version and I upgraded for free, but I bought it on the google market, not sure how amazon handles updates like that.
My version is 2 upgrades newer than yours I think. First there was your version, SwiftKey, then Swiftkey-X then Swiftkey-3.
Yeah, that's the problem. I actually got it for free from Amazon. Later, it appeared that maybe Swiftkey pulled the app 'cause you couldn't update it. Seems that the version after mine was Swiftkey-X and they weren't doing upgrades between "major" versions.

Swiftkey x has the beta before they made it Swiftkey 3. I used it for a while and I actually bought Swiftkey 3 when they finalized it because Swiftkey x was good and now I don't use Swiftkey because it got really sole for some reason.

That stinks. But I think it's only a few bucks on the Google Market, so it might be worth it to you.
Get SwiftKey-3 if you do, not X.

Just looked on the Play Store and there is a free version that is fully functional but only good for one month.
Might help you decide if it's worth the $$ to you.
i dont really see why u would want the arrow keys i mean whats the point. what do u use them for.

I like them. It makes for easy cursor placement within text when you want to add/edit.

I don't care for them myself. They get in my way when I type.

I don't think its a tough challenge at all as long as u make it a separate app not a flashable zip that modifies the default touch input keyboard which aosp roms don't have.
I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844512. It works great. It just doesn't have arrows
Arrows are the must for me. Use them to go back and forth to edit the misspelled words in the messages I type.
