Basically... I just want some basic information on a glance.. in PART OF THE SCREEN.
ie unread email/sms headers, weather info, stock info, etc in just a small portion of the screen.. say the bottom 1.5" of the screen rather than powering up the entire screen.. since these are hardly 4-5 lines.. should conserve battery life..
also it can be made something like a ticker as in continuum.
something like this
Code:
__________________________ _____________

All BLACK
(saves battery)

|---------------------------------------| |
Gmail(10) 23F
Andy rubin> 'Droid Rocks'
|Enya-Sadness 1:42/3:53 <-||-> | |
GOOG 575.25 (+25) AAPL 320 (+1.5)
Wikileaks wreack havoc: AP
_______________________________________
Is this even doable? ie either power off part ofthe screen and display on part of it.. or just put a black lockscreen background with some data displayed in part of it.
Just an idea..you can make millions of this.. :>

I would definitely pay for this app to replace my lock screen. It works for our SAMOLED screen because black screen doesn't draw any power.
Samsung continuum has this feature built-in. Does it with a second 'ticker' screen.

yea but its a separate lcd/amoled screen iguess not a continuous screen...
since our samoleds are 0 power consumption they will greatly benefit from this feature..
I m sure 90% of the times, thats all we need th screen for...chking emails, sms, news, weather.
there shud be a way to use part of the screen for basic functionality ie phone(how big a dialer u need.. type in few characters of the name, select the name hit dial), scroll thru emails, sms, n may be reply from there too..
on top of all this.. the side power button is a major annoyance for me.. not sure how many ppl feel the same way.. everytime i try to press is..the slider keeps sliding and i cant get to press the button. .. is there a way to just hit the screen or some other button to power on the screen..

Wrong. It has one Super AMOLED and one OLED.

Okay, we got some more info on that screen. The entire front of the phone is one huge four-inch screen, with the Android buttons more or less painted over the lower third -- the screen lights up underneath them in white to illuminate them. Samsung says it's just easier for marketing purposes to say it's two screens, but that they're selectively turning on the bottom portion of the display for the ticker.

I have two/three faint white /yellow lines running vertically down the screen, (look where the line separates GPS & sound and follow it all the way down) just reliased it last night watching a movie...Took it to CPW today compared to the one they had on display. They confirmed it but found that SGS2's were ALL sold out in central London and only place they had left was St.James Park and told me to wait until next week giving me a phone number for stock supplies and told me to ring and reserve one at my CPW when it was available. Looks like its very popular =)
Have a look yourselves, also I really don't know what to do, send it back whenever they get it in stock or wait for the SGS 2 with NFC in and then get it replaced...Will the original U.K SGS 2 get phased out in time? & will NFC phones be same price and that an exchange be possible?
Meantime see if you guys spot anything weird on your screens. Can see it best if you have the notification bar all the way down. Sorry for the bad quality photo.
What shall I do? NFC then swap it for a new one? Or do it next week? :S
I've been starting at this for a while and I can't see anything. ¬_¬
Think you need a bigger picture tbh
Screen is still purrrrrrrrrfect here.
lol carnt see note, and whats with the nfc???? it will be a while till that ever gets used in the uk (an almost pointless feature if you ask me).

OP, after staring at your second batch of pics for quite a while I can see what you mean but it is soooooo unnoticeable I really had to make an effort to discover it. I doubt if I had it on mine I would notice it. Perhaps its more noticeable in person? If not then maybe the reason everyone says its perfect.
If its quite noticeable I would get a replacement till it is not there.
Definitely noticeable in the second set of pics. Easily.

Hey!
I thought of a concept that will be hard to achieve, but awesome if it works.
This is it: The OS acts as if there are two screens that you can control independently. This way you can do things like editing a file while looking thing up on the internet. I realize this probably would not work, and in terms of technology I'm kind of a noob, but this is just an idea that would be cool and not actually anything I am working on.

I know of the Sony Tablet P, but I meant that it would be something that any Android phone with enough power could use. But thanks anyway!
If you split the screen in two, don't you think the screens would be way too small anyway? I mean it is a good idea, but who really does anything majorly needing that on their phone?
Maybe if you got the Kyocera Echo's source you could trick the display into doing it
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/13/kyocera-echo-review/
But it wouldn't be practical on a phone, maybe on a tablet
OP, I think its a great idea!
You would have two 6.25 cm (2.5") 427x480 (or 480 minus a few pixel rows for the status bar) app windows.
It probably could be implemented, but I doubt it will

This is just for multitasking though. The DS was a good idea, but the real innovation was the touch screen - not the two screens.
This might or might not be useful. I thought of it because to me it seems useful when looking things up or something. And yes, the screens might be small. But I do not think they will be too small.
There's.a Nokia dual screen check it on youtube I def was not impressed
Sent from my R800a using XDA App
I would find this useful because you can have your music player on the left/bottom of the screen, and have any other app on the other half of the screen. That way you wont have to change constantly between apps so in other words it is great for multitasking.
Imigine that you can swipe the bar between the two apps to make one bigger or smaller... that would be nice...

Actually the code is still in ICS I think. If you check the forums Themes and Apps, second page for a post by shadow android, there is a post concerning using the search button for ICS task switcher. The code still in the android policy jar uses the old switcher unless you change it in PhoneWindowManager.
EDIT: Point being, if you change the keylayout files without changing the code in that file, you still get the GB app switcher.

I like it. It is bigger. Should look better on my 24" Monitor when I get it, also should look much better at 1080p as well.
it is a bit large but I think I like it better than the 2010 theme. I wish they had a floating bar a the top though, one that would stay while you scroll with the account options and maybe page selection.
I fixed my problem by going to control panel, edit options, and changing the skin to the last one on the list. Now I get the nice theme and I will not have to read XDA on my bigger monitor.

Who do i have to bl*w in HTC in order to get on screen buttons? Why do HTC refuses to implement onscreen buttons on their phones? they're so practical, they (and we) can remap them to their/our liking , and now they made the horrible decision to cut the multitasking button for good? because supposedly people dont use it? really HTC? you're stripping android of one of its best features? easy and almost instant switching between apps ? whatever people say, having to wait 2 more seconds to hold the back button to get multitask really makes an annoying difference
Multitasking is just a double tap away man!

TBH I prefer physical capacitive buttons over pure software buttons. There are pro and contra for both of them - in the end it's a matter of taste - you get used to both of them.
What I really don't like are physical buttons like the home button on the Galaxy Line. They need to be implemented perfectly, like on the iPhone or they are a major nuisance.

+1. I get to use gestures from bottom edge of the screen using apps if I have no software keys.

Why not go with on-screen buttons? So you can have a 1920x1080 screen instead of losing 200 pixels or so on one side.

Hi for example Xperia Z got on screen button and 5" screen but 3-4 mm, onscreen button taking space unnecessary so practically 4.7" in HTC one screen screen got same usable screen area as 5" of Xperia Z, I got S3 atm and when I install custom rom which enable on screen button and than I realise that on screen button is waste of precious screen size, for better information see using compare tools side-by side and you will see almost there is not much advantage of 5" screen because of onscreen button wasting space and look like .3" screen look like black strip at bottom, I would also like to see if anyone can compare actual usable screen area of Z vs ONE and post here please
U
I don't like the on screen software buttons, in many apps they remain visible ie: games... bit irritating.

Yepp That's very annoying. Especially during games. :silly:
On screen buttons would be an immediate deal breaker for me. The Nexus 4 will be the last phone I ever buy with on screen buttons. I hate it, with a passion.
Thank you HTC for NOT using on-screen buttons.
To solve this losing work space complain, they could make made a phone with 5" screen like the butterfly and still get 4.8" real state .
OK some of you don't like on screen buttons but are you actually saying you prefer to not have a multitasking button ?

There is a multitask button my friend, you just double tap the home button and you get a slicker cleaner multitasking UI.

No issue with multitasking. My real issue is how would we deal with games or apps that utilizes full screen window and requires the menu button. I don't think that 3dot menu would be available on games
And the survey says.... It's clear that a small teeny tiny group of people actually feel like those on screen buttons that clearly take up real estate are some how cool or useful lol, low the person who started this forum Ctfu... Good day everyone

AW: HTC keeps effing up with the button layout, why not go with on screen buttons?
I couldn't care less about the missing button. All of the functionality is there. 1 day and you used to it. And from what i have seen, the double tap is extremely responsive.

One reason I like capacitive buttons a lot is the posibility to use S2W.
When I have the phone on the table I use this all of the time with HOX+
No posibility to do this with on screen buttons.

You get an on-screen bar containing a 3 dots menu
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
For the last time: you can DISABLE THIS BAR by enabling long-press back for menu on the One.
I would much rather have a three button layout (the third one being a dedicated menu button), but this two button layout isn't preventing me from buying it in anyway.

I don't think it will take more than a day to get used to it!
